  • Keeping up with Technology

    - by kennedysteve
    If you're like me, you have a hard time keeping up with all the technologies out there. The reality is there's too many new technologies (languages, methodologies,  tools, etc). One of the ways I try to keep up with everything is by using good ol' RSS feeds in conjunction with Google Reader. Google Reader is both an online aggregator of RSS feeds, and it also has a good companion app on Google Android. The nicest part of Google Reader for me is the "All Listings" view which gives me a reverse chronological view of ALL articles (mixed together) regardless of the actual RSS feed.  This way, I get to see the newest articles first. I can then choose to hide the articles I've viewed, etc. Here is a list of my RSS feeds. Admittedly, some of these are all over the spectrum. But you might find one or two interesting. .NET Rocks! • Optional Parameters and Named Arguments in C# 4 (and a cool scenario w/ ASP.NET MVC 2)

    - by ScottGu
    [In addition to blogging, I am also now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu] This is the seventeenth in a series of blog posts I’m doing on the upcoming VS 2010 and .NET 4 release. Today’s post covers two new language feature being added to C# 4.0 – optional parameters and named arguments – as well as a cool way you can take advantage of optional parameters (both in VB and C#) with ASP.NET MVC 2. Optional Parameters in C# 4.0 C# 4.0 now supports using optional parameters with methods, constructors, and indexers (note: VB has supported optional parameters for awhile). Parameters are optional when a default value is specified as part of a declaration.  For example, the method below takes two parameters – a “category” string parameter, and a “pageIndex” integer parameter.  The “pageIndex” parameter has a default value of 0, and as such is an optional parameter: When calling the above method we can explicitly pass two parameters to it: Or we can omit passing the second optional parameter – in which case the default value of 0 will be passed:   Note that VS 2010’s Intellisense indicates when a parameter is optional, as well as what its default value is when statement completion is displayed: Named Arguments and Optional Parameters in C# 4.0 C# 4.0 also now supports the concept of “named arguments”.  This allows you to explicitly name an argument you are passing to a method – instead of just identifying it by argument position.  For example, I could write the code below to explicitly identify the second argument passed to the GetProductsByCategory method by name (making its usage a little more explicit): Named arguments come in very useful when a method supports multiple optional parameters, and you want to specify which arguments you are passing.  For example, below we have a method DoSomething that takes two optional parameters: We could use named arguments to call the above method in any of the below ways: Because both parameters are optional, in cases where only one (or zero) parameters is specified then the default value for any non-specified arguments is passed. ASP.NET MVC 2 and Optional Parameters One nice usage scenario where we can now take advantage of the optional parameter support of VB and C# is with ASP.NET MVC 2’s input binding support to Action methods on Controller classes. For example, consider a scenario where we want to map URLs like “Products/Browse/Beverages” or “Products/Browse/Deserts” to a controller action method.  We could do this by writing a URL routing rule that maps the URLs to a method like so: We could then optionally use a “page” querystring value to indicate whether or not the results displayed by the Browse method should be paged – and if so which page of the results should be displayed.  For example: /Products/Browse/Beverages?page=2. With ASP.NET MVC 1 you would typically handle this scenario by adding a “page” parameter to the action method and make it a nullable int (which means it will be null if the “page” querystring value is not present).  You could then write code like below to convert the nullable int to an int – and assign it a default value if it was not present in the querystring: With ASP.NET MVC 2 you can now take advantage of the optional parameter support in VB and C# to express this behavior more concisely and clearly.  Simply declare the action method parameter as an optional parameter with a default value: C# VB If the “page” value is present in the querystring (e.g. /Products/Browse/Beverages?page=22) then it will be passed to the action method as an integer.  If the “page” value is not in the querystring (e.g. /Products/Browse/Beverages) then the default value of 0 will be passed to the action method.  This makes the code a little more concise and readable. Summary There are a bunch of great new language features coming to both C# and VB with VS 2010.  The above two features (optional parameters and named parameters) are but two of them.  I’ll blog about more in the weeks and months ahead. If you are looking for a good book that summarizes all the language features in C# (including C# 4.0), as well provides a nice summary of the core .NET class libraries, you might also want to check out the newly released C# 4.0 in a Nutshell book from O’Reilly: It does a very nice job of packing a lot of content in an easy to search and find samples format. Hope this helps, Scott

  • Using the ASP.NET Membership API with SQL Server / SQL Azure: The new &ldquo;System.Web.Providers&rdquo; namespace

