• Creating a ComboBox with one or more separator items?

  I'm using Delphi7 and I'd like to have a ComboBox with separator items (Just like in popup menus). I've seen this beautifully implemented in Mozilla Sunbird (I know, it's not Delphi...) the following way: The separator item is a simple gray line drawn in the center of the item If you hover over the separator with the mouse, the selection doesn't appear If the user clicks the separator, it's not selected either AND the combobox doesn't closeup. No. 1 could be implemented using DrawItem. I could live without No. 2 because I have no idea about that. For No. 3 I'm asking for your help. I've figured out that straight after closing up a CBN_CLOSEUP message is sent to the combobox. I thought about hooking the window proc and if CBN_CLOSEUP is sent to a certain combobox then countering it. But I'm unsure if this is the best solution, or maybe there are other, more elegant ways? Whatever the solution is, I'd like to have a standard ComboBox which supports WinXP/Vista/7 theming properly. Thanks! • On XP, how do I get the tooltip to appear above a transclucent form?

  I have an form with an Opacity less then 1.0. I have a tooltip associated with a label on the form. When I hover the mouse over the label, the tooltip shows up under the form instead of over the form. If I leave the Opacity at its default value of 1.0, the tooltip correctly appears over the form. However, my form is obviously no longer translucent. ;-) I have tried manually adjusting the position of the ToolTip with SetWindowPos() and creating a ToolTip "by hand" using CreateWindowEx(), but the problem remains. This makes me suspect its a Win32 API problem, not a problem with the Windows Forms implementation that runs on top of Win32. Why does the tooltip appear under the form, and, more importantly, how can I get it to appear over the form where it should? Edit: this appears to be an XP-only problem. Vista and Windows 7 work correctly. I'd still like to find a workaround to get the tooltip to appear above the form on XP. • How to keep windows from paging block of memory

  We are working on a Vista/Windows 7 applicaiton that will be running in 64 bit mode using VS2008/C++. We will be needing to cache hundreds of 2-3 mb blobs of data in RAM for performance reasons up to some memory limit. Our usage profile is such that we cannot read the data in fast enough if it is all on the the disk. Cached Memory usage will be larger than 1gb memory used. For this to work well, we need to ensure that Windows does not page this memory out as it will defeat the purpose of why we are doing this. I've done a fair amount of research and cannot find documenation that states exactly how to do this. I've seen several references that infer memory mapped files work this way. Is there an expert who can clarify this for me? I'm aware there are other programs that we could adapt to do this, for example, splitting the blobs and loading into memcache or inmemory databases, but they all have too many problems with performance or code complexity. Suggestions?

• How do I distribute my slightly customized Linux in VirtualBox?

  Suppose I've got some Arch Linux installation which I'd like to distribute among students with (sometimes very) basic Linux knowledge to make them able to compile C programs in an environment very similar to that in the university. (Things like Cygwin or MinGW seem to be inappropriate here.) I also choose VirtualBox as a holder for the virtual system. The question is: how do I distribute it? I mean: installing VirtualBox on the target machine (if not still installed) uncompressing and copying my image file (.VDI) registering the image (so that VirtualBox could see it when launched) configuring the guest system in VirtualBox (network, memory, etc.) optionally installing PuTTY to simplify interfacing with the guest Linux Should I create an installer? Which one? Or just write some .BAT-scripts? (Target host system is Windows, mostly XP and Vista.) I definately don't want to have a webpage with screen shot explaining where to click and what to press, because it's boring. Additionaly, what will be the best (the most user-friendly) way to configure network when the guest Linux system is run for the first time?

• Where should global Application Settings be stored on Windows 7?

  Hi everybody, I'm working hard on making my product work seamlessly on Windows 7. The problem is that there is a small set of global (not user-specific) application settings that all users should be able to change. On previous versions I used HKLM\Software\__Company__\__Product__ for that purpose. This allowed Power Users and Administrators to modify the Registry Key and everything worked correctly. Now that Windows Vista and Windows 7 have this UAC feature, by default, even an Administrator cannot access the Key for writing without elevation. A stupid solution would, of course, mean adding requireAdministrator option into the application manifest. But this is really unprofessional since the product itself is extremely far from administration-related tasks. So I need to stay with asInvoker. Another solution could mean programmatic elevation during moments when write access to the Registry Key is required. Let alone the fact that I don't know how to implement that, it's pretty awkward also. It interferes with normal user experience so much that I would hardly consider it an option. What I know should be relatively easy to accomplish is adding write access to the specified Registry Key during installation. I created a separate question for that. This also very similar to accessing a shared file for storing the settings. My feeling is that there must be a way to accomplish what I need, in a way that is secure, straightforward and compatible with all OS'es. Any ideas?

