  • Valgrind says "stack allocation," I say "heap allocation"

    - by Joel J. Adamson
    Dear Friends, I am trying to trace a segfault with valgrind. I get the following message from valgrind: ==3683== Conditional jump or move depends on uninitialised value(s) ==3683== at 0x4C277C5: sparse_mat_mat_kron (sparse.c:165) ==3683== by 0x4C2706E: rec_mating (rec.c:176) ==3683== by 0x401C1C: age_dep_iterate (age_dep.c:287) ==3683== by 0x4014CB: main (age_dep.c:92) ==3683== Uninitialised value was created by a stack allocation ==3683== at 0x401848: age_dep_init_params (age_dep.c:131) ==3683== ==3683== Conditional jump or move depends on uninitialised value(s) ==3683== at 0x4C277C7: sparse_mat_mat_kron (sparse.c:165) ==3683== by 0x4C2706E: rec_mating (rec.c:176) ==3683== by 0x401C1C: age_dep_iterate (age_dep.c:287) ==3683== by 0x4014CB: main (age_dep.c:92) ==3683== Uninitialised value was created by a stack allocation ==3683== at 0x401848: age_dep_init_params (age_dep.c:131) However, here's the offending line: /* allocate mating table */ age_dep_data->mtable = malloc (age_dep_data->geno * sizeof (double *)); if (age_dep_data->mtable == NULL) error (ENOMEM, ENOMEM, nullmsg, __LINE__); for (int j = 0; j < age_dep_data->geno; j++) { 131=> age_dep_data->mtable[j] = calloc (age_dep_data->geno, sizeof (double)); if (age_dep_data->mtable[j] == NULL) error (ENOMEM, ENOMEM, nullmsg, __LINE__); } What gives? I thought any call to malloc or calloc allocated heap space; there is no other variable allocated here, right? Is it possible there's another allocation going on (the offending stack allocation) that I'm not seeing? You asked to see the code, here goes: /* Copyright 2010 Joel J. • PayPal integration woes: PDT hangs on return to site

    - by Tom
    Hi, I'm implementing PayPal IPN & PDT. After some headache & time at the sandbox, IPN is working well and PDT returns the correct $_GET data. The implementation is as follows: Pass user ID in form to PayPal User buys product and triggers IPN which updates database for given user ID PDT returns transaction ID when user returns to site The return page says "please wait" and repeat-Ajax-checks for the transaction status User is redirected to success/failure page Everything works well, EXCEPT that when using the PayPal ready PHP code for PDT to do a return POST, the page hangs. PayPal waits for a response and the user never gets back to my site. I'm not getting a fail status, just nothing. The funny thing is that once the unknown error occurs, my test domain becomes unresponsive for a short period. The code (PHP): https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/xcl/rec/pdt-code-outside If I comment out the POST back, it all works fine. I'm able to pin down the problem to once the code enters the while{} loop. Unfortunately, I'm not experienced enough to write a replacement from scratch for the PayPal code, so would really appreciate any ideas on what might be wrong. The POST back goes to ssl://www.sandbox.paypal.com, and I'm using button code and an authorisation token that have all been created via a sandbox test account. Thanks in advance.

  • Can parser combinators be made efficient?

    - by Jon Harrop
    Around 6 years ago, I benchmarked my own parser combinators in OCaml and found that they were ~5× slower than the parser generators on offer at the time. I recently revisited this subject and benchmarked Haskell's Parsec vs a simple hand-rolled precedence climbing parser written in F# and was surprised to find the F# to be 25× faster than the Haskell. Here's the Haskell code I used to read a large mathematical expression from file, parse and evaluate it: import Control.Applicative import Text.Parsec hiding ((<|>)) expr = chainl1 term ((+) <$ char '+' <|> (-) <$ char '-') term = chainl1 fact ((*) <$ char '*' <|> div <$ char '/') fact = read <$> many1 digit <|> char '(' *> expr <* char ')' eval :: String -> Int eval = either (error . show) id . parse expr "" . filter (/= ' ') main :: IO () main = do file <- readFile "expr" putStr $ show $ eval file putStr "\n" and here's my self-contained precedence climbing parser in F#: let rec (|Expr|) (P(f, xs)) = Expr(loop (' ', f, xs)) and loop = function | ' ' as oop, f, ('+' | '-' as op)::P(g, xs) | (' ' | '+' | '-' as oop), f, ('*' | '/' as op)::P(g, xs) -> let h, xs = loop (op, g, xs) let op = match op with | '+' -> (+) | '-' -> (-) | '*' -> (*) | '/' -> (/) loop (oop, op f h, xs) | _, f, xs -> f, xs and (|P|) = function | '('::Expr(f, ')'::xs) -> P(f, xs) | c::xs when '0' <= c && c <= '9' -> P(int(string c), xs) My impression is that even state-of-the-art parser combinators waste a lot of time back tracking. Is that correct? If so, is it possible to write parser combinators that generate state machines to obtain competitive performance or is it necessary to use code generation?

