• Serverlocation moved and how can I Move the files

  Hello together, I´ve a big problem. I have to move data from an old Webspace which is only accessibla by ftp. No we have a new root server which is accessible by ssh of course :-) No i Need to move all data from the old space but there is a lot of Gb of files. Is there a way to fetch all files directly from the old ftp to the storage and not over a third station (my local machine)? I´ve tried it with ftp but without success. I think I´ve used the wrong commands. Is there a way to etablish something like this including all files and directorys? Thank you in advance Bernhard

• Fast, reliable data transfers from/to China

  We are a small company and we will need to transfer rather large amounts of data (10GB+ each time) between Europe and China in the near future. As many may have experienced, Internet connections to or from China can be rather unreliable and slow at times without any apparent reason. For example, while sending data to China via FTP generally works well, it can be painfully slow in the other direction. Currently, we are investigating new ways to have high transfer rates in both directions. So far we have tried: FTP (see above) FTP over VPN services (generally slower than direct connections) F2F (like Retroshare or Freenet - slow!!) Aspera (fast but expensive!) BitTorrent (unreachable end nodes, b/c of firewalls which we must not configure) We would like to try: Cloud storage (e.g. Amazon S3, Google Storage) - are those services always and reliably reachable from inside China? Point-to-Point VPN (currently not possible, b/c of the network, see above) I'd be especially grateful to hear from people who have already dealt with this kind of problem before.

  Hi guys, Suppose I have a server accessible via FTP and it hosts websites Suppose I want to edit the website locally so it wont affect the site live, and suppose I edit a whole bunch of files, and I don't want to deal with the hassle of keeping track of which files I've edited all the time... Once I finished editing I want to upload it to the server via FTP....is there some FTP software that automatically detects which files have been edited and have only those files uploaded and overwritten rather than having me manually choosing the files I've edited (and hence having to keep track of edited files) or have me upload the entire site which is a waste of time thanks in advance

  I have a webserver that we are giving a consultant FTP access to. For one domain hosted on that server he needs access to a "dev" directory and for a different domain hosted on that server he needs access to a different directory. I am trying to set this up with VirtualHosts, but I am having issues. Here is the VirtualHost bit of my proftpd.conf file: <VirtualHost www.example2.com> ServerName "Example 2" DefaultRoot /var/www/example2/dev </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost www.example1.com> ServerName "Example 1" DefaultServer on DefaultRoot /var/www/example1 </VirtualHost> When I FTP to either domain I always get the first VirtualHost, even if I FTP to the second domain.

  I need FTP on my local LAN so my scanner can send me scans. I am on Debian sid. I installed ftpd and created the user anonymous. I removed anonymous from /etc/ftpusers When I try to login as anonymous it says: login failed. I can't seem to find any log file. I'm using FTP server (Version 6.4/OpenBSD/Linux-ftpd-0.17) update:I needed that so my printer had one place to store my scanned documents on the LAN. solved that buying a dedicated USB pen drive (thankfully I bought a printer one with plenty of options) but in the past this was a very simple task. Install ftpd, specify the directory for anonymous access, and be done with it. now every ftp daemon has several layers of security and chroot in it's core... this is just crazy when all you need a place for a printer to dump files in a secured network.

• Upload large database SQL file

  I've a database of more than 20Gb of size on my hard disk. What is the best way to upload it with the least (money) load possible on the server? - I'm on Windows 7. - I have FTP and SSH access on the server. I avoid using FTP because my connection cuts off a lot, I can't imagine I re-upload again the file after failing on 99%. I found some tools that split the large .sql file to small .sql files, but they didn't mention how to gather these files again into one file. Another way is to archive the big .sql file to .rar with -v option, upload them through FTP then unpack them. But unpacking will also cost, right? I know it will cost in any cases, but any best practice will be strongly appreciated.

• Emacs: Prevent TRAMP connection closing

  I'm using emacs with TRAMP ( C-x C-f /ftp:[email protected]:/ ), and randomly, sometimes ten minutes, sometimes, ~12 seconds (no exaggerating) my connection will close (I think). I'll try to type, or list a dir, and it will say "Opening FTP connection to site.com...". Is there a way to tell it to just keep the connection open until I exit? Or is it the webserver killing the connection? I'm just using standard FTP. Thanks.

When I tried to set it to 777 i got the following error, when i tried to log in. 500 OOPS: vsftpd: refusing to run with writeable anonymous root login failed. Do i need to set up anything else to allow READ/WRITE for anonymous?

