• How to track opens and pageviews in PDFs?

  I know how to track clicks in links to pdfs and pfd's downloads. But I need to track how many times a PDF is opened after being downloaded and if possible track how many times certain pages are shown to users. Tracking has to be done without warnings that personal information is being sent somewhere. I do not want readers personal informations, just to know how many opens happened, so this warnings would be inaccurate. Can anyone help by pointing to a tutorial or an example? If you are sure that this can't be done, can you please point to documentation that explains why?

• Depth Map resolution shifting

  the problem is with shadow mapping as you can see, actually it works fine but in a certain condition that the Depth Map size must be equal to the size of rendering buffer, I use an infinite directional light so if the window is 800x600 the depth map must be 800x600, and when i change the size of the shadow map to be 900x600 it starts to be shifted and when it's size be 1024x1024 it also shifts till it disappears the GLSL shadow function float calcShadow(sampler2D Dmap, vec4 coor){ vec4 sh = vec4((coor.xyz/coor.w),1); sh.z *= 0.9; return step(sh.z,texture2D(Dmap,sh.xy).r); } here's the result when it's the same size as the window Colored result & Depth Map and here's the shifted result, as you can notice the depth map is exactly as the previous one with the addition of white space to the right.   I was trying to see the effect of time slicing. And how it can consume significant amount of time. Actually, I was trying to divide a certain work into number of threads and see the effect. I have a two core processor. So two threads can run in parallel. I was trying to see if I have a work w that is done by 2 threads, and if I have the same work done by t threads with each thread doing w/t of the work. How much does time slicing play a role in it As time slicing is time consuming process, I was expecting that when I do the same work using a two thread process or by a t thread process, the amount of time taken by the t thread process will be more Any suggestions?

  I've searched around and it seems like most people are using tile-based map systems. I suppose this question is more theoretical than practical (I am not very concerned about memory or performance speed), but I want to know: what other ways can a map be created in a game? A map being a graphic representation of terrain that can be navigated, has entrances and exits, and boundares (no-go zones). Besides using text files to store and arrays to load tile data, one idea I had was to store a map entirely as a graphic file and use queries on the pixel colour to determine boundaries (ie, you can only move in a certain direction if the way is bright enough in that direction). What other creative map systems are out there?

• How can you put all images from a game to 1 file?

  I've just finished a basic RPG game written in C++ SFML, I've put a lot of effort into the game and I'd want to distribute it, however I've ran into a small issue. Problem is, I have well over 200 images and map files (they're .txt files which hold map codes) all in the same folder as the executable, when I look in the folder, it makes me want to cry a little bit seeing so many resources, I've never seen a game which shows you all the resources directly, instead I believe they pack the resources in a certain file. Well, that's what I'm trying to achieve: I'm hoping to pack all the images in 1 file (Maybe the .txt files as well) then being able to read from that file or easily add to it.

• Making a level editor for my game

  I am doing a 2D sprite based game in XNA for WP7, The game logic is simple, you start at some point, you want to avoid obstacles and reach a certain goal. obviously I need to make many levels for the game to be challenging and funny. I am considering making a level editor for my game where I can be able to design the level using some kind of GUI then it translates that to a .lvl or something that the game can read and interpret that to a playable level. • Targeting a vehicle with complex movement?

  Targeting a vehicle with known constant velocity is simple, and collision is guaranteed. Imprecise AI can be modeled by adding a small error factor. But how would one go about targeting a vehicle whose movements are more complex? Perhaps it's evading the AI or another game object. I've been thinking about how I'd do it myself in a FPS (in which bullets have finite speed) and think there might need to be at least couple of targeting modes based on the target's movement in the previous second or so: If it's near linear (peak acceleration in a certain range) target with the linear model If it's highly irregular (perhaps size of bounding box of recent positions could be used?) , target at an average For now I can assume 2d space, AI is stationary and projectile moves linearly.

  I am reading/learning about interfaces in C# at the moment, and thus far I managed to understand how it differs from an abstract class. In the book I am reading the author explains that interfaces are the ultimate abstract class and that it simply sets the standard of certain methods the inheriting class will have, but then provides the following example... static void Main(string[] args) { ... • When trying running Ubuntu 12.10 off a usb drive, I encounter an error while prevent me from doing anything else

  The details are that I used Universal USB Installer version 1.9.1.8 from pendrivelinux.com to install ubuntu 12.10 onto a 4gb pendrive as per instruction on Ubuntu's website. However, after I boot with drive I am met with the following message: "The system is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself." Pressing Ctrl Alt F1 doesn't allow me access and the options on the dialog box either send me through a loop returning me to the previous dialog or just leave me dead in the water. Pressing Ctrl Alt Del does however restart the computer if I am dead in the water, so ubuntu isn't COMPLETELY unresponsive... I feel I should mention that I'm trying to run this distribution on my netbook. I can't install it directly to the harddrive since I need my current Windows distribution for certain programs that don't quite agree with WINE yet.

