• Best compiled language for Mac OS X and Linux compatibility

  We need to write some software that will compile and run on both an Mac OS X server and Ubuntu. We would love to use Objective-C with all of its Cocoa goodness, however the GNUstep implementations of the parts we are using are broken (in the latest Ubuntu package anyway.) In light of this should we use C++ (I would really rather not), C or something else that we have not thought of? It is a server/back-end process that is very resource intensive, Java and other interpreted versions of this software perform much worse than the Objective-C proof of concept we have written, hence we now wish to re-write in a "compiled[1]" language. (NB: Some people might consider this subjective, however at the end of the day we do need to get a job done, there has to be a reasonably appropriate correct answer here). [1] Compiled to native CPU instructions, not compiled into "byte codes" that then have to be run by an interpreter.

• Mac OS date command - getting higher resolution time

  Hey all, I am trying to use the date command in Terminal on multiple Mac OS X machines that are synced via NTP to synchronize some code in a program. Essentially I am running a program... MyProgram with arguments[date] I can get date to give me the seconds since the Unix epoch with the %M specifier. When I try to use %N to get nanosecond resolution, date just returns N. Is there anyway to get date to give me finer then second resolution? I wouldn't even mind passing two arguments such as (date +%M):arg2 And then converting units in the program. • Restoring Mac-bootcamp-windows-partition image to Windows machine

  Hi, I'm running Windows XP sp3 on my mac using bootcamp. Objective: I'd like to move this partition to a windows machine. This is what I tried: 1. create image using winclone 2. restore drive to disk partition on windows machine using paragon 3. reboot from new partition Results: it attempts to boot in XP (windows flag and progress bar load screen) but then gives me the old BSOD. safe mode just hangs while loading. (I then uninstalled KB977165 on a hunch, but that did nothing to help the issue.) Any ideas, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• Git Status Across Multiple Repositories on a Mac

  I have been searching for a solution to this for a while and have not found quite what I need. I have several Git Repositories in a folder on my Mac (OSX 10.6) and would like a script or tool that will loop through all the repositories and let me know if any of them needs "commit"-ing. This is my structure Sites   /project1   /project2   /project3 I want the tool to do a "git status" in Sites/project1, Sites/project2, Sites/project3 and let me know if Sites/project2 and Sites/project3 have changes or new files and needs to be Staged/committed The closest script I found that might be hackable is here: http://gist.github.com/371828 but even that script wouldn't run and I get an error: "syntax error near unexpected token `do" which might have been written for *nix.

• View plain text files with different background colors in Mac OSX, for different programming languag

  Hi, I work with Mac OS X Leopard. I usually have 5 or 10 text files opened at the same time with different programming languages; one for a bash script, another for a python one, etc. When I use exposé all of them look the same, so it is difficult to select them. I wonder how could I work with just plain text files in OSX, so when they are opened in an editor the background color changes or some other thign, so when using exposé it is clear to me which window belongs to what language. I thought about inserting some kind of info to the last line of each document, and then creat some applescript that converts it to RTF or someother text document which includes color in bacjground, so then it is opened with textmate or someother app. Do you know a better approach for this?   On a previous question the pathinfo and fnmatch functions were benchmarked and the answers all came out opposite to my benchmark results. The results then matched the other users. My main machine is a mac. So, my questions are: Why do we get these two different results? Could this apply to other functions?

  XCode won't open. I had it running fine a couple of weeks ago. Now I get the following error message when XCode tries to open: Internal Error File: /SourceCache/DevToolsBase/.../XCPlatformSpecification.m Line: 438 Object: <XCPlatformSp(ecification> Method: loadAllPlatforms The Mac OS X platform is missing - cannot set a default platform. Any idea what caused this or how I can recover? Changes I have made to my system (Snow Leopard) in the last couple of weeks include (a) allowing Software Update to run and (b) installing Eclipse IDE. But the problem may or may not be related to these changes.