    - by Harish Ranganathan
    The Membership API came in .NET 2.0 and was a huge enhancement in building web applications with users, managing roles, permissions etc.,  The Membership API by default uses SQL Express and until Visual Studio 2008, it was available only through the ASP.NET Configuration manager screen (Website – ASP.NET Configuration) or (Project – ASP.NET Configuration) and for every application, one has to manually visit this place to start using the Security and other settings.  Upon doing that the default SQL Express database aspnet.mdf is created to store all the user profiles. Starting Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4.0, the Default Website template includes the Membership API controls as a part of the page i.e. When you create a “File – New – ASP.NET Web Application” or an “ASP.NET MVC Application”, by default the Login/Register controls are enabled in the MasterPage and they are termed under “ApplicationServices” setting in the web.config file with connection string pointed to the SQL Express database. In fact, when you run the default website and click on “Logon” –> “Register”, and enter the details for registration and click “Register”, that is the time the aspnet.mdf file is created with the tables for Users, Roles, UsersInRoles, Profile etc., Now, this uses the default SQL Express database within the App_Data folder.  If you want to move your Membership information to some other database such as SQL Server, SQL CE or SQL Azure, you need to manually run the aspnet_regsql command and specify the destination database name. This would create all the Tables, Procedures and Views required to handle the Membership information.  Thereafter you can change the connection string for “ApplicationServices” to point to the database where you had run all the scripts. Now, enter “System.Web.Providers” Alpha. This is available as a part of the NuGet package library.  Scott Hanselman has a neat post describing the steps required to get it up and running as well as doing the basic changes  at http://www.hanselman.com/blog/IntroducingSystemWebProvidersASPNETUniversalProvidersForSessionMembershipRolesAndUserProfileOnSQLCompactAndSQLAzure.aspx Pretty much, it covers what the new System.Web.Providers do. One thing I wanted to clarify is that, the new “System.Web.Providers” add a lot of new settings which are also marked as the defaults, in the web.config.  Even now, they use SQL Express as the default database.  But, if you change the connection string for “DefaultConnection” under connectionStrings to point to your SQL Server or SQL Azure, Membership API would now be able to create all the tables, procedures and views at the destination specified (i.e. SQL Server or SQL Azure). In my case, I modified the DefaultConneciton to point to my SQL Azure database.  Next, I hit F5 to run the application.  The default view loads.  I clicked on “LogOn” and then “Register” since I knew there are no tables/users as of then.  One thing to note is that, I had put “NewDB” as the database name in the connection string that points to SQL Azure.  NewDB wasn’t existing and I would assume it would be created before the tables/views/procedures for Membership are created. Once I clicked on the “Register” to register my first username, it took a while and then registered as well as logged in me in.  Also, I went to the SQL Azure Management Portal and verified that there exists “NewDB” which has just been created I could also connect to the SQL Azure database “NewDB” from Management Studio and found that the tables now don’t have the aspnet_ prefix.  The tables were simply Users, Roles, UsersInRoles, Profiles etc., So, with a few clicks and configuration change, I could actually set up the user base for my application on SQL Azure and even make the SessionState, Roles, Profiles being stored in SQL Azure database. The new System.Web.Proivders also required MARS (MultipleActiveResultSets=true) setting since it uses Entity Framework for the DAL operations.  Also, the “Project – ASP.NET Configuration” screen can be used to further create/manage users/roles etc., although the data is stored on the remote database. With that, a long pending request from the community to have the ability to configure and use remote databases for Application users management without having to run the scripts from SQL Express is fulfilled. Cheers !!!

