• Windows 7 Blank Screen on Boot / Login

  I have a new system that's having a few problems... sometimes (seems to be when the PC is cold, i.e. has been switched off for a while, though that could be my imagination) I get a blank blue screen when I boot up. The system boots normally and auto-logs-in. The desktop loads and I'm even able to launch applications, but then everything disappears and the screen goes to the default windows desktop blue colour (not the desktop image, just a plain blue with no mouse cursor). At this point the machine completely locks up - I'm unable to even toggle Num Lock and have to hold in the power button for 5 seconds to kill it. Interestingly if I manage to launch some applications before it goes blank, they will usually crash... sometimes explorer.exe will crash too. When I reboot, the system is fine and stable. I've installed the latest graphics drivers and run memtest86+ for 6 passes (and counting) with no errors. The system specs are: CPU: Intel I7 2.66 @ 3.4GHz RAM: 6GB (3 * 2GB DDR3) HDD: 128GB Crucial M225 SSD Motherboard: Gigabyte EX58-UD3R Gfx: ATI Radeon Sapphire 5870 1GB Note: There are a few similar questions but I haven't found one that matches my symptoms

• Xen 4.1.2 unable to boot

  I have installed Xen 3.1.2 perfectly, and it's running fine. However since that version is way outdated I just updated it to 4.1.2 by adding the gitco repository and then yum update. It installed fine, modified my grub.conf to reflect the changes but then on a reboot, it simply doesn't come back online (I can't see what's going on, as it's a rented dedicated server). What are my options? Booting into rescue mode and using the older kernel works fine, it will come back up. But once I use the xen.gz-4.1.2kernel, it won't come back up anymore and I need to use the rescue image.. My /boot/grub/grub.confis as follows: title CentOS (2.6.18-308.1.1.el5xen) root (hd0,1) #kernel /xen.gz-2.6.18-308.1.1.el5 dom0_mem=1024M kernel /xen.gz-4.1.2 module /vmlinuz-2.6.18-308.1.1.el5xen ro root=/dev/md1 module /initrd-2.6.18-308.1.1.el5xen.img When I uncomment the 3.1.2 kernel, it works fine, but booting with the 4.1.2 kernel fails and I have no idea what's going on. Hence my question: what are my options?

• Slow boot for OS and external devices

  I have been having this problem intermittently but as of yesterday, it has become more consistent. It originally started when I rebooted my PC at home and the OS (Windows 8) sat in a loop appearing to do nothing while loading. I figured since this was a new installation, that something may have just become corrupted and I decided to reinstall. So I tried to boot off of the thumb drive which had the installation iso and encountered pretty much the same issue. Same with the DVD drive. So, I rebooted once again and left it to load the entire night just to see if it ever would and sure enough this morning, Windows had finally loaded. Authentication had the same roblem albeit not quite as long (took about 5 minutes to authenticate). However, once I was in, everything appeared to be working fine and as quick as normal with the exception of when I tried to scan the C drive for any errors, which ran unbearably slow (45 minutes and before I left for work and was not finished scanning a 64GB SSD drive). I mention that I have had this issue but never when loading the OS. Before it occurred when trying to install windows 7 from a different DVD drive than the one I have now. It took me about 3 hours to do it since I had to wait sometimes 30+ min for each step to finish processing. Does anyone have an idea as to what can cause this? I am assuming it is the motherboard since it is responsible for communication with all the devices I'm having issues with but I cannot find anyone else who has had a problem like this and don't want to drop more money on a MB if it isn't the problem.   Hi everyone, i have a machine running Win7 Ultimate. It was running fine, then it just froze - all the stuff i was doing was still on the screen, but mouse and keyboard input was ignored, any animation that was happening on the screen stopped, the machine literally just froze. So i rebooted (power off button), from then on the machine will reboot, but it ultimately freezes again. The instance when this happens will vary - i have made it as far as the Windows login screen, but mostly it will do the POST, then give me the option to press F1 to continue or Del to enter BIOS settings (but of course pressing a key has no effect - it's frozen!). I have disconnected everything not necessary for the boot process, the only peripheral that remains attached is the keyboard. (even the network cable is disconnected). Prior to this the machine was operating fine. The install of Win7 is only 2 days old, and it was a fresh reinstall (i.e. not an upgrade or repair). Can anyone give me an indication of what may be wrong here? I'm not sure if this question should be here or on SuperUser, please migrate it if i have chosen the wrong board.