  Using Mac OS X 10.6.2, Eclipse SDK 3.5.2. I installed the Android plugin, following the instructions at: http://developer.android.com/sdk/eclipse-adt.html In the next section (step #3) it says: For the SDK Location in the main panel, click Browse... and locate your downloaded SDK directory. I cannot find such a directory. When I try some other directory, it says the directory has no 'tools' folder, so I've searched for a 'tools' folder, but none of those found (of 15 or 20) appear to be Android. • Cannot load PNG in C# on Mac OSX running Mono

  In C#, I'm trying to load a png file on Mac OSX using the latest Mono using System.Drawing; Bitmap bmp = new Bitmap("test.png"); I get the following error Either the image format is unknown or you don't have the required libraries to decode this format [GDI+ status: UnknownImageFormat] It doesn't happen with all png files; just this one. Resaving in photo shop doesn't fix it unless I switch to 8bpp. Is there something I need to install to support this "special" png file? Works fine on windows.

Password: ... ---> Couldn't open /dev/null: Permission denied this is the output of "ls -l /dev/null": crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 3, 2 May 14 14:10 /dev/null I am in the group wheel, and even if I do "sudo scp..." it doesn't work.   Is there any way to get the content of a webfile (namely a .html Document) using a proxy, which is not defined in the system settings? I know that NSURLConnection is the right way to download a web file into a variable and not into a file (for which we should use NSURLDownload), but I don't find an way to use a proxy for it. Are there some inofficial APIs, Librarys or Classes or such I could use for what I want to do? I'm not that pro in Mac Programming, so im searching for something more or less simple to do for me plz. • Is it possible to run the Android emulator as root from NetBeans on the Mac

  I have installed NetBeans 6.8 on my MacOS (Leopard) system and use the Kenai plugin for this platform to create an Android application. The trouble is that I cannot run the Android emulator from NetBeans logged in to the Mac as a normal user. I can run the emulator from the command line and the Eclipse environment when logged in as root. When I try to run NetBeans as root, it displays a message indicating many of components of the Android plugin cannot be loaded because the root user somehow links to Java 1.5 and the plugin needs Java 1.6. There are 3 solutions to this problem as far as I can see: Make the root user environment link to Java 1.6 and use NetBeans as root. Coerce NetBeans to su to root before running the Emulator. Stick to using Eclipse for Android development. If anyone knows how how to do 1 or 2 I would appreciate getting advice from you. Thanks in advance.

  Hello, I've been trying to "hijack" the Mac OS X system audio using PyAudio and save to a wav in python. That is, I do not want to record from an input device such as a microphone. I want to grab the sound output from any or all applications. I have followed the tutorials on the PyAudio site but these do not appear to cover my use case and when I try to read from the output stream I unsurprisingly get the paCanNotReadFromAnOutputOnlyStream exception. Fair enough! Is there a way to do what I am proposing with the PyAudio or other FOSS Python Library?

• equivalent to getch(), mac/linux crash

  Hey guys. So I am using getch() and my app crashes instantly. Including when doing: int main() { getch(); } I can't find the link but supposedly the problem is, it needs to turn off buffering or something strange along those lines and I still want cout to work along with cross platform code. I was told to use std::cin.get(), but I'd like the app to quit when a key is pressed, not when the user typed in a letter or number then press enter to quit. Is there any function for this? The code must work under Mac (my os) and Windows.

• Can I issue wireless clients with IP address on different subnet?

  We have a very standard setup with a Windows Server 2003 domain controller issuing IP addresses using DHCP. This works fine. Internet access is managed via Microsoft ISA Server 2006 Standard. Clients are required to authenticate and this works fine. We now need to provide wireless internet access to visitors for laptops, iPhones etc. We've bought a couple of Netgear access points so I was thinking we might be able to issue wireless clients connected to it with an IP address on a different subnet and then allow non-authenticated Internet access via the ISA Server for that IP range. Does that sound plausible? I'm not even sure if I can issue a different subnet to wireless clients.

