• Adventures in Lab Management Configuration: Part 2 of 3

  The first post was the high level overview. Now it is time for the details on what was done to the existing CMMI Project based on CMMI v 4.2. The first step was to go into Visual Studio, then from the Team Project Collection Settings and then to the Process Template Manager.  Once there, it was a matter of selecting the appropriate template (MSF for CMMI Process Improvement v5.0) and download to a point I could reference later (for example C:\Templates). Then on to using the steps from the guidance post. Since I was using an x64 deployment, I will make reference to the path as <toolpath>, however the actual path to reference in a 64-bit environment is “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE”. As I mentioned on the previous post, make sure to first perform a backup of the Configuration, Collection and Warehouse DBs.  If you did not apply any changes to the names and such, then you will find those as tfs_Configuration, tfs_DefaultCollection and tfs_Warehouse. Now, the work needed with the witadmin tool: That includes the uploading of the structures that differ from v4.2 to v5.0 There is likely going to be an issue with the naming of some fields. For example, TFS 2010 likes something along the lines of “Area ID”, whereas TFS 2008 would have had it as “AreaID”.  So, this will need to be corrected.  Some posts will have you go through this after the errors pop up.  I would recommend doing this process prior to executing the importwitd process.  witadmin listfields /collection:<path to collection> > c:\ListFields.txt Review the following fields: AreaID, review the Name property and validate if it states “AreaID”, the you will need to rename the Name field to reflect “Area ID”. ExternalLinkCount, RelatedLinkCount, HyperLinkCount, AttachedFileCount and IterationID would be the other fields to check. • How to send packets via a pptp vpn tunnel?

  I'm trying to send certain port traffic through my ppp0 interface it's a pptp vpn tunnel, First, I'm using a wireless usb interface, I connect up to my access point, then I initiate my vpn, there is a connection but I do not channel all connexions through that, nor do I want to, so, say I want to channel all port 80 packets through my vpn (interface dev ppp0). I first run: iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j MARK --set-mark 0xa to mark the correct packets then I add a table named vpn_table, I then add ip route add default dev ppp0 table vpn_table when I do that traffic begins to dribble through the ppp0, but no pages load. I supose I must have caused some sort of coflict, or the route I'm adding in vpn_table isn't quite right. I'm not sure, I think I'm marking the packets correctly but I can't be sure of that either. UPDATE: I think i've got part of the issue solved: running tcpdump -i ppp0 showed me that indeed there was outgoing requests via ppp0, now, there is never a response, and pages do not load with using that interface..i'm still missing something.

• Story of success: MySQL Enterprise Backup (MEB) was successfully integrated with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) via System Backup to Tape (SBT) interface.

  Since version 3.6 MEB supports backups to tape through the SBT interface.The officially supported tool for such backups to tape is Oracle Secure Backup (OSB).But there are a lot of other Storage Managers. MEB allows to use them through the SBT interface. Since version 3.7 it also has option --sbt-environment which allows to pass environment variables, not needed by OSB, to third-party managers. At the same time MEB can not guarantee it would work with all of them.This month we were contacted by a customer who wanted to use IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) with MEB. We could only say them same thing I wrote in previous paragraph: this solution is supposed to work, but you have to be pioneers of this technology. And they agreed. They agreed to be the pioneers and so the story begins.MEB requires following options to be specified by those who want to connect it to SBT interface:--sbt-database-name: a name which should be handed over to SBT interface. This can be any name. Default, MySQL, works for most cases, so user is not required to specify this option.--sbt-lib-path: path to SBT library. For TSM this library comes with "Data Protection for Oracle", which, in its turn, interfaces with Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN), which uses SBT interface. So you need to install it even if you don't use Oracle.--sbt-environment: environment for third-party manager. This option is not needed when you use OSB, but almost always necessary for third-party SBT managers. TSM requires variable TDPO_OPTFILE to be set and point to the TSM configuration file.--backup-image=sbt:: path to the image. • my domain is well indexed just in my country

  This is my domain : http://yon.ir and it mainly should be shown in search results with the keyword "????? ????? ????" in country of Iran it is shown in google search results with rank 13 (with that keyword) which is logical but with IPs of other countries , it's not shown even in 10 first google result pages. (but the domain is indexed and when I search the whole domain title, it shows up my site at first) it's about 10 days with this manner and the domain is not new .(it was working with its previous owner before) So , what's the problem here?

