  • Drop in rankings after removing sitewide backlinks

    Here's the scenario: I have a small web design business and was using a branded backlink on the bottom of all client sites. Recently this has become a bit taboo with the Google updates so I went back to a few of my sites and made it so there's only a homepage backlink. After doing this, I've had a drop in rankings, despite this apparently being a best practice. Is this likely a temporary drop that will pick back up? For any new sites, I still want to have a link on all pages of client sites as it's good advertising. I plan to have a do-follow homepage link and then no-follow every other link - is this a good idea?

    I'm trying to set up Apache to use the VirtualDocumentRoot directive but my sites aren't all exactly the same. Most of the sites have a drupal folder which should be the root but there are a few really old drupal sites, a few rails sites, some django sites, etc. that want the Document root to be / or some other folder. Is there a way to set up VirtualDocumentRoot based on a conditional or is there a way to use RewriteRule/Cond to detect that / is the incorrect folder if there is a drupal folder or a public folder?   • How to define 2-bit numbers in C, if possible?

    For my university process I'm simulating a process called random sequential adsorption. One of the things I have to do involves randomly depositing squares (which cannot overlap) onto a lattice until there is no more room left, repeating the process several times in order to find the average 'jamming' coverage %. Basically I'm performing operations on a large array of integers, of which 3 possible values exist: 0, 1 and 2. The sites marked with '0' are empty, the sites marked with '1' are full. Initially the array is defined like this: int i, j; int n = 1000000000; int array[n][n]; for(j = 0; j < n; j++) { for(i = 0; i < n; i++) { array[i][j] = 0; } } Say I want to deposit 5*5 squares randomly on the array (that cannot overlap), so that the squares are represented by '1's. This would be done by choosing the x and y coordinates randomly and then creating a 5*5 square of '1's with the topleft point of the square starting at that point. I would then mark sites near the square as '2's. These represent the sites that are unavailable since depositing a square at those sites would cause it to overlap an existing square. This process would continue until there is no more room left to deposit squares on the array (basically, no more '0's left on the array) Anyway, to the point. I would like to make this process as efficient as possible, by using bitwise operations. This would be easy if I didn't have to mark sites near the squares. I was wondering whether creating a 2-bit number would be possible, so that I can account for the sites marked with '2'. Sorry if this sounds really complicated, I just wanted to explain why I want to do this.

I can't access any files unless I am root. $ ls -als sites/default total 0 ? ?--------- ? ? ? ? ? . ? ?--------- ? ? ? ? ? .. ? ?--------- ? ? ? ? ? default.settings.php ? ?--------- ? ? ? ? ? files ? ?--------- ? ? ? ? ? settings.php When I log in as root, I can edit all of the files, and their permissions appear correctly. I do not know how to undo the damage caused by using -r with chmod instead of -R. Any Suggestions?

  • NGINX Configuration Error using Codex Example: Is This a Typo in Codex?

    I installed NGINX using this tutorial: C3M Digital NGINX Tuturial but after reading this article on security issues with "cut and paste" configuration tutorials: Neal Poole's article regarding security and NGINX configuration I decided to follow Poole's suggestion to use the configuration suggested in the WordPress codex: Codex on NGINX Configuration I used the Codex configuration for a multisite installation using W3 Total Cache. When attempting to start NGINX I get an error saying that the /etc/nginx/nginx.conf test failed. The error message was: "Restarting nginx: nginx: [emerg] unknown directive "//" in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/teambrazil.com:18" When I looked at my site specific configuration at that path I noticed the rewrite rule in the server block was: rewrite ^ $scheme://teambrazil.conf$request_uri redirect; That line in the Codex example was: rewrite ^ $scheme://mysite.conf$request_uri redirect; That looked like a mistake to me, and I changed my line to: rewrite ^ $scheme://teambrazil.com$request_uri redirect; I then attempted to restart NGINX but got the same error message. My question is: is that a mistake, and is there anything more I have to do aside from restarting NGINX after making this change. As suggested by both tutorials I set up the directories: /etc/nginx/sites-enabled and /etc/nginx/sites-available and created the appropriate symbolic links using: touch /etc/nginx/sites-available/teambrazil.com ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/teambrazil.com /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/teambrazil.com Is there something else I need to consider after making this correction? Or was it not an error in the first place? I'm pretty stuck here. BTW, I am using Debian squeeze as an OS on Amerinoc's VPS. I'm just getting familiar with VPS administration and am pretty much a noob. Thanks very much, would appreciate any input.

