  • how to create iso dvd image for use with mac/osx "Disk Utility"?

    This seemed way easier on my pc. I would just pop a blank dvd in the drive, it asked what I wanted to do with it, to which I would respond, "burn dvd with nero" (paraphrasing), then I would pick "new" and just drag and drop the folders in there. Mac appears to have "Disk Utility" which just requires that I 'choose an image' but then doesn't bother to detail - how to do this - what the options mean e.g. format "mac OS extended (journaled)" is that ever going to be readable on a non mac machine? I want to create an ISO standard dvd as per the 'default' you'd get on nero. All the stuff on the web points to doing things with 'terminal' (the whole point of buying a mac was to get away from command line jiggery pokery - I'm trying to burn some photos not land a friggin lunar module here!) Please, if you can just provide some simple instructions on what I need to achive this I'd be extremely grateful. Ta muchley in advance.

  • Where do you find the Bash source files of programs in Linux/Mac OSX?

    I am currently writing some convenience methods for my terminal in my bash_profile and am sure if what I am writing is "the best way". I figure a good way to verify whether what I'm doing is right or not would be to find some source code of more established programs and see how they do it. My question then is, where can I find this code on my Mac? An example is, with Macports installed, where is the source code that opens the port interactive console when I type nothing but "port" in my shell? (I added Linux in the title even though I am on a Mac because I assume the answer would be the same for both) Edit: The answer I am looking for is in terms of which directory relative to the programs will I find their unix scripts.

There are about 11 of these "failed to authenticate" messages logged in quick succession. It looks to me like someone is sitting there trying to guess the password. However, when I tried to replicate this I get the same log messages except that this extra message appears after five attempts: 13/03/10 1:18:48 PM DirectoryService[11] Failed Authentication return is being delayed due to over five recent auth failures for username: tom. I don't want to accuse someone of trying to break into an account without being sure that they were actually trying to break in. My question is this: is it almost definitely someone guessing a password, or could the 11 "failed to authenticate" messages be caused by something else? EDIT: The actual user wasn't logged in, or using a computer at the time of the log in attempts.

  • Password Manager that can sync a Blackberry and Mac OSX.

    I use a Blackberry Bold and a Macbook Pro. I am looking for a solution to have a synchronized password manager between the two devices. All the commercial ones I have discovered won't work between a Blackberry and a Mac. The almost solution was KeePass. I like the application on the Blackberry but I could not get the sync working reliably to the Mac. As well, I had to run the PC application by using Mono on the Mac and it was pretty slow. I am happy to pay for a good solution.

    I'm using Emacs on different environments and unsure of which version to use so that they all behave the same as I hear there are differences between XEamcs, Emacs, and some other versions. Which should I use? By the way, I am not looking to start a flame war with this post, I just want a version of emacs that runs the same everywhere which is the whole point of me wanting to switch to emacs.

    i have noticed many mac applications sort the files alphabetically rather than by type. a good example would be coda by panic.com the files in the file menu are organized alphabetically, i requested for them to add the feature to organize files by type and they've said that its a finder thing. so i went in search to look at other applications to see if they were organizing by type i noticed dreamweaver cs4 had this same problem and now including dreamweaver cs5. there has to be something in the mac that does this and that i can modify. i played with spotlight and it now displays its files by type (thinking thats what i can do) but it didnt take affect in other applications. what library are these applications using to display a file menu for its files?

    so for a further detail about this, my friend has a macbook pro thats all i know about it specfically aside from the fact it was running os x lion. before this guy got a hold of the computer that he knows, I could hit the command key and the R key to get to the disk utilities and what-not to install OS X Lion on it, but now since whomever my friend let touch th mac, i no longer and do any of the start-up keys for it.. I've been trying to geth the mac os x lion on there and im having no luck what-so-ever, if anyone could help me with this i would be greatly appreciative... if you need anymore info that i may be able to provide please feel free to ask. thank you again.

    It seems that I am no longer able to Get Bundles using TextMate after upgrading to Snow Leopard. I get the following error message. Googling shows no solutions.   • Windows 7 with two network cards doesn't route traffic

    I have simple task to do: I have wni7 with two nics.I want to connect another comp(osx) to win7 through second nic to connect it to internet. I already changed the registry. Win7 interface with 192.168.2.1 has no gateway set (no point to do that) OSX interface with 192.168.2.2 has gateway set to 192.168.2.1 I do not add any routes on win7, every thing seems to be already there network on second nic is detected as "undefined network" (probably effect of no gateway) i can achieve any connectivity to internet from OSX only by enabling network connection sharing on nic with 192.168.2.1, but it enables NAT and I'm interested only in pure routing without nat(it's a setup for some research). firewall is off. It seems to me that win7 refuses to forward packets for some reason. Perhaps "undefined network" and NLA service is to blame, although i couldn't find any info about that.   • Amazon EC2 IPSEC

    I have configured a ubuntu 12.04 64-bit server machine on Amazon AWS to act as a strongswan IPSEC server. I want to connect to it from my MAC OSX Lion's inbuilt IPSEC client. The OSX machine is in my home network. I log into the AWS machine using a ssh to ubuntu@public-ip and I provide the private RSA key in form of .pem file which I downloaded when the machine instance was created. The ssh connection works file but the IPSEC connection fails. What credentials/configurations should I provide for an IPSEC connection from my OSX client to AWS ubuntu server? My OSX machine is behind an ISP provided modem/router. Appreciate any help and thanks in advance

    Hey i got an White Macbook and, has to go in 10 hours to a conference. And I'm having a lot of problems. First, I wanted to have Rails 3, so I used MacPorts to install Ruby 1.8.7. Tt worked well ;) So now I was thinking I should install Rails 3.. but no, no!.. it says.. $ sudo gem install rails --pre ERROR:   Error installing rails:                  activesupport requires Ruby version = 1.8.7.   • Can't get past 2542 Threads in Java on 4GB iMac OSX 10.6.3 Snow Leopard (32bit)

    I am running the following program trying to figure out how to configure my JVM to get the maximum number of threads my machine can support. For those that might not know, Snow Leopard ships with Java 6. In other words, I'd like to pop up a semi-transparent box with some text in it that can be immediately dismissed, or will fade away in a set amount of time. Is there a library to do this?   • Does Java Mac OSX native look and feel respect UIManager font changes?

    I have a java applet and the only look and feel that works properly is the native mac one. I wanted to make the fonts a bit larger and tried using the standard UIManager methods UIManager.put("Label.font", new Font("Georgia", Font.PLAIN, 18)); This produces no change. It does not throw an exception, of course. Does anyone know if the native mac look and feel ignores these? I know there are specific ways to make controls different sizes on mac but these only seem to make them smaller. You cannot make the controls larger than regular.

  • Font for mac osx that is as readable and compact as the default xterm (X11) font.

    The font used in xterms is extremely compact yet readable. What font is that? The closest I've found that I can use in other other applications is DejaVu Sans Mono or Bitstream Vera Sans Mono. Those are as compact as xterms vertically but take up more space horizontally. I'd really like to switch from xterms to Terminal.app and this is the one thing holding me back. (I also think that font would be much better for emacs, xcode, or whatever editor.) ADDED: In Terminal.app you can adjust the character and line spacing for any font. Is this possible in other applications? I'm open to any other font that is as compact and readable as the xterm font. Dina looks really nice but it doesn't seem to work for Mac.