  • F# Seq.initInfinite giving StackOverflowException

    - by TrueWill
    I'm learning F#, and I am having trouble understanding why this crashes. It's an attempt to solve Project Euler problem 2. let rec fibonacci n = if n = 1 then 1 elif n = 2 then 2 else fibonacci (n - 1) + fibonacci (n - 2) let debugfibonacci n = printfn "CALC: %d" n fibonacci n let isEven n = n % 2 = 0 let isUnderLimit n = n < 55 let getSequence = //[1..30] Seq.initInfinite (fun n -> n) |> Seq.map debugfibonacci |> Seq.filter isEven |> Seq.takeWhile isUnderLimit Seq.iter (fun x -> printfn "%d" x) getSequence The final version would call a sum function (and would have a higher limit than 55), but this is learning code. As is, this gives a StackOverflowException. However, if I comment in the [1..30] and comment out the Seq.initInfinite, I get: CALC: 1 CALC: 2 2 CALC: 3 CALC: 4 CALC: 5 8 CALC: 6 CALC: 7 CALC: 8 34 CALC: 9 CALC: 10 CALC: 11 It appears to be generating items on demand, as I would expect in LINQ. So why does it blow up when used with initInfinite?

  • Drag and Drop in Silverlight with F# and Asynchronous Workflows

    - by knotig
    Hello everyone! I'm trying to implement drag and drop in Silverlight using F# and asynchronous workflows. I'm simply trying to drag around a rectangle on the canvas, using two loops for the the two states (waiting and dragging), an idea I got from Tomas Petricek's book "Real-world Functional Programming", but I ran into a problem: Unlike WPF or WinForms, Silverlight's MouseEventArgs do not carry information about the button state, so I can't return from the drag-loop by checking if the left mouse button is no longer pressed. I only managed to solve this by introducing a mutable flag. Would anyone have a solution for this, that does not involve mutable state? Here's the relevant code part (please excuse the sloppy dragging code, which snaps the rectangle to the mouse pointer): type MainPage() as this = inherit UserControl() do Application.LoadComponent(this, new System.Uri("/SilverlightApplication1;component/Page.xaml", System.UriKind.Relative)) let layoutRoot : Canvas = downcast this.FindName("LayoutRoot") let rectangle1 : Rectangle = downcast this.FindName("Rectangle1") let mutable isDragged = false do rectangle1.MouseLeftButtonUp.Add(fun _ -> isDragged <- false) let rec drag() = async { let! args = layoutRoot.MouseMove |> Async.AwaitEvent if (isDragged) then Canvas.SetLeft(rectangle1, args.GetPosition(layoutRoot).X) Canvas.SetTop(rectangle1, args.GetPosition(layoutRoot).Y) return! drag() else return() } let wait() = async { while true do let! args = Async.AwaitEvent rectangle1.MouseLeftButtonDown isDragged <- true do! drag() } Async.StartImmediate(wait()) () Thank you very much for your time!