• How should clients handle HTTP 401 with unknown authentication schemes?

  What is the proper behavior for an HTTP client receiving a 401 Unauthorized response that specifies only unrecognized authentication schemes? My server supports Kerberos authentication using WWW-Authenticate: Negotiate. On the first request, the server sends a 401 Unauthorized response with a body containing an HTML document. The behavior that I expect is for clients that support Kerberos to perform that authentication and for other clients to simply display the HTML document (a login form). It seems that most of the "other clients" I've encountered do work this way, but a few do not. I haven't found anything that mandates any particular behavior in this situation. There's a brief mention in RFC 2617: HTTP Authentication: Basic and Digest Access Authentication, but is there anything more concrete? It is possible that a server may want to require Digest as its authentication method, even if the server does not know that the client supports it. A client is encouraged to fail gracefully if the server specifies only authentication schemes it cannot handle.

• Which GPO is making my Domain Controller my clients' DNS server?

  I maintain a small domain (about 20 clients) and we need to make some changes to the DNS server that's being used by the clients. All the clients have been hard coded to use the domain controller as their DNS. Since these are new machines, and I never changed their DNS settings, I'm guessing there must be a GPO that's causing them to use the domain controller as their DNS. Since we don't have any GPO other than the default one yet, it's got to be the default GPO, however, I have looked through all the GPO settings and none of them refer to anything related to DNS. So I'm wondering if there's anything else that might be causing this. Any help or advice is highly appreciated. Thanks, Harry

• Ubuntu: On a network with many clients there are two machines that can't access the web via a browser at the same time

  Ok I'm pulling my hair out over this one. We have a wireless network with many clients all working well except two Ubuntu clients running 10.10 that can't access the internet via a browser at the same time. They can both still ping, use Skype etc but can't browse. As soon as the one that can browse exits the network browsing returns for the other and vice versa. As ping and Skype was working I assumed some kind of DNS problem but moving over to OpenDNS didn't solve it, nor did restarting networking or using wired rather than wireless. We also switched out the router, and it still persisted so I'm sure this isn't a network issue. The two clients are both laptops and work fine together on a wireless network at another office (which we don't control). I'm thinking something must be cached from the other network they both use that's causing this but have no idea what. Does anyone have any ideas? I just don't know where to go from here.

• Best format for hard drive for Windows and Mac?

  I have a 500 GB USB External Hard Drive. I need four partitions on it, for the following purposes: 160 GB for a bootable backup of my Mac. 160 GB for a bootable backup of my Windows. 11 GB for a bootable Snow Leopard Install Disk Rest as for file storage. Now I need a partition table which will get recognised on both Windows and Mac, without needing extra software on Windows, which will let me keep bootable copies of both OS'es, but let me access the file storage from both OS'es. Currently, I have a GUI Partition Table, with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Partitions for the two backups, Mac OS Extended for the Install Disk, and NTFS for the file storage. While this gets recognised perfectly on my Mac, thanks to an NTFS for Mac driver from Paragon, when connected to Windows, the drive is detected by the machine (listed in Safely Remove USB), but not recognised in Windows Explorer unless I install MacDrive, which is not feasible for me to install on public Windows Machines I might wanna access my storage area on. Can someone recommend the best combination of formats and software/drivers to get this done seamlessly?

  I've been having problems with a MySQL Server installation that got messed up after a power outage. Configuration Intel i5 Mac running OS X 10.6.5 Ruby 1.9.2 installed Rails 3.0.1 installed MySQL Server (finally) installed and running I completely reinstalled MySQL, which deleted the local development/test/production databases. So, I have run create database development; in MySQL to get the dev database ready for a migration. Current Goal Run rake db:migrate to get my databases back again. (I cannot currently access my databases or Mysql at all from Rails.)
