• Getting kernel errors when manually mounting VirtualBox shared folders

  Updated: I've rephrased this problem as I understand it a bit more now (and have encountered another problem). I'm using a Fedora 15 guest on a Windows 7 host using VirtualBox. I am trying to mount a partition on the host PC as a shared folder for use in the guest. The folder appears in /media and is accessible when I use the auto-mount feature when setting up the shared folder, but when I attempt to mount without auto-mount I get the following error: $ sudo mount.vboxsf data /mnt/host_data /sbin/mount.vboxsf: Could not add an entry to the mount table.: Invalid argument In addition a popup appears (part of Fedora/GNOME) reporting a crash in the kernel package: WARNING: at lib/list_debug.c:26 __list_add+0x3e/0x81() However the shared folder seems to work, I can certainly browse it (although everything seems to be executable, probably down to a Windows host). Is there something wrong with what I'm doing or is this a bug (and in which case should it be reported to the Linux Kernel team or VirtualBox)?

• clojure.algo.monad strange m-plus behaviour with parser-m - why is second m-plus evaluated?

  I'm getting unexpected behaviour in some monads I'm writing. I've created a parser-m monad with (def parser-m (state-t maybe-m)) which is pretty much the example given everywhere (here, here and here) I'm using m-plus to act a kind of fall-through query mechanism, in my case, it first reads values from a cache (database), if that returns nil, the next method is to read from "live" (a REST call). However, the second value in the m-plus list is always called, even though its value is disgarded (if the cache hit was good) and the final return is that of the first monadic function. Here's a cutdown version of the issue i'm seeing, and some solutions I found, but I don't know why. My questions are: Is this expected behaviour or a bug in m-plus? i.e. will the 2nd method in a m-plus list always be evaluated if the first item returns a value? Minor in comparison to the above, but if i remove the call _ (fetch-state) from checker, when i evaluate that method, it prints out the messages for the functions the m-plus is calling (when i don't think it should). Is this also a bug? Here's a cut-down version of the code in question highlighting the problem. It simply checks key/value pairs passed in are same as the initial state values, and updates the state to mark what it actually ran. The first function to m-plus (as seen in the final output) is what is returned from it. Now, I've found if I pass a filler into m-plus that does nothing (i.e. uncomment the (filler) line) then the output is correct, the :b value isn't evaluated. If I don't have the filler method, and make the first method test fail (i.e. change it to (check-k-v :a 2) then again everything is good, I don't get a call to check :c, only a and b are tested. From my understanding of what the state-t maybe-m transformation is giving me, then the m-plus function should look like: (defn m-plus [left right] (fn [state] (if-let [result (left state)] result (right state)))) which would mean that right isn't called unless left returns nil/false. I'd be interested to know if my understanding is correct or not, and why I have to put the filler method in to stop the extra evaluation (whose effects I don't want to happen). • How do I minor upgrade MySQL on Windows?

  I currently have MySQL 5.1.35 installed on a Windows 2008 server via the MSI installer. I need to upgrade to the latest 5.1.44 to fix a bug, but docs were not clear on how to do this. I ran the MSI installer, but it did not give me any upgrade option so I quit it. I am weary because it's a production machine with many PHP websites running on it. Also, my data directory is not the default one, it's kept on another partition. How can I upgrade it? Thanks for any help.

• Windows 7 - problems launching default application

  Just built up a new W7 PC. I've noticed some strange issues with launching default applications. I've got Visual Studio & SQL Server Management Studio set run as administrator when launched. If i double click a .sql file SSMS opens ok but the file itself does not get loaded. If I do the same with a .sln then I get nothing at all from Visual Studio. For the latter I presume the UAC prompt is hidden somewhere waiting for me to say it's ok to launch the app but i've no idea what's happening with SSMS. Is this a W7 bug or are there some settings somewhere that I can tweak to improve this behaviour?

