• Why does Ubuntu 9.10 hang during boot at "Booting processor 1 APIC 0x1 ip 0x6000"?

  I recently installed a new copy of Ubuntu 9.10 (Kernel 2.6.31-14) on to my Hp Pavilion dv6t, so I can setup a Linux development environment. The install went flawlessly and I proceeded with Ubuntu's udate manager's long list of updates (292 in all). I also setup a swap file and activated a Nvidia 185 driver for the Nvidia 260m GPU on the machine. After all this was done I restarted the computer and booted into Ubuntu this time with a newer 2.6.31-19 Kernel which was installed from the update manager. Hopefully this is enough information to go on. I should add that I'm still new to configuring and running a Linux OS although I know enough basic command line usage to do software development. This is my attempt to become more familiar with Linux and manage my own system. I'd like to get some insight on the nature of this system hang, what the problem is and how to resolve it. At this point I can scrap the install if I broke something, but my intuition says this is an issue with the kernel recognizing the correct hardware configuration for my system, or perhaps this is an issue with the APIC drivers managing Nehalem's new power management capabilities? • SATA Windows 7 Problems

  Scenario: Core 2 Duo processor, Gigabyte MB, 4 SATA Western digital 500 GB hard drives, windows 7 64 bit. Problem: Copying data from USB or among SATA hard drives is faulty. When trying to copy 20GB from one HD to another it starts off with normal ~14-15 MB/s transfer rates and eventually bogs down to < 120KB/s transfer rates. If I leave it alone over night I come back with my computer crashed and setting at BIOS detecting hard drives. Troubleshooting: Removed all but 1 HD with OS on it, everything seems to be happy. I can copy large files from USB HD to main/single HD. Ran SpinRite on all hard drives, no errors found. Tried adding one HD to machine and problem exists, tried switching SATA cables, and SATA ports on MB. Reinstalled windows 7 x2 (from different disks..). Oddly enough if I boot to a ubuntu everything works fine. Getting ready to purchase a new MB, but wanted to see if anyone had suggestions. Thanks!

• Windows 7 - svchost high cpu usage.

  Hey guys! I'm having a problem with windows 7 x64 i though it was slow and all then i saw that the cpu usage was always around 80% and started digging through google. there's two svchost consuming around 30% each and in the resources monitor there's a system interrupts consuming 45% all the time, i trid closing the aplications and makes no diference. so i tried some other things that i've found on gloogle like disable system update but didn't work. i'd love some help here. i don't know if it will help but here's my specs: Core 2 duo 4400 ATI radeon 4850 4gb ram DDR2 thanks anyway for your attention :) EDIT So i run the program and i got this info, did i get it right? EDIT As you asked here it is, did i get it right now? the other tcp/ip there's nothing. thanks again! :D EDIT I tried somthing here, i run msconfig and took the services that one of the svchost was using out of the startup and now my cpu is around 50%, but i still would like to make this better, i can't lose that much cpu power just because windows... thanks. EDIT yeah there's nothing i can do here, going to install xp for a while, it's really weird...

• Why is my new Phenom II 965 BE not significantly faster than my old Athlon 64 X2 4600+?

  I recently rebuilt my 5 year old computer. I upgraded all core components, in particular from an Athlon 64 X2 4600+ at 2.4 GHz with DDR2 800 to a Phenom II 965 BE (quad core) at 3.6 GHz with DDR3 1333 (actually 1600, but testing consistently detected memory errors at 1600). The motherboard is also much newer and better. The HDD's (x3), DVD writer and card reader are the same. The BIOS memory config is auto-everything except the base timing which I overrode to 1T instead of 2T. The BIOS CPU multiplier is slightly over-clocked to 3.6 GHz from the stock 3.4 GHz. I noticed compiling Java is slower than I expected. As it happens I have some (single-threaded) Java pattern-matching code which is CPU and memory bound and for which I have performance numbers recorded on a number of hardware platforms, including my old system. So I did a test run on the new equipment and was stunned to find that the numbers are only slightly better than my old system, about 25%. The data set it is operating on is a 148,975 character array, which should easily fit in caches, but in any event the new CPU has larger caches all around. The system was, of course, otherwise idle for the test and the test run is a timed 10 seconds to eliminate scheduling anomalies. A long while ago, when I upgraded only memory from DD2 667 to DDR2 800 there was no change in performance of this test, which subjectively supports that the test cycle does not need to (significantly) access main memory, but yes it is creating and garbage collecting a large number of objects in the process of this test (low millions of matches are found for the pattern set). I am about 99.999% certain the code hasn't changed since I last ran it on 2009-03-17 - but I can't easily retest the old hardware, because it is currently in pieces on my work-bench waiting to be built into a new computer for my kids. Note that Windows (XP) reports a CPU speed of 795 MHz unless I have some thing running. With stuff running it seems to jump all over the place each time I use ALT-Pause to display the system properties, everywhere from 795 MHz to 3.4 Ghz. So why might my shiny new hardware under-performing so badly? EDIT: The old memory was Mushkin DDR2 800 with timings set for auto which should have been 5-5-5-12. The new memory is Corsair DDR3 1600, running at 1333 with timings also auto which are 9-9-9-21. In both cases they are a paired set of dual channel DIMMs. I was waiting to ensure my system was stable before tweaking with memory timings.

