  • Survey says: Java technology rules

    - by hinkmond
Eclipse came out with their Open Source Developer Report and Survey for 2012. In it, we see (in the words of the immortal Richard Dawson, RIP) "Surveys Says!": Java computer programming language is on top. See: Java is the top Here's a quote: The Eclipse community was invited to participate in the survey between April 23 and May 15 of this year. Skerrett says the Foundation promoted the survey primarily through social media (Facebook, Twitter) and online forums. Of the 840 people who responded, 732 completed the survey... So, now we know who's on top, we can keep this in mind the next time this question comes up on Family Feud. Hinkmond

  • How can I track hits to areas of my web application?

    - by Tyson
We have a growing web application, and we currently use Google Analytics and Chartbeat to track usage and engagement (although we're open to alternatives). Unfortunately, both are geared towards content-based sites where everything is about the URL. Our URLs contain object IDs, making them less useful independently, and causing us to grow beyond Google Analytics' 50,000 unique URLs per day. How can we track hits to areas of our web application, essentially ignoring parts of the URLs?

  • Is sqlite3 faster than MySQL on shared hosting?

    - by Osvaldo
Can sqlite3 be faster than MySQL on shared hosting and small to average websites (less than 500 visitors a day). I have an account in a popular shared hosting provider and I've noticed that it has become quite slow redering pages. My doubt is that this may happen because the MySQL server is overloaded. Some CMS'es work fine with SQLlite too, so I was wandering if I should use SQLite for the new sites instead of MySQL.

    - by Dave Noderer
I’ve been working a lot with Microsoft CRM over the past few months and much of the screen level customization uses javascript. One thing I discovered today while breaking apart some dates was that the javascript getDate() returns the day of the month 1-31 as you would expect but the getMonth() returns 0-11… definitely not what I expected!!

  • Is using HTML entities (for language-specific characters) in UTF-8 necessary?

    - by Drachenzauberei
As in the subject-line. Saw the situation the other day on a page which felt weird to me. Except for markup-delimiting characters such as pointy brackets or the ampersand, escaping, say, German umlauts shouldn't be necessary, should it? Checked the encoding server-side, in-page and by way of HTTP headers, looks completely UTF-8 to me. What's your take on this and do you reckon it could adversely affect SEO or SERP placement?the page