  • Syntax error beyond end of program

    - by a_m0d
    I am experimenting with writing a toy compiler in ocaml. Currently, I am trying to implement the offside rule for my lexer. However, I am having some trouble with the ocaml syntax (the compiler errors are extremely un-informative). The code below (33 lines of it) causes an error on line 34, beyond the end of the source code. I am unsure what is causing this error. open Printf let s = (Stack.create():int Stack.t); let rec check x = ( if Stack.is_empty s then Stack.push x s else if Stack.top s < x then ( Stack.push x s; printf "INDENT\n"; ) else if Stack.top s > x then ( printf "DEDENT\n"; Stack.pop s; check x; ) else printf "MATCHED\n"; ); let main () = ( check 0; check 4; check 6; check 8; check 5; ); let _ = Printexc.print main () Ocaml output: File "lexer.ml", line 34, characters 0-0: Error: Syntax error Can someone help me work out what the error is caused by and help me on my way to fixing it?

  • C# XML export for Excel table using XmlDocument

    I am trying to write the following into an XML document: <head> <xml> <x:ExcelWorkbook> <x:ExcelWorksheets> <x:ExcelWorksheet> other code here </x:ExcelWorksheet> </x:ExcelWorksheets> </x:ExcelWorkbook> </xml> </head> However, if I use the following code, it strips out the 'x:'. System.Xml.XmlDocument document = new System.Xml.XmlDocument(); System.Xml.XmlElement htmlNode = document.CreateElement("html"); htmlNode.SetAttribute("xmlns:o", "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"); htmlNode.SetAttribute("xmlns:x", "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:excel"); htmlNode.SetAttribute("xmlns", "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40"); document.AppendChild(htmlNode); System.Xml.XmlElement headNode = document.CreateElement("head"); htmlNode.AppendChild(headNode); headNode.AppendChild( document.CreateElement("xml")).AppendChild( document.CreateElement("x:ExcelWorkbook"))).AppendChild( document.CreateElement("x:ExcelWorksheets")).AppendChild( document.CreateElement("x:ExcelWorksheet")).InnerText="other code here"; How can I stop this from happening? Thanks!

  • Python: two loops at once

    - by Stephan Meijer
    I've got a problem: I am new to Python and I want to do multiple loops. I want to run a WebSocket client (Autobahn) and I want to run a loop which shows the filed which are edited in a specific folder (pyinotify or else Watchdog). Both are running forever, Great. Is there a way to run them at once and send a message via the WebSocket connection while I'm running the FileSystemWatcher, like with callbacks, multithreading, multiprocessing or just separate files? factory = WebSocketClientFactory("ws://localhost:8888/ws", debug=False) factory.protocol = self.webSocket connectWS(factory) reactor.run() If we run this, it will have success. But if we run this: factory = WebSocketClientFactory("ws://localhost:8888/ws", debug=False) factory.protocol = self.webSocket connectWS(factory) reactor.run() # Websocket client running now,running the filewatcher wm = pyinotify.WatchManager() mask = pyinotify.IN_DELETE | pyinotify.IN_CREATE # watched events class EventHandler(pyinotify.ProcessEvent): def process_IN_CREATE(self, event): print "Creating:", event.pathname def process_IN_DELETE(self, event): print "Removing:", event.pathname handler = EventHandler() notifier = pyinotify.Notifier(wm, handler) wdd = wm.add_watch('/tmp', mask, rec=True) notifier.loop() This will create 2 loops, but since we already have a loop, the code after 'reactor.run()' will not run at all.. For your information: this project is going to be a sync client. Thanks a lot!

  • Combine Lists with Same Heads in a 2D List (OCaml)

    - by Atticus
    Hi guys, I'm working with a list of lists in OCaml, and I'm trying to write a function that combines all of the lists that share the same head. This is what I have so far, and I make use of the List.hd built-in function, but not surprisingly, I'm getting the failure "hd" error: let rec combineSameHead list nlist = match list with | [] -> []@nlist | h::t -> if List.hd h = List.hd (List.hd t) then combineSameHead t nlist@uniq(h@(List.hd t)) else combineSameHead t nlist@h;; So for example, if I have this list: [[Sentence; Quiet]; [Sentence; Grunt]; [Sentence; Shout]] I want to combine it into: [[Sentence; Quiet; Grunt; Shout]] The function uniq I wrote just removes all duplicates within a list. Please let me know how I would go about completing this. Thanks in advance!

