• What is controlling the desktop display?

  I have two Ubuntu systems and in the course of changing configurations something has become muddled. I have disabled Unity in favor of gnome shell, the older style display of the desktop. Then I installed xfce 4. Seemed everything would be working okay, and for the most part it does. Except I noticed that on one system there's something else controlling settings. On one, if I right click the desktop, I get the menu with the options: open in new window create launcher... create url link... create folder... create from template -> open terminal here paste desktop settings... properties... applications -> On system two, right clicking brings up the menu: Create new folder Create new document -> organize desktop by name keep aligned paste Change Desktop Background Additionally, even though I set the background with the xfce settings manager, on system two that background will appear for a few seconds before it's replaced by something that looks like a background from Ubuntu's original desktop. And it's being controlled by what comes up with the "change desktop background" when right clicking, which isn't the xfce settings manager. On the first system, that right click does bring up the xfce settings tool. In short, something is controlling/overriding the xfce settings on machine two, but I can't find what file or configuration tool is doing it. How can I get system two to behave as system one, giving control of settings and configuration of X to XFCE's tools?

• Keyboard locking up in Visual Studio 2010, Part 2

  Last week I posted about looking into the keyboard locking up issue in Visual Studio.  So far it looks like not a lot of people have replied to provide concrete repro steps, which confirms my suspicion that this is somewhat of a random issue. So at this point, I have a couple of choices.  I can either wait for somebody in the community to provide a repro of the problem that I can reliably run into, or I can do the work myself. I’m going to do both, so while I’m waiting for more possible bug reports, I’m going to write a tool that models the behavior of a typical Visual Studio user and use that to hopefully isolate the problem. I’ve chosen to go with this path since given the information in the bug reports, it seems people hit the issue with many different configurations in many different scenarios.  This means that me sitting down without any solid repro steps is likely not going to be a good use of time.  Instead, I’m going to go with a model-based testing approach where I will define a series of actions that a user in VS can do, and then proceed to run my model.  I’ll let you guys know how this works out for isolating bugs :) I’m using an internal tool for the model engine and AutoIt for the UI automation (I want something lightweight for a one-off).  One of the challenges will be getting feedback: AutoIt is great at driving, but not so great at understanding what success and failure means.

In response to all the recent and unfortunate high-profile security breaches LastPass has rolled out Sentry–a tool that monitors breach lists to notify you if your email appears in a list of breached accounts. The lists are supplied by PwnedList, a massive database of security breach data, and securely indexed against your accounts within the LastPass system. If there is a security breach and your email is on the list, you’ll receive an automated email notice indicating which website was compromised and that your email address was one of the positive matches from the breach list. • Technical development decision for my newly established software company

  I have a new software company where I am planning to develop CRM system. So I have settled down on the technological approach I am going to use:- I will use an open source Java-based CRM engine. I will use a third party reporting tool named JasperReports for providing reports capabilities for the CRM. I will develop the interface and any customization which the customer might ask for using asp.net mvc framework since my knowledge and experience are based on asp.net. And I will use the CRM API to integrate my asp.net web application with the Java-based CRM. I have developed a simple demo which integrate these three main components (CRM engine, asp.net application and the reporting tool) and they worked well. But I am afraid of the following risk that I might face if I go with the above approach: I should hire developers with different skills and experience: Developers with Java skills to be able to modify the Java-based CRM and writing plug-ins -when needed- to extend the CRM capabilities. Other developers with asp.net skills to be able to build the application such as application forms, the portal from where users will be able to start the CRM processes, searching capabilities, etc. So might the above point raise some risks when I start hiring a new team and start building the CRM application, OR I am on the right track at this early stage?

• Application Lifecycle Management Tools

  Leading a team comprised of three former teams means that we have three of everything.  Three places to gather requirements, three (actually eight or nine) places for customers to submit support requests, three places to plan and track work. We’ve been looking into tools that combine these features into a single product.  Not just Agile planning tools, but those that allow us to look in a single place for requirements, work items, and reports. One of the interesting choices is Software Planner by Automated QA (the makers of Test Complete).  It's a lovely tool with real end-to-end process support.  We’re probably not going to use it for one reason – cost.  I’m sure our company could get a discount, but it’s on a concurrent user license that isn’t cheap for a large number of users.  Some initial guesswork had us paying over $6,000 for 3 concurrent users just to get started with the Enterprise version.  Still, it’s intuitive, has great Agile capabilities, and has a reputation for excellent customer support. At the moment we’re digging deeper into Rational Team Concert by IBM.  Reading the docs on this product makes me want to submit my resume to Big Blue.  Not only does RTC integrate everything we need, but it’s free for up to 10 developers.  It has beautiful support for all phases of Scrum.  We’re going to bring the sales representative in for a demo. This marks one of the few times that we’re trying to resist the temptation to write our own tool.  And I think this is the first time that something so complex may actually be capably provided by an external source.   Hooray for less work! • How do I measure performance of a virtual server?

