  • Best software to convert video to a different aspect ratio for various screensizes

    I sometimes get .mp4 and other video formats whose aspect ratio is clearly off What apps do you use to reconvert such videos to an aspect ratio better suited to to fit either a regular desktop or LCD screen size? Hopefully with little or no loss of audio/video quality Any instructions on best settings to use would be very welcome. I have so far mostly used vlc which came off with less-than-ideal results. Thanks for any help you can offer.

    Have seen quite a few questions in Serverfault and Super User but none that specifically answers my question. We have an application that is being provided and installed by a third party company. They are charging market rate 'consultancy' fee to do this. They installed majority of the folders in the root of the C drive, to my shock. Are there any official Microsoft Best Practice guides out there to say applications should be installed in Program Files.

    Hypothetical situation, I have 3 node modules all native, A, B, and C.  A is a utilities module which exposes several functions to javascript through the node interface, in addition it declares/defines a rich set of native structures and functions B is a module which is dependent on data structures and source in A, it exposes some functions to javascript, in addition it declares/defines native structures and functions C is a module which is dependent on data structures and source in A & B, it exploses some functions to javascript, in addition it declares/defines native structures and functions So far when setting up these modules I have a preinstall script to install other dependent includes, but in order to access all of another modules source what is the best way to link to it's share library object (*.node) ?     i read some wisdom like this : Programmers are encouraged to be careful when using by-reference variables since they can negatively affect the readability and maintainability of the code. i make my own solution, such as give suffix such as _ref in every by-reference variables. so, if i have a variable named as $files_in_root, then i will add suffix and changes it name into $files_in_root_ref. As far my knowledge goes, this is a good solution. So, here come the question Is there any best-practice on choosing suffix for by-reference variable in PHP coder world ? Or do you have any ? In general, how do we sustain readability and maintainability on PHP project with more then 3000 line of code ? I hope PHP coder world has unwritten aggrement for first question, cause it will help spot a pattern on any source code.

  • Django/Python best practice template_dict

    Hi, After just been coding for about 6-9 months. I probably changed my coding style a number of times after reading some code or read best practices. But one thing I haven't yet come a cross is a good why to populate the template_dict. As of now I pass the template_dict across a number of methods (that changes/modifies it) and returns is. The result is that every methods takes template_dict as first argument and the returns it and this in my eyes doesn't seems to be the best solution. An idea is to have a method that handles all the changes. But I'm curios if there's a best practice for this? Or is it "do what you feel like"-type of thing? The 2 things I think is pretty ugly is to send as an argument and return it in all methods. And the just the var name is written xxx number of times in the code :) ..fredrik

    R is a statistics programming language. Part of R is the use of Packages, which themselves are written in the R language. Programming best practice includes the use of unit-testing to test the functions within these packages while they are being written and when they are used. I am aware of a few packages for unit testing within R, these being RUnit Svunit Testthat I'm interested to know; Are there any other packages out there ? Given peoples experience, do these packages excel at different things ? What's the current state of the art in unit testing for R ?

  • iPhone: Best Method for Passing Data to and from a Server

    I am developing an iPhone application that downloads data from a website. The website database is implemented in SQL and the site itself uses the classic ASP interface. I am unsure as to which method would be best for transferring data to and from the server. Both JSON and SOAP require XML processing and I'm not sure how that affects performance or which of those two is best. What would be the best method in general for data transfer given the server configuration we currently have? I very new to this field and I'm a bit confused. Any help would be appreciated.

  • R: simple and short if clauses for combind statements

    Hello, TRUE/FALSE if clauses are easily and quickly done in R. However, if the argument gets more complex, it also gets ugly very soon. For instance: I might want to execute different operations for a row(foo) dependent on the value in one cell (foo[1]). Let the intervals be 0:39 and 40:59 and 60:100 Something like does not exit: (if foo[1] "in" 40:60){... In fact, I only see ways of at least two if clauses and two else statements and the action for the first interval somewhere at the bottom of the code. With more intervals(or any other condition) it is getting more complex. Is there a best practice (for this purpose or others) with a simple construction and nice design to read? Thanks a lot!

  • Best way to make a script to SSH?

    My university has quite a lot files (like past papers etc) which I need to be on the uni network to access them. I ssh, using port forwarding, into the network and set my browser (Firefox) to go through that port. I know it would be quite easy to write something in most languages that would enter the command into a terminal, but which language/method could I use to make this happen? I expect some sort of scripting language could but I really know nothing about them, but I'd be willing to learn one just to have a little fun with this. I'm using a cygwin terminal on Windows 7, if that will make a difference. To neaten up my question: Which language would be best to acheive the above effect? Not necessarily the best, just possible and relatively simple to learn. I used the word best so I suppose I'll put a subjective tag.
