• Is Java a good choice for cross-platform games?

  I'm looking to create a game in Java and would like it to work on Windows, Linux, and Mac. I'm pretty sure C# is a bad choice for this, and I don't have enough experience in C or C++. I want to stay away from Flash. Therefore, Is Java a good choice for me? Mostly, I use C#, and think that Java is similar, so I assume it won't be that hard to learn. But is it fast enough? Is there a language more suited for my needs than Java?

• Web dev/programmer with 4.5 yrs experience. Better for career: self-study or master's degree? [closed]

  I'm a 28 year-old web developer/programmer with 4.5 years of experience, and I'm looking to jump-start my career. I'm trying to decide between self-study and a 1-year master's program in CS at a top school. I'm currently making 65K in a high cost-of-living area that is NOT a hot spot for technology firms. I code almost exclusively in Ruby/Rails, PHP/CodeIgniter, SQL, and JavaScript. I've slowly gained proficiency with Git. Roughly half the time I am architecting/coding, and half the time I am pounding out HTML/CSS for static brochureware sites. I'd like to make more more money while doing more challenging/interesting work, but I don't know where to start. I have an excellent academic record (math major with many CS credits, 3.9+ GPA), GRE scores, and recommendations, so I am confident that I could be admitted to a great CS master's program. On the other hand, there is the tuition and opportunity cost to consider. I feel like there are a number of practical languages/tools/skills worth knowing that I could teach myself - shell scripting, .NET, Python, Node.js, MongoDB, natural language processing techniques, etc. That said, it's one thing to read about a subject and another thing to have experience with it, which structured coursework provides. So, on to the concrete questions: What programming skills/knowledge should I develop to increase my earning potential and make me competitive for more interesting jobs? Will a master's degree in CS from a top school help me develop the above skills/knowledge, and if so, is it preferable to self-study (possibly for other reasons, e.g., the degree's value as a credential)?

Here are a few I'm proposing to myself: no absolute paths in include|require(_once)? statements no .. dirname(foo), or other means of walking up in include|require(_once)? statements put libs on the include path, not in subdirectories You can see that all of this is focusing on managing dependencies, because that is the problem I've encountered thus far. What other thumb-rule solutions to macro level problems do you have?

• gtk_widget_grab_focus() jumping to next field automatically?

  I am creating a 'C' project with glade and gtk. I want a focus on a gtkentry field naming txt_abc and so I called the function: gtk_widget_grab_focus (txt_abc); There is another gtkentry widget just after txt_abc widget naming txt_def. My problem is instead of getting focus on txt_abc widget, the cursor is automatically being focused on txt_def widget, when I am running the application. One more thing, when I am setting the focus at txt_def widget by calling the code: gtk_widget_grab_focus (txt_def); the control is again being focused on the next widget on the window, i.e. txt_name. I want the focus exactly on the widget I am setting the grab signal. How to resolve this problem.

• What is a good way to refactor a large, terribly written code base by myself? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Techniques to re-factor garbage and maintain sanity? I have a fairly large PHP code base that I have been writing for the past 3 years. The problem is, I wrote this code when I was a terrible programmer and now it's tens of thousands of lines of conditionals and random MySQL queries everywhere. As you can imagine, there are a ton of bugs and they are extremely hard to find and fix. So I would like a good method to refactor this code so that it is much more manageable. The source code is quite bad; I did not even use classes or functions when I originally wrote it. At this point, I am considering rewriting the whole thing. I am the only developer and my time is pretty limited. I would like to get this done as quickly as possible, so I can get back to writing new features. Since rewriting the code would take a long time, I am looking for some methods that I can use to clean up the code as quickly as possible without leaving more bad architecture that will come back to haunt me later. So this is the basic question: What is a good way for a single developer to take a fairly large code base that has no architecture and refactor it into something with reasonable architecture that is not a nightmare to maintain and expand?

• Where is the gtk# widget for windows forms in mono?