  • How would I change the DocumenRoot on the version of Apache that came pre-installed on my Mac OS X s

    OK, so I want to take advantage of the Apache server that comes installed on my Mac OS X system (which means, I would like not to have to install my own version of Apache since I might as well tryto use what comes bundled), and as such, I went to change some settings in the configuration file: /etc/apache2/httpd.conf Namely, I changed the these two lines: DocumentRoot "/Users/myusername/Sites" <Directory "/Users/myusername/Sites"> So that they initially pointed to a folder in my Dropbox folder (so I could have my docs sync to my Dropbox): DocumentRoot "/Users/myusername/Dropbox/public_html" <Directory "/Users/myusername/Dropbox/public_html"> That didn't work. So then I figured, ok maybe it was too much to ask to make folder in my Dropbox be my document root. So then I thought, what if I make the Document root another folder of my choosing like so: DocumentRoot "/Users/myusername/dev-sites/public_html" <Directory "/Users/myusername/dev-sites/public_html"> and that didn't work either. After looking within the httpd.conf file for clues it seems that only two directories appear to work as Document root paths for the Apache that comes bundled with Mac OS X: /Users/myusername/Sites (or ~/Sites) and /Library/WebServer/Documents/ But trying to use any other directories didn't seem to work. I would get 403 errors on my browser. I was wondering if there was some other settings to change on the httpd.conf file or any permissions to set to make this work. Any help would be appreciated and many thanks in advance.

  • Website latency and bad tcp packets

    I have multiple websites hosted on a Linode VPS and I'm having an issue with one of them: every page that I try to load has about 10 seconds latency. Apache logs are clean and the other websites on the same machine are running well. At a first glance I tought it was a memory problem since the VPS has got only 512M, but from the linode dashboard CPU and Disk I/O are normal. Anyway here we have the ram status: $ free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 487 463 23 0 2 55 -/+ buffers/cache: 404 82 Swap: 255 155 100 Only 23M free, but if it was a memory problem why other websites are going as usual? I took a live capture with wireshark, and there are some duplicates SYN ACK packets just before the 10 seconds gap. I'm out of ideas, looking for some clues.   • Domain name is bringing up wrong site

    I have a VPS that hosts several domains. I have set up Apache in the following manner: First VirtualHost /etc/apache2/sites-available/somedomain.com <VirtualHost somedomain.com:80> ServerName somedomain.com ServerAlias www.somedomain.com ... </VirtualHost> Second VirtualHost /etc/apache2/sites-available/someotherdomain.com <VirtualHost someotherdomain.com:80> ServerName someotherdomain.com ServerAlias www.someotherdomain.com ... </VirtualHost> Then I symlink the config files from sites-available to sites-enabled and all is well. I had a need to 'turn off' someotherdomain.com, so I removed the symlink to /etc/apache2/sites-available/someotherdomain.com from sites-enabled and the site no longer shows up... BUT typing someotherdomain.com into a web browser brings up somedomain.com!!! I need it to not resolve at all. Does somethiing need to be done in the VirtualHost to just automatically return a 500 or something along those lines. I really don't want people to reach one website from a different domain. Thanks!   • Windows Server 2003 can't see Vista machine

    Hi there, I've got a real PITA problem that I'm sure has a really simple solution. I have a Windows Server 2003 machine that needs to be able to see the network name of a Vista box - but refuses to. It can see the Vista box (and even access its shared folder) if I enter the Vista box's IP address. Problem is: SQL Server refuses to do Replication with anything other than the "actual server name". That means that the 2003 machine needs to be able to connect through the Vista machines network name... not just its IP address. I'm guessing it's a simple incompatibility between OS's, but I'm sure there's got to be a simple way of fixing it. Note: Yes, the Vista machine can connect to 2003 machine, no problem. And other machines in the office can connect to both the Vista machine and 2003 (they have more recent OS's). Thanks for any help!

