• Recommend a free temperature-monitoring utility for cores + video card, on Vista?

  Looking for your recommendations for a free temperature-monitoring utility, for my PC (Core 2) and graphics card for Vista. (Question reposted with the hyperlinks now I have 10 reputation). I don't want all the geeky details, I don't overclock, I don't see the need to mess with my fan speeds or motherboard settings, I just want something fairly basic to help with basic troubleshooting of intermittent overheats on video card and/or mobo: must run on Windows Vista (yes, don't laugh). ideally displays temperature when minimized to toolbar, and/or: automatically alerts me when temperature on either core or the video card exceeds a threshold ideally measures temperature of video card and system as well, not just the cores. HDD temperature is not necessary I think. logging is nice, graphs are also nice portability to Linux and Mac is nice Apparently Everest is the best paid option, but I'm not prepared to spend $40. I found the following free options, but no head-to-head at-a-glance comparison: CoreTemp (only does cores, not video card?) Open Hardware Monitor (nice graphs, displays when minimized to toolbar, no alerts) RealTemp (has alerts, works minimized, lightweight install) HWMonitor (no alerts, CNET: "[free version is] simple but effective") from CPUID CPUCool (not free: 21-day trialware, then $18) SpeedFan from Almico (too geeky, detail overload; CNET: "most users won't be able to make head or tail of the data this utility provides") Motherboard Monitor (CNET: not recommended, requires expert knowledge of your mobo, dangerous) Intel Thermal Analysis Tool (only does cores, not video card? has logging) Useful discussions I found: hardwarecanucks.com , superuser.com 1, 2 , forums.techarena.in (Update: I downloaded Real Temp 3.60 and it meets all my needs, the customizable alert temperature is great. Open Hardware Monitor seems to be the other one that mostly meets my needs, except no alerts; but it is portable. I tried SpeedFan but the interface is very cluttered, too much unnecessary detail (needs a Basic/Advanced mode and a revamp of the interface.) The answer to my underlying issue is nVidia Geforce LE 7500 video card which runs very hot.)

  We had a hard disc crash of one of two hard discs in a software raid with a LVM on top. The server is running Citrix xenserver. On the hard disk which is still intact, the volume group gets detected well, but only one LV is left. • Host system resets (crashes) when using VMWare or VirtualBox and 64-bit guest systems

  I have been trying to install virtual systems on VMWare for a while now and encountered strange behaviour from my PC. The behaviour is as follows: On "automatic" virtualization mode it either outputs a cryptic error message (can MAYBE give later, if I can reproduce) right on startup (before even the BIOS) or it resets the complete HOST system (blackscreen, bios...) If I install a Windows XP on it it works well on "binary translation" mode. If I try installing Linux on it, in "binary translation" mode it crashes 1 or 2 seconds after I hit enter on the GRUB selection screen (after the first page of kernel messages rolled in) Using VirtualBox it crashes right in the BIOS. It gave me a Bluescreen though! 0x00000101: CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT: a clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allocated time interval NEWS: I tried VirtualBox again and it did not completely crash the computer this time. It gave me a critical error and a log file: http://pastebin.com/yKZSDs91 In conclusion, it will crash instantly if VT-x is activated. If not, it seemingly only crashed if I try to install something with 64 bits. Another update: Yes, it ONLY crashes when the guest is 64 bit! What I tried: Reinstalling Windows (my Windows installation was quite broken so it seemed natural. Didn't work though.) New BIOS What I am certain of: Virtualization extensions are activated in the BIOS What my computer specs are: ASUS P8P67 LE mainboard, newest BIOS/EFI firmware Intel Core i5 2500k Ati Radeon HD 5770 16 GB Corsair 1333mhz DDR3 RAM, 4 X 4 GB

• Why is my computer randomly restarting? How can I fix it?