  Hi all, I worked with C# for years. Last year, I changed my job and the company use VB.NET. Of course, theoretically C# and VB.NET are very similar and I easily adapted. However, I have worked for VB.NET for 1 year. I cannot see any future of VB.NET. As a programming language, it is so foo. Here is a list of what C# can do but VB.NET cannot Case insensitive variables how to think a new variable name? If I have a property called FolderPath, i need to establish another private variable called _folderPath or m_folderPath. In C#, FolderPath and folderPath are two variables. Moreover, it gets compile error if variable name is same as a class name. For example Dim guid = Guid.NewGuid(). (What the...) Again, I need to think a new variable name. Adhoc scope In C#, we could use {...} to create a adhoc scope and all resource in {...} will not affect the code outside. However there is not such syntax in VB.NET. I could only use If True Then and End If to make a local scope which is so unclear. In-Method Region Sometime, it is unavoidable to have a long long method. VB.NET does not support in-method region. I always need to scroll down for 1000 lines. It wastes my time. No multi-line string definition In C#, we could var s = @"..." to define a multi-line string. In VB.NET there is no direct method to do that. The indirect way is use XML-literal string. Dim s = <![CDATA[...]]>.Value. However it is unclear. No block comment In C#, we have line comment // and block comment /* ... */. However in VB.NET we only have line comment which is a very big trouble for me. No statement end symbol Statements are separated by line break in VB.NET; while statements are separated by ; in C#. Underscore I think many people know underscore _ is continue statement symbol. I really disagree with that. I know MS VB.NET language team is going to remove the underscore syntax from VB.NET. However what can we do now? Although underscore is removed in the future, what's the advantage of that? I cannot see any advantage! With scope With scope is an evil scope. Although it allows shorter statement, it is hard to trace. Default Namesapce in project level It is a nightmare for me. The only advantage of VB.NET is property initialization. I think C# cannot do that (correct me if I am wrong.) Public Property ThisIsMyProperty As String = "MyValue" Remarks: I don't think optional method parameters is an advantage of OOP. By those disadvantages, I cannot see the future of VB.NET. Anyone sees the future of VB.NET?

  I created a WCF service (.NET 3.5) that grabs data from a db and returns a list of objects. It works just fine. I tested it using the WCFTestClient application and got the desired results. Now, I tried to create an ASP.NET web application and consume the service. After enabling <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="true"/> in the config file, the error message is "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." How do I modify the service to work with ASP.NET? Thanks!

• Should I use WPF or ASP.NET for my next Web Application development?

  We have a web application that has been built using MySQL / PHP / Javascript+JQuery, with server-side HTML generation. The problem is that of the 10 software developers that work for the company, none are PHP experts (we're all .NET / C# developers). I need to make a recommendation to my management team on which technologies to use as the platform for the next generation of web application products. I want to leverage the .NET / C# expertise which the company has and is otherwise building, and so am inclined to recommend some Microsoft technologies. We don't want a client-side plugin, and we don't need flashy animations/multimedia, so I'm ruling out Silverlight. Is WPF ready for primetime? Is ASP.NET deprecated by WPF? How do I choose between these two technologies? Big Question, I know... I can refine it based on your comments if necessary. Thanks for taking the time.

  I know a bunch of people that are really enjoying the improvements that ASP.NET MVC 2 made over the first release. I have just started to migrate our MVC 1 project over and so far areas has totally cleaned up the subfolder mess we had in our large scale application. As I dive deeper into all the improvements and changes that were made I still keep thinking to myself man it would be nice if they had x in this release. For isntance, I would love it if they had some sort of dependency injection built in instead of having to use third party solutions. My real question is now that ASP.NET MVC 2 is out in the wild, what features do want/wish the team had implemented and hope they will implement for ASP.NET MVC 3?

• Update image in ASP.NET page from memory without refreshing the page.

  I have a command line C# server and an ASP.NET client, they both communicate via .NET Remoting. The server is sending the client still images grabbed from a webcam at say 2 frames a second. I can pass the images down to the client via a remote method call and the image ends up in this client method: public void Update(System.Drawing.Image currentFrame) { // I need to display the currentFrame on my page. } How do i display the image on the a page without saving the image to the hard disc? If it was a winForms app i could pass currentFrame to a picturebox ie. picturebox.Image = currentFrame. The above Update method gets fired at least 2 times a second. If the client was a winForms app i could simply put picturebox.Image = currentFrame and the current frame on the screen would automatically get updated. How do i achieve the same effect with ASP.NET? Will the whole page need to be reloaded etc?

• Force NCover 1.5.8 to use v4 framework like testdriven.net does?

  I want to run coverage from the command line, but can't seem to get NCover 1.5.8 to instrument the code. It must be possible as when I run coverage tests with TestDriven.net it works. the difference seems to be that TD.NET is able to get NCover to use framework 4.0 (you get this in the log when it runs : MESSAGE: v4.0.30319) but from the command line I can't make it (I get this in the log : MESSAGE: v2.0.50727) So how can I make NCover play nice with nunit from the commandline, like it does with TD.NET?

