• How to reliably synchronise file servers between London and Shanghai?

  We have two offices, one in London and one in Shanghai, each needing to be able to access the same set of files. This means we need a solid, speedy means of synchronising a set of folders between servers at either office. They're likely to be Windows servers, but we could look at Linux boxes if the software side makes more sense on *nix. We've considered Rsync, Unison, Gluster, and a few other options, but none of them seem capable of reliably keeping the servers in sync between such distant office locations. Each office is on DSL connectivity over the open internet, so encryption is also a factor. Does anyone have any hints for getting the servers synchronising in as close to real time as possible, without dying constantly? Andy

• Gmail exchange settings for desktop mail clients?

  So I have an ipad, and I have my gmail account there configured via Microsoft Exchange... I don't know a lot about the underlying technologies, but using exchange is mind blowingly awesome... I mean, I receive mail INSTANTLY, and to be able to sync things like my calendars and my contacts at the same time, its just amazing... So enough gloating, and onwards to the real problem... How do I do the same thing on my Mac? Any email client will do... I've tried both, the built in Mac Mail (4.5) app, as well as Outlook for Mac 2011... And I can't get it to work on either...

• General High-Level Assessment

  Guys and Gals, I've been tasked with a doozy of an assignment. The objective is something akin to "laying of hands" on several database servers which work in concert to provide data to various Web, Client-Server and Tablet-Sync'd distributed Client-Server programs. More specifically, I've been asked to come up with a "Maintenance Plan" which includes recommendations for future work to improve these machines' performance/reliability/security/etc. Might there be some good articles on teh interwebs ya'll could point me towards which would give me some good basis to start? Articles describing "These are the top 4 overarching categories and this is how you should proceed when drilling down on each of them" sort-of-thing would be fabulous. The Databases are all SQL 2005, however the compatibility level is 80 and they were originally created with ERwin based on SQL 6.5. The OSs are all Windows Server 2003. Thanks all! Tim

• Looking for internet traffic manager software for Windows 7

  I have 128 KB/s (1 Mbit/s) internet connection. Not quite fast for downloading big files, but it is okay for internet browsing. When I start big file dowload, I cannot surf the web normally: pages appears slowly, especially pictures there. Therefore I pause downloading, but I'm regularly spending much time on reading articles or leaving the computer alone, when I can allow the file being dowloaded. Is there any software that can automize the process of pausing and resuming download or simply automatically regulate internet speed for each application using Internet? I download files using different software and protocols (Download Master for http, ftp; uTorrent for torrents; many other programs for updating themselves), so I don't want to be tied to particular program for downloading.

  I am currently developing a mobile PHP project on localhost (or, to be more precise, a locally hosted website reachable at http://azgoth/) on my desktop computer and wish to check out how the design looks on my phone's various browsers, however, since the project's actually in my computer rather than the public net, I am unable to do so. Both my Desktop computer and smartphone connect to the internet via the same router, so I wondered, would it be possible to somehow make http://azgoth/ accessible to my smartphone in a similar way that my desktop computer accesses it, without making it public for everyone to see? • Process for migrating Dropbox to SpiderOak

  I want to move my data from dropbox to SpiderOak. I have 3 computers running dropbox. But I have a poor WAN connection with very limited upload bandwidth. So I thought I do as first step install the dropbox client on my server on the internet an download there my data from dropbox. Then after this I upload/backup my data from this server with a broadband connection to SpiderOak. After the backup is completed I setup the sync between my 3 computers so that they will not have to upload the data again. Will this process will work so that I don't have to upload my data again over my WAN connection at home?

• mdadm - Recovering a 'split' RAID1 array

  I have two drives that used to be part of a single RAID1 volume but it appears that one of them went offline for some time, something I've noticed just now when I rebooted my system. • proftpd - TLS connection hangs authenticating

  I setup a proftpd server that uses TLS/SSL certificate for authentication. Everything works well when I connect through lftp or Filezilla (with explicit connection). But once I attempt connecting with simple ftp connection from Filezilla, the USER command ends with the 550 response (SSL/TLS required). After that any further connection through lftp or Filezilla (with explicit connection) will hang authenticating. Anyone knows how to workaround this issue? Is there a way to ask Filezilla to automatically use TLS/SSL if required? I am using Ubuntu server 10.04 with proftpd 1.3.2c. There is no error message in the log files.