  • Splash screen moves up before closing

    - by rturney
    In C# I am having a problem with the splash screen. When it is time to close and the main Form1 appears, it moves over to the upper right corner of Form1. It then disappears. I have never had this occur before and have just about run out of ideas to fix it. I want the splash screen to disappear in the center screen and not move over to the upper corner of the opening Form1. Here is the code: public Form1() { Splash mySplash = new Splash(); mySplash.TotalValue = 7; //or however many steps you must complete mySplash.Show(); mySplash.Update(); InitializeComponent(); //--<begin>-------------- this.Hide(); this.WindowState = FormWindowState.Normal; mySplash.Progress++; printDoc.PrintPage += new PrintPageEventHandler(printDoc_PrintPage); printBOM.PrintPage += new PrintPageEventHandler(printBOM_PrintPage); printList.PrintPage += new PrintPageEventHandler(printList_PrintPage); mySplash.Progress++; // using old Kodak Imaging OCX ! axImgEdit1.Image = "\\\\Netstore\\eng_share\\EView\\BOB-eView9.tif"; axImgEdit1.DisplayScaleAlgorithm = ImgeditLibCtl.DisplayScaleConstants.wiScaleOptimize; axImgEdit1.FitTo(0); axImgEdit1.Display(); mySplash.Progress++; //~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Getting printer info~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List<Win32_Printer> printerList = Win32_Printer.GetList(); int i = 0; foreach (Win32_Printer printer in printerList) { prnName = printer.Name; prnPort = printer.PortName; prnDriver = printer.DriverName; if (i == 0) { prnNameString = prnName; prnDriverString = prnDriver; prnPortString = prnPort; } else { prnNameString += "," + prnName; prnDriverString += "," + prnDriver; prnPortString += "," + prnPort; } i++; } mySplash.Progress++; EViewMethods.defaultPrn[0] = Settings.Default.DefaultPrinter; //defaultPrn[] is string array holding the default printer name, driver and port EViewMethods.defaultPrn[1] = Settings.Default.DefaultPrinterDriver; EViewMethods.defaultPrn[2] = Settings.Default.DefaultPrinterPort; //making this printer the system default printer object printerName = Settings.Default.DefaultPrinter; ManagementObjectSearcher searcher = new ManagementObjectSearcher("SELECT * FROM Win32_Printer"); ManagementObjectCollection collection = searcher.Get(); foreach (ManagementObject currentObject in collection) { if (currentObject["name"].ToString() == printerName.ToString()) { currentObject.InvokeMethod("SetDefaultPrinter", new object[] { printerName }); } } mySplash.Progress++; EViewMethods.reCenterEVafterDwgClose = Settings.Default.ReCenterEVafterDwgClose; if (Settings.Default.ReCenterEVafterDwgClose == true) recenterEViewAfterDrawingViewerClosesToolStripMenuItem.Checked = true; else recenterEViewAfterDrawingViewerClosesToolStripMenuItem.Checked = false; //------------------------------------------------------- EViewMethods.screenBehavior = Settings.Default.ViewStyle; normalToolStripMenuItem.Checked = false; clearViewToolStripMenuItem.Checked = false; clearviewDULevLRToolStripMenuItem.Checked = false; clearviewdULevLLToolStripMenuItem.Checked = false; clearviewdURevULToolStripMenuItem.Checked = false; clearviewdURevLLToolStripMenuItem.Checked = false; clearviewdURevLRToolStripMenuItem.Checked = false; smallScreenToolStripMenuItem.Checked = false; //Form1.ActiveForm.SetDesktopLocation(588, 312); //all screen behavior mode will begin centered on the screen EViewMethods.eviewUserPrefLocation = Settings.Default.FormEviewLocation; //------------------------------------------------------- EViewMethods.syncListToDwgNum = Settings.Default.SyncListDwgNum; if (EViewMethods.syncListToDwgNum == true) synchronizeListToActiveDwgToolStripMenuItem.Checked = true; else synchronizeListToActiveDwgToolStripMenuItem.Checked = false; toolStripStatusLabel1.Text = ""; toolStripStatusLabel2.Text = Settings.Default.ViewStyle; toolStripStatusLabel3.Text = Settings.Default.DefaultPrinter; //~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Assembly asm = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly(); AssemblyName asmName = asm.GetName(); EViewMethods.eviewVersion = asmName.Version.ToString(); radioPartInfo.Checked = true; disableAllSearch(); EViewMethods.userName = Environment.UserName; EViewMethods.openConnection(); mySplash.Progress++; EViewMethods.loadFavorites(listFavorites); mySplash.Close(); mySplash.Dispose(); this.Show(); this.ActiveControl = comboEntry; }

  • How to set up default schema name in JPA configuration?