  I've got a VPS running Ubuntu. Being a virtual server, I understand that it shares resources with unknown number of other servers, and I'm noticing that it's considerably slower than my desktop machine. Is there some tool to measure the performance of the virtual machine? I'd be curious to see some approximate measure similar to bogomips, possibly for CPU (operations/sec), memory and disk read/write speed. I'd like to be able to compare those numbers to my desktop machine. I'm not interested in the specs of the actual physical machine my VPS is running on - by doing cat /proc/cpuinfo I can see that it's a nice quad-core Xeon machine, but it doesn't matter to me. I'm basically interested in how fast a program would run in my VPS - how many CPU operations it can make in a second, how many bytes to write to RAM or to disk. I only have ssh access to the machine so the tool need to be command-line. I could write a script which, say, does some calculations in a loop for a second and counts how many loops it was able to do, or something similar to measure disk and RAM performance. But I'm sure something like this already exists.

• Get Started using Build-Deploy-Test Workflow with TFS 2012

  TFS 2012 introduces a new type of Lab environment called Standard Environment. This allows you to setup a full Build Deploy Test (BDT) workflow that will build your application, deploy it to your target machine(s) and then run a set of tests on that server to verify the deployment. In TFS 2010, you had to use System Center Virtual Machine Manager and involve half of your IT department to get going. Now all you need is a server (virtual or physical) where you want to deploy and test your application. You don’t even have to install a test agent on the machine, TFS 2012 will do this for you! Although each step is rather simple, the entire process of setting it up consists of a bunch of steps. So I thought that it could be useful to run through a typical setup.I will also link to some good guidance from MSDN on each topic. High Level Steps Install and configure Visual Studio 2012 Test Controller on Target Server Create Standard Environment Create Test Plan with Test Case Run Test Case Create Coded UI Test from Test Case Associate Coded UI Test with Test Case Create Build Definition using LabDefaultTemplate 1. Install and Configure Visual Studio 2012 Test Controller on Target Server First of all, note that you do not have to have the Test Controller running on the target server. It can be running on another server, as long as the Test Agent can communicate with the test controller and the test controller can communicate with the TFS server. If you have several machines in your environment (web server, database server etc..), the test controller can be installed either on one of those machines or on a dedicated machine. To install the test controller, simply mount the Visual Studio Agents media on the server and browse to the vstf_controller.exe file located in the TestController folder. Run through the installation, you might need to reboot the server since it installs .NET 4.5. When the test controller is installed, the Test Controller configuration tool will launch automatically (if it doesn’t, you can start it from the Start menu). Here you will supply the credentials of the account running the test controller service. Note that this account will be given the necessary permissions in TFS during the configuration. Make sure that you have entered a valid account by pressing the Test link. Also, you have to register the test controller with the TFS collection where your test plan is located (and usually the code base of course) When you press Apply Settings, all the configuration will be done. You might get some warnings at the end, that might or might not cause a problem later. Be sure to read them carefully.   For more information about configuring your test controllers, see Setting Up Test Controllers and Test Agents to Manage Tests with Visual Studio 2. Create Standard Environment Now you need to create a Lab environment in Microsoft Test Manager. Since we are using an existing physical or virtual machine we will create a Standard Environment. Open MTM and go to Lab Center. Click New to create a new environment Enter a name for the environment. Since this environment will only contain one machine, we will use the machine name for the environment (TargetServer in this case) On the next page, click Add to add a machine to the environment. Enter the name of the machine (TargetServer.Domain.Com), and give it the Web Server role. The name must be reachable both from your machine during configuration and from the TFS app tier server. You also need to supply an account that is a local administration on the target server. This is needed in order to automatically install a test agent later on the machine. On the next page, you can add tags to the machine. This is not needed in this scenario so go to the next page. Here you will specify which test controller to use and that you want to run UI tests on this environment. This will in result in a Test Agent being automatically installed and configured on the target server. The name of the machine where you installed the test controller should be available on the drop down list (TargetServer in this sample). If you can’t see it, you might have selected a different TFS project collection. Press Next twice and then Verify to verify all the settings: Press finish. This will now create and prepare the environment, which means that it will remote install a test agent on the machine. As part of this installation, the remote server will be restarted. 