• Poor quality when trying to stream a 720p video to XBox 360 using Media Center Extender

  I have my XBox 360 set up as a Media Center Extender for my Windows 7 desktop. SD quality avi videos stream fine to my XBox, either though the video library or through Media Center Extender, but when I try a 720p mkv file, the frame rate plummets and the A/V sync is completely lost. I don't want to transcode or switch container formats (mkv isn't supported by the 360), but still want to stream. Both my desktop and 360 are plugged into the same gigabit switch, which is plugged into my ISP supplied modem/router. The video plays fine on my machine in a number of programs. Considering that I should have more than enough bandwidth to accommodate this video, why won't it play back properly?

• DRAC for remote OS install w/o Virtual Media

  I have a few DELL servers in a remote DC and our ISP has been very kind about doing OS installs for us. However, as we move to Production and multiple DC's I'd like to be able to do the installs/re-installs internally and DRAC Enterprise w/SDRAM seems ideal. My question is, how do you get your install ISO's on to the SDRAM? Can I just copy it from a local DVD (temp USB hookup) or FTP? What's the advantage to the SDRAM over just buying a USB dongle (to leave plugged into the server) and installing a bootable install ISO? We're a virtual org generally using DSL (2mb) connections to the DC over the Internet and using 'Virtual Media' isn't viable for us.

• Samba does not reload user group members

  I am running a simple samba server setup where users connect to a share which contains folders for specific user groups. The folders are chmod 2770, so only users which are in the correct group can read/write in them. The problem is that if I change group memberships (i.e. remove user from group / add user to group; changes are in sync between clients and server!) samba does not automatically reload the group memberships for the user, so they can still write to groups that they are no longer a member of etc. I either have to reconnect to the share or to restart samba to apply the changes. • Rsync over NFS with QoS: How to view real transfer speed?

  We have a bandwidth limit between a Linux server and a NAS, created using 'tc' with an IP filter. When writing to an NFS mount of the NAS, rsync claims a very high transfer speed for each file and then waits a long time before acknowledging that everything has finished. The total time taken is consistent with the QoS limit and the time taken by the same transfer over FTP. Why does the write to the NFS mount report higher transfer speeds than are actually happening over the network? How can I monitor the actual bandwidth of the transfer?

• Is it possible to create an SFTP drop box?

  I have a Windows server with folders accessible via SFTP (server is running OpenSSH). scp is blocked. I would like to copy files from a Linux server to the Windows server. SFTP seems like a good option. Ideally I'd like something similar to an FTP drop box, so that the Linux box could just copy files directly over to the Windows box. I'm also open to any solutions to this that would allow me to copy the files while offering the least amount of hassle. The language I'd be using on the Linux box is python; not sure if that factors in or not.

  TLDR I want toggle between the following usages of a usb-port via the terminal: use like a normal usb-port only supply energy to charge Story I recently got me something like a magna doodle that can save your drawings to pdf, which can be moved to your computer via usb afterwards. Now the thing is that you can't save anything while it's plugged in. Because it's the only way to charge it, it bugs me that I can't find a software solution and laziness I want to keep it plugged in and toggle the connection to the computer only when needed. I noticed that it's charging and usable when it is plugged in and the computer is shut down or suspened. So I guess that there's a way to do it. • How to play two or more videos side by side in a syncronized fashion in Linux?

  I have two (or more) video files that I want to play side by side. I could do that simply by opening them in two seperate windows, but that would also seperate all the controls (play/pause/forward/...). I want to play them in a synchronized fashion so that pause/forwarding/... works on both videos simultaneously so that they always stay at the same timecode and they don't go out of sync. How would I accomplish that in Linux? This is needed for viewing only, so compositing them into a new video file first should be avoided if possible, but if there isn't an easy way to do that, I welcome answers doing it with composition as well.

• Anybody know how to get podcasts sorted correctly on a Zune?

  If I could understand the logic behind it I could actually manage to get my stuff sorted correctly on the device. It doesn't matter how things are sorted on disk, or in the software itself. As items are added to the sync list they end up sorted in some weird manner which, quite frankly, brings out an anger in me that scares me. A primitive, misshapen and unthinking anger. Kind of like the lumpy guy in Altered States. Frankly, I'm afraid one day its going to burst forth and I will track down the entire Zune team and make them pay for their failures. Help me prevent this from happening. Help me understand what I need to do to ensure my podcasts end up in the order I wish them to be in, not some obscure random order that makes no sense.