  I have a custom built desktop computer that I've been using since about a year ago. The main specs are: ASUS P8Z68-V LE Motherboard Intel Core i7 2600k Corsair Vengeance 16GB Ram ASUS ENGTX570 GPU Corsair TX650M PSU I was running an overclock of 4.4ghz for my cpu (I have a Hyper212 EVO) and 1600mhz for my RAM but have it currently turned off due to my issues. I am also currently running Windows 8 but this problem occured in Windows 7 too. Basically my issue is that seemingly randomly, with no pattern my PC will reset itself and ASUS Anti-Surge will alert me that something went wrong. This issue is not related to system stress. I can run it fine for an hour maxxed out on Prime95 then later I can be watching a mere YouTube video when it will randomly reset. This has been occurring probably for the last two weeks and it seems to be getting worse. I believe this might be related to the power supply but when I monitor it in the bios and in Windows it appears to be putting out the proper voltages. Also possibly related or not but my Nvidia drivers frequently temporarily fail and then warn me of some kind of kernel error? If I have to buy a new power supply that is what I'll do but I want to make damn sure that's the only issue at hand. Thank you everyone in advance, please help me diagnose the issue and tell me what I can do to fix it. If you need any additional info about my setup please ask me.

• Installing a new Motherboard in a HP xw6200 case

  I have a HP xw6200 Workstation, that is rather long in the tooth, and with 2 physical CPUs, it is quite inefficient. So, the plan was to upgrade the internals. Nothing special: AMD Athlon II X4 640 ASUS M4A78KT-M LE (mATX) 2x 2GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM. 3p under my £150 budget The issues: The pin connector for the front panel isn't a good fit, but I can trim it to size. The PSU has a 8-Pin Power connector, unsurprisingly, the new board has a 4 pin socket. The pins do line up, but I would have to cut it in half to fit. Finally, due to the weight of heat-sinks, they are screwed directly into the case. It turns out that these screws also lock the motherboard in place. As to remove it, you remove the heat-sinks, slide the motherboard across and lift it out. I tested the new board for fit, and while it slots in fine, it's not secure. There is nowhere to screw the board down, it is just held in place with plastic standoffs. The only idea I had, was to wedging something between the side of the motherboard and part of the case. Any suggestions?

• New i7 is slower than old Core 2 Duo? Why? (BIOS programming)

  I've always wondered why the companies who make BIOS' either have terrible engineering psychologists or none at all. But without wasting your time further with random speculative questions, my real question is as follows: Why does my new computer run slower than my old computer? Old Computer: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU @ 3.0 Ghz (stock) 4GB OCZ DDR2 800 RAM Wolfdale E8400 mb nVidia GeForce 8600 GT New Computer: Intel Core i7 920 @ ~3.2 Ghz 6 GB OCZ DDR3 1066 RAM EVGA x58 SLI LE motherboard nVidia GeForce GTX 275 Vista x64 Home Premium on both. "Run slower" is defined as: - poorer FPS performance in the same games, applications - takes longer to start up - general desktop usage (checking email, opening up files, running exe's) is noticeably slower At first I thought I must've not set something up in the BIOS or something. But I have no idea how to set anything in the bios except for "Dummy O.C.", which brought me to ~3.2 Ghz. But beyond that I have no idea. I've been reading stuff about "ram timing" and voltages and the like but I really have no idea about that stuff. I'm a psychologist who has a basic understanding in building his own computers, not a computer scientist. Can someone give me some wisdom that might guide me to the reason my new computer is worse than my older one? I'm sorry if this is a bad question, or not appropriate to SO. • Parsing a JSON Response from a .Net webservice

  Just to get this out in the open I am new to JAVA, KSOAP, and JSON. So I'll try to explain this the best I can. A while ago I created a webservice to be consumed by Blackberry Apps that we're built using the plug in for Visual Studio. Now the project I am working on, I want to consume the same webservice for Android devices. For the most part I have the base code for the Android app done and working. Here's my problem: I can successfully call the webservice and get a response. I know from creating the webservice that it sends a JSON response. My problem is trying to parse through the JSON response. I have found a few examples that I have been suiting to my needs however I am hung up on one thing. • jQuery / jqGrids / Submitting form data troubles...

