• Why should I use a web framework's template language over python's templating options?

  I'm coming from a python CGI background and was wanting to move into something more contemporary and think I have decided upon web.py as the framework I would like to use. In regards to templating, previously I used formatted strings and the string.Template module to effect most of my templating needs. After reading through a few of the templating options I have heard mentioned, I began wondering what the main benefits of using something like the Django or jinja templating options over "native" Python templating options were? Am I just going to be replacing $tmpl_var with {{ tmpl_var }} and s.substitute(tmpl_var=value) with t.render(s), i.e., alternate syntax? or will I gain additional advantages from using these templating systems?

• Copying first 1000 PDF files having single, double quotes in their name to another folder

  I am having this folder with PDFs into it and I need to process 1000 at a time. So I need to move them into another folder, process them and delete them. For this I tried using $ find . -maxdepth 1 -type f |head -1000|xargs cp -t $destdir It gives error on single and double quotes in filename. There are thousands of files and I have no idea how many of them has these quotes in them. Can anyone help me find a solution? And I tried with the -0 option, it did not work

• screen saver issue

  When i leave my pc alone for while the screens turns black which is fine, when i return and move my mouse it comes back on but my second screen stays black and my first screen has a blue overlay over the top of the unlock screen. I believe this is to do with my dual screens on gts450. screen 1 is 1920*1080 screen 2 is 1024*768 the blue over lay is on screen one and looks to be the size of screen 2 I can out the password in and press enter and then everything goes back to normal, but how do i fix this issue of a blue overlay stopping me seeing whats on screen.

• Best book/source to learn the unix commands

  So I was intern at this company wherein they'd use just putty. Now I've never worked with unix commands, apart from the basic , compile code , run C code. But now I would love to know all the things about the unix. Starting off with the commands, from the most basic of all to the decent level. Also, moving forward, how the different folders/files are arranged in a unix (ubuntu is installed on my system) system. I have picked up a couple of books, but they dont seem to help. Can someone suggest a comprehensive book that'll fulfill my needs. Because, working with a GUI on ubuntu does not really give me the real feel of things. Hence I'd want to move on to the terminal instead. Thanks.

  This is my first question here. I am looking for a form builder solution that will allow rapid form development even by beginners, without needing much knowledge of programming. I prefer a solution that we can install on our servers. I have 3 products shortlisted for further review: MachForm, RackForms(formerly FormBoss) and Form Tools If anyone has used any of these products, I would appreciate your input on your experience with using these products and your recommendations. Does anyone know of other products that I must be sure to include in my review? We will eventually move over hundreds of forms to the chosen solution and I would like to make sure as much as I can that it will still be a viable solution in the coming years. • Browser game in JSP? [closed]

  I want to develop a browser-game (like ogame, travian) and I have some doubts in which technologies should I use. I was thinking in a server-side in JSP,Java and a client-side in HTML (or HTML5 if I learn to give it good use). Do you think my choices are right? I would like to make a board where many players could move simultaneously between tiles or squares. Do you think is possible in JSP or I should start with other language? • 1 year to learn as much as possile - How would you plan this time?

  I have been messing around with web development and programming in general for a couple of years now, working in web development agencies and the like. I have now decided that I want to move to more general programming and do this permanently and as a career and have set myself a goal of 1 year to learn as much as I can before I go out and find a 'proper' job as a programmer. Do any programmers out there have any opinions on how this time should be split and what the most important things to focus on will be over the year. The languages I will be focusing my learning on are: c, php, python and go - all of which i have varying degrees of familiarity with. The ultimate goal here is to gain as good as foundation as possible and to be of a good enough level to interview successfully for a decent company.

• Not your typical Permission Denied Question

  I recently reinstalled Ubuntu 11.10 (64 Bit) on my computer. (My hard drive took a powder) Before, I could "mv" files around with the command. Now when I try I get the permission denied message. I also get the message about "man sudo" when I open my terminal. I am pretty sure I did not get that before. Can I add a user/administrator and change something in my orginal admin that I cannot change myself? I am getting really frustrated with this. I do not recall having the same problem before. I tried qksudo nautilus and it appears to run then it sits there with the cursor blinking but does not move.

  I have two sites: www.example.de www.main.com www.main.com is English version of www.example.de which is in German. I want to keep only www.main.com. For the English version I will keep www.main.com, but for German I want to move it to www.main.com/de. I am wondering what would be best solution for old www.example.de: Redirect everything from www.example.de to www.main.com/de using 301 redirect? Redirect everything from www.example.de towww.main.com/de/page-url-of-old-size.html? So each link actually get own address. Is that necessary or will Google realize where the page belongs on new site even if I redirect everything to home page? Any other solution, maybe just set in Google webmaster tools the new domain or anything like that?

• How to find 2D grid cells swept by a moving circle?

  I'm making a game based on a 2D grid, with some cells passable and some not. Dynamic objects can move continuously, independent of the grid, but need to collide with impassable cells. I wrote an algorithm to trace a ray against the grid, that gives me all cells that ray intersects. However, actual object are not point-sized; I'm currently representing them as circles. But I can't figure out an effective algorithm to trace a moving circle. Here's a picture of what I need: The numbers show in what order the circle collides with grid cells. Does anybody know the algorithm to find these collisions? Preferably in C#. Update The circle can be bigger than a single grid cell.

• Ubuntu freezing after boot

  I have ubuntu 12.04 LTS dual booting with windows 7 on my laptop without any problems and felt like doing the same on my desktop. However now that I have installed Ubuntu on the desktop through Wubi, if I boot into ubuntu the log in screen is as far as I get. I see my username and the password box but everything is completely unresponsive. I can move the mouse around the screen fine I just can't click on anything and the keyboard doesn't seem to work at all as I've tried a few shortcuts and there's no response at all. I have done a some searches and I think it's a driver issue but I don't know how to fix them as I'm pretty new to ubuntu and cannot log in at all. Desktop specs if needed: Intel core i7 2700k, NVidia GTX 580, 8GB RAM. Thanks in advance

• Does having a higher paid technical job mean you do not get to code any more?