  • LINQ to SQL Where Clause Optional Criteria

    - by RSolberg
    I am working with a LINQ to SQL query and have run into an issue where I have 4 optional fields to filter the data result on. By optional, I mean has the choice to enter a value or not. Specifically, a few text boxes that could have a value or have an empty string and a few drop down lists that could have had a value selected or maybe not... For example: using (TagsModelDataContext db = new TagsModelDataContext()) { var query = from tags in db.TagsHeaders where tags.CST.Equals(this.SelectedCust.CustCode.ToUpper()) && Utility.GetDate(DateTime.Parse(this.txtOrderDateFrom.Text)) <= tags.ORDDTE && Utility.GetDate(DateTime.Parse(this.txtOrderDateTo.Text)) >= tags.ORDDTE select tags; this.Results = query.ToADOTable(rec => new object[] { query }); } Now I need to add the following fields/filters, but only if they are supplied by the user. Product Number - Comes from another table that can be joined to TagsHeaders. PO Number - a field within the TagsHeaders table. Order Number - Similar to PO #, just different column. Product Status - If the user selected this from a drop down, need to apply selected value here. The query I already have is working great, but to complete the function, need to be able to add these 4 other items in the where clause, just don't know how!

  • f# pattern matching with types

    - by philbrowndotcom
    I'm trying to recursively print out all an objects properties and sub-type properties etc. My object model is as follows... type suggestedFooWidget = { value: float ; hasIncreasedSinceLastPeriod: bool ; } type firmIdentifier = { firmId: int ; firmName: string ; } type authorIdentifier = { authorId: int ; authorName: string ; firm: firmIdentifier ; } type denormalizedSuggestedFooWidgets = { id: int ; ticker: string ; direction: string ; author: authorIdentifier ; totalAbsoluteWidget: suggestedFooWidget ; totalSectorWidget: suggestedFooWidget ; totalExchangeWidget: suggestedFooWidget ; todaysAbsoluteWidget: suggestedFooWidget ; msdAbsoluteWidget: suggestedFooWidget ; msdSectorWidget: suggestedFooWidget ; msdExchangeWidget: suggestedFooWidget ; } And my recursion is based on the following pattern matching... let rec printObj (o : obj) (sb : StringBuilder) (depth : int) let props = o.GetType().GetProperties() let enumer = props.GetEnumerator() while enumer.MoveNext() do let currObj = (enumer.Current : obj) ignore <| match currObj with | :? string as s -> sb.Append(s.ToString()) | :? bool as c -> sb.Append(c.ToString()) | :? int as i -> sb.Append(i.ToString()) | :? float as i -> sb.Append(i.ToString()) | _ -> printObj currObj sb (depth + 1) sb In the debugger I see that currObj is of type string, int, float, etc but it always jumps to the defualt case at the bottom. Any idea why this is happening?

  • F# ref-mutable vars vs object fields

    - by rwallace
    I'm writing a parser in F#, and it needs to be as fast as possible (I'm hoping to parse a 100 MB file in less than a minute). As normal, it uses mutable variables to store the next available character and the next available token (i.e. both the lexer and the parser proper use one unit of lookahead). My current partial implementation uses local variables for these. Since closure variables can't be mutable (anyone know the reason for this?) I've declared them as ref: let rec read file includepath = let c = ref ' ' let k = ref NONE let sb = new StringBuilder() use stream = File.OpenText file let readc() = c := stream.Read() |> char // etc I assume this has some overhead (not much, I know, but I'm trying for maximum speed here), and it's a little inelegant. The most obvious alternative would be to create a parser class object and have the mutable variables be fields in it. Does anyone know which is likely to be faster? Is there any consensus on which is considered better/more idiomatic style? Is there another option I'm missing?