3-5. Create Test Plan, Run Test Case, Create Coded UI Test I will not cover step 3-5 here, there are plenty of information on how you create test plans and test cases and automate them using Coded UI Tests. In this example I have a test plan called My Application and it contains among other things a test suite called Automated Tests where I plan to put test cases that should be automated and executed as part of the BDT workflow. For more information about Coded UI Tests, see Verifying Code by Using Coded User Interface Tests   6. Associate Coded UI Test with Test Case OK, so now we want to automate our Coded UI Test and have it run as part of the BDT workflow. You might think that you coded UI test already is automated, but the meaning of the term here is that you link your coded UI Test to an existing Test Case, thereby making the Test Case automated. And the test case should be part of the test suite that we will run during the BDT. Open the solution that contains the coded UI test method. Open the Test Case work item that you want to automate. Go to the Associated Automation tab and click on the “…” button. Select the coded UI test that you corresponds to the test case: Press OK and the save the test case For more information about associating an automated test case with a test case, see How to: Associate an Automated Test with a Test Case 7. Create Build Definition using LabDefaultTemplate Now we are ready to create a build definition that will implement the full BDT workflow. For this purpose we will use the LabDefaultTemplate.11.xaml that comes out of the box in TFS 2012. This build process template lets you take the output of another build and deploy it to each target machine. Since the deployment process will be running on the target server, you will have less problem with permissions and firewalls than if you were to remote deploy your solution. So, before creating a BDT workflow build definition, make sure that you have an existing build definition that produces a release build of your application. Go to the Builds hub in Team Explorer and select New Build Definition Give the build definition a meaningful name, here I called it MyApplication.Deploy Set the trigger to Manual Define a workspace for the build definition. Note that a BDT build doesn’t really need a workspace, since all it does is to launch another build definition and deploy the output of that build. But TFS doesn’t allow you to save a build definition without adding at least one mapping. On Build Defaults, select the build controller. Since this build actually won’t produce any output, you can select the “This build does not copy output files to a drop folder” option. On the process tab, select the LabDefaultTemplate.11.xaml. This is usually located at $/TeamProject/BuildProcessTemplates/LabDefaultTemplate.11.xaml. To configure it, press the … button on the Lab Process Settings property First, select the environment that you created before: Select which build that you want to deploy and test. The “Select an existing build” option is very useful when developing the BDT workflow, because you do not have to run through the target build every time, instead it will basically just run through the deployment and test steps which speeds up the process. Here I have selected to queue a new build of the MyApplication.Test build definition On the deploy tab, you need to specify how the application should be installed on the target server. You can supply a list of deployment scripts with arguments that will be executed on the target server. In this example I execute the generated web deploy command file to deploy the solution. If you for example have databases you can use sqlpackage.exe to deploy the database. If you are producing MSI installers in your build, you can run them using msiexec.exe and so on. A good practice is to create a batch file that contain the entire deployment that you can run both locally and on the target server. Then you would just execute the deployment batch file here in one single step. The workflow defines some variables that are useful when running the deployments. These variables are: $(BuildLocation) The full path to where your build files are located $(InternalComputerName_<VM Name>) The computer name for a virtual machine in a SCVMM environment $(ComputerName_<VM Name>) The fully qualified domain name of the virtual machine As you can see, I specify the path to the myapplication.deploy.cmd file using the $(BuildLocation) variable, which is the drop folder of the MyApplication.Test build. Note: The test agent account must have read permission in this drop location. You can find more information here on Building your Deployment Scripts On the last tab, we specify which tests to run after deployment. Here I select the test plan and the Automated Tests test suite that we saw before: Note that I also selected the automated test settings (called TargetServer in this case) that I have defined for my test plan. In here I define what data that should be collected as part of the test run. For more information about test settings, see Specifying Test Settings for Microsoft Test Manager Tests We are done! Queue your BDT build and wait for it to finish. If the build succeeds, your build summary should look something like this:

• The emergence of Atlassian's Bamboo (and a free SQL Source Control license offer!)

