  • Programming for a 32-bit environment vs programming for a 64-bit environment / Build configurations

    I was looking at some same code (a sample MS Visual Studio C++ project) recently with multiple build configurations (Release/Debug, Win32/x64). My question: What is the difference? I guess I understand Release/Debug (Release = finalized version of project, Debug = version used to run in debugger), but what things need to be considered when building different versions for Win32/x64 platforms? Is there any coding differences, or does this just affect how that same code is ultimately built into machine code? I know there are different library files depending on whether you're using a 32-bit or 64-bit system as well... Are all of these differences again just machine code? Would a 32-bit library file and its corresponding 64-bit library file be two files with exactly the same functions build from the same source code originally, and only differing in their machine code implementation?   • Including Build Date strings in a C# project

    I'd like to hard code the build date into my application (DD-mmmm-YYYY), but how do I embed this constant into the code? I thought perhaps I could make a pre-build event that executes a *.bat file that updates a textfile which is resourced, but it sounds pretty involved. What's the best approach?

  • Undead Windows 7 service

    I created a Windows 7 service in Visual Studio 2010. Test install crashed and left lots of debris: service shows in the list of services but will not start ('Referenced file does not exist'), is impossible to uninstall ('Action valid only for services that are installed') and is not shown in the Programs and Features aplet. Is there a list of installed services that I could hack? Thanks, Jan

  • Hudson Notifier?

    Is their any notifier which let's you add specific build in the notifier. Right now i am using Hudson Tacker (http://hudsontracker.sourceforge.net/index.html) which works fine but it only let's me add one build or all the builds. I didn't see any notifiers in http://wiki.hudson-ci.org/display/HUDSON/Plugins which might have this functionality. Thanks.

  • C#/Mono Run Server in Background

    Hello, I created a Server that listens for HTTP connections all the time. It's a default Console Application and runs on a Linux Machine using Mono (2.4). The Problem is that i want this Server to move itself to the background (deamonize itself). I couldn't find a Solution on Google and mono Server.exe & is not really what i'm looking for, eventhough it works for the moment. Any hints/ideas?

"Project/Build automatically" is checked. I'm using the Scala Eclipse Plugin 2.7.7-final How can I achieve that this works like in java projects?

  • What method do I use to manage an app-specific background process?

    I am developing an application with different behavior depending on the arguments : "-config" starts a Gtk window to change options, start and close the daemon. "-daemon" starts a background process that does something every X minutes. I already know how to use fork/system/exec etc... But I would like to know the main logic of such application to : restart or refresh the daemon when configuration change. keep only one instance of the daemon. I have read that killing the daemon to restart it is not a clean way to do. How other applications do ? (ubuntuone, weather forecast, rss feed working with notification area) Thanks for your help. PS : I don't want to create a system-wide daemon, just a user application with a background process.

    I have used the & command before to make a script run another script in the background like so: #!/bin/bash echo "Hello World" script1.sh & script2.sh & echo "Please wait..." But lets say I have another script with an IF ELSE statment and I would like to set an ELIF statement mid flow as a background task witht the & and then carry on with processing the rest of my script knowing that while rest of the ELIF will carry running in the back ground: #!/bin/bash if cond1; then stuff sleep 10 & stuff stuff elif cond2; then something else else echo "foo" fi stuff echo "Hello World" I really hope this makes sense any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Which workflow engine should I chose for implementing a dynamic reconfiguration of workflows?

    I want to be able to interrupt a running workflow instance, say when a new activity is about to be invoked, and extract information both about the structure of the workflow and the data in the particular instance. Then I will consult with an external system and according to its response I will possibly alter the behaviour of the workflow. The options I would like to have are addition/removal of activities and altering parameters for the activities to be invoked. I am currently struggling with the engine it's best to go with. I have looked at WWF, Apache ODE, Oracle Workflow and Active BPEL and as far as I understand they can all provide me with the options I need. I would really appreciate any recommendations on which one will be the easiest to work with for my purpose and any restrictions either of the above might have that would prevent me from reaching my goal.   • How do you work on Strategic Development initiatives when Tactical work takes priority?

