• url with question mark considered as new http request?

  I am optimization my web page by implementing caching, so if I want the browser not to take data from cache, then I will append a dynamic number as query value. eg: google.com?val=823746 But some time, if I want to bring data from cache for the below url, the browser is making a new http request to server, its not taking data from cache. Is that because of the question mark in URL ? eg: http://google.com? Please provide some reference document link. Thanks in advance. Regards, Navin

  I have a db, that stores dates in OleDateTime format, in GMT timezone. I've implemented a class, extending Date in java to represent that in classic date format. But my class is locale-dependent (I'm in GMT+2). Therefore, it converts the date in the db as date - 2 hours. How do I make it convert the date correctly? I want my class to be locale-independent, always using GMT timezone. I do not really know if this is scientifically proven, but I've read in a book (It was a relatively modern AI book by Peter Norvig) that secon-order logical programming could be more expressive than existing first-order languages. The question is: Is it statistically/symbolically proven that higher-order predicate logics exceed first-order predicates in their expressive power? Or they just bring the modularity/convenience/maintainability to your knowledge bases? Additionally: If there is some kind of firm direction in which I could go seeking more expressive power than I have (I mean exactly the descriptive potential of the symbols I write in given semantics/syntax) - then I would be glad to hear just almost everything :) Thank you.

• Lock Question - When is an Update (U) lock issued?

  We are trying to resolve a deadlock problem. The transaction that is getting rolled back is attempting to issue an Update (U) lock on a resource that another transaction has an Exclusive (X) lock on. According to Books Online (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175519.aspx), an Update lock is supposed to prevent deadlocks, not cause them. So, my question is, why/when is an Update lock applied to a resource? We're a little confused about this because the resource that is attempting to have the Update lock applied to will not be updated by the process that is having the transaction rolled back.   A friend of mine was asked the following question today at interview for the position of software developer. Given two string s1 and s2 how will you check if s1 is a rotated version of s2 ? Example: if s1 = "stackoverflow"; then the following are some of its rotated versions: "tackoverflows" "ackoverflowst" "overflowstack" where as "stackoverflwo" is not a rotated version. The answer he gave was: Take s2 and find the logest prefix that is a substring of s1, that will give you the point of rotation. Once you find that point, break s2 at that point to get s2a and s2b, then just check if concatenate(s2a,s2b) == s1 It looks like a good solution to me and my friend. But the interviewr though otherwise. He asked for a simpler solution. Please help me by telling how would you do this in Java/C/C++ ? Thanks in advance.

• Style question: Writing "this." before instance variable and methods: good or bad idea?

  One of my nasty (?) programming habits in C++ and Java is to always precede calls or accesses to members with a this. For example: this.process(this.event). A few of my students commented on this, and I'm wondering if I am teaching bad habits. My rationale is: 1) Makes code more readable — Easier to distinguish fields from local variables. 2) Makes it easier to distinguish standard calls from static calls (especially in Java) 3) Makes me remember that this call (unless the target is final) could end up on a different target, for example in an overriding version in a subclass. Obviously, this has zero impact on the compiled program, it's just readability. So am I making it more or less readable? Related Question Note: I turned it into a CW since there really isn't a correct answer.

I want to build an invoice web application, an invoice can have many items, and each user can have an inventory list of product items that they can store and choose to add to an invoice item. My questions are: 1. Should I store all product inventory for all users using my application under one single table? Or have a separate product inventory table created for each user? 2. Is this even possible? 1 table is easier, but what if this single table grows too big, will I have a problem? (primary key INT).

  I've been bored lately and I want to start a new project. I was looking at a website mentioned in a different question (http://www.grapevinegame.com/), and I thought the map and how it plots a point based on someone's IP (I assume) is pretty nifty. I want to do something like that, but I have no idea how it's done. I know you can get latitude and longitude, city and state, and some more with some already-written scripts, but how would you plot those on a map of the world? I've seen it other places, like Google Analytics and such, as well. It seems like a neat thing to be able to do, so I was just wondering how exactly it works. :-p.

  Under WindowsCE, C++ project, I'm trying to work with devices connected via both "real" serial ports and/or serial-to-usb wrappers ("virtual" serial ports); my problem is - when I try to open the port, if something goes wrong, the function never returns and the system goes into some non-responsive state and has to be eventually rebooted. I need to open the ports from the main thread.   stack overflow wont let me post images so heres the link: http://4m0.org/images/qt.png This is my application. For this question, ignore the top part with the buttons. I have a QScrollArea Filled with many QGroupBoxes Filled with a horizontal box layout of QLabel (on the left) and QGroupBox (on the right) The right side is a vertical box layout of QPushButtons Every single element, the scrollarea, both boxes, the labels, and the buttons all have their style sheets modified so padding is 0px and margin is 0px. Why do i have all this extra space? The scroll area has space on all sides until its inner elements (the blue boxes) start. Then those boxes have space until its inner elements (the white boxes) start. Can someone tell me what is going on?

• Beginner servlet question: accessing files in a .war, which path?

  When a third-party library I'm using tries to access a file, I'm getting "Error opening ... file ... (No such file or directory)" even though I KNOW the file is in the WAR. I've tried both packaged (.war) and "exploded" (directory) deployment, and the file is definitely there. I've tried setting full permissions on it too. It's on Unix (Ubuntu). File is war/dict/index.sense and the error is "dict/index.sense (No such file or directory)". It works fine on my Windows computer when running in hosted mode as a GWT app from Eclipse, just not when I transfer it to the Unix machine for deployment. My question is: has anybody experienced this before and/or are there differences in relative path that I should consider i.e. what's the root path for relative file access in a war?