• Msysgit bash is horrendously slow in Windows 7

  I love git and use it on OS X pretty much constantly at home. At work, we use svn on Windows, but want to migrate to git as soon as the tools have fully matured (not just TortoiseGit, but also something akin the really nice Visual Studio integration provided by VisualSVN). But I digress... I recently installed msysgit on my Windows 7 machine, and when using the included version of bash, it is horrendously slow. And not just the git operations; clear takes about five seconds. AAAAH! Has anyone experienced a similar issue? Edit: It appears that msysgit is not playing nicely with UAC and might just be a tiny design oversight resulting from developing on XP or running Vista or 7 with UAC disabled; starting Git Bash using Run as administrator results in the lightning speed I see with OS X (or on 7 after starting Git Bash w/o a network connection - see @Gauthier answer). • php script randomly hangs up

  I install php 5 (more precisely 5.3.1) as apache module. After this one of my application becomes randomly hang up on mysql_connect - sometimes works, sometimes no, sometimes reload of page helps. How can this be fixed? I use Windows Vista, Apache/2.2.14 (Win32) PHP/5.3.1 with php module, MySql 5.0.67-community-nt. After a minute I obtain the error message: Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 60 seconds exceeded in path\to\mysqlcon.php on line 9 I run MySql locally and heavy load could not be a reason: SHOW PROCESSLIST shows about 3 process SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'MAX_CONNECTIONS' is 100. UPDATE: At first I thought that this is connected with mysql_connect. But now I can't say for certain. More difficult thing is when I insert the line to debug: $fh = fopen("E://_debugLog", 'a'); fwrite($fh, __FILE__ . " : " . __LINE__ . "\n"); fclose($fh); script start working near that location as a rule.

• Cross-platform HTML application options

  I'd like to develop a stand-alone desktop application targeting Windows (XP through 7) and Mac (Tiger through Snow Leopard), and if possible iPhone and Android. In order to make it all work with as much common code as possible (and because it's the only thing I'm good at), I'd like to handle the main logic with HTML and JS. Using Adobe AIR is a possibility. And I think I can do this with various application wrappers, using .NET for Windows XP, Objective C for iPhone, Java for Android and native "widget" platform support for Mac and Windows Vista & 7 (though I'd like to keep the widget in the foreground, so the Mac dashboard isn't ideal). Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start? The two sticking points are: I'll certainly need some form of persistent storage (cookies perhaps) to keep state between sessions I'll also probably need access to remote data files, so if I use AJAX and the hosting HTML file resides on the device, it will need to be able to do cross-domain requests. I've done this on the iPhone without any problems, but I'd be surprised if this were possible on other platforms. For me, Android and iPhone will be the easiest to handle, and it looks like I can use Adobe AIR to handle the rest. But I wanted to know if there are any other alternatives. Does anyone have any suggesions?

• How-to diagnose and fix such "on-site" crash of dotnet application?

  Hello! I'm working on some application which has auto-update function. The implemented idea is simple as following: - There are some "starter" application which is installed to "Program Files/whatever/...". It's the application which is intended to be started by user. - Each time the "starter" application is executed it checks server for updates and downloads it to "%APPDATA%/some/...". And then it starts some application from that folder. Above approach is working on my development machine (running Vista) and on some other machines under XP, but under some different machine (running Windows 7) it isn't working. When "starter" executes the real application it crashes with some unknown problem (Signature = System.UnauthorizedAccess). When real application is executed manually from %APPDATA%/some/ folder then everything is working fine. I've tried to set same working directory in ProcessStartInfo, so "starter" will also execute real application in that folder, but this isn't helped me. How can I diagnose and/or fix that issue?

