• Programmatically allow write access for a Registry key

  Hi everybody, I need to programmatically modify the Access Descriptors on a known Registry key during product installation. The way I want it to work is: The installer is run in Administrative mode. A Registry key is created. A function (the one I need) queries the ACL from the key. If this function finds that the group 'Users' already has write access, nothing should be done. If not, it should add a new permission allowing write access to the 'Users' group. The permissions are saved for the Registry key. This question is similar to Setting Registry key write permissions using .NET, however, I need a C++/Win32 implementation. Thanks in advance

• FIFO implementation

  While implementing a FIFO I have used the following structure: struct Node { T info_; Node* link_; Node(T info, Node* link=0): info_(info), link_(link) {} }; I think this a well known trick for lots of STL containers (for example for List). Is this a good practice? What it means for compiler when you say that Node has a member with a type of it's pointer? Is this a kind of infinite loop? And finally, if this is a bad practice, how I could implement a better FIFO. EDIT: People, this is all about implemenation. I am enough familiar with STL library, and know a plenty of containers from several libraries. Just I want to discuss with people who can gave a good implementation or a good advice.

  Hi all, I like to learn computer science and programming, but i don't know where and how to start. For the past two months, i have been researching on types of programming, i found my interest in desktop programming, and also found this subjects (discrete maths, logic, algorithms, data structures, artificial intelligence, simulation) said to be a most known (subjects). Well as a beginner, i have no understanding on what type of language or books that can cover all these subjects, or even how to write any code. Secondly, am as young as you can guess and i need a language to start with that will be easy for me to understand, and books to read. Thank you.

• Animation with Initial Velocity

  I've been trying to solve this problem for a number of days now but I must be missing something. Known Variables: vi = Initial Velocity t = Animation Duration d = Distance The function I'm trying to create: D(t) = the current distance for a given time Using this information I want to be able to create a smooth animation curve with varying velocity (ease-in/ease-out). The animation must be able ease-in from an initial velocity. The animation must be exactly t seconds and must be travel exactly d units. The curve should lean towards the average velocity with acceleration occurring at the beginning and the end portions of the curve. I'm open to extra configuration variables. The best I've been able to come up with is something that doesn't factor in the initial velocity. I'm hoping someone smarter can help me out. ;) Thank you! p.s. • Sum value of XML attributes using PowerShell 2.0

  I have a directory with XML files. I quickly want to go through them and sum upp the value stored in one attribute. I have figured out how to fidn the nodes I am interested in. For example: (Select-Xml -Path .\*.xml -XPath "//*[@Attribue = 'valueImlookingfor']").Count This command gives me the count of elements in all of the XML files in the current directory which has the value "valueImlookingfor" in the "Attribue". I want to sum up all the values of the "Attribute", not count them. What would be the best way to do this in PowerShell? I am new to PowerShell so this may be trivial but un-known to me... All tips are much appreciated :-)

• Problems compiling an external library on linux...

  So I am trying to compile the libssh2 library on linux, but when I try to compile the example it comes up with a lot of errors, and even though I include the headerfile it asks for, it still asks for it. • IIS reveals internal IP address in content-location field - fix

  Referring: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q218180/, there is a known issue in IIS4/5/6 whereby it will reveal the internal IP of a web server in the content-location field of the HTTP header. We have IIS 6. I have tried the fix suggested, but it has not worked. The website is configured to send all requests to ASP.NET, and I am wondering if this is why the fix, which addresses IIS configuration, has not worked for us. If this is the case, how would we fix this in ASP.NET? We need to fix this issue in order to pass a security audit.

• SQLite multi process access

  Hello, We are using SQLite in a multi processes and multi threaded application. The SQLite database files are encrypted using the embedded SQLite encryption. The FAQ states that SQLite should be able to manage multi process accesses using locks mechanism. We are experiencing a strange problem: When many threads are accessing the same database file, sometime constrains violations occur, more specifically - a field with a unique constrain is getting duplicate values after calling "insert or replace" statement. It happens quite often now, that we are using the encryption. Before we started using SQLite encryption we did not notice such a behavior. Are there any specific known issues with this?

• UnknownHostException for server java

  I am not able to connect to an remote known server through Java code; the exception while connecting is java.net.NoRouteToHostException: No route to host. But strangely, I am able to connect to same server through ssh. Details: Simple Java client when tries to establish connection with Java standalone server, while conneting the exception occurs at following statement: Socket socket = new Socket(ServerIP ServerPort); The port needed is open on server so that externally request can come in. Again the following is returns false InetAddress.getByName(SERVER_IP).isReachable(1000) The Server is running on Fedora, Java 5. FYI: Java cannot resolve DNS address from AIX: UnknownHostException is almost same to my question, but somehow this is not AIX related; moreover I feel the issue to be more of Network or firewall issue. Please guide me.