• Loading Wavefront Data into VAO and Render It

  I have successfully loaded a triangulated wavefront(.obj) into 6 vectors, the first 3 vectors contain the locations for vertices, uv coords, and normals. The last three have the indices stored for each of the faces. I have been looking into using VAO's and VBO's to render, and I'm not quite sure how to load and render the data. One of my biggest concerns is the fact that indexed rendering only allows you to have one array of indices, meaning I somehow have to make all of the first three vectors the same size, the only way I thought of doing this, is to make 3 new vertex's of equal size, and load in the data for each face, but that would completely defeat the purpose of indexing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Jordan

• PHP Riak in place update

  From what I can see, when using Riak to update an object, I first need to load the object into PHP, then edit the object, then store the object back to the Riak database. I was wondering if there is a way to update a bucket without pulling it into PHP first. That way, it would save on the network I/O and latency of pulling it into the PHP script. Can objects be edited directly on the Riak side of things? Edit: Is there away to push data to the end of a raik object, so if i have an object that is numeric array can i make a push to add subject that i know its not there or no in place updates what so ever

• SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 and the Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called error message

  When trying to install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 to a SQL Server 2008 instance that is running on a virtual machine, the installer will start:   But then after about 20 seconds I receive the following error message: TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure. ----------------------------- SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error: Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created. ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ Searching for this issue I found that several people have the same problem and there is no clear solution.  Some had success with closing windows or Internet Explorer but that didn’t work for me; what did work is to make sure the SQL Server 2008 “Please wait while SQL Server 2008 Setup processes the current operation.” dialog is selected and has the focus when it first shows up.  Selected (with the current focus) it looks like this:   Without focus the dialog looks like this: Add a comment if you find out any information about how to consistently get around this issue or why it is happening in the first place.

  I've recently read through Joel's guide to finding great developers (http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/FindingGreatDevelopers.html), and I feel really strongly that I am smart and get things done. The problem is, I didn't learn how to get things done until about halfway through college, so my GPA is less than stellar. Additionally, I've got a few other things going against me: late into the job market (~30), no internship, state college instead of university, and when I graduated, I pretty much had to take the first job that offered. With all of these things piled together, my resume (the first step to getting a job), is not terribly impressive. What can I do to let people know that I'm a great developer and would complement the best companies in the world?

  First things first: I have absolutely no interest in learning how to crack systems for personal enrichment, hurting other people or doing anything remotely malicious. I understand the basis of many exploits (XSS, SQL injection, use after free etc.), though I've never performed any myself. I even have some idea about how to guard web applications from common exploits (like the aforementioned XSS and SQL injection) Reading this question about the Internet Explorer zero-day vulnerability from the Security SE piqued my curiosity and made me wonder: how did someone even find out about this exploit? What tools did they use? How did they know what to look for? I'm wary about visiting hacker dens online for fear of getting my own system infected (the Defcon stories make me paranoid). So what's a good, safe place to start learning?