  Is it generally a really bad idea to not use the built-in asp.net membership provider? I've always rolled my own for my asp.net apps (public facing), and really have not had any problems in doing so. It works, and seems to avoid a layer of complexity. My needs are pretty basic: once setup, the user must use email address and password to login, if they forget it, it will be emailed back to them (a new one). After setup there is little that needs to be done to each user account, but I do need to store several extra fields with each user (full name, telephone and a few other fields etc). The number of users that required login credentials are small (usually just the administrator and a few backups), and everyone else uses the site unauthenticated. What are the big advantages that I might be missing out on by skipping the asp.net membership provider functionality?

• How to make one ASP.NET MVC site "derive" from another.

  My question is similar to "ASP.NET 2 projects to share same files", but with an ASP.NET MVC slant. Basically, we have two sites, one being based mostly on the other (roughly 90% views, controllers, images, in the second are identical to the first). However, in some cases, the views may be different, or a controller in the second site may be different to the first. Are there any simple ways of achieving this in ASP.NET MVC? So far, we've looked at using linked files to have two totally seperate projects where the second project shares the files it needs from the first. One problem with this approach is that most pages in the second project don't literally exist in the virtual directory, it makes debugging a pain - you have to publish in order to generate the files so you can debug. Does anyone have any better approaches, or ways this approach can be simplified?

• Ubuntu web server 11.10 ftp/server issue

  I was wondering if I could get some help with FTP, atleast I'm pretty sure it has to do with FTP. Although it could have to do with something else, I'm not 100% sure.. Now, for fare warning, I'm no ubuntu dominator, I'm pretty newb. Anyway, I've attempted to build a webserver to to test php and what not for a site I'm building. Now everything works, the php, the sql etc. By the way, I built this in VMware, so it's virtual, over a network, so I can access stuff from anywhere. I'm in a college right now so yeah. The one problem I have is this. I go into the terminal, and do ifconfig to find my IP. I get it and go to a browser on a different machine and type that IP in. I get the "index of/" page, where I can browse the website I'm making. I can click through folders and what not. I can click on things and they open up. Now lets say I'm working on my desktop and open up an FTP and drag and drop something into there, go to the IP in the browser again and try to open it. I either get "Server error The website encountered an error while retrieving http://my_server_ip/phpinfo.php. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly. Here are some suggestions: Reload this webpage later." or "Forbidden You don't have permission to access /html.html on this server." But, lets say I make it on the server itself, and try, bam, magic it works. I'm sure I set the permissions to let everyone open and view the files, but maybe I didn't? I'm not sure, and this is where I was hoping I could get some help. By the way, I followed a tutorial on changing the www folder (apache) from /var/www to home/"user"/www. I can't recall how I did that, but it's there and my ftp goes to the home/"user"/www folder. But yeah, any and all help is appreciated. Like I said, I'm really new to this, but I do enjoy attempting to make these servers and learning how they work, so it's not like making this webserver is a project for a class, It's just assisting me in testing stuff for another class and possibly other websites later on down the road.   In What would you choose for your project between .NET and Java at this point in time? I say that I would consider the "Will you always deploy to Windows?" the single most important (EDIT: technical) decision to make up front in a new web project, and if the answer is "no", I would recommend Java instead of .NET. A very common counter-argument is that "If we ever want to run on Linux/OS X/Whatever, we'll just run Mono", which is a very compelling argument on the surface, but I don't agree for several reasons. OpenJDK and all the vendor supplied JVM's have passed the official Sun TCK ensuring things work correctly. I am not aware of Mono passing a Microsoft TCK. Mono trails the .NET releases. What .NET-level is currently fully supported? Does all GUI elements (WinForms?) work correctly in Mono? Businesses may not want to depend on Open Source frameworks as the official plan B. I am aware that with the new governance of Java by Oracle, the future is unsafe, but e.g. IBM provides JDK's for many platforms, including Linux. They are just not open sourced. So, under which circumstances is Mono a valid business strategy for .NET-applications? Edit: Mark H summarized it as: "If the claim is that "I have a windows application written in .NET, it should run on mono", then not, it's not a valid claim - but Mono has made efforts to make porting such applications simpler.".

  Trying to get an MVC2 website to run on Apache 2.2 web server (running on Windows) that utilizes the mod_aspdotnet module. Have several ASP.NET Virtual Hosts running, trying to add another. MVC2 has NO default page (like the first version of MVC had e.g default.aspx). I have tried various changes to the config: commented out 'DirectoryIndex', changed it to '/'. Set 'ASPNET' to 'Virtual', will not load first page, always get: '403 Forbidden, You don't have permission to access / on this server.'   I've got a saucy server with a lot of NICs and they end up with weird names like "rename19". I know interface names can be changed by modifying the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file. The first clue that something is wrong is that that file did not exist even though it's supposed to be created automatically. After rebooting, nothing has changed. It's like these rules aren't even being read.