  Ive been messing with jqgrids alot of the last couple days, and I have nearly everything the way I want it from the display, tabs with different grids, etc. Im wanting to make use of Modal for adding and editing elements on my grid. My problem that Im running into is this. I have my editurl:"editsu.php" set, if that file is renamed, on edit, i get a 404 in the modal.. great! However, with that file in place, nothing at all seems to happen. I even put a die("testing"); line at the top, so it sees the file, it just doesnt do anything with it. • SQL Server 2005 Blocking Problem (ASYNC_NETWORK_IO)

  I am responsible for a third-party application (no access to source) running on IIS and SQL Server 2005 (500 concurrent users, 1TB data, 8 IIS servers). We have recently started to see significant blocking on the database (after months of running this application in production with no problems). This occurs at random intervals during the day, approximately every 30 minutes, and affects between 20 and 100 sessions each time. All of the sessions eventually hit the application time out and the sessions abort. The problem disappears and then gradually re-emerges. The SPID responsible for the blocking always has the following features: WAIT TYPE = ASYNC_NETWORK_IO The SQL being run is “(@claimid varchar(15))SELECT claimid, enrollid, status, orgclaimid, resubclaimid, primaryclaimid FROM claim WHERE primaryclaimid = @claimid AND primaryclaimid < claimid)”. This is relatively innocuous SQL that should only return one or two records, not a large dataset. NO OTHER SQL statements have been implicated in the blocking, only this SQL statement. This is parameterized SQL for which an execution plan is cached in sys.dm_exec_cached_plans. This SPID has an object-level S lock on the claim table, so all UPDATEs/INSERTs to the claim table are also blocked. HOST ID varies. Different web servers are responsible for the blocking sessions. E.g., sometimes we trace back to web server 1, sometimes web server 2. When we trace back to the web server implicated in the blocking, we see the following: There is always some sort of application related error in the Event Log on the web server, linked to the Host ID and Host Process ID from the SQL Session. The error messages vary, usually some sort of SystemOutofMemory. (These error messages seem to be similar to error messages that we have seen in the past without such dramatic consequences. We think was happening before, but didn’t lead to blocking. Why now?) No known problems with the network adapters on either the web servers or the SQL server. (In any event the record set returned by the offending query would be small.) Things ruled out: Indexes are regularly defragmented. Statistics regularly updated. Increased sample size of statistics on claim.primaryclaimid. Forced recompilation of the cached execution plan. Created a compound index with primaryclaimid, claimid. No networking problems. No known issues on the web server. No changes to application software on web servers. We hypothesize that the chain of events goes something like this: Web server process submits SQL above. SQL server executes the SQL, during which it acquires a lock on the claim table. Web server process gets an error and dies. SQL server session is hung waiting for the web server process to read the data set. SQL Server sessions that need to get X locks on parts of the claim table (anyone processing claims) are blocked by the lock on the claim table and remain blocked until they all hit the application time out. Any suggestions for troubleshooting while waiting for the vendor's assistance would be most welcome. Is there a way to force SQL Server to lock at the row/page level for this particular SQL statement only? Is there a way to set a threshold on ASYNC_NETWORK_IO waits only?

• How to improve performance of map that loads new overlay images

  I have inherited a website to maintain that uses a html map overlaying a real map to link specific countries to specific pages. previously it loaded the default map image, then with some javascript it would change the image src to an image with that particular country in a different colour on mouseover and reset the image source back to the original image on mouse out to make maintenance (adding new countries) easier i made the initial map a background image by utilising some CSS for the div tag, and then created new images for each country which only had that countries hightlight so that the images remain fairly small. this works great but theres one issue which is particularly noticeable on slower internet connections when you hover over a country if you dont have the image file in your browser cache or downloaded it wont load the image unless you hover over another country and then back onto the first country - i guess this is due to the image having to manually be downloaded on first hover. My question: is it possible to force the load of these extra images AFTER the page and all the other assets have finished loading so that this behaviour is all but eliminated? the html code for the MAP is as follows: <div class="gtmap"><img id="Image-Maps_6200909211657061" src="<?php echo cdnhttpsCheck(); • Landscape-only orientation + view controllers: What am I still missing?

