  • How effecient is a details table?

    At my job, we have pseudo-standard of creating one table to hold the "standard" information for an entity, and a second table, named like 'TableNameDetails', which holds optional data elements. On average, for every row in the main table will have about 8-10 detail rows in it. My question is: What kind of performance impacts does this have over adding these details as additional nullable columns on the main table?

  • JIRA or Trac?

    I used Atlassian JIRA for bug and issue tracking at my last job. I absolutely loved it and it was particularly easy on the eyes. My present company is using Trac instead, and while it does do all the basics, I am finding it really lacking, particularly with the inability to easily setup multiple projects and link issues. Oh, and the fact that it uses SQLLite is a bit of an issue for me to. Does anyone have any other good reasons to switch?

  • C# code cleaning/auditing tool (stand-alone outside of the IDE).

    Does anyone know of a stand-alone tool for C# code cleaning/auditing that can run outside of Visual Studio IDE so as to be part of a build. Or if that isn't possible can someone provide some guidance as to how to make Visual Studio part of a build process -- by that I mean it would be nice to run the IDE's Sort and Remove unused using statements on all files as part of the build, but even better would be an exe that can read the .sln, or .csproj and do the job as part of build system.   • Data Integration Solution?

    At my company we have a number of data feeds and processing that run on any given day. The number of feeds and processing steps is starting to out-number the ability to manage it ad-hoc as it is managed currently. Is there a good solution that helps with logging and managing/scheduling dependencies? For example: A: When file x is FTP dropped into directory D1, kick off processing step B B: Load flat file into DB1 C: When file y is FTP dropped into directory D2, kick off processing Step D D: Load flat file into DB11 E: When B and D are done, churn through the data, and load new data into DB111. F: When Step E is done, launch application process P G: etc... I want those steps to run at the appropriate times, not to mention if B fails, there's no reason to run steps E & F, but I could still run C & D. When I re-run B successfully, it should trigger just E & F to re-run, not C & D. We're a .NET/C#/Sql Server shop, and I'm already familiar with SSIS. Is that really the best there is? That manages steps well, but not external dependencies, or logging. Open source (.NET) preferred, but not required.

    I want to move my application settings out of XAML and into a config file. For example, ToolTips and Content strings for Buttons/CheckBoxes and Labels. Is this the job of a ResourceDictionary, or should I use the App.Config or Settings.settings file? The ToolTips and Content strings are not really per user, they are more Application wide and may change if the UI is internationalized. Thanks!

  • MySQL datetime fields and daylight savings time -- how do I reference the "extra" hour?

    I'm using the America/New York timezone. In the Fall we "fall back" an hour -- effectively "gaining" one hour at 2am. At the transition point the following happens: it's 01:59:00 -04:00 then 1 minute later it becomes: 01:00:00 -05:00 So if you simply say "1:30am" it's ambiguous as to whether or not you're referring to the first time 1:30 rolls around or the second. I'm trying to save scheduling data to a MySQL database and can't determine how to save the times properly. Here's the problem: "2009-11-01 00:30:00" is stored internally as 2009-11-01 00:30:00 -04:00 "2009-11-01 01:30:00" is stored internally as 2009-11-01 01:30:00 -05:00 This is fine and fairly expected. But how do I save anything to 01:30:00 -04:00? The documentation does not show any support for specifying the offset and, accordingly, when I've tried specifying the offset it's been duly ignored. The only solutions I've thought of involve setting the server to a timezone that doesn't use daylight savings time and doing the necessary transformations in my scripts (I'm using PHP for this). But that doesn't seem like it should be necessary. Many thanks for any suggestions.

    I'm looking for a C# class that represents a file system path. I would like to use it (instead of strings) as the data type of variables and method arguments (top reasons: type safety, concat-proof, logical comparisons). System.IO.Path provides most of the functionality I want, but it is abstract. System.IO.FileInfo, as I understand, performs IO operations to do its job. I only want a wrapper for the path string.     I've just set up a fail-over DNS to switch the site to a second host if the first is down. This is great for showing an old / archived version of the site, but I suspect maintenance is going to be a real pain. I moved the files over with rsync in the first place. Is this the kinda thing that could be run as a cron job, automatically moving over newer files?

    If I'm looking to sell my app in other markets other than the U.S. on both Android and iOS, do I need to do anything inside the app coding-wise? I don't imagine that I need to but I just want to make sure. Also, while I'm at it, how do I collect on international app purchases considering they are in another currency? Will the currency be automatically converted to U.S. dollars or is that my job? Any insight on either of these questions would be greatly appreciated.