• PNG Textures not loading on HTC desire

  Hi I'm developing a game for android using OpenGL es and have hit a problem: My game loads fine in the emulator (windows xp and vista from eclipse), it also loads fine on a T-Mobile G2 (HTC Hero) however when I load it on my new HTC Desire none of the textures appear to load correctly (or at all). I'm suspecting the BitmapFactory.decode method although I have no evidence that that is the problem. All of my textures are power of 2 and JPG textures seem to load (although they don't look great quality) but anything that is GIF or PNG just doesn't load at all except for a 2x2 red square which loads fine and one texture that maps to a 3d object but seems to fill each triangle of the mesh with the nearest colour). • C++ Printing: Printer jams, what am I doing wrong?

  I have a problem with printing in C++. As far as I know, this code used to work on my previous printer, but ever since I got another one (an HP C7280) it started giving problems. Whenever I try to print anything, even an empty page, the page JAMS the printer. I have to manualy remove the page from the printer. I have no clue why this is happening. Am I doing something wrong, is it a driver problem, are there better ways to print in C++? I am using Windows 7 64 bit, but this problem also presented itself when I was using Windows Vista 64 bit. • Newbie - eclipse workflow (PHP development)

  Hi all - this is a bit of a newbie question but hoping I can get some guidance. I've been playing around with Eclipse for a couple months yet I'm still not completely comfortable with my setup and it seems like every time I install it to a new system I end up with different results. What I'm hoping to achieve is (I think) fairly standard. In my environment I'd like SVN (currently using Subclipse), FTP support (currently using Aptana plugin), debugging (going to use XDebug) and all the usual bells and whistles of development (code completion, refactoring, etc.) My biggest current issue is how to set up my environment to support both a 'development' and 'production' server. Optimally I would be able to work directly against the dev server (Eclipse on my Vista desktop against the VM Ubuntu dev server) and then push to production server (shared hosting). I'd prefer to work directly against the dev server (with no local project files, just using the Connections provided by Aptana) but I'm guessing this won't allow for code-completoin or all the other bells and whistles provided for development. Any thoughts? Kind of an open ended question, but maybe this could be an opportunity for some of you with a great deal of experience using Eclipse to describe your setups so people like me can get some insight into good ways to get set up.

  I have an application in C# which I write some data to file. I am facing the problem on windows 7 professional that when I write data to C:\ProgramData, Access denied acception is thrown. If I login from an administrator account this issue vanishes, and if I login from some other account who have administrative previlages this issue comes up. • PNG's In Mac on Java cause massive CPU usage

  Hey, I've been having this problem for a while now and I was hoping someone could help. I make small games using Java on Mac OSX 1.6.3 and if I use PNG's as the image format my CPU usage by Java skyrockets to say 50% (on a very small 2D game). However if I use GIF as the format my CPU usage by Java stays constant at 10% which is reasonable. What is causing this problem?? It occurs on every game I develop using PNG's so I always just switch to GIF's. The problem is now that i need to use a PNG for its variable alpha properties rather than just plain transparency. This is not available using GIF's. The problem is present on Java SE 6 and previous versions. I am using an early 2009 Mac Book Pro 15". The problem does not occur on a Windows PC running the same game. The CPU usage due to Java using PNG's on a Windows PC (I have tried XP, Vista and 7) is always constantly low at ~10%. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

  Hi. i've stuck in a problem that is never heard about before. i'm making an online game which uses UDP packets in a certain character action. after i developed the udp module, it seems to work fine. though most of our team members have no problem, but a man, who is my boss, told me something is wrong for that module. i have investigated the problem, and finally i found the fact that... on his PC, if udp packet size is less than 12, the packet is never have been delivered to the other host. the following is some additional information: 1~11 bytes udp packets are dropped, 12 bytes and over 12 bytes packets are OK. O/S: Microsoft Windows Vista Business NIC: Attansic L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Controller WSASendTo returns TRUE. loopback udp packet works fine. how do you think of this problem? and what do you think... what causes this problem? what should i do for the next step for the cause? PS. i don't want to padding which makes length of all the packets up to 12 bytes.