  • OCaml delimiters and scopes

    - by Jack
    Hello! I'm learning OCaml and although I have years of experience with imperative programming languages (C, C++, Java) I'm getting some problems with delimiters between declarations or expressions in OCaml syntax. Basically I understood that I have to use ; to concatenate expressions and the value returned by the sequence will be the one of last expression used, so for example if I have exp1; exp2; exp3 it will be considered as an expression that returns the value of exp3. Starting from this I could use let t = something in exp1; exp2; exp3 and it should be ok, right? When am I supposed to use the double semicol ;;? What does it exactly mean? Are there other delimiters that I must use to avoid syntax errors? I'll give you an example: let rec satisfy dtmc state pformula = match (state, pformula) with (state, `Next sformula) -> let s = satisfy_each dtmc sformula and adder a state = let p = 0.; for i = 0 to dtmc.matrix.rows do p <- p +. get dtmc.matrix i state.index done; a +. p in List.fold_left adder 0. s | _ -> [] It gives me syntax error on | but I don't get why.. what am I missing? This is a problem that occurs often and I have to try many different solutions until it suddently works :/ A side question: declaring with let instead that let .. in will define a var binding that lasts whenever after it has been defined? What I basically ask is: what are the delimiters I have to use and when I have to use them. In addition are there differences I should consider while using the interpreter ocaml instead that the compiler ocamlc? Thanks in advance!

  • Recreating http request with cURL incl. files

    - by Toby
    I consistently get the error 'failed creating formpost data' from the below code, the same thing works perfectly on my local testing server, but on my shared host it throws the error. The sample part is just to simulate building the array with both files and non-file data. Essentially all I'm trying to do here is redirect the same http request to another server, but I'm running into so many troubles. $count=count($_FILES['photographs']['tmp_name']); $file_posts=array('samplesample' => 'ladeda'); for($i=0;$i<$count;$i++) { if(!empty($_FILES['photographs']['name'][$i])) { $fn = genRandomString(); $file_posts[$fn] = "@".$_FILES['photographs']['tmp_name'][$i]; } } $ch = curl_init(); curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_URL,"http://myurl/wp-content/plugins/autol/rec.php"); curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_USERAGENT, "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows NT 5.0)"); curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_HEADER,TRUE); curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_POST,TRUE); curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS,$file_posts); curl_exec($ch); print curl_error($ch); curl_close($ch);

    I set up the SimpleModal plugin to work from our Ad server(Real 24/7). Essentially, attempting to make an interstitial ad. I serve a popupAd.js file from the Ad Server to our homepage(index.php), Here is the code for popupAd.js: $(document).ready(function() { $.modal('<iframe src="/welcomeAd.htm" height="525" width="562" style="border:0;" scrolling="no"/>', { closeHTML: "<a href='#' title='Close' align='right' style='color:#666>(X) Continue to website</a>", containerCss: { backgroundColor: '#fff', borderColor: "#0063dc", height: 525, padding: 0, width: 562, }, overlayCss:{ backgroundColor:"#fff", }, opacity:100, overlayClose: true }); }); This opens a modal window on the homepage which then loads welcomeAd.htm which contain nothing other than the ad call to the creative. Here is the code: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/1999/REC-html401-19991224/loose.dtd"> <html> <head> <title>Company Name</title> <!------ AD SERVER SETUP begin ------> <!------ OAS SERVER SETUP end ------> </head> <body style="margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%"> <script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript"> <!-- AD SERVER CALL; //--> </script> </body> </html> This all works in FF but does nothing in IE, of which I am running IE7. Also, the closeHTML doesn't show up in Safari, though, the ad does.

  • Preserve name of file using cURL to transfer files

    - by Toby
    I'm transferring files from an existing http request using cURL like so... $postargs = array( 'nonfilefield' =>'nonfilevalue', 'fileentry' => '@'.$_FILES['thefile']['tmp_name'][0] ); $ch = curl_init('http://localhost/curl/rec.php'); curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_USERAGENT, "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows NT 5.0)"); curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, true); curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_POST,TRUE); curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS,$postargs); curl_exec($ch); curl_close($ch); The only way I can get this to work is using the tmp_name, without this it won't send. However, I then lose the name value for when I want to name the file later. Is there some way to do this preserving the $_FILES array as it normally would be without curl? I'm also using an array of file fields in my script, so at the moment I have to convert my multidimensional array into a single dimension for this to work

  • F# why my recursion is faster than Seq.exists?