• rsync doesn't use delta transfer on first run

  I'm trying to synchronize a large local directory (with a batch file using rsync 3.0.7 on Cygwin, Windows 7 x64, 30k files, 200gb size) to a remote server (Debian x64 with kernel 2.6, rsyncd 3.0.7) over a slow internet connection (90kbyte/s upload). I know almost all files are identical and I verified that using md5sum locally and remotely. However when executing rsync from my local machine every file gets transferred completely for the first time. When I terminate the batch file after a few transfers and run it again then the already transferred files are skipped. But as soon as it gets to a file not yet transferred it uploads the file as a whole again instead of noticing that the checksum is the same locally and remotely. The batch file calling rsync looks like this (backslashes and line brakes added here for readability): c:\cygwin\bin\rsync.exe --verbose --human-readable --progress --stats \ --recursive --ignore-times --password-file pwd.txt \ /cygdrive/d/ftp/data/ \ rsync://[email protected]:33400/data/ | \ c:\cygwin\bin\tee.exe --append rsync.log I experimented using the following parameters in varying combinations but that didn't help either: --checksum --partial --partial-dir=/tmp/.rsync-partial --compress

• Gnome 3 - Unable to change date and time

  I am running Arch Linux with Gnome 3. Unfortunately, although my time and date settings in /etc/rc.conf show that HARDWARECLOCK='UTC' and TIMEZONE='America/LosAngeles'. I continue to get the timezone of Europe/London. If I try to change the date and time via the GUI. It requires root access. After authorizing root access, the date and time may be changed; however, after closing the GUI window, it automatically reverts back to the previous incorrect timezone. I am able to use pool.ntp.org in order to sync my time to the correct one; however, this works only for the current session and is not fixed. This solution is inconvenient since there is not always network access. What other solutions are available for this problem?

• Need an alerting system if my cloning script fails

  I've configured a nightly rsync to mirror one server to a standby offsite backup server. The total datastore on the primary is 1.5TB. In the course of getting this working, I ran into numerous instabilities with the environment, which I seem to have sorted out, but even though it's now working, I am still nervous. This is intended to be a disaster-scenario standby server, and if disaster strikes and the standby does not have all the proper data synchronized, I'm out of a job. Thus, I want to script a system that will confirm, after each nightly sync, that the destination data matches the source. I realize that rsync does this, but if rsync doesn't complete fully (which was happening during the setup troubleshooting), I need to know. Any suggestions? I'm best with Ruby, if that is relevant for the solution.

• What does Libre Office do to an existing Excel sheet to bloat its size?

  I try to avoid using Libre Office on existing Excel created workbooks because of the potential for unpleasant results. In this case Libre Office bloated the size of the workbook for some reason unknown to me. I would like to know if Libre Office does this to all Excel workbooks or just something in that workbook that causes it. Software involved: Microsoft Office Excel 2010 Libre Office 3.5.x (exact version unknown) Dropbox (merely to sync changes) Platforms involved: Office on Windows (master of the obvious on that one I suppose..) Libre Office on Mac OS 10.6 Types of data stored in this workbook: Text Integers 1 column with a simple formula spanning the entire worksheet representing that particular row (=CONCATENATE(A2285,B2285,D2285), =CONCATENATE(A2286,B2286,D2286), etc.) Total of 3,500 plus rows Here is a photo with details described within, but I'll go ahead and explain the photo as well: This screenshot is from Dropbox history of the .xlsx workbook. • No internet connection for some programmes after installing ad hoc wireless network

  After installing a wireless network (through the program iPhoneModem) several programmes have stopped working when connected to the Internet using another wireless connection. Working programmes: Firefox (browser) uTorrent (p2p) FileZilla (ftp) etc. Programmes that are not working: Chrome (browser) Digsby (IM client) etc. I'm running Windows 7. I have tried to disable Windows Firewall entirely as well as AVG anti virus, with no effect. I've tried to run the FixIt program from Microsoft adressing a corrupt TCP/IP stack. This too had no effect. Any suggestions?

• Reducing CPU load to absolute minimum [on hold]

  I have had a couple of things gone missing I believe stolen in my shared apartment and want to run my laptop constantly with a webcam attached, running webcam surveillance software to record/ take pictures when motion is sensed. Id like to take whatever steps are necessary to be able to run the laptop constantly without the fan coming on, as its quite loud and even though it will be hidden it can be heard. Thus Id like to know what steps I can take to reduce CPU to the bare minimum for the laptop to boot up and run the camera software and send images via ftp / email when necessary. I have windows 7 installed, though I can reinstall it clean. Which are the windows services can I turn off, and more extreme disabling or measures of whatever kind which I can take. The OS would need to run the camera, wifi / networking. Thanks very much for any help.