• HTML5 Drag and Drop styles not displaying on Windows Server 2003

  I'm working on a file upload utility based on Valum's Ajax-Uploader. The idea is similar to the Gmail attachment process. The user should be able to drag a file from the desktop into the browser window and onto the file upload area to get it to upload. This works fine in the browsers that support this functionality (Firefox 3.6+, Chrome 7+). The problem I'm running into are the styles that should be re-drawn when the user: Drags the file anywhere in the browser Drags the file into the upload area I have tested in the exact same browser versions on WinXP, Vista, and Win7. The appropriate styles are redrawn. However, in Windows Server 2003, they do not. In Win2003, when I inspect the div that should be redrawn via Firebug, the "drop-area" and "drop-area-active" classes are applied correctly. Firebug even shows the correct style declarations, but the changes are never visible. The only difference between FF and Chrome that I'm able to spot is that in Chrome, the "drop-area-active" style is displayed for a split second when the user drops the file. I'm not positive that it is a Windows2003 issue, but that's the only OS in which I'm able to recreate the bug.

• What is the best (Windows) program launcher?

  One of the biggest general productivity boosters I've used is a good program launcher. I was a long-time user of SlickRun, and I've tried a few others. My current favorite is Executor - by far the best I've used. Other options: Executor: My current favorite Vista Start Menu: Pretty good, actually, but Executor is similar (binds to Win+Z) and much more flexible. Quicksilver: For Macs only, but it seems to be the gold standard against which most other launchers are measured. Google Desktop: Press Ctrl+Ctrl and it's a quick launcher! AutoHotKey: Much,much more than just a launcher - more than I need, really. SlickRun: simple and unobtrusive Launchy: Seems to be the launcher of choice for many StackOverflow users :) Colibri: "Type Ahead - Information at the tip of your wings". Quite a cool concept. Many, many others. Scott Hanselman outlines some more here. I realize that everyone will have their own preferences, but the question is: is there anything that really stands out in terms of speed, features, and especially productivity increase?

• Trouble using files Globally

  Recently I ran into trouble when I discovered that vista restricts what can be installed into the system32 directory even though I am the administrator for this computer. It will not allow me to register dll files so I can use programs like wget globally like how programs "nslookup" etc are used. Keeps giving me this error. Regsvr32: The module "C:\Windows\System32\libeay32.dll" failed to load. make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files. The specified module could not be found. Moving the required DLL files to system32 prompts me to confirm administrator privileges are needed to move these files, So I give the permission, copy the files to system32, and run wget to confirm. This is where it tells me it cannot find the DLL's required to run and when using regsvr32 it says it cannot find the entry point so it will not load the DLL asking me if it is a valid DLL or OCX file. If I leave the DLL's that came with wget in the same folder as wget outsite of system32 they work vice adding them to system32 with the exe it will not work saying it cannot read the those dll files. Is there a way around this or Do I need to Upgrade to Windows 7 to get away from these problems/restrictions?

• Background-image is not displaying in Firefox

  Strange thing happens. Background-image is not displaying in Firefox under some versions of WindowsXP and Windows Vista, but displays in Firefox under Mac OSX. It also displays in IE. • IE showing hidden div under certain circumstances

  After googling around and finding a lot of ie bugs I still did not find a description of the problem I have. The initial situation is a standard one. We have a tooltip which is actually a hidden div that will be displayed on mouseover at a given location. The div is hidden with display:none and contains a table with the content. We tried different libraries for showing the div (scriptaculous and jQuery Cluetip) but the effect is the same. The problem: Everything is fine as long as the contents fits the width of my window. But when I resize it until the horizontal scrollbar is activated the content of the hidden div will be shown at the end of the page when the tooltip is activated. This is really strange as it happens only under these premises. When more than one tooltip is involved the browser might even crash (and under Vista takes the whole system with him duh). I know it's a bit complicated to explain but I hope that someone at least had heard of that bug and can point me into the right direction.

• Mysql configuration problem

  I have being trying since last night. At first it was working but this morning again its not working. I am installing mysql version 5.0 on vista machine. when i try to configure its says that: The security settings could not be applied to the database because the connnection had failed with the following error: Error Nr. 1045 access denied for user 'root'@'localhost'(using password:yes) if a personal firewall is runnig on your machine plaes make sure you have opened the tcp port 3306 for connections. otherwise no client applicaion can connect to the server. after you have opened the port please press retry to apply the secirity settings. if you are re-installing after you just installed the mysql server please not that the data directory was not removed automatically. therefore the old password from your last installation is still needed to connect to the server. in this case please select skip now and re-run the configuration wizard from the start menu. i tried disabling the wirefall, user accounts but getting the same error. can anyone suggest me something please.
