• Files are piling up in /usr/src/. How can I stop this?

  I have been having many serious system issues over the past few weeks and have been scratching my head as to why. • Logkeys fragile?

  The program logkeys (which seems to be the only keylogger for linux out there which I can run) has some problems, it stops logging after some time, never returns again, I don't know how to trigger that bug, if the file is edited while logging, it just stops, if the file exists before logging it doesn't try to append to it or delete it or anything, the first issue is the most important but the rest are quite annoying can anyone help me because I'm not a linux programmer (I don't really know anything about the linux API but I am a beginner C++ programmer) and I won't be able to make my own keylogger thanks for the interest BTW I'm sure I got the right input device because it starts logging then stops and I use the command "logkeys -s -u -d /dev/input/event3 -o '/home/ahmed/Documents/log.txt'"

• Why does my MySQL remote-connection fail (VLAN)?

  ubuntu-community! Again I have a problem with my special friend MySQL :D I have got two servers - a database-server and a web-server - who are connected via VLAN. Now I want the web-server to have remote access to the database-server's MySQL. So I created the user user in mysql.user. user's Host is xxx.yyy.zzz.9 which is the internal IP-address of the web-server. xxx.yyy.zzz.0 is the network. I also created user with Host % . As long as I use MySQL on the database-server logging in as user, everything works fine. But trying to log in as user from xxx.yyy.zzz.9 using mysql -h xxx.yyy.zzz.8 -u user -p (where xxx.yyy.zzz.8 is the database-server's internal IP), I get ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'xxx.yyy.zzz.8' (110) So I tried to activate Bind-Address in the my.cnf file. Well, if I use xxx.yyy.zzz.8, nothing changes. But if I try xxx.yyy.zzz.9 and try to restart MySQL, I get mysql stop/waiting start: Job failed to start I checked the log files and found - nothing. The database-server's MySQL doesn't even register, that the web-server tries to connect remotely. My idea is, that maybe I didn't configure the VLAN properley, even though I asked someone who actually knows such stuff and he told me, I did everything right. • Installing pgAdmin III for postgreSQL 9.2

  I have a windows server that runs postgresql 9.2. I want to hit it using pgAdmin III from my Ubuntu Linux 12.10 workstation box. I installed pgAdmin III from synaptic and also tried direct download from postgreSQL site using software installer. Regardlesss, I can get only get pgAdmin III for postgresql 9.1. When I run pgAdmin III and point to my server I get an error message telling me that the database is 9.2 and my pgAdmin III is for 9.1, isn't compatible with 9.2. I can access the server itself fine OK from the Ubuntu box - I have Python programs that hit the database with no problems - but I need pgAdmin III for 9.2 running under Ununtu Linux 12.10. Is it available? Where do I get it?

• Problem importing Firefox bookmarks to Chromium

  I would like to switch from Firefox to Chromium (it seems to be faster for my system) and I have a large number of bookmarks I would like to import into Chromium. I looked at this question: Can I sync bookmarks between Firefox and Chromium? but that seemed to be specific to Firefox Sync, which I don't have. I just want to import my bookmarks from Firefox into Chromium. However, when I go to the Customize and Control button and then choose the option Import Bookmarks and Settings under the Bookmarks menu item, it gives me this: I have Firefox and Chromium as up to date as the official repositories (I believe), so I really have no clue what is going on. I have attempted to import directly from HTML, but it only imports the first set of bookmarks, nothing beyond that (where all of the bookmarks I really want are.) Can I import the JSON Firefox backup file into Chromium, or am I stuck manually entering all of these bookmarks into Chromium? Thanks!

• Internet suddenly stopped working

  I was using NoMachine to access Ubuntu 11.10 when suddenly the internet on Ubuntu stopped working. Now Ubuntu doesn't recognize the internet at all (including locally). Symptoms: Doesn't recognize the fact that there is an ethernet cable attached. (I've tried switching cables, didn't work.) GUI says "No network devices available" Can't ping external IP addresses. Tried changing /etc/network/interfaces to eth1 instead of eth0 but it didn't work. ifconfig provides no output relating to eth0. When I type "/etc/init.d/networking restart" it tells me "Cannot find device 'eth0'/Failed to bring up eth0." The network settings had used a static IP address prior to the crash. I don't know why it won't recognize the ethernet (I think this is the fundamental problem, but I might be wrong) and why it stopped working so suddenly--I haven't installed any updates lately. Any ideas? Any more information I should provide? EDIT: lspci recognizes the Ethernet controller; netstat does not. lspci calls it "Intel Corporation Device 0000"