  We have an Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition installation (10.2.0.1.0) on a Windows Server 2003 virtual machine. It was initially created with Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 but has now been migrated to Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. The services start on system boot, but the instance does not start up. • Ubuntu won't boot from USB memory stick

  I used the instructions on this webpage to create a bootable USB drive for running Ubuntu 9.10. Unfortunately it doesn't work on my EeePC. Even with 'Removable Dev.' selected in the BIOS as the first boot device, the PC just boots into Windows 7. How do I troubleshoot this problem? • Recovering drive via boot to Win7 setup command prompt

  I am trying to recover data from two old IDE drives. Drive1 has been successful, but something is wrong with Drive2. It does not appear as a drive letter. Due to limited legacy hardware, the only way i can see these drives is to boot using windows 7 setup and goto the command prompt. Without going further as to why, my question is how i can access the data in this command prompt. I discovered DISKPART command and while a first time user, it looked like something that can fix my problem. Here are the results of my diskpart commands. At the bottom is a image of the commands taken with a camera. The Drive2 is present because when using the diskpart command, I can see it. How can I copy the information using a robocopy script if the drive letter is not available? how can I assign a drive letter? Is there any repair command I need to execute? When i execute DISKPART, the following is what i see. DISKPART> LIST DISK Disk### Status Size Free Disk 5 Online 37 GB 2048 KB So then I select disk 5. DISKPART> SELECT DISK 5 "Disk 5 is now the selected disk" When I list partition DISKPART> LIST PARTITION Partition ### Type Size Partition 1 Primary 101 MB Partition 2 Primary 37 GB So I select partition 2 "Partition 2 is now the selected partition." I then try to assign a drive letter DISKPART> ASSIGN LETTER=G "There is no volume specified." "Please select a volume and try again." When i list volume the drive is not present. • iMac 20inch (Mid 2007) SL DVD Boot Prohibitory Sign

  iMac 20inch (Mid 2007 Build) with Ubuntu 12.0.4 How I got in this situation I had a perfectly healthy Intel iMac running Snow Leopard several months ago. Then I got the dreaded spinning gear and several kernel panics. After getting a little frustrated (failing to find a solution online), I found an old macbook installation disk and used it to access Disk Utility. From here, I erased my entire hard drive leaving me with no OS. I then created a Ubuntu DVD and installed Ubuntu onto the system. Now, on Ubuntu, I wine installed Transmac and burned a Single layer copy (with languages, etc. removed to save space) of Snow Leopard onto a 4.7GB DVD. I tried to boot from it and was met with first the grey apple screen and a spinning cog before the grey apple shortly turned into the infamous prohibitory sign. Note: I met this problem previously when using Disk Utility to create a bootable USB of Snow Leopard, hence I severely doubt it has anything to do with the DVD created. Resources at my disposal 1 x iMac running Ubuntu 6 x 4.7GB DVDs 1 x USB Stick 12GB 1 x Windows 7 Laptop Resources I do not have Firewire cables Access to a prebuilt retail disk (Misplaced) Access to another Mac Apple Warranty I would be hugely grateful if someone was able to tell me how to install Snow Leopard again.