    - by Roman
    I found that in hibernate config file we could set up parameter hibernate.default_schema: <hibernate-configuration> <session-factory> ... <property name="hibernate.default_schema">myschema</property> ... </session-factory> </hibernate-configuration> Now I'm using JPA and I want to do the same. Otherwise I have to add parameter schema to each @Table annotation like: @Entity @Table (name = "projectcategory", schema = "SCHEMANAME") public class Category implements Serializable { ... } As I understand this parameter should be somewhere in this part of configuration: <bean id="domainEntityManagerFactory" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean"> <property name="persistenceUnitName" value="JiraManager"/> <property name="dataSource" ref="domainDataSource"/> <property name="jpaVendorAdapter"> <bean class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.vendor.HibernateJpaVendorAdapter"> <property name="generateDdl" value="false"/> <property name="showSql" value="false"/> <property name="databasePlatform" value="${hibernate.dialect}"/> </bean> </property> </bean> <bean id="domainDataSource" class="com.mchange.v2.c3p0.ComboPooledDataSource" destroy-method="close"> <property name="driverClass" value="${db.driver}" /> <property name="jdbcUrl" value="${datasource.url}" /> <property name="user" value="${datasource.username}" /> <property name="password" value="${datasource.password}" /> <property name="initialPoolSize" value="5"/> <property name="minPoolSize" value="5"/> <property name="maxPoolSize" value="15"/> <property name="checkoutTimeout" value="10000"/> <property name="maxStatements" value="150"/> <property name="testConnectionOnCheckin" value="true"/> <property name="idleConnectionTestPeriod" value="50"/> </bean> ... but I can't find its name in google. Any ideas?

  • VS2010 Text Editor: How do I set the default formatting style for inline code blocks?

    - by nukefusion
    I've got a problem with the formatting of inline code blocks within the VS2010 text editor and wonder if anyone else has had similar problems and found the 'magic' setting I'm looking for. I'm working my way through tutorials in an MVC book. Whenever I add some inline code blocks to a view I want them formatted like so: <% foreach (var link in Model) { %> <a href="<%=Url.RouteUrl(link.RouteValues)%>"> <%=link.Text%> </a> <% } %> What I'm actually getting is this (auto-formatted by the IDE when I finish writing the code): <% foreach (var link in Model) { %> <a href="<%=Url.RouteUrl(link.RouteValues)%>"> <%=link.Text%> </a> <% } %> It's pretty irritating. Any ideas on how I can instruct the IDE to leave my <% % tags alone? I've been fiddling with options under "Tools - Options - Text Editor" for ages but alas am getting nowhere...

  • Kohana 3: How to find the active item in a dynamic menu

    - by Svish
    Maybe not the best explanation, but hear me out. Say I have the following in a config file called menu.php: // Default controller is 'home' and default action is 'index' return array( 'items' => array( 'Home' => '', 'News' => 'news', 'Resources' => 'resources', ), ); I now want to print this out as a menu, which is pretty simple: foreach(Kohana::config('menu.items') as $title => $uri) { echo '<li>' . HTML::anchor($uri, $title) . '</li>'; } However, I want to find the $uri that matches the current controller and action. And if the action is the default one or not. What I want to end up with is that menu item should have id="active-item" if it is the linking to the current controller, but the default action. And id="active-subitem if it is linking to the current controller and the action is not the default one. Hope that made sense... Anyone able to help me out here? Both in how to do this in Kohana 3 and also how it should be done in Kohana 3. I'm sure there are lots of ways, but yeah... any help is welcome :) Examples: domain.com -- Home should be active-item since it is the default controller domain.com/home -- Home should be active-item domain.com/home/index -- Home should be active-item since index is the default action domain.com/resources -- Resources should be active-item domain.com/resources/get/7 -- Resources should be active-subitem since get is not the default action

  • Android - Key Dispatching Timed Out

    - by Donal Rafferty
    In my Android application I am getting a very strange crash, when I press a button (Image) on my UI the entire application freezes and after a couple of seconds I getthe dreaded force close dialog appearing. It seems unlikely as several other buttons do the same without issue. How about the native layer? Could some code I've built with the NDK be causing the issue? Any other ideas as to what the cause of the issue might be?

  • Is possible to change default diff tool in Mercurial?

I can't find a reference in Mercurial documentation (I'm not talking about merge!). I would like to use Kdiff3 or WinMerge (I'm using Windows). Thanks for your time. Best regards.