• How do you enable view source in ie8 when it gets magically diabled

  I have multiple computers that all seem to have View Source disabled from the content menu when you right click on a web page. Now I know it's not that the web page is some how disabling it, I'm pretty sure thats not even possible. But alas I have at least 3 machines in my office (not on AD) that have this problem. I have also worked on clients computers that have this same issue. It's down right maddening! I tried to Google for it, but it just shows results from the dawn of IE6 in all of it's "glory" with a bug where if the cache was full it would be disabled. But this is not the case in IE8. Any body have a clue why this is happening, or a fix for it? Maybe a reg setting? Update: So I got a little closer to solving it, but there was still an issue on one computer where it allowed it not is HTTP, but not in HTTPS. One other computer works correctly in both. • Migrating Printers from XP to 7 (using USMT 4.0)

  I'm attempting to migrate a user from an XP machine to a 7 machine, using USMT 4.0 (User State Migration Tool, from Microsoft). For some reason the migration of printers isn't working, and none of the topics at Microsoft's TechNet are helping me out. • CentOS - Configuring Puppet to play nice with SELinux

  I am running into an issue every time I attempt to start the puppetmasterd service, for which I receive the following error message: root@service1 ~ # -> /etc/init.d/puppetmaster start Starting puppetmaster: Could not prepare for execution: Got 1 failure(s) while initializing: change from absent to directory failed: Could not set 'directory on ensure: Permission denied - /etc/puppet/ssl [FAILED] Apparently there was a known issue with this scenario as outlined in this bug report, however in the bug report it states the issue has been resolved in selinux-policy-3.9.16-29.fc15, but the latest CentOS default upstream version is 3.7.19-155.el6_3.4. So I am trying to figure out the best solution. I can either create a local security policy to allow puppetmasterd the access it needs, or keep researching and install a newer version of selinux-policy outside of the default upstream channel. Anyone have any recommendations? • Sendmail Alias for Nonlocal Email Account

  I admin a server which is running a number of web applications for a software dev team (source control, bug tracking, etc). The server has sendmail running solely as a transport to the departmental email server over which I have no control. We have someone who is still in the department but no longer on the dev team so I need to configure the transport agent to redirect all outgoing email (which would be coming from these applications) to the person that has taken their place. I added an entry in /etc/aliases like such: [email protected]: [email protected] But when I run /etc/init.d/sendmail newaliases I get the following error: /etc/mail/aliases: line 32: [email protected]... cannot alias non-local names So clearly I'm doing something I shouldn't. Is there a way to get aliases to work with non-local names or alternatively is their a way to accomplish my goal of redirecting outgoing mail for this user to another one? Technical Specs if the matter: Ubuntu 6.06 sendmail 8.13 (ubuntu provided package)

• Can installing URL Rewrite 2.0 on production IIS 7.5 have a negative impact?

  We have a Windows 2008 R2 server with IIS 7.5 and a lot of customer websites. Being no sys-admin but a developer, I hate to touch that wonderfully running system. However, I'd like to update the IIS plugin URL Rewrite to version 2.0 via Web Platform Installer. I do not want to do anything that might compromise the server, hence the question: can I expect it to work with at least a 99% chance? I did not find any bug reports or reviews on the web, so I'd like to hear an expert on that.

• 504 Gateway Time-out after php fatal error

  I'm using nginx and php-fpm to develop a symfony2 based website, under ubuntu 12.10 (yes, I know I'm using a beta OS). Everything was working out fine until, due to an error on my code, I called an unexisting function, and got the following: Fatal error: Call to a member function (....) This isn't a problem (it's a bug in my code, easily fixable), but after this, no other page loads. My browser just keeps trying to load the page from the webserver, until nginx timeouts (after +- 30s, which should be some default timeout) and returns: 504 Gateway Time-out Restarting php-fpm solves the issue. Nginx logs show a timeout message, and nothing appears on php-fpm logs, even if I set them to debug level. I tried switching from fpm to fastcgi, and the same thing happens. I've looked around, but all similar error are related to big requests/file handling, which isn't the case. All the pages on my website load in a few seconds, even under development conditions (no caching, etc).

