  • Apache internal test servers

    I want to build a test system in the office. On one box I will install XAMPP. I will put a website that I want to test on that box. Now I do not want it connected to the Internet. So my plan is to use a reverse proxy to resolve things like ads and other external links. So I am thinking of using mod_proxy for that. Now my question is, How many boxes do I need? 1 for Xampp, 1 for mod_proxy and 1 for the server where mod proxy redirects them to. Total of three. But maybe I could do it with less. Can I run Mod_proxy on the first box? Is there a better way? Thanks

  • Distributing a custom command line tool to enterprise servers

    I've been tasked with building a command line tool that we will be providing to our enterprise customers so that they can use the API to upload data to our platform. The API works with standard cURL requests, so I can do most of the basic functionality with simple bash scripting, although I would like to provide something that is solid and really makes it easy for them to use and I don't know what I don't know. It's been a good 8 years since I've really done any serious sysadmin work. Most of the good tools I use these days are written in Ruby or Python and have a standard distribution process (Gems, for example). However, I know rhel and other platforms have their own package managers. Finally, the question: In today's day and age, what language / distribution method should I consider in order to cover the widest range of platforms without having to build completely different versions for each platform? I'd also love any general feedback you have about building similar projects, or links to projects that you think do a good job of this now and have open source code that I could read.   • Cannot Access Web Interface on HP 2510G

    I am currently setting up a new infrastructure with HP 2510s as edge switches and an HP E5406 as the main switch. I also have a DHCP and DNS server running on the same network. When i first set up one of my 2510 switches, I gave it a static IP through the console and then went to the web interface to continue my configuration. Later, I realized that I assigned it the wrong IP address, so i went through the web interface and changed the IP address to the correct one. Now, I can't access the web interface. I can telnet to the switch on the new IP address, but the web interface will not load. If I switch from static IP to DHCP, it loads the web interface. Any ideas on what could be causing the web server in the 2510 not to load with the new static IP address?

  • Any Way to monitor JMX Servers with NetIq ?

    I ask this question after a search in the site, there's many JMX questions but I think no one with a NetIq involved. In the documentation of NetIq, There's no "module" to check JMX, but I have seen that u can make "custom" modules and "custom" scripts, in Perl and VbScript. The question is if anyone with more experience than me on NetIq, has made any custom script or module to check JMX. I look on technet too, for a JMX Api for Windos Shell or Powershell with no luck. Of course, JMX is much more powerfull, but what I really need is to "monitor" some values inside NetIq, because we cant install Nagios, Cacti, Hyperic or any other monitor software but NetIq.   • Port-forwarding on livebox to router

    Hello, At home, I have two routers, one Livebox and a Netgear. The reason why I need the Livebox is that the phone line cannot be connected to the Netgear router. So I have the Livebox connected to the phone line, the Netgear connected to the Livebox, and all PCs connected to the Netgear. My issue is that for every application or port that I want to give external access, I have to create entry in both the Livebox and the Netgear routers; so I would like to know if there's a way to automatically forward all requests to the Netgear router, from which I will then forward to the required IP:port.   • How to setup separate MySQL and PHP VPS servers

    Someone recommended I should have my MySQL server separate from my Apache/PHP server in case of hacking and such. By visiting linode, slicehost and various articles here on serverfault I've managed to cobble together a decent set of instructions on how to do the Apache/PHP bit. I'm using Rackspace VPS and they provide an internal IP for each server. If I setup a MySQL VPS, should I assume that I would just add the internal IP for the database host? And I guess that I would only need to open up my default ssh port and mysql ports and install phpmyadmin on there? Ideally I would have webserver.mydomain.com and dbserver.mydomain.com (two 256mb VPS's) with servermin on webserver.mydomain.com and phpmyadmin on dbserver.mydomain.com. If anyone has any guides or advice on how to setup this type of solution I'd be more then grateful!

  • Looking for the best ec2 setup for 3 sites totaling in 1.5 mil in traffic monthly

    I am looking to consolidate our current aws setup of 2 Large ubuntu ec2 servers and 2 large RDS server for our 3 websites that have a total of about 1.5 million hits a month and increasing every month with the majority of traffic (1 mil) to one forum site in the group and the rest of traffic to an ecommerce site and a small wordpress site. So here is my question/thought? Would it be better for us to combine the two ec2 large servers to just one and same with the 2 RDS servers so we run all three sites off one large ec2 and one RDS. -or- Should we setup maybe 2-3 smaller ec2 servers load balenced and a single RDS. -or- Something completely different setup? One concern is that if one site crashes it takes with it the others. It happened in the past but I am pretty sure its because of the forum software and not the server setup. -john

  • Email setup on dedicated servers

    Am thinking seriously of renting a dedicated server. Now I know how to setup apache and the underlying scripting engines and databases but I'm a bit clueless with how the emails would work. Currently, I'm on a shared hosting account and I get a fancy gui which allows me to nicely add a domain, setup nameservers and then the emails for all domain names with either simple forwarding or the full account which also has a webmail app behind it. What options do I have? Are there non complicated ways to have the same email setup experience? Or are there reliable external providers I could use? My past experiences with sendmail/postfix have always been fuzzy - not exactly knowing whats happening behind the scenes.

I generally deploy on the second last release of Ubuntu for stability reasons, do you some other filesystems or use distributed file systems from the get go ? Do the hdparam settings change for different File systems ? I haven't tried this yet, so how much difference do changes like this make ?