  Ok, I downloaded mono to program in c#. The installation worked fine and I have mono up and running. The problem is, I can't find the toolbox that contains stuff like: Common controls containers Menus and toolbars All Windows Forms THIS IS FOR THE VISUAL DESIGN PART! I cant find them! I also can't see the window to work on. (By default its called "Form1") Im trying to get mono to look like this: http://www.mono-project.com/File:Md2.png See, the window in the middle called "MainWindow" I can't see that in mono. also, on the top right, I cant find that widget box! I, as a java web applications developer, am think about possible alternatives. Many seem to have gotten rid of java, so I would not like to develop for an environmet, that users do not have on their computers, and that they are not willing to install for security reasons. • Counting product releases if you work on the backend/online services?

  I am trying to update my resume, and I would like to count the number of "product releases" that I was directly involved in with a company. It would seem to serve as a performance metric. The problem is that I was working on the backend of a very large distributed system, like along the lines of Hadoop or other huge database. We had regular 6-month major releases and other minor releases. My manager kept saying that "shipped" these releases, but "shipping" a product to me sounds like releasing single pieces of software, like Microsoft would ship Office 11 or something. Any ideas on "product releases" for backend service engineers, or any other type of performance metric?

• Image caching when rendering the same images on different pages

  I'm told to think about caching of images that will be displayed on the page. The images will be repeated throughout the website on different pages and I'm told to figure out the best way to cache these images. There could be few to dozen of images on single page. Here's few questions: Will browser caching work to display the same images across different web pages? Should I rather store images in stringified form in a memory instead, using JavaScript arrays? Store them on hard drive using 'localStorage'? What would be easiest yet best option for this? Are there any other alternatives? How to force cache? But I'm worried that there will be legal issues. I'm sorry but I do not know what is the process in doing this. I noticed for example the game Bejeweled Blitz. If I develop something similar, do I have to contact the developer and ask for permission if I develop a game with similar rules but use shapes rather than jewels? • Is the use of hashbang really a good idea? [on hold]

  I've been working on a WordPress site lately that was design with hashbang or shebang in the dynamically generated URLs. After doing some research, I noticed that there was some preference by Google in their use and how it crawled the site. However, after I ran several sitemap generators and Screaming Frog SEO Spider, I realized that the only page being crawled was the index page. So now I am questioning the use of hashbangs. What do you think? Should I attempt to remove them? Or will it even matter? And does anyone know of a easy way to remove this? The site is www.modernvintage1005.com

• What server-side language should I learn to be able to start big user-input websites (like twitter, facebook, stackexchange...)?

  I'm thinking ASP.NET, but I don't really know. Can someone tell me what a good server-side language for the "Zuckerberg-dorm-room-starting-up-a-huge-website" deal? I know the latter used PHP, but as I've understood it that's kind of outdated and C#/ASP.NET is a better way to go about it. Is HTML + CSS + JavaScript + C#/ASP.NET MVC + MySQL a good combination for it? Is MySQL combined in ASP.NET MVC? Also, where's a good tutorial for the server-side language you suggest? As mentioned previously it has to be able to handle massive user-input without much fuss.

• How to move from Programmer to Project Lead

  At my job, I'm currently a programmer, but in the next few weeks I'll be taking control my own project. I was wondering if anyone else here has been in the same situation, and if so, what advice you can offer to help me be able to better run my project. Experience in dealing with contractors would be greatly appreciated. A little more info: Project will have 3 people including myself, with extra people coming in when needing testing. The project has been programmed mainly by 2 people I would like to contribute to the programming as I like doing it and think I can add to the program, but am afraid of how the contractors will react. I don't want to create bad feelings which may harm the project. EDIT: Forgot to mention that I'll have to be picking up communications with customers to make sure their needs are met. Any advice on talking to customers cold would be greatly appreciated. EDIT 2: This is not a new project, I'm picking it up around version 6. Sorry that I didn't make it clear before.

I would like to create a second branch that contains the Debian packaging for the project (with the intent of creating a build recipe that merges it into the main branch before building). I've done this before by just pushing a local branch to lp:~me/project_name/debian. However, this stacks the branch with trunk, which I don't want (it becomes impossible to delete trunk without deleting the Debian packaging branch - a restriction that has caused problems before).