• Repairing hard disk when Windows installation disk won't boot

  I'm trying to recover some data from a faulty hard disk with Windows installed on it (on which Windows won't even boot). I have tried so far: Booting to Ubuntu live USB stick and running ntfsfix (didn't work) Trying to mount the broken partition when running Ubuntu from usb stick (doesn't mount) Running photorec image recovery tool from live Ubuntu (it found some stuff but not the images I was looking for) Now as a last resort I got myself a Windows installation on a USB stick so that I can try fdisk, but the installer doesn't work. The loading screen shows up and then the installer crashes. The installer works fine on other computers. I suspect that the installer is trying to read the hard drive to see if there's something there but when it can't read one partition, it crashes. On Ubuntu, I can mount other partitions except the one I'm interested in so at least the hard drive is not completely dead. So the question is, what options do I have left? To be more specific, my goal is to recover some images from the faulty ntfs-partition on the hard drive. Other than that, I don't care about the contents of the hard disk.

• Share Firefox/Thnderbird data between W7 and Linux Mint 12 in dual boot computer

  I've just set up my laptop (where I had running only W7) with a dual boot to run Linux Mint 12 as well. I have a "Data" partition (apart from the required partitions for W7 and Linux) where I store pretty much everything that isn't software installations (music, videos, project files, etc). I seem to be able to access that NTFS partition totally fine from Mint (like I've always done with W7), which is cool because I can access all that stuff regardless of which OS I'm using. I would like to know if it's possible (and how) to go one step further and share programs data between the two OS. One example would be my Firefox and Thunderbird data. For example, in Firefox share my bookmarks (and if I could share history, autocomplete and all that stuff, that would be awesome). In thunderbird, be able to share my mail and configuration, seeing the same inbox, folders, message rules, etc... So if I receive/send an email from W7 and later switch to Mint, I can see that email as it had been received/sent from Mint, and vice versa. Is this even possible? Or am I asking for too much convenience? If it's possible, any clues on how to set it all up?

• hp DL380 G4 won't boot with disk plugged into front USB

  We outgrew a few older external USB backup drives, and purchased WD My Passport 1 TB USB 3.0 drives to replace them. When they are plugged into the front of our G4, it will blink forever after the BIOS (which is current, BTW) and never boot, even though the USB disks are not "bootable" per se. Our old drives did not exhibit this behaviour (so I don't think it's this type of issue that I've read about other servers.) The old drives were USB 2.0, but this shouldn't make a difference, AFAICT--the specs say all of the G4's USB ports are the same, 2.0, anyway, so I'm not sure how one port would handle a USB 3.0 device better than another. If we plug the new drives in one of the back slots, it boots fine. What's the cause? My concern is that the front USB port, and possibly the motherboard, might be starting to die. (We are experiencing other strange issues with them, or were initially, like intermittent file permissions errors despite wide-open ACL on these local drives, but some serverfault users have me convinced they may be coincidental software/security related issues.)

  After recompiling a new kernel on CentOS 6.3, using the same kernel I have been using on several other machines, I am getting a kernel panic on two machines. • USB Harddisk not working on dual boot windows7/8

  Yesterday I installed Windows 8 on a machine that already had Windows 7. They are on dual boot and both systems work fine. The problem is that inserting a USB hard disk in either system does nothing. If I connect a USB mouse or mobile phone, they work fine, so the USB plugs are active/working and the USB hard drives that I am trying to connect work on my other laptop just fine. I have tried to uninstall all USB-related items in Device Manager and let them reinstall upon restart, but that didn't help. The USB drive does not show up in disk management either. The strange thing is that it is exactly the same situation on both windows. USB mice etc. work just fine and USB hard drives do not. Any ideas on solving this problem would be great. ...Don't know if it is important, but this is a Toshiba Tecra R950 Laptop. EDIT: I have found out that my other USB HD (Western Digital) works on this laptop, but for my StoreJet Transcend and Adata "something" does not work. All three work on another Windows 7 laptop. Sizewise the WD is in the middle at 400 GB. The StoreJet is 640 GB and the Adata is 200 GB.

