  • Update a list of things without hitting every entry

    I have a list in a database that the user should be able to order. itemname| order value (int) --------+--------------------- salad | 1 mango | 2 orange | 3 apples | 4 On load from the database, I simply order by order_value. By drag 'n drop, he should be able to move apples so that it appears at the top of the list.. itemname| order value (int) --------+--------------------- apples | 4 salad | 1 mango | 2 orange | 3 Ok. So now internally I have to update EVERY LIST ITEM! If the list has 20 or 100 items, that's a lot of updates for a simple drag operation. itemname| order value (int) --------+--------------------- apples | 1 salad | 2 mango | 3 orange | 4 I'd rather do it with only one update. One way I thought of is if "internal Order" is a double value. itemname| order value (double) --------+--------------------- salad | 1.0 mango | 2.0 orange | 3.0 apples | 4.0 SO after the drag n' drop operation, I assign apples has a value that is less than the item it is to appear in front of: itemname| order value (double) --------+--------------------- apples | 0.5 salad | 1.0 mango | 2.0 orange | 3.0 .. and if an item is dragged into the middle somewhere, its order_value is bigger than the one it appears after .. here I moved orange to be between salad and mango: itemname| order value (double) --------+--------------------- apples | 0.5 salad | 1.0 orange | 1.5 mango | 2.0 Any thoughts on better ways to do this?

  • How to sort an array or ArrayList<Point> ASC first by x and then by y?

    Hi everyone, I just want to use Collections.sort or Arrays.sort to sort a list of points (class Point) by x first and then by y. I have a class Ponto that implements Comparable like this: public int compareTo(Ponto obj) { Ponto tmp = obj; if (this.x < tmp.x) { return -1; } else if (this.x > tmp.x) { return 1; } return 0; } but now I want to sort by y too after x. How can I do that by modifying the above code? Or is that a better and "clean" way to do this? I also use to pass this code to C++, in which I've created a structure called Point with a equivalent comparable method.

  • Design review - do you think I'm doing this the right way? First commercial project for me!

    I'm tasked with designing an application that will allow a person to scan a legal document, save that associated with a Name and save it to a database. Now, inside of the Organization, there are many departments, and each department can have many sub departments. Problem lies in that some larger organizations will have many departments and smallers ones will only have 1 or two. I've though about creating a Department table and a Supdepartment table to create associations, etc. That way it's extensible and users can dynamically create departments to fit my program to their organizational scheme. Am I approaching this the right way? As I said, this is my first commercial application so I want to do it right and set a name for myself for delivering things on time and good code for other to expand upon.

  • Would it be faster to use CMS for building the first site in ASP.NET?

    I need an opinion and advise from experienced ASP.NET people, what way to go. Assuming that a developer has some practical background with HTML/JavaScript/PHP on one side and some .NET/C#/WPF experience on the other side. No previous hands on experience with ASP.NET - only theory and some read books on the topic. The task is to build ASP.NET web site with User Managment functionality (user authentication, user account, user buying history, user points and so on) and E-commerce functionality with shopping cart, checkout and all needed for this. Is it worth, i.e. will it be faster, more reliable and secure in the result to use a ASP.NET CMS system (for example Sitefinity from Telerik as declared developer friendly) to build such first site? In what case the learning curve will be more steep and it will take more time to achieve similar results? Notes to take into consideration: 1) Price of the CMS matters not very much 2) E-commerce module should be written from scratch in any case (and integrated in case of using CMS) due to very specific requirements

    Hi, I have an SQL table like this : sales(product,timestamp) I want to display a chart using Open Flash Chart but i don't know how to get the total sales per hour within the last 12 hours. ( the timestamp column is the sale date ) By example i will end up with an array like this : array(12,5,8,6,10,35,7,23,4,5,2,16) every number is the total sales in each hour.   • WinForms ToolTip will not re-appear after first use.

    I have a Forms C# application where I would like to use a toolTip on one of the text boxes. I Initialize the tool-tip in the constructor of the Form class, and it works the first time. So when I hover over the text box with my mouse it works, but once the toolTip times out and it goes away, it does not re-appear when I move my mouse away and back onto the control. I would expect it to come back and I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong.     Hi, I've read quiet a bit of documentation over the last few days about testing in Rails, I'm sitting down to write my first real test and not 100% sure how to tie what I have learned together to achieve the following functional test (testing a controller) I need to send a GET request to a URL and pass 3 parameters (simple web-service), if the functionality works the keyword "true" is simply returned, otherwise the keyword "false" is returned - its in only value returned & not contained in any , or other tags. The test should assert that if "true" is returned the test is successful. This is probably very simple so apologies for such a non-challenging question. If anyone could point me in the write direction on how I can get started, particularly how I can test the response, I'd be very grateful! Thanks!

    Hi all. I have 2 comboboxes on a form (form1) called combobox1 and combobox2. Each comboboxes should be filled with data stored in 2 different tables in Sql server 2005: table1 and table2 I mean: combobox1 -- table1 combobox2 -- table2 I fill data table with proper data and then bind the comboboxes to it separately. My problem is: after filling 2 combos, both of them have equal data got from table2.   • In Django, how to define a "location path" in order to display it to the users?

    I want to put a "location path" in my pages showing where the user is. Supposing that the user is watching one product, it could be Index > Products > ProductName where each word is also a link to other pages. I was thinking on passing to the template a variable with the path like [(_('Index'), 'index_url_name'), (_('Products'), 'products_list_url_name'), (_('ProductName'), 'product_url_name')] But then I wonder where and how would you define the hierarchy without repeating myself (DRY)? As far I know I have seen two options To define the hierarchy in the urlconf. It could be a good place since the URL hierarchy should be similar to the "location path", but I will end repeating fragments of the paths. To write a context processor that guesses the location path from the url and includes the variable in the context. But this would imply to maintain a independient hierarchy wich will need to be kept in sync with the urls everytime I modify them. Also, I'm not sure about how to handle the urls that require parameters. Do you have any tip or advice about this? Is there any canonical way to do this?

    How do YOU debug a Scala program? I mean YOU as in the person posting the Answer :) Please answer only from personal experience, not from stuff you've heard or read on the Internet. You should not believe everything you read on the Internet, especially tales of complex open-source software configurations that actually work :-) The are many Java tools which claim to support Scala in some way or another, but I have so far struck out in trying to get any one of them to actually let me set a breakpoint in Scala code and step through it. These are big, major open-source IDEs I'm talking about here. The main problem in getting a debugger to work seems to be the "version hell" with fast-changing IDEs, Plug-Ins, JDKs, and the Scala language itself. Hence, the more detailed re-statement of the question is appropriate: What is the exact version number of the IDE, Plug-In, JDK, Scala, and even Operating System, that you are successfully using?   • Why does my OpenGL ES iPhone game flicker when I first turn on the phone?

    I made a simple game for the iPhone using OpenGL ES. Everything works fine except for this problem: I turn the phone completely off, then back on, then launch my app and I get this wierd flickering! Every other frame is correct... the incorrect frames are just the same frame over and over again. If I quit the app, launch it again everything is fine. If I quit and restart 10 times in a row everything is fine every time. But if I turn the phone off, then back on, then launch the app I get the same flickering the first time I launch the app. Why is this happening?! Has anyone else had this problem? Cheers!