    - by user38397
    I am pretty new to F#. I'm trying to understand how I can get a fast code in F#. For this, I tried to write two methods (IsPrime1 and IsPrime2) for benchmarking. My code is: // Learn more about F# at http://fsharp.net open System open System.Diagnostics #light let isDivisible n d = n % d = 0 let IsPrime1 n = Array.init (n-2) ((+) 2) |> Array.exists (isDivisible n) |> not let rec hasDivisor n d = match d with | x when x < n -> (n % x = 0) || (hasDivisor n (d+1)) | _ -> false let IsPrime2 n = hasDivisor n 2 |> not let SumOfPrimes max = [|2..max|] |> Array.filter IsPrime1 |> Array.sum let maxVal = 20000 let s = new Stopwatch() s.Start() let valOfSum = SumOfPrimes maxVal s.Stop() Console.WriteLine valOfSum Console.WriteLine("IsPrime1: {0}", s.ElapsedMilliseconds) ////////////////////////////////// s.Reset() s.Start() let SumOfPrimes2 max = [|2..max|] |> Array.filter IsPrime2 |> Array.sum let valOfSum2 = SumOfPrimes2 maxVal s.Stop() Console.WriteLine valOfSum2 Console.WriteLine("IsPrime2: {0}", s.ElapsedMilliseconds) Console.ReadKey() IsPrime1 takes 760 ms while IsPrime2 takes 260ms for the same result. What's going on here and how I can make my code even faster?

  • Install XP Mode with VirtualBox Using the VMLite Plugin

    - by Mysticgeek
    Would you like to run XP Mode, but prefer Sun’s VirtualBox for virtualization?  Thanks to the free VMLite plugin, you can quickly and easily run XP Mode in or alongside VirtualBox. Yesterday we showed you one method to install XP Mode in VirtualBox, unfortunately in that situation you lose XP’s activation, and it isn’t possible to reactivate it. Today we show you a tried and true method for running XP mode in VirtualBox and integrating it seamlessly with Windows 7. Note: You need to have Windows 7 Professional or above to use XP Mode in this manner. Install XP Mode Make sure you’re logged in with Administrator rights for the entire process. The first thing you’ll want to do is install XP Mode on your system (link below). You don’t need to install Windows Virtual PC. Go through and install XP Mode using the defaults. Install VirtualBox Next you’ll need to install VirtualBox 3.1.2 or higher if it isn’t installed already. If you have an older version of VirtualBox installed, make sure to update it. During setup you’re notified that your network connection will be reset. Check the box next to Always trust software from “Sun Microsystems, Inc.” then click Install.   Setup only takes a couple of minutes, and does not require a reboot…which is always nice. Install VMLite XP Mode Plugin The next thing we’ll need to install is the VMLite XP Mode Plugin. Again Installation is simple following the install wizard. During the install like with VirtualBox you’ll be asked to install the device software. After it’s installed go to the Start menu and run VMLite Wizard as Administrator. Select the location of the XP Mode Package which by default should be in C:\Program Files\Windows XP Mode. Accept the EULA…and notice that it’s meant for Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions. Next, name the machine, choose the install folder, and type in a password. Select if you want Automatic Updates turned on or not. Wait while the process completes then click Finish.   The VMLite XP Mode will set up to run the first time. That is all there is to this section. You can run XP Mode from within the VMLite Workstation right away. XP Mode is fully activated already, and the Guest Additions are already installed, so there’s nothing else you need to do!  XP Mode is the whole way ready to use. Integration with VirtualBox Since we installed the VMLite Plugin, when you open VirtualBox you’ll see it listed as one of your machines and you can start it up from here.   Here we see VMLite XP Mode running in Sun VirtualBox. Integrate with Windows 7 To integrate it with Windows 7 click on Machine \ Seamless Mode…   Here you can see the XP menu and Taskbar will be placed on top of Windows 7. From here you can access what you need from XP Mode.   Here we see XP running on Virtual Box in Seamless Mode. We have the old XP WordPad sitting next to the new Windows 7 version of WordPad. This works so seamlessly you forget if your working in XP or Windows 7. In this example we have Windows Home Server Console running in Windows 7, while installing MSE from IE 6 in XP Mode. At the top of the screen you will still have access to the VMs controls.   You can click the button to exit Seamless Mode, or simply hit the right “CTRL+L” Conclusion This is a very slick way to run XP Mode in VirtualBox on any machine that doesn’t have Hardware Virtualization. This method also doesn’t lose the XP Mode activation and is actually extremely easy to set up. If you prefer VMware (like we do), Check out how to run XP Mode on machines without Hardware Virtualization capability, and also how to create an XP Mode for Vista and Windows 7 Home Premium. • Ask How-To Geek: Learning the Office Ribbon, Booting to USB with an Old BIOS, and Snapping Windows