• Making your ASP.NET/HTML Websites Indic aware &ndash; accepting Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and ot

  Its been a month since I wrote my last post.  Much of work has been happening around planning for Tech Ed India, the upcoming Virtual TechDays this week as well as our Developer content at the Great Indian Developer Summit 2010.  Its going to be one exciting period starting this week and I am glad I would be able to meet a lot of folks who have written to me personally that they would like to catch up at Tech Ed India. For now, I had a chance to meet the Microsoft India Development Centre team that worked on the Microsoft Indic Language Input Tool (erstwhile Akshara). The team updated me that they have also released the scripts  so that the Indic input feature can be encapsulated into your own websites.  For example, if you are having a web page where you collect user information, you can pretty much make your site indic aware i.e. accept inputs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi etc.,  All you would need to include would be a bunch of scripts onto your web pages and you are ready to make it, like I said, “indic aware” I have built a sample web page that accepts First Name, Last Name, Address and an additional field.  When it comes to accepting indic, sometimes, you may want to avoid the indic input in certain fields and accept it in English.  You can specify the MicrosoftILITWebAttach="false" attribute to the Text Boxes and Text Areas (TextMode=”Multiline” in ASP.NET) so that the particular field automatically switches over to English input.  Similarly, the moment you specify that the TextMode=”Password” to make it as a password field, it automatically ignores all indic recognition and shows the masked dots for the words entered. Note that, this is, when we are going for the Opt-out mode, where we are specifying that by default all the input controls would need indic awareness and we would specify for those controls where it is not required.  The other mode is Opt-in mode where you would need to add a different property to the script definition i.e. attachMode=”optin” .  When we do this, we need to explicitly add the MicrosoftILITWebAttach="true" attribute for every control where we need indic input. This also works for plain HTML based websites and doesn’t necessarily need you to use ASP.NET to achieve the functionality. Note that, this form is not completely localized.  This is transliterated.  You can add label controls for FirstName, LastName indication etc., and use the Visual Studio tools to localize and get those values from resource files.  In the resource files, you can enter the text in different languages to make this a truly localized page.  If you just want to download the Indic Tool Desktop version (that can be used for typing in Word, Excel, pretty much any input area), you can download it from http://specials.msn.co.in/ilit/  In the same page, there is also a web version where you can type and get text then and there if you dont want to install the desktop version. So, go ahead, download / use them in your websites and enjoy the power of Indic. Cheers !!!

• Use CSS Selectors with HtmlUnit

  HtmlUnit is a great library for performing web integration tests in Java.  But sometimes node traversal can be somewhat cumbersome. Fear not fellow automated tester (good for you!).  I found a great little project on Github that will allow you to query your document for elements via css selectors similar to jQuery. The project is located at https://github.com/chrsan/css-selectors.  You can use Maven to build it, or download 1.0.2 here.  Beware.  I will not be updating this link so I suggest you download the latest code. • Build one to throw away vs Second-system effect

  One one hand there is an advice that says "Build one to throw away". Only after finishing a software system and seeing the end product we realize what went wrong in the design phase and understand how we should have really done it. On the other hand there is the "second-system effect" which says that the second system of the same kind that is designed is usually worse than the first one; there are many features that did not fit in the first project and were pushed into the second version usually leading to overly complex and overly engineered. Isn't here some contradiction between these principles? What is the correct view over the problems and where is the border between these two? I believe that these "good practices" are were firstly promoted in the seminal book The Mythical Man-Month by Fred Brooks. I know that some of these issues are solved by Agile methodologies, but deep down, the problem is still the principles still stand; for example we would not make important design changes 3 sprints before going live.