How it should be written if I want to boot other live images like fedora, cent, opensuse etc. ? • Mathematica 8 crashes Ubuntu 13.10

  I have Mathematica 8 installed on my Ubuntu laptop since 2011. I updated Ubuntu several times, and experienced no problems with Mathematica. It also worked smoothly after I updated Ubuntu to 13.10 (it worked for sure for a week after update). When I tried to start Mathematica today by executing a .sh-file, the screen went black, I was logged out from the session and thrown back to the login screen. Typing mathematica in the terminal produced the same effect. Typing mathematica -cleanstart or mathematica -mesa did not help. Starting Gnome session with or without effects did not help Launching mathematica under another user account did not help. I still can run text-only version of mathematica by typing math in the terminal. I don't remember making any changes to my configuration except for installing updates. Is there any quick way to fix this behavior? How can I know which component exactly crashed? Where should I look for crash logs?

• Can't log in to GNOME after upgrade (raring -> saucy)

  I've just upgraded my ubuntu (raring to saucy) and I now can't log in to GNOME. As opposed to virtual consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1, for example). I set it up to log in automatically. But it asks for password now. I type in the password, press Enter, the screen blinks and here I am again at the login screen.   In the /etc/mediatomb/config.xml, can mediatomb VLC profile transcode audo as MP3 rather than mpga ? My Sony GoogleTV wont render streamed .avi files files with a mpga audio in them. The original files are Divx encoded with 128kbs MP3 audio but mediatomb is transcoding them. How can I change this? Any ideas? Can I turn off the audio and video transcoding somehow? Can you create more than one profile for VLC in the config.xml for mediatomb?

• Firefox 4.0 Error [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Firefox crashes very often - Attempting to load the system libmoon Hi, I am running ubuntu 10.10 and installed firefox 4.0 beta 10 using the ppa:mozillateam/firefox-next, by running the command sudo apt-get install firefox-4.0. However whenever I try running it, it starts up and then within 2 seconds it crashes without any warning. I also don't get the usual warning whether to send the crash report to firefox or not. So I tried running firefox-4.0 using the terminal and I get the following the error message. Attempting to load the system libmoon Segmentation fault What do it mean? And what do I do to fix this error? I really want to try the latest firefox beta in ubuntu.

• AMD/AMD GPU Switching

  I have two GPU's in my laptop, both of which are AMD. Whenever I use the Catalyst Control Centre to change the GPU, nothing changes after reboot. In fact, when I do the fglrxinfo command the terminal only reports seeing one GPU, the integrated one (HD 4250). The dedicated one (Mobility HD5470) goes unnoticed and I can't seem to use that GPU at all. I really don't want to use the Open Source drivers because I've found there generally slower than the proprietary, but the proprietary doesn't seem to work either. Any help is appreciated.

For example #!/bin/bash echo "start spotify" gnome-terminal -e spotify --title spotify When I run this command, one gnome-terminal shows up and spotify show up. I also want the gnome-terminal to popup "hidden" in a different virtual desktop. • Use a Free Utility to Create Multiple Virtual Desktops in Windows

  If you’ve used Linux, you’re probably familiar with the virtual desktop feature. It provides a convenient way to organize programs and folders open on your desktop. You can switch among multiple desktops and have different programs and folders open on each one. However, virtual desktops is a feature missing in Windows. There are many third-party options for adding virtual desktops to Windows, including one called Dexpot, which we have covered previously. Dexpot is free, but only for private use. Companies, public institutions, non-profit organizations, and even freelancers and self-employed people must buy the program. We found another virtual desktop tool that is completely free for everyone to use, called mDesktop. It’s a lightweight, open source program that allows you to switch among multiple desktops using hot keys and specify open programs or folders to be active on all desktops. You can use mDesktop to group related programs or to work on different projects on separate desktops. mDesktop is portable and does not need to be installed. Simply extract the .zip file you downloaded (see the link at the end of this article) and double-click the mDesktop.exe file.