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
    You’ve got questions and we’ve got answers. Today we highlight how to master the new Office interface, USB boot a computer with outdated BIOS, and snap windows to preset locations. Learning the New Office Ribbon Dear How-To Geek, I feel silly asking this (in light of how long the new Office interface has been out) but my company finally got around to upgrading from Windows XP and Office 2000 so the new interface it totally new to me. Can you recommend any resources for quickly learning the Office ribbon and the new changes? I feel completely lost after two decades of the old Office interface. Help! Sincerely, Where the Hell is Everything? Dear Where the Hell, We think most people were with you at some point in the last few years. “Where the hell is…” could possibly be the slogan for the new ribbon interface. You could browse through some of the dry tutorials online or even get a weighty book on the topic but the best way to learn something new is to get hands on. Ribbon Hero turns learning the new Office features and ribbon layout into a game. It’s no vigorous round of Team Fortress mind you, but it’s significantly more fun than reading a training document. Check out how to install and configure Ribbon Hero here. You’ll be teaching your coworkers new tricks in no time. Boot via USB with an Old BIOS Dear How-To Geek, I’m trying to repurpose some old computers by updating them with lightweight Linux distros but the BIOS on most of the machines is ancient and creaky. How ancient? It doesn’t even support booting from a USB device! I have a large flash drive that I’ve turned into a master installation tool for jobs like this but I can’t use it. The computers in question have USB ports; they just aren’t recognized during the boot process. What can I do? USB Bootin’ in Boise Dear USB Bootin’, It’s great you’re working to breathe life into old hardware! You’ve run into one of the limitations of older BIOSes, USB was around but nobody was thinking about booting off of it. Fortunately if you have a computer old enough to have that kind of BIOS it’s likely to also has a floppy drive or a CDROM drive. While you could make a bootable CDROM for your application we understand that you want to keep using the master USB installer you’ve made. In light of that we recommend PLoP Boot Manager. Think of it like a boot manager for your boot manager. Using it you can create a bootable floppy or CDROM that will enable USB booting of your master USB drive. Make a CD and a floppy version and you’ll have everything in your toolkit you need for future computer refurbishing projects. Read up on creating bootable media with PLoP Boot Manager here. Snapping Windows to Preset Coordinates Dear How-To Geek, Once upon a time I had a company laptop that came with a little utility that snapped windows to preset areas of the screen. This was long before the snap-to-side features in Windows 7. You could essentially configure your screen into a grid pattern of your choosing and then windows would neatly snap into those grids. I have no idea what it was called or if was anymore than a gimmick from the computer manufacturer, but I’d really like to have it on my new computer! Bend and Snap in San Francisco, Dear Bend and Snap, If we had to guess, we’d guess your company must have had a set of laptops from Acer as the program you’re describing sounds exactly like Acer GridVista. Fortunately for you the application was extremely popular and Acer released it independently of their hardware. If, by chance, you’ve since upgraded to a multiple monitor setup the app even supports multiple monitors—many of the configurations are handy for arranging IM windows and other auxiliary communication tools. Check out our guide to installing and configuring Acer GridVista here for more information. Have a question you want to put before the How-To Geek staff? Over the years, Oracle has been making big investments in Java for ARM-based devices. This week, Oracle and ARM announced further expanding their collaboration on a number of fronts, from additional hardware platforms, porting layers, and optimized communication protocols, to 64-bit ARMv8 support, and IoT architectures. Henrik Stahl, VP of Product Management in the Java Platform Group at Oracle, just posted an excellent summary: “ARM TechCon 2013: Oracle, ARM expand collaboration on servers, Internet of Things”. Highly recommended reading.