  The rise in demand for database continuous integration has forced me to skill-up in various new tools and technologies, particularly build servers. We have been using JetBrain's TeamCity here at Red Gate for a couple of years now, having replaced the ageing CruiseControl.NET, so it was a natural choice for us to use this for our database CI demos. Most of our early adopter customers have also transitioned away from CruiseControl, the majority to TeamCity and Microsoft's TeamBuild. However, more recently, for reasons we've yet to fully comprehend, we've observed a significant surge in the number of evaluators for Atlassian's Bamboo. I installed this a couple of weeks back to satisfy myself that it works seamlessly with Red Gate tools. As you would expect Bamboo's UI has the same clean feel found in any Atlassian tool (we use JIRA extensively here at Red Gate). In the coming weeks I will post a short step-by-step guide to setting up SQL Server continuous integration using the Red Gate command lines. To help us further optimize the integration between these tools I'd be very keen to hear from any Bamboo users who also use Red Gate tools who might be willing to participate in usability tests and other similar research in exchange for Amazon vouchers.   Having spelling mistakes on a website degrades customer experience by many times. Developers and website content creators spend good amount of time in going through the content manually to make sure that there are no spelling mistakes. At times few mistakes slip in as manual process is error prone. There are few web services and tool available in the market which provide automated spell checking services but they have certain limitations like – high fees to use the service, limitation on the number of pages they scan for errors, privacy issues, etc. What about a free tool that runs locally on your PC and spell checks unlimited web pages? Here comes Spell Checker extension for  Firefox web browser. This free Firefox extension is developed by  Gaurang, a Software Test Engineer based out in India. Once the extension is installed it adds a new context menu “Check Spelling” and a small icon to Add-On bar. To check spellings of a web page just click on the icon or the context menu and it will highlight all the errors on the page. • Getting my brother MFC-J825DW working as a network scanner

  I've been attempting to set up my new brother multi-function device to work as a printer and scanner using the following steps. It is connected to the network as a LAN device, not directly connected to my ubuntu machine. Downloaded the lpr driver and cupswrapper driver from Brother support. (Select the deb packages, not the rpms). Followed the instructions to install the lpr driver. Followed the instructions to install the cupswrapper driver. After this point I was able to successfully perform a test print, so the printer part is working. So far I haven't had much luck getting the scanner working. This is what I've tried: Downloaded the brscan4 and scan-key-tool deb packages from brother support. Followed the instructions for installing the scanner driver for network. Followed the instructions for installing scan-key-tool. However when I tried to scan it detects no scanner. I then tried the solution offered in this answer to a question based on a similar brother printer, but no luck. I must have made a mistake somewhere along the line. Does anyone have any ideas what I can try to find out what? Or should I uninstall everything and start again from the beginning?

• New Visual Studio 2010 Extension - Collapse Solution

  If your team has recently upgraded to Visual Studio 2010, take a second to check out the new Extension Manager. You can use it to browse through or install tons of tools, controls, or templates from the Visual Studio Gallery. My friend, Cory Cissell, and I recently teamed up and created an extension of our own called "Collapse Solution". It adds an option called Collapse Solution to the context menu of the solution node in the solution explorer. It also adds an option called Collapse Project to the context menu of each project node in the solution explorer. When that option is clicked, it will walk through the solution explorer tree and collapse any expanded child nodes in that section (projects, folders, code behind files, designer files, etc.). I use to have an add-in that did this in Visual Studio 2008 but it wasn't compatible when we upgraded to 2010 so we decided to write our own. The old tool was also packaged with a bunch of other junk that we didn't need so we figured it would be a much cleaner tool if it was broken off into its own extension. There's no need to install extra tools if you don't really need them. • Getting mybrother MFC-J825DW working as a network scanner

  I've been attempting to set up my new brother multi-function device to work as a printer and scanner using the following steps. It is connected to the network as a LAN device, not directly connected to my ubuntu machine. Downloaded the lpr driver and cupswrapper driver from Brother support. (Select the deb packages, not the rpms). Followed the instructions to install the lpr driver. Followed the instructions to install the cupswrapper driver. After this point I was able to successfully perform a test print, so the printer part is working. So far I haven't had much luck getting the scanner working. This is what I've tried: Downloaded the brscan4 and scan-key-tool deb packages from brother support. Followed the instructions for installing the scanner driver for network. Followed the instructions for installing scan-key-tool. However when I tried to scan it detects no scanner. I then tried the solution offered in this answer to a question based on a similar brother printer, but no luck. I must have made a mistake somewhere along the line. Does anyone have any ideas what I can try to find out what? Or should I uninstall everything and start again from the beginning?

As the part of the development process, I need to build a prototype and playtest it, to see if the game mechanics and user interaction is ok For example: if I have a starship shooting at ememies, I need to see what's the best size for my starship. what trajectories should the enemy ships fly and what velocity. Should the enemy ships be coming only from left to right, or also from top Should the enemy ships form a 'flock' or just fly by themselves what's the best 'powerup' pickup mechanics: to shoot it, or to pick it with the ship etc Implementing these details directly in Java (Android) is time consuming and as many of the 'hypotheses' will be rejected, I also don't want to invest a lot of time to code thigs, majority of which gonna be rejected. I found 'tool' Etoys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34cWCnLC5nM&feature=related and official website http://www.squeakland.org/ which helps to build 'prototype' quickly, but Etoys is meant for children learning programming and is too basic. SO MY QUESTION IS: Is there any prototyping tool, as simple as Etoys and with better prototype quality?