  • script to recursively check for and select dependencies

    - by rp.sullivan
    I have written a script that does this but it is one of my first scripts ever so i am sure there is a better way:) Let me know how you would go about doing this. I'm looking for a simple yet efficient way to do this. Here is some important background info: ( It might be a little confusing but hopefully by the end it will make sense. ) 1) This image shows the structure/location of the relevant dirs and files. 2) The packages.file located at ./config/default/config/packages is a space delimited file. field5 is the "package name" which i will call $a for explanations sake. field4 is the name of the dir containing the $a.dir i will call $b field1 shows if the package is selected or not, "X"(capital x) for selected and "O"(capital o as in orange) for not selected. Here is an example of what the packages.file might contain: ... X ---3------ 104.800 database gdbm 1.8.3 / base/library CROSS 0 O -1---5---- 105.000 base libiconv 1.13.1 / base/tool CROSS 0 X 01---5---- 105.000 base pkgconfig 0.25 / base/tool CROSS 0 X -1-3------ 105.000 base texinfo 4.13a / base/tool CROSS DIETLIBC 0 O -----5---- 105.000 develop duma 2_5_15 / base/development CROSS NOPARALLEL 0 O -----5---- 105.000 develop electricfence 2_4_13 / base/development CROSS 0 O -----5---- 105.000 develop gnupth 2.0.7 / extra/development CROSS NOPARALLEL FPIC-QUIRK 0 ... 3) For almost every package listed in the "packages.file" there is a corresponding ".cache file" The .cache file for package $a would be located at ./package/$b/$a/$a.cache The .cache files contain a list of dependencies for that particular package. Here is an example of one of the .cache files might look like. Note that the dependencies are field2 of lines containing "[DEP]" These dependencies are all names of packages in the "package.file" [TIMESTAMP] 1134178701 Sat Dec 10 02:38:21 2005 [BUILDTIME] 295 (9) [SIZE] 11.64 MB, 191 files [DEP] 00-dirtree [DEP] bash [DEP] binutils [DEP] bzip2 [DEP] cf [DEP] coreutils ... So with all that in mind... I'm looking for a shell script that: From within the "main dir" Looks at the ./config/default/config/packages file and finds the "selected" packages and reads the corresponding .cache Then compiles a list of dependencies that excludes the already selected packages Then selects the dependencies (by changing field1 to X) in the ./config/default/config/packages file and repeats until all the dependencies are met Note: The script will ultimately end up in the "scripts dir" and be called from the "main dir". If this is not clear let me know what need clarification. For those interested I'm playing around with T2 SDE. If you are into playing around with linux it might be worth taking a look.

  • How do I change apache2 DocumentRoot (default snow leopard install) and not get "You don't have perm

    - by David Peek
    I'm trying to point DocumentRoot at a directory in my user folder. While I can happily point DocumentRoot at /Library/WebServer/Documents and ~/Sites I keep getting "You don't have permission to access / on this server." when I point it anywhere else. OK, I just found a solution mid-question (stack overflow is just that good) by changing the user/group apache runs under to myuser/admin. I'm sure there must be a better way though. Surely some kind of permissions magic on the directory I'm pointing at?

  • Is it possible to override the default logging for Glassfish v3?

    - by kgrad
    Related to this question. It appears that Glassfish is exporting slf4j into my application and overriding my logging solution. Is it possible for me to override Glassfish's logging and have my own logging solution take precedence? After searching, I have only found ways to modify the log using logging.properties. I am not married to my current implementation, but I am interested in making it work. thanks.

  • ASP.NET MVC - Data Annotations - Why add a default RequiredAttribute?

    - by redsquare
    Can anyone explain why it is assumed that a non nullable type property should always have a RequiredAttribue? I am trying to write a label helper that will auto append * or change the css class so that I can indicate to the user that the field is required. However when querying the metadata the non nullable properties end up with a required attribute. MVC Source Code: protected override IEnumerable<ModelValidator> GetValidators( ModelMetadata metadata, ControllerContext context, IEnumerable<Attribute> attributes) { _adaptersLock.EnterReadLock(); try { List<ModelValidator> results = new List<ModelValidator>(); if (metadata.IsRequired && !attributes.Any(a => a is RequiredAttribute)) { //******* Why Do this? attributes = attributes.Concat(new[] { new RequiredAttribute() }); } foreach (ValidationAttribute attribute in attributes.OfType<ValidationAttribute>()) { DataAnnotationsModelValidationFactory factory; if (!_adapters.TryGetValue(attribute.GetType(), out factory)) factory = _defaultFactory; results.Add(factory(metadata, context, attribute)); } return results; } finally { _adaptersLock.ExitReadLock(); } }