• Windows 8 Fails to resume from sleep

  I have this weird issue. When I put the computer to sleep by pressing the power button, or using the sleep option in Charms, I can wake it up normally. However, if I close the lid, and later reopen it, all the fans come on, but nothing appears on the screen. I didn't have this issue using Windows 7. • Should I worry about the integrity of my linux software RAID5 after a crash or kernel panic?

I have read about the RAID5 write hole and am concerned: if my linux system locks up or kernel panics, should I be assume that the integrety of my data has been compromised and restore from backup? How can I know if the data on the RAID5 array is "safe"?

• Can I take my ReadyNAS drive in Raid1 and plug it straight into new different machine?

  I would assume that I can just take my HDD out of my NAS (in raid1 mirror) and plug it into another enclosure and have it work off the bat but I'd like to make sure... Any ideas? Edit: My current setup is a Netgear ReadyNAS in (hardware) raid1. I'm hoping to replace this with a home theatre type PC (possibly running Ubuntu), and would like to migrate my data without having to do a bulk transfer over my network between the 2 machines. Can anyone confirm the case for the Netgear ReadyNAS? Edit: Ok after further reading it seems that the ReadyNAS Duo formats my drive as ext3 in 16k blocks. There are instructions for mounting a drive into a linux box here: Mounting Sparc-based ReadyNAS Drives in x86-based Linux There is also talk about a linux image here: ReadyNAS Data Recovery - VMware recovery tool I'm not sure whether this means they ReadyNAS actually implements software raid under the hood, or what? • Best way to handle PHP sessions across Apache vhost wildcard domains

  I'm currently running a site that allows users to use custom domains (i.e. so instead of mysite.com/myaccount, they could have myaccount.com). They just change the A record of their domain and we then use a wildcard vhost on Apache to catch the requests from the custom domains. The setup is basically as seen below. The first vhost catches the mysite.com/myaccount requests and the second would be used for myaccount.com. As you can see, they have the exact same path and php cookie_domain. I've noticed some weird behavior surrounding the line below "#The line below me". When active, the custom domains get a new session_id every page load (that isn't the same as the non-custom domain session). However, when I comment that line out, the user keeps the same session_id on each page load, but that session_id is not the same as the one they'd see on a non-custom domain site either despite being completely on the same server. There is a sort of "hack" workaround involving redirecting the user to mysite.com/myaccount, getting the session ID, redirecting back to myaccount.com, and then using that ID on the myaccount.com. But that can get kind of messy (i.e. if the user logs out of mysite.com/myaccount, how does myaccount.com know?). For what it's worth, I'm using a database to manage the sessions (i.e. so there's no issues with being on different servers, etc, but that's irrelevant since we only use one server to handle all requests currently anyways). I'm fairly certain it is related to some sort of CSRF browser protection thing, but shouldn't it be smart enough to know it's on the same server? • NFS Datastore Appears Empty!

  Hi guys, I've got an NFS server problem. The datastore connected and seems to be a valid datastore in both the vSphere client and under /vmfs/volumes. The issue is that it appears to be empty! I can create files (eg: touch /vmfs/volumes/nfs_common/thefile) and it is correctly written to the nfs store. I can verify this by looking on the nfs server itself. But the vmkernel only sees an empty datastore; the file disappears. Another freebsd box can mount the same NFS share and see the files correctly. Some useful data: ESXi 4.0.0 Build 208167 NFS is unfsd running on a Buffalo Linkstation Pro Duo (a bit hacky I know). The share has file system permissions set to 777 at the moment. My /etc/exports is as follows, and as I say it connects fine. /mnt/array1/ESX_Shared 192.168.16.0/255.255.255.0(insecure,rw,sync,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check) The ESXi servers can also successfully mount NFS shares from other NFS servers. • Can't get virtual desktops to show up on RDWeb for Server 2012 R2