  Hi. I can't believe I am still having problems with screen orientation, now on the iPad. This is an app that only supports one of the two landscape orientation. In my info.plist, I include: <string>UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight</string> <string>UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft</string> In Interface Builder, all my views are created in landscape orientation. Only the main Window is not, but I don't see a way to change that. When launched, I get the following coordinates for my main window and the main viewcontroller view: Window frame {{0, 0}, {768, 1024}} mainView frame {{0, 0}, {748, 1024}} (Changing the frame at runtime to be what I expect, does not change the odd behavior.) All other views after that show these coordinates when summoned (when loaded but before being presented): frame of keysig {{0, 0}, {1024, 768}} frame of instrumentSelect {{20, 0}, {1024, 768}} frame of settings {{0, 0}, {467, 300}} In all my viewControllers, i respond to shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation with: return ((interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft) || (interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight)); In my app, everything (almost) functions as expected. The app launches into one of the two landscape modes. The views (and viewcontrollers) display everything where it belongs, taps work all across the screen, as expected. However, there are two clues that something is still wrong. Clue #1: I have two viewcontrollers that are UITabeViewControllers. When summoned, they are supposed to open up their views and scroll to the selected row of the table. However it is evident that they scroll, but they don't scroll down far enough. It seems that they think that the screen extends further down and they scroll just enough to move the row to a place near the bottom of the screen, but that location is not visible. When the views are loaded, the coordinates are: frame of keysig {{0, 0}, {1024, 768}} frame of instrumentSelect {{20, 0}, {1024, 768}} When I present them using a popover, the frames get resized to: frame of keysig {{0, 0}, {320, 655}} frame of instrumentSelect {{0, 0}, {320, 655}} The frame of the viewController that does the presentation, same mainView frame mentioned above is: frame of self {{20, 0}, {748, 1024}} I have also tried to accomplish the same thing with presentModalViewController instead of presentPopover, and have the same results. This is what the popovers look like: In both cases, the selected row is below the horizon, even though the tableView did visibly scroll in order to make the row visible. I am not sure what to try next. I checked each UITable's scrollView content coordinates and they seemed reasonable. It almost seems like a UITable internal rect gets created with the wrong number and stays that way. Clue #2: All my actionsheets come up with a width of 320. I can only assume that the iPad allows actionSheets in only 320 or 480 widths and since it somehow thinks that the screen is oriented in portrait mode, and then uses the narrower width. There you have it. I can't believe I am still getting hung up on orientation issues. I swear Apple doesn't make it easy to have a landscape app. Any ideas?

Check out the post as it’s a great example of some foundational things every .NET programmer should know. In fact if you have ReSharper installed you’ll see a squiggly (technical term) in the imperative code that says “Hey Dude, I can convert this to LINQ if you want to be c00L!” (or something like that, it’s the 2010 geek version of Clippy). What about the fluent version? As Jon correctly pointed out in the comments, when you compare the IL for the LINQ code and the IL for the fluent code it’s the same. LINQ and the fluent interface are just syntactical sugar so you decide what you’re most comfortable with. At the end of the day they’re both the same. Now onto the numbers. Again I expected the imperative version to be better performing than the LINQ version (before I saw the IL that was generated). Call it womanly instinct. A gut feel. Whatever. Some of the numbers are interesting though. For Jesse’s example of 50 items, the numbers were interesting. The imperative sample clocked in at 7ms while the LINQ version completed in 4. As the number of items went up, the elapsed time didn’t necessarily climb exponentially. At 500 items they were pretty much the same and the results were similar up to about 50,000 items. After that I tried 500,000 items where the gap widened but not by much (2.2 seconds for imperative, 2.3 for LINQ). It wasn’t until I tried 5,000,000 items where things were noticeable. Imperative filled the list in 20 seconds while LINQ took 8 seconds longer (although personally I wouldn’t suggest you put 5 million items in a list unless you want your users showing up at your door with torches and pitchforks). Here’s the table with the full results. In fact if Windows Phone 7 detects you’re taking more than 10 seconds to do any one thing, it considers the app hung and shuts it down. The results here are for Windows Phone 7 but frankly they're the same for desktop and web apps so feel free to apply it generally. From a programming perspective, choose what you like. Some LINQ statements can get pretty hairy so I usually fall back with my simple mind and write it imperatively. If you really want to impress your friends, write it old school then let ReSharper do the hard work for! Happy programming!