    I am trying to setup the TFS automated deploys. But I keep getting the following error message when running the deploy. It appears that I have a service called "Web Management Service", but the error message says that I need "We Deploy Agent Service". I tried installing Web Deploy 2.0, but the server said that I already had this installed. What can I do to fix this problem? Error Code: ERROR_DESTINATION_NOT_REACHABLE Could not connect to the destination computer ("myServer"). On the destination computer, make sure that Web Deploy is installed and that the required process ("Web Deployment Agent Service") is started. --Update-- Looks like the Web Deployment agent is not installed by default. I had to re-install MSDeploy, select Change or Custom, then add the Web Deploy Agent service. Now the deploy works correctly.

    Hello, we'd like to implement a daily spam report to our users like Dreamhost does. Basically we need to send a daily mail (at midnight for example) to inform a single user of all the emails currently in his spam folder with the related score to let them look right away if there's a false positive. We use a basic sendmail server with procmail to redirect spam to the spam folder in each home directory. Do you know if is there a perl script or some other tool that does just that?   • cannot send emails to other Web servers

    I'm trying to limit my server's open ports in CSF. The IPv4 port settings include: # Allow incoming TCP ports TCP_IN = "22,25,53,80,110,143,443,587,3654,53343” # Allow outgoing TCP ports TCP_OUT = "22,53,80,113,443,465,995,3654" # Allow incoming UDP ports UDP_IN = "53" # Allow outgoing UDP ports # To allow outgoing traceroute add 33434:33523 to this list UDP_OUT = "53,113,123" As you see, I have port 25 open in TCP_IN but have removed it from TCP_OUT. The reason is I wanted to have my mails transmitted over smtps, so I have port 465 opened instead in TCP_OUT. Since I am using Rouncube in Directpanel, I have also set the following in Rouncube's config.inc.php: $config['default_host'] = 'ssl://mail.mydomain.com'; $config['smtp_server'] = 'ssl://mail.mydomain.com'; $config['smtp_port'] = 465; However, when I remove port 25 from TCP_OUT, I no longer can send mails, say, to gmail, though I can send mails to own. But I can receive all mails. Please let me know if I need to make any further changes. Do I need to disable port 25 at all, to have my mails sent via ssl. Thanks

Now I would like to have a user-two@localhost (etc) relay via google with their own respective passwords. Is that possible?

    Some time ago, RFC 6106 was created, which states how a router tells the clients about the DNS server to be used. It is a new standard, it has to be implemented, which needs time etc. I'm courious about the need for it: wouldn't have it been better to define a "globally valid" anycast address for DNS? Queries would be sent to this address and would be promoted along the default route until there is a host which claims to be responsible for it. In an enterprise network, that would be a central DNS server (or even more, on really big companies); in a SOHO network, it would either be the router or the DNS server of the ISP, in a root server hosting data center, it would be the DNS of the hoster, etc. What do I see wrong here? Do I have a wrong view of the anycast concept?

  • Setting up HTTPS across multiple servers

    I'm looking to offer our online services over https and I'm having a couple of problems understanding how to accomplish this. To access our services you must pass through our ISA firewall to a Win2000 server running IIS6. About half our services are located here and the other half take you to a Win2003 server also running IIS6. So, in order to achieve this must each server have the proper certificate installed? ISA, IIS6_1 and IIS6_2? Is there a separate configuration that must be made to our ISA firewall? The other problem is with the CA and knowing how many certificates I need. It's important to note that the domain name for our services on IIS6_1 is www.domainname.com but the domain name on IIS6_2 is services.domainname.com. I believe that this will require me to purchase more than one certificate. It looks as though we will be going with Thawte's SSL123 as it's a good name and it's fast to get. Will I need to purchase 2 certificates (one for www that will be installed on our ISA firewall as well as IIS6_1, and one for services.domainname.com on IIS6_2)? Or will I need to purchase 3, the extra one being used on our firewall server? Another side question is about SAN's (subject alternative names). Is this basically adding sub-domains to your cert? So I could purchase one cert with 1 SAN for my www and services.? Thanks a lot for your help! Please let me know if I can provide any further information.

  • Site-to-Site PPTP VPN connection between two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers

    We have two Windows Server 2008 R2 machines, one in our main office and one in a new office which we have just moved offsite. The main office has previously been handling client-to-server PPTP VPN connections. Now that we have moved our second server out of office, we want to set up a demand-dial or persistent VPN connection from the second server to the primary. Using a custom setting RRAS profile, we have successfully managed to set up a site-to-site VPN connection so that from the second server itself, it can access any of the devices in the main office and communicate back. However, any connected machines in the second office cannot use this connection, even when using the second server as gateway. The demand-dial interface is setup from the Second Server dialing into Main Server and a static route set up on RRAS for 192.168.0.0 with subnet mask 255.255.0.0 pointing down this network interface. The main office has the network of 192.168.0.0/16 (subnet mask 255.255.0.0). The second office has the network of 172.16.100.0/24 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0). What steps do we need to take to ensure traffic from the second office PCs going towards 192.168.x.x addresses use the VPN route? Many Thanks in advance for any help the community can offer.   • Rackspace Cloud servers backing up

    Is there anyway to backup an image of a rackspace cloud server? something thats easy to do instead of running scripts backing up each db and fs. This seems like something easy to do on EC2 and impossible to do on rackspace cloud. Also i know rightscale can work with rackspace cloud only for ubuntu images. Is it possible to do this with rightscale easily if its not yet available directly in rackspacecloud?