    My day-to-day job consists of maintaining large volume websites and this has given me exposure to developing better methods to develop and maintain the code. This has also given me a large body of knowledge in the code base in terms of troubleshooting that is beneficial to the company. I'm also the maintainer of an IDE plug in I created to help navigate and generate code that is used. Operationally though, my job is to handle any client requests that come in of that are emergencies and make any enhancements and additions to the code base required. This work, along with the daily managing and feeding of the the project managers will take up my entire day. How does one manage the time between the tactical day job and the strategic initiatives? How does one get and ask for recognition for taking strategic initiatives? Is the 8-9 hour day just not going to cut it? Is there even a job out there for programmers to develop strategic initiatives and solutions for a company? I want to also point out that this isn't a problem with the company at all. I think this is more of a personal-improvement decision. Nobody will say no to the improvements at all. I believe in making the things happen but I don't think I'm going to get time from the company to do it...

    I am considering building an app in C++ that will be parsing text from the web and create some statistical results. These results I want to be fed in an external app in real time. The external app (to whose code I have no access, but can ask for a - paid - custom made addition) will then need some code to read and use these results. I am wondering what would be the best way to interconnect the two apps, in terms of speed and ease of implementation. I am considering : disk I/O (slow) a Windows service a DLL a web service a web page Perhaps I am missing a better solution ? Thank you.

  • How can I obtain in-game data from Warcraft 3 from an external process?

    I am implementing a behavior algorithm and would like to test it with my lovely Warcraft III game to watch how it will fight against real players. The problem I'm having is that I don't know how to obtain information about in-game state (units, structures, environment, etc.) from the running WC3 game. My algorithm needs access to the hard drive and possibly distributed computing, that's why JASS (WC3's editor language) isn't appropriate; I need to run my algorithm from a separate process. Direct3D hooking is an approach, but it wasn't done for WC3 yet and a significant drawback of that approach would be the inability to watch how the AI performs online, since it uses the viewport to issue commands. How I read in-game data from WC3 in a different process in a fastest and easiest way?

  • Customizing File Linkage for a Build Configuration (Not Buil Target)

    I have a project that has several build configurations (FREE version, male-only, female-only, etc.). I am avoiding using multiple build targets because (A) the products are mostly all the same and (B) I don't want to have to do checkbox-management to keep every file I have included with all the targets. However, I have just a few files it would be nice NOT to include in certain builds. For example, I have male and female voice files, but I only want the male files in the male build and female voices in the female build. Question...is there a way to manage the build configuration to prevent these files from being included/linked in? What are my options?

  • CI Build status output alternatives

    We currently use Cradiator to display the status of our continuous integration (CI) builds from CruseControl.net, on a 42" Samsung television on display high-up in our IT department. Cradiator is a great starting place, but we're getting to the point whereby we're having lots of projects on there and it's starting to get a bit 'full'. What I'd like to know is, what do you use to display your build statuses? Custom software? Off the shelf stuff? etc. Alternatively, I'm looking for ideas on how we improve on Cradiator.

As for now, I use cron that works every minute and activates a task that repeats itself every 5 seconds with sleeps between, for a minute. However, it works also when the application isn't being used. Is there a gem that will do this kind of thing?

  • Re-execute target when specified as dependency to multiple rules

    I have the following GNU makefile: .PHONY a b c d a: b c b: d c: d d: echo HI I would like the target 'd' to be run twice -- since it is specified as a dependency by both b & c. Unfortunately, the target 'd' will be executed only once. The output of running make will simply be 'HI', instead of 'HI HI'. How can I fix this? Thanks!   • Is there a variable in Rails that equates to the template that is being rendered?

    I can do request.path_parameters['controller'] and request.path_parameters['action'], but is there anything like request.path_parameters['template'] so I can discern which template file (such as index.html.erb) is being rendered? I'm writing a method that automatically sets the body id to the template being rendered, for easy css manipulation: class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base ... after_filter :define_body_selector ... def define_body_selector # sets @body_id to the name of the template that will be rendered # ie. if users/index.html.erb was just rendered, @body_id gets set to "index" @body_id = ??? end ...