• La búsqueda de la eficiencia como Santo Grial de las TIC sanitarias

  Las XVIII Jornadas de Informática Sanitaria en Andalucía se han cerrado el pasado viernes con 11.500 horas de inteligencia colectiva. Aunque el cálculo supongo que resulta de multiplicar las horas de sesiones y talleres por el número de inscritos, lo que no sería del todo real ya que la asistencia media calculo que andaría por las noventa personas, supongo que refleja el global si incluimos el montante de interacciones informales que el formato y lugar de celebración favorecen. Mi resumen subjetivo es que todos somos conscientes de que debemos conseguir más eficiencia en y gracias a las TIC y que para ello hemos señalado algunas pautas, que los asistentes, en sus diferentes roles debiéramos aplicar y ayudar a difundir. En esa línea creo que destaca la necesidad de tener muy claro de dónde se parte y qué se quiere conseguir, para lo que es imprescindible medir y que las medidas ayuden a retroalimentar al sistema en orden de conseguir sus objetivos. Y en este sentido, a nivel anecdótico, quisiera dejar una paradoja que se presentó sobre la eficiencia: partiendo de que el coste/día de hospitalización es mayor al principio que los últimos días de la estancia, si se consigue ser más eficiente y reducir la estancia media, se liberarán últimos días de estancia que se utilizarán para nuevos ingresos, lo que hará que el número de primeros días de estancia aumente el coste económico total. En este caso mejoraríamos el servicio a los ciudadanos pero aumentaríamos el coste, salvo que se tomasen acciones para redimensionar la oferta hospitalaria bajando el coste y sin mejorer la calidad. También fue tema destacado la posibilidad/necesidad de aprovechar las capacidades de las TIC para realizar cambios estructurales y hacer que la medicina pase de ser reactiva a proactiva mediante alarmas que facilitasen que se actuase antes de ocurra el problema grave. Otro tema que se trató fue la necesidad real de corresponsabilizar de verdad al ciudadano, gracias a las enormes posibilidades a bajo coste que ofrecen las TIC, asumiendo un proceso hacia la salud colaborativa que tiene muchos retos por delante pero también muchas más oportunidades. Y la carpeta del ciudadano, emergente en varios proyectos e ideas, es un paso en ese aspecto. Un tema que levantó pasiones fue cuando la Directora Gerente del Sergas se quejó de que los proyectos TIC eran lentísimos. Desgraciadamente su agenda no le permitió quedarse al debate que fue bastante intenso en el que salieron temas como el larguísimo proceso administrativo, las especificaciones cambiantes, los diseños a medida, etc como factores más allá de la eficiencia especifica de los profesionales TIC involucrados en los proyectos. Y por último quiero citar un tema muy interesante en línea con lo hablado en las jornadas sobre la necesidad de medir: el Índice SEIS. La idea es definir una serie de criterios agrupados en grandes líneas y con un desglose fino que monitorice la aportación de las TIC en la mejora de la salud y la sanidad. Nos presentaron unas versiones previas con debate aún abierto entre dos grandes enfoques, partiendo desde los grandes objetivos hasta los procesos o partiendo desde los procesos hasta los objetivos. La discusión no es sólo académica, ya que influye en los parámetros a establecer. La buena noticia es que está bastante avanzado el trabajo y que pronto los servicios de salud podrán tener una herramienta de comparación basada en la realidad nacional. Para los interesados, varios asistentes hemos ido tuiteando las jornadas, por lo que el que quiera conocer un poco más detalles puede ir a Twitter y buscar la etiqueta #jisa18 y empezando del más antiguo al más moderno se puede hacer un seguimiento con puntos de vista subjetivos sobre lo allí ocurrido. No puedo dejar de hacer un par de autocríticas, ya que soy miembro de la SEIS. La primera es sobre el portal de la SEIS que no ha tenido la interactividad que unas jornadas como estas necesitaban. Pronto empezará a tener documentos y análisis de lo allí ocurrido y luego vendrán las crónicas y análisis más cocinados en la revista I+S. Pero en la segunda década del siglo XXI se necesita bastante más. La otra es sobre la no deseada poca presencia de usuarios de las TIC sanitarias en los roles de profesionales sanitarios y ciudadanos usuarios de los sistemas de información sanitarios. Tenemos que ser proactivos para que acudan en número significativo, ya que si no estamos en riesgo de ser unos TIC-sanitarios absolutistas: todo para los usuarios pero sin los usuarios. Tweet