  There is many tool exist to debug JavaScript visual studio , firebug and some other great plugin are one of them. here I show you solution for Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object doesn't support this property or method  if you search on Google for how to debug Javascript in Visual studio. all of them told you to follow this instruction :- go to Internet option in IE > advanced tab > Browsing section > uhcheck the both option disable script debugging for IE (internet explorer) disable script debugging (others). that’s the information you read are outdate or not true these days. in visual studio you can play with JavaScript debugging even these option is check or unchecked. off-course you  can try these step in express version of visual studio. I found a little problem that my code [based on jQuery plugin] try to call some function. some of them not implement in browser so they call other so that’s fine and work in every browser. when visual studio found some function they trying to call and not implemented in browser I use to debug they tell me Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object doesn't support this property or method  they tell me again whenever I put refresh [f5] in browser. so the thing they do you never like that. see error window first whenever code is not buggy and see everytime before see the page you want to see. this behavior harsh you. there is no problem whenever you not commonly used IE but whenever you really want to debugging you got some pain too from the behavior of this. well I have some patch for that if you really like the debugging in Visual studio with IE. so if you sure that code is not buggy or you really not want to see that’s window here is trick. when you debug the JavaScript in IE choose the compact mode and they never force you to see window first who tell the thing you not want to see.   Luckily I came across this title at a very early stage. If I remember correctly, I took notice of God of Light on Twitter right on the weekend it has been published on the Play Store. Mastering the various reflection items in God of Light is very easy to learn and new elements are introduced during the game. Amazing puzzle game Here's the initial review I posted on the Play Store: "Great change in puzzles Fantastic and refreshing concept of puzzle solving. The effects and the music match very well, putting the player in the right mood to game. Get enlightened and grow your skills until you are a true God of Light." And it remains true, even after completing the first realm completely. Similar to Quell it took me only a couple of hours during the evening to complete all levels in the available three realms, unfortunately. God of Light currently consists of 75 levels, well it's 25 in each realm to be precise, and the challenges are increasing. Compared to the iOS version from the AppStore, God of Light is available for free on Android - at least the first realm (25 levels). Unlocking the other two remaining realms is done through an in-app purchase. The visual appearance, the sound effects and the background music provided by UNKLE makes God of Light a superb package for any puzzle gamer. Whether it is simply reflecting light over multiple mirrors, or later on bending the rays of light with black holes, or using prisms to either split, enforce, or colourise your beam, God of Light is great fun and offers a good amount of joy. • Why does this script not open parallel gnome-terminals on a server?

  Why am I not able to have parallel gnome-terminals on my server while I can on my client. Here is a test that illustrates the problem. #!/bin/bash # this is the parent script gnome-terminal --command "./left.sh" sleep 10 gnome-terminal --command "./right.sh" #!/bin/bash echo "this is the left script" read -p "press any key to close this terminal" key #!/bin/bash echo "this is the right script" read -p "press any key to close this terminal" key When I run this on a regular ubuntu desktop (maverick) I see two terminals after 10 seconds. When I run this on a maverick server at a server farm, the second window does not appear until after I close the first one and wait 10 seconds. I am using tightvncserver to view the server desktop. (I could have simplified a bit more. The 10 second sleep is extraneous to the problem. In my real world application I need the first terminal to do some real work before starting the second. The problem probably still exists even if there is no sleep.)

  Possible Duplicate: Does the order of keywords matter in a page title? Apologies if this is a dupe. I tried searching, but didn't find anything specifically addressing this concern. When creating a large(ish) site, page titles usually reference both the site name and the current page name. However, it seems there are two main conventions: Bob's Awesome Site - Contact Page and Contact Page - Bob's Awesome Site I've looked around, and pages usually use one of the two variants above. Is there any reason to use one over the other? SEO/readability/usability/etc?   Which is the best place to request Ubuntu for a minor improvement? My request feature is this : In Ubuntu dash when I search for "Upd" it gives me update manager and some other files. Now when I click enter by default the first entry will be selected. Can we make this a slightly better experience by highlighting the first item in search results which will be selected by default if we press enter - Just like in Gnome shell Search for upd in unity dash Search for upd in gnome-shell If you notice, update manager is highlighted by default in gnome shell and appears more intuitive.   I have a sales call today in which the person that I am talking to is interested in what TFS would give them over Star Team, The first thing I believe that I can say is that TFS is cheaper! Especially if you are doing MSFT development already and your team members have MSDN subscriptions as the CALs for TFS are covered in the MSDN subscription. The other thing that I noticed about Star Team was all of the references to ‘readiness’ and ‘integration’. While that is great, that means that other tools will be needed to provide the features that are already bundled with TFS like, SharePoint integration, as well as Analysis Services and Reporting Services to provide visibility on the web with reports on project health, and team velocity.