I think it shouldn't use more that a few #times the memory required to hold (16384*8192) int32's (512 mb), but #it uses 11 GB! for k in topKeys: for j in keys: dat[k,j] = table[k][j] print "done" What is going on here? Furthermore, this similar script takes eons to run compared to the first one, and also uses an absurd quantity of memory. topKeys = range(16384) keys = range(8192) table = [(j,0) for k in topKeys for j in keys] I guess python ints might be 64 bit ints, which would account for some of this, but do these relatively natural and simple constructions really produce such a massive overhead? I guess these scripts show that they do, so my question is: what exactly is causing the high memory usage in the first script and the long runtime and high memory usage of the second script and is there any way to avoid these costs?

• RESTful API design question - how should one allow users to create new resource instances?

  I'm working in a research group where we intend to publish implementations of some of the algorithms we develop on the web via a RESTful API. Most of these algorithms work on small to medium size datasets, and in many cases, a user of our services might want to run multiple queries (with different parameters) on the same dataset, so for me it seems reasonable to allow users to upload their datasets in advance and refer to them in their queries later. In this sense, a dataset could be a resource in my API, and an algorithm could be another. My question is: how should I let the users upload their own datasets? I cannot simply let users upload their data to /dataset/dataset_id as letting the users invent their own dataset_ids might result in ID collision and users overwriting each other's datasets by accident. (I believe one of the most frequently used dataset ID would be test). I think an ideal way would be to have a dedicated URL (like /dataset/upload) where users can POST their datasets and the response would contain a unique ID under which the dataset was stored, but I'm not sure that it does not violate the basic principles of REST. What is the preferred way of dealing with such scenarios?

Question - comment - comment - comment Answer -comment Answer -comment -comment -comment Answer -comment -comment So, I'm imagining a very high level understanding of this type of system (in PHP, not .Net as I am not yet familiar with .Net) would be like: $question = new Question; $question->load($this_question_id); // from the URL probably echo $question->getTitle(); To load the answers, I imagine it's something like this ("A"): $answers = new Answers; $answers->loadFromQuestion($question->getID()); // or $answers->loadFromQuestion($this_question_id); while($answer = $answers->getAnswer()) { echo $answer->showFormatted(); } Or, would you do ("B"): $answers->setQuestion($question); // inject the whole obj, so we have access to all the data and public methods in $question $answers->loadFromQuestion(); // the ID would be found via $this->question->getID() instead of from the argument passed in while($answer = $answers->getAnswer()) { echo $answer->showFormatted(); } I guess my problem is, I don't know when or if I should be passing in an entire object, and when I should just be passing in a value. Passing in the entire object gives me a lot of flexibility, but it's more memory and subject to change, I'd guess (like a property or method rename). • CSS Design question, I've got myself completely turned around.

  Okay, I have a couple of other questions out there, but I think I'd better just ask from the beginning how you CSS experts would do this. Client's page is split into 2 rows -- header has some info, some aligned to left of page, some to right, some in the middle. This is currently done using a table. I'm fine with leaving this alone or changing it. My real question is that I need a page layout to handle the following: 2 columns - column on left is 200px, but can be "close" down to to 10px (not a slider, it's either 200 or 10 px). The column on the right needs to be as big as it needs to be -- which might be larger than the width of the page. When left column is "closed" then the right column slides over of course. Again, this right column might be 300px or it might be 4000 pixels (it's a reporting interface). Now, to add another wrinkle, SOME pages have 3 columns. The first 2 columns are each exactly 200px, and both can be "closed" down to 10 px each. But, the user may not close both columns, maybe just 1. Or none. Or both. The third column needs to act just like I described above, being able to be larger than the page width, and sliding over to take advantage of any of the "closed" left columns. Whew! I'm pretty confused as to how to go about this, as either I get it right but I can't scroll over to the right at all (overflow: hidden) and information is lost, or the right column jumps down below the left 2 columns and just looks plain stupid. My minimum browser requirements are IE8, FF3.5, Chrome and Safari (latest versions of all). Any and all pointers are gladly accepted.

• How Can I Create Reports in a Custom C#.NET Windows Application? - General Question

  Assume i have a custom Windows application written in C#. This application has only the following functionalists, add, edit, delete and view. For example, a user can add a sale, change sales record, delete a sale record or view the whole sales record. I need to add some reporting functionalists e.g. i want a user to print the sales of a certain customer from 2008 to 2009 into pdf, what all products a certain customer has purchased from us and so on. I will only include the basic common report requests that are usually needed in the office. Any other kind of reports that are requested inconsistently, i would do it manually from my side at the back end and send the results manually to the requester. What i would do is: If a user wants more info of a certain customer, a special window box appears for that customer. This window box will have different controls that allows user to request more info such as, print customer purchases from ..... to ..... (user chooses the dates) and user will view results in pdf or so. Of course, at the back scene i will write an appropriate SQL Query with parameters that meets a certain function. Is this how it should be done? I have heard about SQL Reporting, i don't know anything about it yet. I will check it out. Anyhow, your suggestions won't harm. I'm still a student, so i don't have practical experience yet. I hope my question is clear enough. Thank you.
