  so I have 3 data sets, which all came from the first data set using the excel program. all consisted of random numbers from =randbetween(0,100) starting from A2:A102 which is 100 integers. for data set b I had to enter=SUM(A2+5) press enter and drag it down to get the integers for cells B2:B102 and for C I had to do multiplication t get it. I did =PRODUCT(A2:A102*5). so everything was taken from data set A. now I did the formulas needed to do sample standard dev and mean(average) . for data set a and b the standard deviations were the same but the mean was larger in data set B of course because I added 5 to each cell in set A. my question is why wouldn't the standard deviation be the same for data set C also? if im using the info from data set A? and how do I calculate the standard deviation (sample) by hand so I can explain why the standard dev doesn't change but the mean does. I don't know what numbers to include in the formula for sample standard deviation.

  I started using this new text editor called Kod (runs on Mac OS 10.6): http://kodapp.com/ It's very very fast, I'm a poor programmer and I don't have money to pay for TextMate, this might be the closest to TextMate that I've used. (TextMate cost around $50). The problem is.... Where is the preferences window? Where can I set the font size? I need to make it bigger, that's it... Does anyone know how to do that? EDIT: I think they haven't implement them yet... From their discussion in google group.

• How to copy/paste LARGE amounts of text in Windows

  I am not sure if this is more suited for Superuser or Stackoverflow, but here goes... A little bit of background: I'm learning SQL and was trying to make a very large table which I could use for optimization tests. Something generic with random values. I created a little Java program to do just that, and was able to put out a text file with 100,000 lines, each line being an SQL INSERT statement for a new random record. However, with anything much bigger than 100,000 lines, I had problems either opening/using the text file in any text editor, or copying/pasting the text to the windows clipboard and then into SQL Developer so I could execute it as a script. I'm probably overlooking something really obvious, or doing something really stupid. There has got to be a better way to do this, but I couldn't find anything through Google or Stackoverflow or Superuser. Thanks!

  Is there a way to have VIM do incremental search on text files? Vim already does incremental search within the currently open file. Examples of programs that demonstrate the type of search I'm trying to accomplish are Notational Velocity for MacOS, Resop for windows or SimpleNote for the web. These apps do an instant or incremental search in the files of a specific directory and make it easy/fast to narrow down the file you are looking for or create a new file. I use both but would rather live in one editor.(that being VIM) Is there some plug in that would do this?

• On Windows 7, how can I tell if a recording is multi-channel without third party tools?

  A customer has an audio that is confidential and can't send it to me. He also would not like to install other tools. He has a basic Windows 7 install. Is there any way to tell whether the recording is one channel or two channel? Normally, I would just get the audio and soxi it. Or, I would tell him to install Audacity or equivalent sound editor and open it up. I also thought that if you right clicked and looked at the size, bit rate, and length, you could get number of channels but bit rate already factors in number of channels. Sorry I'm not giving you a lot to work with.

• Which steps are required to avoid my server being considered as spam sender?

  I'm looking to set up a webmail server that will be used by a lots of users that will receive and send emails. They will also have the possibility to forward emails they receive. I'd like to know which steps are recommanded/required to indicate to others Mail services (GMail, Outlook, etc) that my server is not used as a spam sender (disclaimer : IT's NOT ! :p) but a legitimate one. I know I have to define a SPF TXT records for example, but what others steps would you recommend me to do ? For example, is there a formula like having a proportional number of servers based on the amount of email sent (for having a different IP address) ? (something like sending a maximum of 1M emails / per IP / per day ?) Something else I'm missing ? I tried to search online, but I mostly find how to avoid emails sent with scripts (like PHP) being put in the SPAM folder. I'm looking for a server/dns configuration side. • Lotus Notes 8.0.2 - how to stop all mail showing in customized view