• SOLVED Install MythTV & 11.10 on Lenovo S12 (Intel atom) with wireless

  This is how I installed Ubuntu 11.10 and MythTV client on my Lenovo S12 (Intel Atom) laptop and use it using WiFi (see additional notes at end). I did this because the upgrade from 11.04 bricked the laptop. Note that the partitions on the Lenovo standard disk were already in place for this installation. Also note that my LAN is setup for fixed IP addresses. Downloaded and burned 11.10 x86 Desktop Ubuntu CD Connected the power supply cord, LAN wire and the external DVD USB drive. Ran Windows XP and made sure performance level "Performance" was set and "Wireless" was enabled. Booted S12 from CD Disabled Networking from icon on upper left panel icon Edited Connections… "Wired connection 1" ? Set IP address, accepted default netmask and set gateway. Also set DNS server. Good idea to check "Connection Information" here to verify everything's O.K. Selected Install Ubuntu from the initial "Install" window Verified the three items were checked (required disk space available, plugged into a power source, & connected to the Internet) Selected Download updates while installing and third party software. Hit Continue… At wireless selected don't want to connect…WiFi…now. Continue… At Installation type, selected Something else. Continue… At partition tale, selected the ext4 Linux partition, set the mount point as "/", and marked for formatting. Here I selected the main disk (/sda) for installing the boot manager. Continue… Selected or verified my Time zone. Continue… Selected my keyboard layout. Continue… Filled in the who are you fields. Make sure password is required to sign in is checked. Continue… Chose a picture. Continue… I selected import no accounts. Continue… Wait as the Install creeps along. If your screen goes blank, tap the space bar ? apparently the screen saver/power plan does this. There are several progress bars. The longest was "Installing system", and it was the next to the last one. Installation Complete window appears, Restart Now… Wait as it stops, The screen blanks then the message "…remove…media…close tray…press enter" I just unplugged the USB DVD and hit enter… It was disheartening but the screen turned Ubuntu Purple-beige and nothing happened, so I help down the power key until it shut down, the pressed it again and the Grub Boot screen appeared. Select Ubuntu… 25.The screen went blank with the little flashing underscore cursor on it and the disk light would occasionally flash. I hit the enter key and eventuality Ubuntu started. After a somewhat long time the unity desktop appeared. 11.10, unlike earlier versions, retains the connection information. Check this by checking the network icon on the upper left applet panel. Here the touch-pad·mouse quit working and I had to reboot. It takes and extremely long time to boot, sometimes requiring several power off/ power on (cold boot). You can try to get the default network manager to work, but it might not, it didn't on mine for WiFi. Thanks to: Chris at URL here's what to do… disconnect your wired Internet connection. input your wireless information into network manager open a terminal (unity dash, top of icon totem, open, and make sure the ruler&pen icon on the bottom is selected, 2nd from left) type in "terminal". Might be a good idea to drag and drop the terminal icon to the terminal, it's easy to get rid of later. click to open a terminal, and type in: sudo rmmod acer_wmi && echo "blacklist acer_wmi" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and hit enter. type in your password as asked. if you have correctly entered your WiFi information and you are near your AP, you should connect immediately if not, see the URL above ? you might need to replace "network manager" with "wicd" ? I did with 11.04. Update the new 11.10, in the upper left panel applet weird·gear icon is menu with a line about updating. It's the new way to invoke Update Manager. Your lenovo S12 (intel atom) should now run the new unity Ubuntu. Point your elbow at the ceiling and pat yourself on the back. Installing Mythbuntu Client 24.1 Open mythbuntu.org/repos (I urge you not to directly use Ubuntu Software Center for this) Install Mythbuntu Repos Save the file (in ~/Downloads, the default) Run the file ? it will update your repositories so that you will get the proper installation