• IE9 development tools giving "Unable to attach to the process." error

  Notice: I have now rebuilt my machine to remove this bug, so I can no longer verify any answers. I recently installed Internet Explorer 9, and activated the development tools by pressing F12; I then clicked "script" and the "start debugging" button but I got the following error: Unable to attach to the process. Another debugger might be attached to the process. I get this message regardless of the site I am on (currently I'm on google.com). I have no other applications running, and have rebooted my machine. Can anyone suggest why this may be appearing?

• Meta refresh tag not working in (my) firefox?

  Code like on this page does not work in (my) Firefox 3.6 and also not in Fx4 (WinXPsp3) Works in IE8, Safari 5, Opera 11, Mozilla 1.7, Chrome 9 <meta http-equiv=refresh content="12; URL=meta2.htm"> <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="1; URL=http://fully_qualified_url.com/page2.html"> are completely ignored Not that I use such back-button killing things, but a LOT of sites do, possibly including my linux apache it seems when it wants to show a 503 error page... If I firebug or look at generated content, I do not see the refresh tag changed in any way so I am really curious what kind of plugin/addon could block me which is why I googled (in vain) for a known bug... In about:config I have accessibility.blockautorefresh; false so that is not it. I ran in safe mode and OH MY GOD, STACKEXCHANGE IS FULL OF ADS but no redirect

• Machine only responds to network requests from machines it is pinging

  I have two machines. WOPR: Ubuntu server edition 10.10 LTS 32 bit Adam Selene: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit / Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 LTS 64 bit I want to be able to SSH from Adam Selene to WOPR, so I connect them to the same network. Here's where things get weird. I cannot connect to WOPR in any way under normal circumstances. But, if WOPR is pinging Adam, then it starts responding to ping requests, HTTP gets, and SSH tunnels. I'm an amateur, and brand new to Ubuntu server, so I suspect there's a misconfiguration somewhere, but there's an off chance it's a bug in the OS. Does anyone know what might cause this behavior? • What could cause sudden crash of a MySQL 5.0.67 installation?

  I have an old Ubuntu 8.10 32-bit with MySQL 5.0.67. There's 5.7GB of data in it and it grows by about 100MB every day. About 3 days ago, the MySQL instance begin dying suddenly and quitely (no log entry) during the nightly mysqldump. What could be causing it? Upgrading MySQL is a long-term project for me, unless there happens to be a specific bug in 5.0.67 then I guess I'll just need to reprioritize. I'm hoping somebody might be familiar with this problem since this is a fairly popular version bundled with Ubuntu 8.10. Thanks

• Apache Subversion and Sudo - Why can't I resolve this hostname?

  Okay, I made a mistake and I'll be the first to admit I'm new at this setup. I built a bare bones kit, installed Ubuntu on it, and attempted to set up a source control server for a project some friend and I were going to work on. Unfortunately, I screwed up. I followed a dodgy tutorial from 2005 and when it didn't work, started mixing and matching trying to get to the source of my problem. So now I sit before you, a broken and miserable man. Desperate to escape this annoying echo of 'Unable to resolve host computer.repositoryname.com', I uninstalled apache and subversion. That did not fix it. Next I tried to edit my /etc/hosts, going so far as to remove the reference to '127.0.1.1 computername'. Still I'm plagued. I know I messed up, is there any way to track down this wayward bug?

• How to use graphical line drawing characters with Midnight Commander on OS X under ssh?

