• How to use only intel graphics and power off radeon?

  I've been using Linux for quite a while in everyday computing and programming. But now i got this new laptop with amazing battery life on windows which runs pretty cool even while gaming. But for some reason on Ubuntu I get like 1/3 battery life and it gets hot even while browsing the web. I have the proprietary drivers for radeon, but I'm thinking about upgrading from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04, and I would like to know how can I use only the Intel graphics and have radeon always turned off? Since I do not need the discrete graphics on Ubuntu and I'm pretty sure my problem is related to the radeon sucking up my battery and generating heat. My laptop technical specifications are: Dell latitude 3540 Intel core i7 4500U (with Intel hd4400 graphics ) Ati Radeon HD 8850m with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM 8 GB DDR3L @1600mhz Toshiba 256gb SSD Ubuntu 12.4.3 If you need any additional info, please tell me :)

When I asked the HR for reason, he contacted the technical interviewer and told me that I was syntactically wrong while coding. I used Google Guava for coding. So my code looked like this: List<String> items = Lists.newArrayList() instead of List<String> items =new ArrayList<String>(); I know that the code will compile and work as expected.Is it ok to use third party libraries like Google Guava in interviews?

• How to enable home directory encryption for a particular user?

  I prefer to have a dedicated "administrator" user for technical purposes and that was one I've set up during installation. I've also refused to encrypt the home folder of the user. Now, as I've added a user account for my actual work usage I want my (but not the "administrator") home folder to be encrypted. How to turn this on? If it is not possible then how to enable encryption for all users home directories on a system already installed? I've found questions and answers about how to disable it but am not sure how to enable it.

• Is there ongoing work in the kernel team to improve battery life under linux?

  I have read in some forums that the kernel team is working on improving battery life and energy efficiency in linux. Unfortunately our community really lags behind windows and mac in that regard. I would like to read about the reasons why this difference exists with other platforms. Is it purely due to closed hardware specs from vendors or does it has to be with kernel design issues? Apple devices with unix cores have amazing battery times, but they also design their own hardware...just want to understand this issues in a less technical way I know that recent kernel updates in Ubuntu have improved the battery life in most computers, but I was wondering if there is still development going on and where can I read more about it. • ubuntu 14.04 slow

I have signed up at zymic for a free hosting (MySql included). • More than 2gb of Music without paid plan possible?

  Hi there, I do not have a paid plan for UbuntuOne and do not intend of buying one, but I do like to buy music from the UbuntuOne Music Store. Is it possible to buy music, once I bought more than 2gb or would I have to move the music out of the UbuntuOne share? In this case, I would suggest to put the music in the official ubuntuone-folder instead of a hidden one. Non-technical users will not understand, why their shared music files are not in this folder, but others are popping up there (e.g. in the webinterface). Best Regards, Lars

• Amnesic Environment

  My team is looking for a technical term which may or may not exist. We are trying to describe an environment, such as a database, which has been built up over time with little or documentation about the change process that has gone into it. Generally these are legacy systems who's original developers have long since moved on and they are in such a tangled and unmanageable state that the only way to recreate the environment, say for testing purposes, is to copy it and do your best guess at re-configuring it for its new purpose. So far the best term we have come up with is Amnesic, such as "setting up the new test environment is going to be a challenge because it is an amnesic db." However, we are still not quite happy with the term and were wondering if a better and/or more accepted term for this situation exists.

• What is the Ubuntu equivalent of the Windows programs Belarc or PC Wizard?

  I provide technical support for several high schools in Spain and I have been building up a inventory of the schools machines. On the windows only computers I normally run PC Wizard to quickly get a good overview of the machines hardware, software and network settings. Is there an equivalent tool preferable with a GUI and an export option to html or pdf in Ubuntu. I have tried a few options such as: Gnomes gconf-editor hardinfo (GUI) lshw (CLI) I'm just looking for an all in one application that builds a detailed profile of the installed software, hardware and network setting of a particular machine. I have found Sysinfo which is quite good, it displays the most important hardware info and allows you to save it to a text file with a neat GUI. I'm still looking for a more complete solution but it's a good start.

• How do I forward/redirect a website from a folder in a subdomain to another server?

  I have a client with a site at: subdomain.theirdomain.com/folder It's a 50Gb gallery site that i've now cloned and have locally in MAMP. Once i've made some changes to it I need to host it at alternative physical server/hosting (I intend using a dedicated server I have access to with a technical domain name currently). However, the client would ideally like to keep the existing URL as it has been used extensively in marketing. I've done HTTP redirects and forwards and 301 redirects in the past, but I'm not sure how or even if I can do what the client wants. How can I achieve this, possibly using .htaccess and DNS entries? Caveats: I can't have the site at a 3rd party domain and the client isn't able/allowed to register any additional domains:

  What is a good approach to an anti-spam algorithm for a website similar to reddit? Their anti-spam algorithm seems awfully broken (banning on words in the title and doing a horrible job for that matter). Considering a post spam because it has the word 'spam' in the title is really not a wise choice. Anyway, how can one approach such problem ? Are there any tools that help in such cases? Also, what are the /technical/ reasons behind reddit's choice not using reCAPTCHA on every post submission? It seems like a much better solution than what they have right now. Since reddit is basically a community-driven website why not give such power to the communities' trusted members?

• Java on easypeasy

  I have successfully installed easypeasy in an Asus EeePC. I want to use the authoring programm Hot Potatoes, which is/uses a Java application (sorry for my poor technical vocabulary). It is installed and extracted. I have found guidelines about how to use it here (it is in German but the instructions for the terminal are clear). But it seems I cannot install any Java package. I have tried all the packages the terminal says are available and this is what terminal says: "Unable to find the package". In ubuntu I use Hot Potatoes with wine, but I cannot install it in the Asus, so I need to run it with java. Thanks for your help.

  Both Metro-style and iPhone app require approval and publishing to app store. And they focus most on user interface and the quality of the software. Developers must deal with technical aspects, such as async programming (no UI blocking), no console program (must design a UI that cope with "Standard"), no CPU hungry (pause app if deactivated), need to study the permission matrix (not full access right), and more ... A newbie is not familiar with threading and synchronization. Do you thick they are too demanding for newbie developers? Can you give more examples how demanding it is?

• Webcam Q&A page with guest "speakers" ideas?

  I want to host one way webcam Q&A's/AMA's and embed it on my sites webpage. I must be able to have specified hosts for these Q&A's connect quickly and easily to the webpage, and read user posted messages (questions) for interaction. I know there are some systems out there, like tinychat, but I'm unaware if there is anything exactly used for what I am looking for. Perhaps requiring a specific account/password before allowing streaming on the page, where I can email the host a password or directions to create an account to begin live streaming. Most of these people doing the question and answers on webcam will have little technical knowledge, so extra cookie points goes to ease of use! Thanks for ideas in advance!   I'm looking for a label to describe the practice of using human-based computation methods or other means of "faking" an algorithm for the sake of getting a product or demo off the ground quickly without spending the time to develop an technical/scalable/analytical solution? Eg: using Amazon Turk to count the number of empty tables in a restaurant. I'm also looking to learn more about this subject, but not sure what to search for. Human-based computation is only one method, I'm interested in the general idea of pseudo-implementation. Any ideas, recommended reading? Thanks
