  i am using linux, in fact i started using ubuntu when i first met computers if i remember i used ubuntu 4.04 and other versions. it worked perfectly fine all the way but in ubuntu 12.04 skype crashes it loges in successfully but when its logged in skype crashes. • Apache2 on Ubuntu Server w/ CGI, FastCGI, mod_php

  I've looked at various websites on configuring Apache with cgi and can't get mod_fcgid to work. It works fine using mod_php5, but I wanted to compare performance using cgi and fastcgi. I tried methods using FGCIWrapper among various other techniques and the only one that didn't result in an unlogged 403 or download of the file was using "Action application/x-httpd-php /usr/bin/php-cgi" When trying to configure mod_fcgid the file normally just started a download of an unprocessed file. I used wget to check headers and type was "application/x-httpd-php" At one point I was able to get to the page, but it resulted in a 403, which was listed in access.log, but not error.log (I was told it should be in there too) I tried to get it working on a fresh install of Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS and 10.10 and had the same results on both, so I'm not doing something correctly in terms of configuration. I tried virtualmin and could only get mod_php to work. The page just prompted a download when selecting cgi or fcgi from the control panel.

• can't properly shutdown ubuntu and sound problem on HP mini 311 netbook

  hi, I recently bought a HP mini 311 netbook. I replaced its harddrive and installed ubuntu 10.04. Since then, I have encountered some very strange problem with its sound and shutdown/reboot. At times, when I start the computer, it will have no sound, on the GUI the sound is at max, but no sound is available. This sometimes also happen after after upgrades, hibernate, and toggling the wireless radio button. Strangely, when the sound is out the device will also refuse to be shutdown. If I shutdown the computer using the GUI, it will simply go back to the log in screen without actually shutting down. If I use "sudo shutdown 0", the computer will hang on the loading screen of the shut down process. I had to force the pc to shutdown by holding the power button down. usually (probably always) after I force a turn-off then start off again. the sound and shutdown become normal. I wonder if anyone have clues regarding to the cause of this problem. This the info about the computer: 1) installed ubuntu 10.04LTS RC, later upgraded to formal released version. 2) cat /proc/asound/version == "Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21." however, when doing 'alsaconf' the version displayed is 1.0.23 any help is appreciated. • Can't add NetworkManager applet to gnome panel

  I have researched this problem extensively and I can't seem to find an answer. In Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, I want to connect to my VPN through the NetworkManager applet. I installed all the network manager packages, including the gnome client. I understand I need to add the "Notification Area" to the panel, which I have done. I checked that the NetworkManager is running: nate@nate-desktop:~$ service network-manager status network-manager start/running, process 763 In /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, I have added managed=true (don't know if this matters, but I saw it suggested on one forum): nate@nate-desktop:~$ more /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf # This file is installed into /etc/NetworkManager, and is loaded by # NetworkManager by default. I'm using windows 7 right now so ideally I'd like a barebones fast linux dual booted that uses less battery etc while traveling. I've found Pencil Project, but it require xulrunner-1.9 (seem to be incompatible with xulrunner-1.9.2) to be run as a standalone application; However it can be used as a firefox plugin..but is a bit slower. • Deploying a Rails app on an Ubuntu server using Git

  I'm completely new to Linux, but today I find myself setting up a server (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS lucid) from scratch to host a Rails application. Anyway, I managed to get a Rails app up and running on the server itself, but I had to scrap that because I want to use Git. So I setup a git repository on the server, then pushed all the code from my local machine to the repository. Buuuut, of course Git doesn't actually store the files themselves in the repository -- all the code for my Rails app is now only on my local machine. How am I supposed to tell the server to host that? Right now my solution is to have the server use git to pull the code from its own repository. That's the code I'll host for all the world to see. In order to update the code, I guess I'll have to do something like this: Update the code on my local machine. Do some git adds, git commits, and a git push. On the server, do a git pull to update the code. So my question is, am I doing this the right way? enter code here

• System Settings and Software Center does not pull up after fresh install 11.10 amd64

  I've had a few install rounds with ubuntu ever since 8.04 and has worked flawlessly every time. However, for some reason, when I try to click either System Settings or Software Center, the icon pulses as if it were working to come up but never does. The same goes for System Settings. I would expect that a password dialog would appear, but nothing shows. Is there bug with 11.10 that didn't exist with 11.04?

  I know that alt+ctrl+F(1-6) take me to available command lines, and that F1 command line is used for debugging, and F8 is the GUI desktop, that what i know but today i noticed there in F7 that does nothing, it only displays some sort of log in message, and there is F(9-12) that just display black screen with blinking under scroll . can anyone enlighten me what those consoles do, are they for trouble shooting maybe? i use ubuntu netbook 10.10.

  I installed Code::Blocks on Ubuntu 9.10, but when I start it from terminal, it shows the following error: relocation error: /usr/lib/libcodeblocks.so.0: symbol _Z18wxSafeConvertWX2MBPKw, version WXU_2.8.2 not defined in file libwx_baseu-2.8.so.0 with link time reference What is wrong with it? It seems to me I have installed all necessary libraries. Any ideas? P.S. I am a Linux noobie - so sorry if it is some kind of a well-known mistake.

• gcc 4.5 installation problem under ubuntu

  I tried to install gcc 4.5 on ubuntu 10.04 but failed. Here is a compile error that I don't know how to solve. Is there anyone successfully install the latest gcc on ubuntu? Following is my steps and the error message, I'd like to know where is the problem.... Step1: download these files: gcc-core-4.5.0.tar.gz gcc-g++-4.5.0.tar.gz gmp-4.3.2.tar.bz2 mpc-0.8.1.tar.gz mpfr-2.4.2.tar.gz Step2: Unzip above files Step3: move gmp, mpc, mpfr to the gcc-4.5.0/ directory. mv gmp-4.3.2 gcc-4.5.0/gmp mv mpc-0.8.1 gcc-4.5.0/mpc mv mpfr-2.4.2 gcc-4.5.0/mpfr Step4: go to gcc-4.5.0 directory and do configuration: sudo ./configure Step5: compile and install sudo make sudo make install The first 4 steps is OK, I can configure it successfully. However, when I try to compile it, following error message comes out, I cannot figure out what the problem is. Should I change the name from "gcc 4.5" to "gcc"?? It's a little strange that we need to do this by ourself.   When I run cucumber from my Ubuntu server I don't get details on why the scenario is failing. • Disable mysql startup in Ubuntu 10.04

  Hi all, I want to prevent mysql from starting in ubuntu 10.04 I have used update-rc.d -f mysql remove and confirmed that there is no link to the /etc/inid.d/mysql script from any of the rc?.d directories. I also ran sysv-rc-conf and it shows me that mysql is being called as part of the rc.d scripts. It is still starting on boot. How do I disable it? Regards, Bryan