  I work at a large company where technical people fall roughly in one of these categories: A developer on a scrum team who develops for a single product and maybe works with other teams that are closely related to the product. An architect who is more of a consultant on multiple teams (5-6) and tries to recognize commonalities between team efforts that could be abstracted into libraries (architects do not write the library code, however). This architect also attends many meetings with management and attempts to set technical direction. In my company the architect role is where most technical people move into as the next step in their career. My questions are: Do most companies work such a way that their highest paid technical people are far removed from writing code? Is this a natural tendency for a developer's career? Can a developer have it all (code AND set direction?)

  I'm using the following code to move a UIImageView: shootImg.image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"Projectile Left 1.png"]; [UIView beginAnimations:nil context:nil]; shootImg.center = CGPointMake(shootImg.center.x+1000, shootImg.center.y); [UIView commitAnimations]; This works but what I want to do is after [UIView CommitAnimations]; I want to set the location of shootImg using CGPointMake. If I just put it after commitAnimations then the animation doesn't fully complete. Any suggestions? I'm not using any frameworks like cocos2d and if you need to see any more code just ask.

  I am facing a problem and it is in Ubuntu (14.04) permanent scroll bar is not there but it appears when you move the mouse pointer to right most side or bottom most side. But it is very difficult to use and lately it takes too much to appear and sometimes it doesn't appear at all and so i have to close the application and reopen it. So i want to ask how to enable permanent scroll bars on right side and bottom most side. I am sure many people must have faced this problem before me. Thanks. • Client Side Prediction

  I have a question regarding Client Side prediction. Ive tried to search topics about my specific problem but couldn't find anything which really answered my problem. Most tutorials and explanations assume that the Client sends messages like "Move my player up by 1 Position", but what if i send messages like "Set my player's velocity to x"? Since it's hard to explain with text, i made a graphic explaining my problem. The main problem is, that the player sets his own velocity, due to Client Side Prediction, earlier than the Server. • laptop screen goes blank after waking from sleep

  I have been facing this issue from the last week after some update. Whenever my laptop wakes up from suspend state it just shows me a blank screen. Regardless of whatever I do(move my mouse, press keyboard buttons) it just refuses to wake up. I am forced to do a restart and lose all my unsaved files. Has this issue been reported for Ubuntu 12.04? I am using a Lenovo X200 with Intel Mobile 4 Series Graphics Chipset. Please let me know if any body has found a fix for this.

• More than 2gb of Music without paid plan possible?

  Hi there, I do not have a paid plan for UbuntuOne and do not intend of buying one, but I do like to buy music from the UbuntuOne Music Store. Is it possible to buy music, once I bought more than 2gb or would I have to move the music out of the UbuntuOne share? In this case, I would suggest to put the music in the official ubuntuone-folder instead of a hidden one. Non-technical users will not understand, why their shared music files are not in this folder, but others are popping up there (e.g. in the webinterface). Best Regards, Lars

• Setting up fastcgi on an Ubunutu server (socket file permissions issue)

  I am trying to set up mod_fcgid on my server. Part of the requirement is that Apache needs to create a socket file for mod_fcgid. I specified the folder for Apache to write the socket data to: /var/run/apache2/fcgid I then specified this file in my fcgid.conf file as follows: SocketPath /var/run/apache2/fcgid/sock I then changed the owner of the folder to www-data (the apache user) and gave the owner full permissions to the folder and its contents. I was able to run my test fcgi app then. When I rebooted the machine, y fastcgi app no longer worked. After some investigation, I found that ownership of /var/run/apache2/fcgid has been reset to root, and with permission reset to 700 I have the following questions: Is there something specific about the /var/run folder? why is the permissions being reset after a reboot? Should I move my socket file to another location (in case root automatically takes ownership of contents in this folder for security reasons?) I am running Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS 64 bit

• Creating an OpenGL FPS camera: I have the position and orientation vectors, now what?

  I have been struggling to create a first person camera in OpenGL ES 2.0 without using gluLookAt(). I grab the camera's orientation vectors (the way it's looking) from the current modelview matrix, and use that to calculate the new forward/backward (Z) translation value. I then calculate the strafe (X) value from the dot product of Z and Y (which is always 1.0). So, I have all the information I need to create a view matrix, but how do I do that without using gluLookAt? Almost all the examples I've seen use gluLookAt, but no such function exists in OpenGL ES 2.0. Besides, one of the moderators on cprogramming.com mentioned that gluLookAt is not appropriate for FPS cameras: http://cboard.cprogramming.com/game-programming/135390-how-properly-move-strafe-yaw-pitch-camera-opengl-glut-using-glulookat.html I am really confused by all the conflicting information I'm getting. • What is the most cross-browser/system compatible option for 3d graphics on a web page?

  I would like to develop a bit of functionality for a web site that involves a bit of 3D - the user can move around objects, rotate them and texture them. So far I've looked into: WebGL (in particular three.js) and it looks great, but it's not supported in IE nor IOS. IOS supports the <canvas> tag, but only 2d. It looks like three.js has an unsupported hack to make a 3d thing use the 2d canvas instead without textures, but this looks like a hack. I also considered resorting to Flash which works on most browsers, but that won't work on IOS. What's my best option for doing 3d web graphics on the vast array of browsers and interfaces? At the moment I'm thinking WebGL for web (and ask people to use chrome or firefox, and take the hit on IE) and then maybe write a native app for IOS, but I am not sure if there are better alternatives available that I don't know of.
