• Suppressing the language select button iPhone

  I'm working on an application now that contains an account register section. One field with secureTextEntry = NO (for registering only). The idea is this make registration faster and hopefully increases the number of signups. It's simple enough for me to just place a regular UITextField but if the user has any additional language keyboards then it's possible for the user to enter non-password friendly characters. Unlike in when secureTextEntry = YES. I know I can do textField.keyboardType = UIKeyboardTypeASCIICapable to get the text field to display the ASCII keyboard first, but the user will still have the keyboard switch button which will allow them to get to undesirable characters. Is there a simple method for suppressing the international button or forcing ASCII only keyboard with no international button? [EDIT] Another perhaps better option might be to suppress multi byte keyboards or even to display the text in the case that secureTextEntry = YES any ideas here? [EDIT AGAIN] I've decided it's a really bad idea to suppress the international button as non-multibyte characters should all be allowed.

  Hi I am having a problem debugging an issue on a website. Everything works locally, the local and server databases are the same The strange thing about the error is that it points to my local dev machine in the error stack. • Any form autofill for 'Developers'?

  Hi all, I have looked at some autofills for Firefox. But they are not designed with the developers' needs in mind. General internet surfers will need a tool to fill in many different forms with constant values for each form. Developers need exactly the opposite, when you want to test a part of your app you'll need to fill a single (or a couple of) forms many times with different (but valid and sensible) data. So, does such a thing exist? An autofill to fill form inputs based on perhaps a class name (email, password, address, url, ...)? I strongly feel if it doesn't exist someone should roll up their sleeves and make one! I for one will put in my share if some others want to team up. But right now, I am desperately in need of one if it exists

  Douglas Crockford describes the consequence of Javascript inquiring a node's style. How simply asking for the margin of a div causes the browser to 'reflow' the div in the browser's rendering engine four times. So that made me wonder, during the initial rendering of a page (or in Crockford's jargon a "web scroll") is it faster to write CSS that defines only the non-zero/non-default values? To provide an example: div{ margin-left:2px; } Than div{ margin:0 0 0 2px; } I know consequence of this 'savings' is insignificant, but I think it is still important to understand how the technologies are implemented. The virutal column does not exist in my table , but I want to get the value from the drop down ,when user saves the data. for example, product_price is a virtual column , which doesn't exist in my database table. But I would like to have a dropdown, with product price to be displayed from another table. And when user selects the product_price, the selected product_price should be gettable in an object as self.product_price.   I need to localiza a in development app for English & Spanish. Despite the fact I follow the Apple way of use NSLocalizedString & create nibs for both, I already lost the track of the new string that need to get localized and found with surprise that I need to redo the nibs in spanish when I change the master. I know the use of gettext & poedit and wonder if something like that can be used. Or if exist some script or tool for this.

• Google App Engine with local Django 1.1 gets Intermittent Failures

  I'm using the Windows Launcher development environment for Google App Engine. I have downloaded Django 1.1.2 source, and un-tarrred the "django" subdirectory to live within my application directory (a peer of app.yaml) At the top of each .py source file, I do this: import settings import os os.environ["DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE"] = 'settings' In my file settings.py (which lives at the root of the app directory, as well), I do this: DEBUG = True TEMPLATE_DIRS = ('html') INSTALLED_APPS = ('filters') import os os.environ["DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE"] = 'settings' from google.appengine.dist import use_library use_library('django', '1.1') from django.template import loader Yes, this looks a bit like overkill, doesn't it? I only use django.template. I don't explicitly use any other part of django. However, intermittently I get one of two errors: 1) Django complains that DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE is not defined. 2) Django complains that common.html (a template I'm extending in other templates) doesn't exist. 95% of the time, these errors are not encountered, and they randomly just start happening. Once in that state, the local server seems "wedged" and re-booting it generally fixes it. What's causing this to happen, and what can I do about it? How can I even debug it? • Linux standard input issue

  Hello everyone, I am new to Linux. And I am using Red Hat Enterprise Version 5. There is a ruby program which use standard input as its input (e.g. the Ruby program process input from standard input). I think standard input should be keyboard, correct? So, I think other kinds of input (non-standard input) should not work (i.e. the ruby program should not be able to read input from such non-standard input), but actually I have tried using pipe works, I am so confused because I think pipe should be some other kinds of input -- other than standard input, why it could work? i.e. put text "123" in abc.txt with pipe, could achieve the same result as using keyboard as input to type "123" for the ruby program. • SQL Server 2008 BULK INSERT causes more reads than writes. Why?