  I built a test lab using the Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview. The initial test lab has the following configuration (I have replaced our name with "OurCompanyName" because I would like it if Google searches for our name did not cause people to come to this site, please do the same in any responses) Physical hardware running Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview full GUI, acting as Hyper-V host (joined to the test domain as testVwHost.testVw.OurCompanyName.com) with the following VM's running on it VM running 2012 R2 Core acting as domain controller for the forest testVw.OurCompanyName.com (testDC.testVw.OurCompanyName.com) VM running 2012 R2 Core with nothing running on it joined to the test domain as testIIS.testVw.OurCompanyName.com A clean install of Windows 7, all that was done to it was all windows updates where loaded and sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /mode:vm was run on it A clean install of Windows 8, all that was done to it was all windows updates where loaded and sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /mode:vm was run on it I then ran "Add Roles and Features" from testVwHost and chose the "Remote Desktop Services Installation", "Standard Deployment", "Virtual machine-based desktop deployment". I choose testIIS for the roles "RD Connection Broker" and "RD Web Access" and testVwHost as "RD Virtualization Host" The Install of the roles went fine, I then went to Remote Desktop Services in server manager and wet to setup Deployment Properties. I set the certificate for all 3 roles to our certificate signed by a CA for *.OurCompanyName.com. I then created a new Virtual Desktop Collection for Windows 7 and Windows 8 and both where created without issue. On the Windows 7 pool I added RemoteApp to launch WordPad, For windows 8 I did not add any RemoteApp programs. Everything now appears to be fine from a setup perspective however if I go to https://testIIS.testVw.OurCompanyName.com/RDWeb and log in as the use Administrator (or any orher user) I don't see the virtual desktops I created nor the RemoteApp publishing of WordPad. I tried adding a licensing server, using testDC as the server but that made no difference. What step did I miss in setting this up that is causing this not to show up on RDWeb? If any additional information is needed pleas let me know. I have tried every possible thing I can think of and I am just groping around in the dark now. Cygwin is not letting me compile; I can see the files but it just doesn't let me compile and I do not understand why, am I doing something wrong?   We are going to be setting up two replicas of our DataMart and related databases, and our plan includes using Hyper-V VM's to handle the load. When creating the VM's, we cannot find specific requirements or recommendations for RAM/CPU power for read-only replicas. Our current Primary DataMart setup has 64GB RAM and Two Quad-Core procs, which so far has been adequate for our usage. • iptables management tools for large scale environment

  The environment I'm operating in is a large-scale web hosting operation (several hundred servers under management, almost-all-public addressing, etc -- so anything that talks about managing ADSL links is unlikely to work well), and we're looking for something that will be comfortable managing both the core ruleset (around 12,000 entries in iptables at current count) plus the host-based rulesets we manage for customers. Our core router ruleset changes a few times a day, and the host-based rulesets would change maybe 50 times a month (across all the servers, so maybe one change per five servers per month). We're currently using filtergen (which is balls in general, and super-balls at our scale of operation), and I've used shorewall in the past at other jobs (which would be preferable to filtergen, but I figure there's got to be something out there that's better than that). The "musts" we've come up with for any replacement system are: Must generate a ruleset fairly quickly (a filtergen run on our ruleset takes 15-20 minutes; this is just insane) -- this is related to the next point: Must generate an iptables-restore style file and load that in one hit, not call iptables for every rule insert Must not take down the firewall for an extended period while the ruleset reloads (again, this is a consequence of the above point) Must support IPv6 (we aren't deploying anything new that isn't IPv6 compatible) Must be DFSG-free Must use plain-text configuration files (as we run everything through revision control, and using standard Unix text-manipulation tools are our SOP) Must support both RedHat and Debian (packaged preferred, but at the very least mustn't be overtly hostile to either distro's standards) Must support the ability to run arbitrary iptables commands to support features that aren't part of the system's "native language" Anything that doesn't meet all these criteria will not be considered. The following are our "nice to haves": Should support config file "fragments" (that is, you can drop a pile of files in a directory and say to the firewall "include everything in this directory in the ruleset"; we use configuration management extensively and would like to use this feature to provide service-specific rules automatically) Should support raw tables Should allow you to specify particular ICMP in both incoming packets and REJECT rules Should gracefully support hostnames that resolve to more than one IP address (we've been caught by this one a few times with filtergen; it's a rather royal pain in the butt) The more optional/weird iptables features that the tool supports (either natively or via existing or easily-writable plugins) the better. We use strange features of iptables now and then, and the more of those that "just work", the better for everyone.

How can I easily find out what server or motherboard models will be compatible with this processor? I am ideally looking for a dual-processor motherboard and I see that it is socket LGA771. So I guess the underlying question is, how can I find what IBM motherboards (and servers) have dual socket LGA 771?