  I am using Lotus Notes 8.0.2 at work and unfortunately the admin restricted changing default folders design. Only little changes are possible (e.g. change columns order) and even them are resetted each time I restart the client. I've created a new view with my desired column order, changed sorting etc. I have only one problem - even though I changed the "view" preference to show messages from the inbox folder only, I keep seeing all mail, regardless of the folder they are placed into. I'm not a Lotus expert and don't really know how to code. Yet, I am surprised as I see in a "simple view" this: uses '(ChangeMeetingType), ...' form AND In folder 'Inbox' And in Formula view only this: SELECT ((Form = "(ChangeMeetingType)") | (Form = "(Return Receipt)") | (Form = "Return Receipt") | (Form = "(ReturnNonReceipt)") | (Form = "ReturnNonReceipt") | (Form = "Memo") | (Form = "Memo") | (Form = "MemoEA") | (Form = "Reply") | (Form = "Reply") | (Form = "Reply With History") | (Form = "Reply With History") | (Form = "To Do") | (Form = "Task") | (Form = "_Document Memo") | (Form = "$DocMemo") | (Form = "Word. • Fastest reliable way to open the terminal?

  I actually had my SUPER_L ( left windows key ) binded to gnome-terminal, but for whatever reason ever since upgrading to 9.04 Ubuntu from 8.10 Intrepid it seemed to break the key binding. It was very handy because I could throw open the terminal with one key ( sorry but alt-f2 and typing gnome-terminal isn't practical for me ). Or perhaps it reset all the keybindings? I remember using xev and some gui type interface that was akin to Win32 registry editor. Anyway, I'm curious as to what you guys use to open the terminal.

• MS Word showing unwanted table borders on screen (but not on print preview)

  I have a MS Word document with a number of tables. The other day when I created it, the tables all had no borders. Today, I opened it up to find that the tables did have borders. However, when I check the border properties on each table, it says that there are no borders. The tables are displayed with cell borders in all view modes except for the reading layout, and they do not show up on print preview. As this document is going to generally be for on-screen viewing, I need to get rid of the borders. How can I accomplish this? (this is a MS Word 2003 *.doc document, in MS Word 2003, which has been the only editor involved.)

  I have a cell that has a fairly archaic String. (It's the mana cost of a Magic: the Gathering spell.) Examples are 3g, 2gg, 3ur, and bg. There are 5 possible letters (g w u b r). I have 5 columns and would like to count at the bottom how many of each it contains. I tried using find() and search() and they work great if the color exists.   I'm using Debian squeeze with Gnome Desktop for all my users. I have a group of machines to set up so that all users should use xpdf as a default viewer (rather than evince). I want this set up to be done by command line (even better, using puppet). I know about xpg-mime command, but the man page says that the default command should not be used as root. I could manually tweek the /etc/gnome/defaults.list files, but I'm looking for a single command I could run to perform the setting without an editor interaction. Any idea ?

  So, I'm looking at rebuilding my home server. My current setup is the following Windows 7 Ultimate 1TB Boot Drive (my smallest drive) Windows Dynamic Spanned volume, continaing 1x 1TB drive, 2x 2TB drives, totalling 5TB. I am upgrading to a hardware RAID controller, and I would like to run Hyper-V server core. However, I want to retain the ability to join my "file server" to a homegroup, so I must use Windows 7. I know VHDs can only be like 127GB or something, so I obviously need to directly connect disks to my Windows 7 machine. Here is my plan: Server Core 2008 R2 (Hyper-V) 1TB Boot Drive (storing VHDs for boot drives of VMs) - possibly in a RAID 1 with my other 1TB drive 5x 2TB drives (1x 2TB drive hot spare), totalling 10TB, directly attached to a Windows 7 VM, for use of homegroup for this array. In the past, I directly attached the windows dynamic volume to a Windows 7 VM, and performance was abysmal. The question is, with hardware RAID, will it really make that much of a difference? Server specs: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz Asus Maximus II Formula (PCI-E x16) 8GB DDR2 RAM PC2-6400 (Yes, I know its a bit out of date)

• How to quickly check if two columns in Excel are equivalent in value?