The .vbs script stopped successfully executing... but oddly it worked fine when ran manually! The error given in these circumstances was always "Timeout". We thought we try a little creative thinking, and run the .vbs another way: Via a .bat file. Again we hit weird issues, but with a little more debugging information, this time around. The .bat file is nothing more than... CScript "C:\location\script.vbs" > Log.txt But the Task Scheduler fails with the following error: 0x1: An incorrect function was called or an unknown function was called. The log.txt file says: CScript Error: Initialization of the Windows Script Host failed. (Not enough storage is available to process this command. ) But get this: The .bat file executes perfectly (vbs script and all) if it's executed with a double click! There's only a problem when it's run by Task Scheduler. What the hell? We're running Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64) and yes, the Task Sheduler's results are the same whether the user is logged in or not. Also, the user that can run the scripts successfully manually, is also the same user that runs the scripts in Task Scheduler. Thanks for any help for this weird problem!

    This question has previously been asked, but that was a year ago and I wanted to know if there had been any developments since then. Basically we'd like to use a MemCached Server on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine... which is only x64, obviously. I haven't found any details on a Win64 version of MemCached, but there is still the solution from the previous thread (which I haven't tried yet) to use a bit of software called MemCacheD Manager running MemCached 1.2.6. However, the current version of MCd is 1.4.4 and I was wondering if there had been any improvements since then.

Not knowing any good reason why the Task Scheduler should start having problems, we thought we'd try a little "creative thinking", and run the .vbs another way: Via a .bat file executed by the Task Scheduler. Again we hit weird issues, but with a little more debugging information, this time around. The .bat file run by Task Scheduler is nothing more than...   • Weird "missing" CD/DVD driver during Windows Server 2008 installation

    Hi. We have an old PowerEdge 860 that we're trying to install Windows Server 2008 R2 onto. At present the machine doesn't have any OS installed, so we're doing a clean install from a DVD. Pretty simple stuff. The problem is that, although the installation process starts off well (asking for language and locale settings), as soon as we click "Install Now" we're told "A required CD/DVD device driver is missing." The operating system has already booted from our only DVD drive(!). I've seen other people complain about this problem (usually in relation to installing Vista or Windows 7) but I've not found a 100% solution yet. (Our DVD drive is a Hitachi LG GWA-4400N, salvaged from an old laptop. There have never been any drivers released for this device, nor any firmware updates.) The most promising lead I have is from someone claiming that Windows is actually asking for a driver for the ATAPI/IDE Controller here. UPDATE See my answer below... It was most likely a corrupt download. (*shame*) I will update this question when I know for sure.

Re:model changes, it's ok to ask the developer when they try to change it or have a set of sensible defaults. Here is the challenge: The above code should work with very little modification or thinking required. Why must we put up with compromise when we know better? It's 2010, we should be able to code scalable, simple databases in our sleep. If you think this is important, please upvote!

    Hi I'm somewhat of a newbie to python and I'm using app engine and aptanna studio - I need to run some python shell commands so that i can complete the tasks in this Tutorial on how to set up 118 and django. I have got this all working but i don't understand how i run the python commands to compile the dictionarys such as $ PYTHONPATH=/path/to/googleappengine/python/lib/django/ /path/to/googleappengine/python/lib/django/django/bin/make-messages.py -a To be honest - why am i saying that! I dont know where in aptanna studio i run this command -then worse I don't quite understand what exactly i type based on the above command line. My path to google app engine is D:\Program Files\Google\google_appengine\ Can anyone help shed some light on how i do this from aptanna / the root of my project??