• BSOD error 0x0000006B PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED on boot

  I reinstalled League of Legends because the patcher always gave me an error. However, out of complete stupidness I didn't uninstall the old installation first because I thought that it would simply replace the files. However, when the installer bar got to 100% it simply minimized. Then I closed the application from the task manager. I tried uninstalling it after a failed attempt to start it up. The same behavior as when I installed it. Then I tried reinstalling where it simply presented the InstallShield Modify/Repair/Remove menu and I selected repair. Nothing happened. Then I tried selecting Modify, then seeing that the only option (called DefaultFeature) was unchecked. Same behaviour as install/uninstall. After seeing that it still failed, I uninstalled again. And after that I deleted C:\Program Files (x86)\League of Legends manually. When I tried installing LoL again it still thought I had it, so I chose repair. This time something actually happened, but it installed the whole game to C:\Windows. Seeing what was going on I clicked cancel and then started it up to try uninstalling it. However, I got an error message about something not being registered and then the minimization to I decided to let it repair completely. Then I uninstalled it and it gave only the minimization. However, when I rebooted another application started up complaining about some library being absent. So I decided to do a system restore. After letting it complete I got a BSOD every time I tried starting up Windows normally or in safe mode. However, system recovery mode works, although the system recovery automatic repair does not fix it. After a bit of searching I found a Microsoft KB article about it (981833) and tried following the workaround instructions. Nothing happened. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64-bit installed with WUBI.

• Windows 7 BSOD on boot after windows update

  After Windows updates today, I restarted my desktop (for the first time in a couple weeks), and on boot up ran into a BSOD: STOP: 0x0000007E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF8000355AB5A, 0xFFFFF880031CB3A8, 0xFFFFF880031CAC10) I tried system restore, but there was only 1 restore point which was from all the way back in January. I tried it anyway but after 10 minutes of running it said system restore could not be completed. Additional info: I checked my BIOS and it is detecting my rams. CPU is Intel Sandy Bridge i5-2500k overclocked to 4.3GHz. I reclocked it back to stock speeds (3.3 GHz) in case it was causing the issue (I highly doubt that it is). But the problem persists. Running Windows 7. 12 GB of RAM at 1333 MHz OS on 64gb SSD. What is causing this? How should I fix it? Also, if it is caused by windows update, is there a way to undo the update with command prompt? I tried safemode, and the blue screen comes up as well, but I am able to access command prompt.

  I pulled my hard drive out of my computer and started with a bootable usb version of Ubuntu, which I am using that at this point. At first boot, I see that there is a Windows folder when browsing network. Since there is no operating system present, besides the usb that I boot from, should there be a Windows network folder? Original question First of all I just want to say, I wish I had tried Ubuntu a couple years ago when I first heard about it, but I was like a lot of the population and went with the "easy way" and stuck with Windows because I didn't want to take the time to learn something new. Well, about 3 months ago I realized someone had hacked into my computer, and then found they had hacked my facebook account so I decided I had better do a complete credit check. I found student loans (totalling about 30,000 so far) had recently showed up on my credit report. I think it's going to be a long, long road to recovery now but I'm hoping Ubuntu will be a start and definitely an eye opener. My relationship with Windows is over. I had 3 antivirus programs running, none were protecting me like I thought they were. Turned out a free program that I downloaded was the only one that could detect and clean the virus, but by then it was too late. Anyhow, my question is, I pulled my hard drive out of my computer and started with a bootable usb version of Ubuntu, which I am using that at this point. • Adding SSD as boot drive to existing system

  I recently bought two 128GB SSDs that I'm planning on adding (RAID 0) to a system I currently have on a 1TB HDD. I'm hoping to redo the disk space such that the SSDs act as the boot drive (only other items would be things I install there explicitly) while the majority of my system is on the HDD - documents, media, program files. Something like this: SSD = [ OS | Explicitly placed programs] HDD = [ Program Files | Media | Documents | etc] I have an external drive capable of holding all the data I want to save, so the backup isn't too much of a concern. What I'm worried about is how I should go about doing this - do I need to do a clean install on the SSDs, reformat the HDD, move things like Program Files/Users to the HDD, and then restore data (not full programs but things like saves)? Should I be using one of the regedit hacks I've seen around to change the default install directories instead of moving program files and users? Should I have the actual folders on the HDD and symlinks on the SSD? Or is there a better solution? Do I need to disconnect my HDD while doing the clean Windows install?