  I am interested in taking two columns and getting a quick answer on whether they are equivalent in value or not. Let me show you what I mean: So its trivial to make another column (EQUAL) that does a simple compare for each pair of cells in the two columns. It's also trivial to use conditional formatting on one of the two, checking its value against the other. The problem is both of these methods require scanning the third column or the color of one of the columns. Often I am doing this for columns that are very, very long, and visual verification would take too long and neither do I trust my eyes. I could use a pivot table to summarize the EQUAL column and see if any FALSE entries occur. I could also enable filtering and click on the filter on EQUAL and see what entries are shown. Again, all of these methods are time consuming for what seems to be such a simple computational task. What I'm interested in finding out is if there is a single cell formula that answers the question. I attempted one above in the screenshot, but clearly it doesn't do what I expected, since A10 does not equal B10. Anyone know of one that works or some other method that accomplishes this?

• Setting up virtual network in VMware workstation

  I am playing around with VMware workstation and am trying to set up a small virtual network. I am having a little trouble with this I hope somebody can help me out. I want to have all the different virtual machines to have different internal IP adresses so I can ping them SSH etc, from within my windows machine. I am directly connected to the internet without a router, so using a bridged connection does not seem to work. The other options NAT and host-only do not seem to work also. I think i need to create a new adapter. I am testing this out with a virtual image of linux debain 5.0 lenny. I have WMware Workstation 7 with virtual network editor. Can anyone guide me in the right direction.

• Is it possible to dump the names of all the open files in notepad++ to a file?

  So, I dragged and dropped multiple files onto notepad++. The files came from different directories and were selected using different criteria. So, I have many files open in Notepad++. Now I need to have a list of all the open files in another file. Right now, my only option is to script the decisions used to guide me in selecting the files in the first place. Which is probably the best in the long term, but I wonder if there is a quicky one in Notepad++. Some plugin magic or whatever. Suggesting another free editor which has this function is a good option too (not that I am going to ditch notepad++, God forbid)

  When I copy text out of a PDF file and into a text editor, it ends up mangled in a variety of ways. Formatting like bold and italics are lost; soft line breaks within a paragraph of text are converted to hard line breaks; dashes to break a word over two lines are preserved even when they shouldn't be; and single and double quotes are replaced with ? signs. Ideally, I'd like to be able to copy text from a PDF and have formatting converted to HTML codes, "smart quotes" converted to " and ', and line breaks done properly. Is there any way to do this?

As an example: I'm looking at a particular module A.py, in it I see the line import funkyModule, I want to edit that module so I just type in the command :pyed funkyModule and the pyed vim-command automatically finds the file funkyModule.py (or funkyModule/__init__.py) where ever it occurs on the python path. • Batch convert of Word docs with images to HTML

  OK, here is my situation: I made a knowledge base for a company, they have about 500 word documents with screenshots in them explaining procedures and such. I can easily paste the text into the cms wysiwyg editor on the knowledge base but the images need to be uploaded one at a time, then sized and placed in the article. Question: Is there any suggestions for an automatic method to to convert the documents to html with the appropriate image tags and links to the images in them, and export/package the images for ftp upload? I can already convert them to HTML automatically using a batch file and a program, but converting the images to the correct tags with href link, then exporting them for ftp is where i need some help. Might not even be possible, but if anyone has tried to do something like this I would like to here how you approached this.

  I'm a video editor working with large HD files. I am building a new computer and need some help. I will be running 2 hard drives. One with the operating system and all the programs. And one with all the project files I will be working from. I am keeping these seperate. I will be purchasing a 10k rpm hard drive. So i will have a 10k rpm drive, and a 7200rpm drive. Should I put the OS on the faster drive, or put my working files on the faster drive?

• Opening a Corrupted winmail.dat file

  I have a set of winmail.dat files that apparently have evolved from a set of emails with corrupted headers. It looks like Exchange 2010 changed the headers around sometime last September and basically rendered exported .eml files unable to open. Now the HTML/PlainText emails seem to do ok, but the files that use RichText (specifically Microsoft's TNEF format) will not open in any program, Microsoft or not. I've attempted to use many different non-Microsoft converters and they see it as a corrupted message as well. If I remove the headers of the email, rename it as a winmail.dat file, some emails will open in Word, but most won't. If you take a look at the email in a text editor, there are null characters EVERYWHERE that distort the email itself. Anybody have any experience with this and/or suggestions on how to at least open it?