sources ? it will start Ubuntu Software Center to do this ? Click Install… You will need your password. Debconf window will open, select by making sure check mark is in the little box "Would you like to activate…". Forward… Which version? At the time of writing the current "Stable" version was 24.1, select 0.24.x… Forward… Read the message, then forward… Delete the downloaded file. Install synaptic (unity dash, top of icon totem, open, and make sure the ruler&pen icon on the bottom is selected, 2nd from left) type in "synaptic". Click on the synaptic icon. Ubuntu Software Center will open and allow you to install synaptic package manager. Open Synaptic (unity dash, top of icon totem, open, and make sure the ruler&pen icon on the bottom is selected, 2nd from left) type in "Synaptic". Might be a good idea to drag and drop the terminal icon to the terminal, it's easy to get rid of later. Run synaptic, read the intro, and close the intro window. Type in mythbuntu-control-centre in the Quick filter text box, and then select it "Mark for installation" by clicking on the box next to it's name. Marvel at the additional to be installed items, then select "?Mark"… At the top of the synaptic window click on the "? Apply" button. Marvel at the amount of stuff to be installed, the click on "Apply". When finished, close finished window and synaptic. Open mythbuntu-control-centre (unity dash, top of icon totem, open, and make sure the ruler&pen icon on the bottom is selected, 2nd from left) type in "mythbuntu". Might be a good idea to drag and drop the mythbuntu-control-centre icon to the terminal, it's easy to get rid of later. You can now configure and install the frontend. Go down the icon totem on the right side of the window and click as needed… System roles. ? No Backend, Desktop Frontend, and Ubuntu Desktop. Apply… & Apply changes… & Password… MySQL Configuration ? from backend ? Setup General Alt-N(ext) Alt-N(ext) Stetting Access Setup PIN code: ~~~~ Input Security key and click "Test Connection", if ?, then Apply… & Apply… {note: for some inexplicable reason, control centre hung on this, but when I restarted it, it was set properly} Graphics drivers, When I did this, only the Broadcom wireless driver showed up. I closed without doing anything. Services. I enabled SSH & Samba. Apply… & Apply… Repositories. Asked & Answered. MythExport. Pass, I believe it requires backend on the same system. Proprietary Codec Support. Check to enable, Apply… & Apply… System Updates. No action necessary, will be a part of the Ubuntu update mechanism. Themes and Artwork. For themes, I selected Enable/Update all. Apply… & Apply… Infrared & Startup behavior and Plugins. Defer until you know more. Close software centre. Advanced Basic rate: All Advanced CTS Protection Mode: Off Advanced Frame Burst: Enable Advanced Max associate clients: 4 for client link 2, 1 for client-server link 1 Advanced AP isolation: Enable Advanced Preamble: Short Advanced Afterburner: On Advanced Wireless GUI access: Off Advanced WMM support: Off Other settings: default for supplied firmware. Why I suspect this worked? The 54GL Access Points's with the firmware's setting are set to handle a multiple client, wide area situation. With these mods I reconfigured them for a small area, few client situation, disabling Advanced WMM probably the most important. In addition, the client mythtv when used all other users of its access point are turned off except for a Skype phone. Also, the client-server is set up to allow other connections though it's LAN connection, and these are used to connect the TV and disc players, not used when client is being used.

  Hi I'm aware of the existence of similar threads on this forum. But any of replies mach to my problem. I'm using Ubuntu 10.4 and I hadn't problems with fonts till I've decided to use XeLaTeX instead of LaTeX (cf http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/12347/typesetting-a-document-using-arabic-script/12358#12358). The problem is that I'm not able to compile any .tex document using XeLaTeX, as well as properly display XeLaTeX documentation. As I've learn thanks to mentioned thread, XeLaTeX uses the fonts availables in general in the system. I was trying yo read fontspec documentation, but it opens in pdf with a lot of white gaps and terminal output (quite long) consist mostly of errors.