I want to store certain global settings, such as the age limit for news articles, admin contacts etc, in a file NOT within the database (i.e. to avoid unnecessary database query's) Where would the best place to store this be? global.asax? app.config? or a custom XML file? how would i import these at runtime? • System76 Galago UltraPro keyboard?

  I'm not sure whether this is the correct place to ask this question, but here it is. I am currently using the previous version of the "Gazelle Professional" laptop from System76. The keyboard does get a bit getting used to, but now I really like it, and in fact find all other keyboards puny. I find many reviews of the new Galago UltraPro criticize its keyboard, saying it is very hard to press, but from the photos, it seems to use the same kind of keys, at least with the same markings, as the GazP. Will the keyboard be any "worse" than that of the GazP? Some reviews criticize the GazP keyboard too, and certain brands (Apple) do have shockingly soft chiclet keyboards, so I'm not so sure. I certainly don't want to shell out a lot of cash and end up with a keyboard I can't type properly on.

  This isn't a language-specific thing as far as I'm concerned. I was wondering what may be a quick way to change the COLOR of a certain on-screen element such as a button and its associated text. I would assume there is a trick to making a graphics engine so maybe individuals pixels or groups of sprites can have their colors easily shifted. A lot of game interface buttons and such have this so you know when an event like a click has occurred. Any pseudo code would be helpful and I am working in Android (not XML fluff), but again, this probably is not a very specific question, just an inquiry on how to go about this.

  I'm re-working on the design of an existing application which is build using WebForms. Currently the plan is to work it into a MVP pattern application while using Ninject as the IoC container. The reason for Ninject to be there is that the boss had wanted a certain flexibility within the system so that we can build in different flavor of business logic in the model and let the programmer to choose which to use based on the client request, either via XML configuration or database setting. I know that Ninject have no need for XML configuration, however I'm confused on how it can help to dynamically inject the dependency into the system? Imagine I have a interface IMember and I need to bind this interface to the class decided by a xml or database configuration at the launch of the application, how can I achieve that?

• Wrong/corrupted icon in dash

  I am facing a problem with the dash not showing proper/actual icons for certain applications such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Daily Mail. Instead of getting the standard icons for these applications, I get to see a default icon for all the applications. I have added a snapshot to show the problem. The icons that are shown in the launcher once launched or in the /usr/share/applications directory are proper. I have tried rebuilding the icon cache, but that did not help. I have also tried switching to other icons themes. This issue does not appear with Gnome Shell or KDE. I have also tried deleting ~/.local/share/applications/menu-xdg, there was none in the first place. I am using Ubuntu 12.10. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• Is a blob more efficient than a varchar for data that can be ANY size?

  When setting up a database I want to use the most efficient data type for potentially fairly long data. Currently my project is to store song titles and thoughts pertaining to that song. Some titles might be 5 characters or longer than 100 characters and the thoughts could run pretty long. Is it more efficient to use a varchar set to 8000 or to use a blob? Is using a blob the same as a varchar, in that there is a set size it is allocated regardless of what it holds? or is it just a pointer and it doesn't really use much space on the table? Is there a certain set size of a blob in KB or is it expandable?

• Which VCS is efficient for storing small changes to big text files?

  A government agency publishes a text file with thousands of records. The entire file is about 60MB. Every day the file has about 60 new or changed records. We need to validate some info against that file, and for auditing purposes, we may need to recover the file as it was in certain date. I thought I could use a VCS to store the file using git, but I understand git stores the entire text file gzipped, so the 60BM file will still need about 30MB to store everyday version. I wonder if one of the free VCS stores only diff/patch files.

• How to deal with OOP design problems in interviews?

  This is a question where I seek guidance from fellow/senior developers to get into my dream company - it's a pioneer in OOP and Agile. I've already failed once to clear an interview. One part I feel most challenging is to come up with a proper Object Oriented design(classes, interfaces, methods, interactions etc.) in a very short time for certain situations like Pacman, Game Of Life and so on. As the problems are unprecedented ones - my approach is mostly to try different things and then make decisions - which they feel is not clear and not what they expect from a developer with 5+ years of experience. I've already studied a few books on patterns, OOP - it didn't help me much and I think it'll take a bit more than that. Could some one please guide on what specifically shall I practice so that I can do better at design problems as above. I want to refine my approach and have a better thought process.

  I have icedtea6-plugin installed on my Ubuntu box. The weird thing is, when I am browsing the internet, certain website are able to use the Java and some websites are not. For instance, I am able to log in to my bank at nordea.dk. They use a Java applet to authenticate the user. But when I try to use keepvid.com, it says "Loading Java Applet". And then after a minute or two it says "Error: Please click here to download Java. If you already have Java, please restart your browser and try again." The thing is I've restarted my computer, closed and opened my browser(chromium) and none of it seems to help. Could someone please point me in the right direction to solve this problem? Thanks.