I have already got a windows forms app that works like I want it to, and I'm using the task scheduler to start it on login. We would really like it if the process as well as the task is hidden from the task manager in order to avoid accidental deletion. Selecting "Hidden" in the task scheduler hides the task (good!) but the process is still visible (not good enough). I tried using the option to run as "SYSTEM" or "LOCAL SERVICE" so that the user would get "access denied" when trying to delete or just wouldn't even view it by default. However, running as a service makes the process invisible on Vista and 7, and the point of my app is to display information interactively. (User can click, sort, etc). Is there any other alternatives to either run the process as someone/something besides the logged in user and still have the logged on user be able to see and interact with it? (Therefore it would list as someone else's app?) From what I've read on the internet, the only ways to actually hide something from the task manager seem hacky and/or difficult and rather involved. I don't really want to write a bunch of C or whatever only to maybe not have it work on Vista/7 anyway. Besides which, for a legitimate app with a legitimate use, I shouldn't have to go to those extremes... I see "Access Denied" all the time for system processes... why is it so hard for me to do the same? So does anyone have any simple solutions? Is it easier than I think to just list something in the task manager as another user? Thanks in advance for any replies.

  hey guys i'm about to begin a football manager inspired facebook application in php/mysql and had a couple of questions: 1) where would be the best place to host the database? any services offered within great britain would be excellent! 2) does anyone have any ideas on how i could use player statistics as part of the in-game match engine? how would php accomodate this? i would like to make the matches as realistic as possible? 3) lastly i wanted to know whether php/mysql would be the best language to code this game in. i am quite confident within this language and can pick up new skills relatively quickly. but i am worried once again (in reference to number 2) about how i would simulate matches using the data from php. i'd appreciate any pointers. thanks for the help guys!

I am getting lost in the authentication options: In IIS 6 Manager, I can go in to the properties of the web site and set authentication options. In the web site's web.config file, under system.web, there is an <authentication mode="Windows"/> tag In the web site's web.config file, under system.serviceModel, I can configure: <wsHttpBinding <binding name="MyBinding" <security mode="Transport" <transport clientCredentialType="Basic"/ </security </binding </wsHttpBinding What is the difference between these three? How should each be configured? Some context: I have a simple web site project that contains a single .svc web service, and I want it to use Basic authentication over SSL. (Also, I want it to not use Windows accounts, but maybe that is another question.)

• How to retrieve path for a file embedded in Resources (Resource Manager) - .net C#

  Hi, I am trying to retrieve file path for a html file that is embedded in resource (resx file) in VS2008 C# project. I want to give path of this file to native webbrowser control (PIEHtml) to be able to navigate (DTM_NAVIGATE) in my application. I know I can pass the string to this control using DTM_ADDTEXTW but since html text size is so big, I dont want to pass string to the control. I need to somehow extract the file path for this html file embedded inside resource manager. I tried using but this does not give the file path of html inside assembly: private ResourceManager resManager = new ResourceManager("AppName.FolderName.FileName", System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()); this.lbl.Text = resManager.GetString("StringInResources"); and also read Retrieving Resources in Satellite Assemblies but it did not solve my problem. • TinyMce + Ajax File Manager + Codeigniter = Little Problem

  OK, I'm using the following: TinyMCE, CodeIgniter, and the TinyMCE Ajax File Manager. I can upload correctly and it looks pretty good. However, when I view the HTML (from TinyMCE), this is what I get. <img src="../../../data/page/verde_enfemera.jpg" alt="" /> What I need to be getting is the following: <img src="http://localhost/http/data/page/verde_enfemera.jpg" alt="" /> Can someone help? EDIT: I changed the code in the HTML editor of Tinymce, then I saved it. When I re-opened it, the code was reverted back to the original "../.../../data", etc. please, help, someone.