  I discovered that when I do ssh to a machine using OS X 10.6 and use mc I do not see the graphical line drawing characters. This does not happen if I open terminal and start mc. I'm connecting using putty configured to use xterm-color, configuraton that works just fine if I do ssh to a linux machine. The mc from OS X is version 4.7.0 (installed using macports). What locale returns: LC_CTYPE="C" <== ssh LC_CTYPE="UTF-8" <== Terminal.app ssh: mc display bits shows: 7-bit ASCII (changing does not help, it defaults to the same value) Terminal.app: mc display bits shows: UTF-8 The environment shows TERM=xterm-color in both cases Terminal.app and ss but mc looks different. • What's the meaning of logging in as "[email protected]:something"

  My Windows 2008 R2 machine is joined to a domain. In the logon screen, if I type in "[email protected]:something" as the username, I can still logon properly, what's the meaning of ":something" appended at the end? I can even see the current user is displayed as "[email protected]:something" in the switch user screen. Is it a feature in Windows? Or is it just a bug? If it is a feature, what's the difference between logging in as "[email protected]" and logging in as "[email protected]:something"? Note that I tried different combinations like "mydomain\username:something" and "mydomain.com:something\username". None of them work except "[email protected]:something".

• Sometimes tabs in notepad++ won't make a new window when dragged out

  Long-time Linux user on a Windows 7 machine, using Notepad++ to edit multiple text files. Sometimes I can drag a tab out of the notepad++ window onto the desktop to get a new notepad++ window. This is a very nice feature. But sometimes when I try to drag a tab out, nothing happens. I don't see what is different about these tabs or the files they contain. It is repeatable; the same tab still won't make a new window. I'm not familiar enough with Windows and its strange ways to begin to guess what is going on, unless it's a bug. How can I make all tabs draggable-to-new-windowable, no exceptions?

• How to restore one contact from Address Book with Time Machine

  I want to restore one contact from my Address Book with Time Machine. To do so, I select the contact in Address Book. Then, I press the Time Machine icon in the dock. Then my address book is "taken into space". However, when I browse back in time (either pressing the arrow back, or selecting a time on the right), the contact details do not change. And I am sure the data has been changed between dates. Also, when I do press restore, it's still the new data, not the backup. Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong? I'm using OS X 10.6.3 in combination with a external USB drive on an iMac.

• Is there any danger in disabling windows firewall on a azure worker role?

  I'm trying to troubleshoot a bug on our Azure worker role where we occasionally get the error "Unable to read data from the transport connection: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine". This error occurs when we are connecting to outside resources like google auth servers. A few people have recommended disabling the firewall\antivirus on the server. I'm just wondering what kind of security risk we would take by doing this. The server doesn't have iis installed but would it be vulnerable to hacking without the firewall? Thanks

  BSOD constantly and the disk indicator is frozen. Error do not happen immediately, usually an hour after boot up. Here is the Minidump: Bug Check Code = 0x00000124 Caused By Driver = ntoskrnl.exe Caused By Address = ntoskrnl.exe+4b094c Crash Address = ntoskrnl.exe+4b094c Seems to be hardware problem, but I checked RAM, no error. I have two HDs installed, system is on SSD, data is on HDD. Checked SSD with the properties-tools-error-checking , no error. Re-installed several times, still happens even after removed HDD. Configuration: SSD: Crucial M4-CT064M4SSD2 with Firmware 0009 Intel HM65 CPU: i7-2630QM The SSD is set correctly, SATA III 6Gb/s enabled, and everything worked perfectly for nearly a year.

• Kaspersky processing error Explorer.exe (recycle bin)

  I get daily critical errors from Kaspersky involving Explorer.exe... The file in question is almost always in the Recycle Bin, or something on the desktop. Here is an example error detail: Event type: Processing error Application\Name: EXPLORER.EXE Application\Path: C:\WINDOWS\ Application\Process ID: 2364 Application\Options: C:\windows\Explorer.EXE Component: File Anti-Virus Result\Description: Processing error Object: C:\$Recycle.Bin\S-1-5-21-1403139956-787289773-2644151291-500\$RIKKQKS Object\Type: File Object\Path: C:\$Recycle.Bin\S-1-5-21-1403139956-787289773-2644151291-500\ Object\Name: $RIKKQKS Reason: Read error Google searches didn't offer much insight, so I thought I'd ask here if anyone has encountered a similar situation. Not sure if it's a bug, something to be concerned about, or an easy fix, etc. I usually just empty the recycle bin for a temporary fix, but would like to get to the root of the error. Thoughts?