  What's the right way to keep ssh host authenticity from being a problem for maven and hudsno builds? I have hudson building my maven project on a VM. When the ESX server with my VMs on it is taxed some of my jobs will stall out stuck in a loop of ssh host authenticity problems. The hosts were in the known hosts file, but during these times the clocks on the slave VMs have drifted far from those of my maven repo. • SSIS FTP Task problem with UNIX server

  Hi, I would like to ask if there's a known issue with the FTP Task of SSIS 2005 on UNIX servers(HP UX B.11.23.). As per checking, we were able to ftp files on Windows Server but not on Unix. Though I can browse the ftp path of the UNIX server from my windows exlporer. I can even manually copy files. But when I tried uploading file thru SSIS FTP task, it does'nt work. Please help.   I am looking for an Open Source alternative to SAAS provided by lablife.org website. Main purpose of the service is to automate daily tasks for life science laboratory. This service was free and nice to use, but when the original company developing this service was bought by BioData they kind of decided to kill and replace it with a new service called labguru. Apparently, a new service has a lot of functionality missing or just bad. That's why I am on a search for an alternative solution. • Play Video on Safari iTouch

  I have a web site that opens iframe for video on page, page uses ajax to pull in videos from selected menu. As expected and understood, on iTouch after selecting video it shows a play button, which brings up video in another screen. However, when the video completes, it returns browser to page prior to one where video was played from. Sequence: - open Page1 - go to Page2 which offers videos to play, in iframe - play video - video completes, returns to Page1, not Page2!! Only happens on iTouch, so must be issue with how control is returned on video completion. Any suggestions? If this is not a known problem, I can work up example (currently, need account on site). • How should the View pull on the Presenter in the MVP pattern

  I have a ASP.NET Web Forms application and I'm using some dynamic controls in the view which depend on stuff that the presenter exposes. Is it okay for the view in this case to pull on the presenter for that data? Is there anything I should be extra careful about when considering testability and a loosely coupled design. The page in this case has it's own page-life cycle and the presenter doesn't know about this. However, the page-life cycle dictates that somethings must occur at specific moments in the page-life cycle. This smells like trouble... Any known pit falls?

  Can WWF handle high throughput scenarios where several dozen records are 'actively' being processed in parallel at any one time? We want to build a workflow process which handles a few thousand records per hour. Each record takes up to a minute to process, because it makes external web service calls. We are testing Windows Workflow Foundation to do this. But our demo programs show processing of each record appear to be running in sequence not in parallel, when we use parallel activities to process several records at once within one workflow instance. Should we use multiple workflow instances or parallel activities? Are there any known patterns for high performance WWF processing?

  I am attempting to write a Genetic Algorithm based on techniques I had picked up from the book "AI Techniques for Game Programmers" that uses a binary encoding and fitness proportionate selection (also known as roulette wheel selection) on the genes of the population that are randomly generated within the program in a two-dimensional array. I recently came across a piece of pseudocode and have tried to implement it, but have come across some problems with the specifics of what I need to be doing. I've checked a number of books and some open-source code and am still struggling to progress. I understand that I have to get the sum of the total fitness of the population, pick a random number between the sum and zero, then if the number is greater than the parents to overwrite it, but I am struggling with the implementation of these ideas. Any help in the implementation of these ideas would be very much appreciated as my Java is rusty.

• Reference platform specific System.Data.SQLite

  I am using SQLite for the unit testing and might use it as a database for local development/staging. The System.Data.SQLite has basically 2 versions: x86 and x64. Correct one should be used for the specific platform. I have 64 bit Win7, other guys in the team might use 32-bit OSs. The server's platform is not known at this stage. If I use 32-bit version of the assembly on 64-bit platform I get BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Data.SQLite'. I believe similar will happen trying to use 64-bit assembly on 32-bit platform. So my question is what is the best way to reference the SQLite assembly so that it does not depend on the platform and people can just use it? It is ok to use 32-bit version of assembly on a 64-bit platform (Maybe there is a switch for that somewhere?).

Problematically, however, the Javascript code isn't run until all images are finished downloading (this includes banner ads). The reason for using window.onload in the first place is due to the fact that the HTML 'document' isn't finished loading yet, when you first try to run your code. • How would I detect horizontal-black lines using ImageMagick?

  So I have what is essentially a spreadsheet in TIFF format. There is some uniformity to it...for example, all the column widths are the same. I want to de-limit this sheet by those known-column widths and basically create lots of little graphic files, one for each cell, and run OCR on them and store it into a database. The problem is that the horizontal lines are not all the same height, so I need to use some kind of graphics library command to check if every pixel across is the same color (i.e. black). And if so, then I know I've reached the height-delimiter for a cell. How would I go about doing that? (I'm using RMagick)

• How well do (D)VCS cooperate with workflows involving several people editing files in the same direc

  Imagine because of tradition that your team's preferred development method involved several people with a shared login, editing files on a build server using vim. [Note that there are well known issues to do with only one person being able to edit a file at once, people going away from their desk and leaving the file locked in vim, system builds/restarts requiring everybody to stop debugging while this occurs. This is not what the question is about] If source control was to be introduced without changing the workflow, would there be much benefit? I am guessing that the commit history won't be much use as it will contain all changes by everybody in big lumps. So it wouldn't really be possible to rewind individual changes apart from at a really big level.