  • Zend Framework: Zend_translate and routing related issue

    - by Dan
    I have implemented Zend_Navigation, Zend_Translate in my application. The routing is setup in Bootstrap.php like below. $fc = Zend_Controller_Front::getInstance(); $zl=new Zend_Locale(); Zend_Registry::set('Zend_Locale',$zl); $lang=$zl->getLanguage().'_'.$zl->getRegion(); $router = $fc->getRouter(); $route = new Zend_Controller_Router_Route(':lang/:module/:controller/:action/*', array( 'lang'=>$lang, 'module'=>'default', 'controller'=>'index', 'action'=>'index' )); $router->addRoute('default', $route); $fc->setRouter($router); $fc->registerPlugin( new Plugin_LanguageSetup()); in LaunguageSetup Plugin i have defined the dispatchLoopStartup method to do the checking of the language param public function dispatchLoopStartup(Zend_Controller_Request_Abstract $request) { $this->createLangUrl($request); $this->_language = $request->getParam('lang'); if ((!isset($this->_language)) || !in_array($this->_language, $this->_languagesArray)) { $this->_language = 'en_US'; $request->setParam('lang', 'en_US'); } $file = APPLICATION_PATH.$this->_directory.$this->_language.'.csv'; $translate = new Zend_Translate('csv', $file, $this->_language); Zend_Registry::set('Zend_Translate', $translate); $zl = Zend_Registry::get('Zend_Locale'); $zl->setLocale($this->_language); Zend_Registry::set('Zend_Locale', $zl); // $fc = Zend_Controller_Front::getInstance(); // $router = $fc->getRouter(); // $route = new Zend_Controller_Router_Route(':lang/:module/:controller/:action/*', array( // 'lang'=>$this->_language, 'module'=>'default', 'controller'=>'index', 'action'=>'index' // )); // $router->addRoute('default', $route); // $fc->setRouter($router); } What happen is the language always have the default value, the 'lang' param never default lang value in route, even if i type it in the address bar manually i.e /en_US/module/controller/action/ It always get revert back to the default Zend_locale(); Only way i can fix it is to setup the route again in the plugin and inject a correct language value as default. Any Idea why?

  • How do I set the default selection for NSTreeController at startup?

    - by John Gallagher
    The Background I've built a source list (similar to iTunes et al.) in my Cocoa app. I've got an NSOutlineView, with Value column bound to arrangedObjects.name key path of an NSTreeController. The NSTreeController accesses JGSourceListNode entities in a Core Data store. I have three subclasses of JGSourceListNode - JGProjectNode, JGGroupNode and JGFolderNode. I have selectedIndexPaths on NSTreeController bound to an NSArray called selectedIndexPaths in my App Delegate. On startup, I search for group nodes and if they're not found in the core data store I create them: if ([allGroupNodes count] == 0) { JGGroupNode *rootTrainingNode = [JGGroupNode insertInManagedObjectContext:context]; [rootTrainingNode setNodeName:@"TRAIN"]; JGProjectNode *childUntrainedNode = [JGProjectNode insertInManagedObjectContext:context]; [childUntrainedNode setParent:rootTrainingNode]; [childUntrainedNode setNodeName:@"Untrained"]; JGGroupNode *rootBrowsingNode = [JGGroupNode insertInManagedObjectContext:context]; [rootBrowsingNode setNodeName:@"BROWSE"]; JGFolderNode *childFolder = [JGFolderNode insertInManagedObjectContext:context]; [childFolder setNodeName:@"Folder"]; [childFolder setParent:rootBrowsingNode]; [context save:nil]; } What I Want When I start the app, I want both top level groups to be expanded and "Untrained" to be highlighted as shown: The Problem I put the following code in the applicationDidFinishLaunching: method of the app delegate: [sourceListOutlineView expandItem:[sourceListOutlineView itemAtRow:0]]; [sourceListOutlineView expandItem:[sourceListOutlineView itemAtRow:2]]; NSIndexPath *rootIndexPath = [NSIndexPath indexPathWithIndex:0]; NSIndexPath *childIndexPath = [rootIndexPath indexPathByAddingIndex:0]; [self setSelectedIndexPaths:[NSArray arrayWithObject:childIndexPath]]; but the outline view seems to not have been prepared yet, so this code does nothing. Ideally, eventually I want to save the last selection the user had made and restore this on a restart. The Question I'm sure it's possible using some crazy KVO to observe when the NSTreeController or NSOutlineView gets populated then expand the items and change the selection, but that feels clumsy and too much like a work around. How would I do this elegantly?