  I've huge a table (a few billion rows) with a clustered index and two non-clustered indices. A BULK INSERT operation produces 112000 reads and only 383 writes (duration 19948ms). It's very confusing to me. Why do reads exceed writes?   What is the technically correct way of referring to "high ascii" or "extended ascii" characters? I don't just mean the range of 128-255, but any character beyond the 0-127 scope. Often they're called diacritics, accented letters, sometimes casually referred to as "national" or non-English characters, but these names are either imprecise or they cover only a subset of the possible characters. What correct, precise term that will programmers immediately recognize? And what would be the best English term to use when speaking to a non-technical audience?

  I'm about to embark on a project that will need to: Process XML Heavy text parsing of non-xml documents Insertion of data from xml and non-xml documents into a relational DB. Present processed data to user from db using webpages. The website will be subject to short periods of very heavy loads to pages (300+ visitors a minute for several minutes), but most of the time will be idle (a dozen or so visitors a minute). The ability to cache or scale to load will be very nice. I have a very strong background in Java and web services, but I do not want to use Java for this project as I'd like to diversify my skill set. Which language would you recommend and what are some pros and cons that you might recognize from your own experiences?

  Hi, I'm looking to to build a wiki based tool the helps/aides in the requirements engineering process. More specifically I am hoping to end up with a tool that helps inexperienced users easily create and design requirements documents on a wiki platform. I was wondering if there exist any wiki/wiki platforms that either already exist or are easily extendible or would be worth looking at that for this purpose. For instance some of the features I was hoping to add would be to add structure to a document so that information is filled out in a standardised manner. Another idea I was looking at was to somehow create relationships between different types of documents (for example- a goal diagram gets evolves/ helps in the development of the class diagram). So far I have come across FOSwiki which claims to to fully customisalble...but I'm not sure what it means and what I can really do with that. Any input on FOSwiki is also highly appreciated.

  I have a web site and i am showing videos to visitors, at the admin side i am filling the form of video and upload video file and sometimes i need to change(update) the video so i update the video by uploading another one, when i create the video in the first time i concatenate a datetime variable with the video name to avoid repeatition(file already exist) and when updatting the video the problem appears.... as if i upload the new video with the previous name so it will replace the previous one and in this case if the video is used by another process it will fail and the second option(which i am already using) is to upload a new video and concatenating new datetime variable with video title, so the previous and the new video will exist in the same directory and in this case i will lose too much space in my server directory as i have unused videos which takes space which in future will cause problem to me in the disk space so how can i solve this problem ? • Cant set drop down list selected value in page load

  Hi, I'm trying to set the selected value of a ddl during page load ie. before databind. This causes "selected value does not exist" errors. So I force a databind, and add a new element if it does not exist in the data source. However it looks like when the databind is performed later in the page lifecycle that my added element(s) are removed/overwritten. Am I setting the values in the wrong part of the life cycle? what I'm doing seems rather hackish and I think im going about this the wrong way... is there a better way to do this?

• NSFormatter problem: not getting called for the empty string

  I have created a custom formatter for my (read-only) table column. The corresponding objects are just strings, so it's an string-to-string formatter. All non-empty string objects are returned with @"++" appended to them. Empty string objects should be turned into the @"EMPTY" string. The @"++" gets appended to non-empty strings just fine. The problem is, @"EMPTY" never gets shown! My formatter is never called by Cocoa when the underlying object is the empty string. The corresponding row just keeps being empty, instead of showing my requested @"EMPTY". Any ideas?

• How should the Version field be used in Trac?

  I use Trac to track bugs, and future changes in my software projects. Tickets in Trac have a "Version" field and I'm trying to figure out the best way to use this field. Say I find a series of bugs in version 1.0 of my software. I create tickets in track for each and assign them to version 1.0. Now say I fix some of the bugs, and add some of the new features and release version 1.1. But some of the old 1.0 bugs are still in 1.1. Should I change their corresponding tickets to version 1.1 because they also now exist in 1.1? Or should I leave them set to version 1.0 as a way of tracking what version the bug was found in, and just assume that any open tickets in older versions still exist in newer versions?

• Create a Stream without having a physical file to create from.

  I'm needing to create a zip file containing documents that exist on the server. I am using the .Net Package class to do so, and to create a new Package (which is the zip file) I have to have either a path to a physical file or a stream. I am trying to not create an actual file that would be the zip file, instead just create a stream that would exist in memory or something. My question is how do you instantiate a new Stream (i.e. FileStream, MemoryStream, etc) without having a physical file to instantiate from.
