• Is there a way to hide the Android Device Chooser?

  Whenever I run my app I get the Android Device Chooser dialog: This is happening because I am using the Google APIs for 1.6 and trying to run the application on my Nexus one. Is there any way to make this automatically, or to not check the compatibility? Sometimes when I make a modification and quickly after I save and run the application, Eclipse will build the project and the Android Device Chooser dialog will show briefly and disappear and the app won't run. I have to click run again for it to work. Any workarounds?

• What benefits can Java developer have from moving to a *NIX platform?

  Hi everyone, A friend of mine is a Java developer, who's using *NIX for ages. He claims that *NIX is for real Java geeks, whereas WIN is for dummies (and I'm one of them, according to him) and girls. When I ask him to argue his position, and explain, what's so good for Java developer on *NIX, he starts talking about console, wget, curl and grep. But sorry, wget and curl analogues exist for the WIN platform as well. As for the console - I'm using FAR Commander, and have access to the command line when I need. Moreover, even if I decide moving to *NIX, I will certainly use Netbeans or Eclipse on it, so there will be no big difference. Guys, who use Java on *NIX, could you please give me some real killer examples, when *NIX (any util or technique) dramatically increases Java development productivity (in the way the hints are given in "The Pragmatic Programmer"), or, which is also important, gives more fun from the process. • Flex 4.5 - to long build process

  We are developing an app using flex 4.5. The app runs just fine (no performance issues at all) but it takes us forever to compile and build it. A minor change, like just add a comment or press enter in an mxml file and rebuild takes about 3 minutes. You just cant work that way. It is a large project with about 1300 files. We also use Parsley as IOC container and a beat of cairngorm navigation. We also use Maven (Flex mojos) but I am talking about a normal eclipse build (Ctrl + B). We separated some of the code to a different SWC and all of our graphics are stored in a different resource SWF. Please, Do you have any suggestions? Regards, Ido

• How do I modify the -encoding argument to javac in the Android Ant build system

  Apologies if this is a stupid question - I'm an Android and Ant newbie. I have utf8 encoded source files that I need to compile with the Android Ant build system. By default, the encoding is set to ascii. I'd be very grateful for a pointer to whatever I need to do to let the build system know that my files are utf8. Incidentally, it works fine if I build in Eclipse, but I need to build from the command line. Thanks!

• Read / Write XML file from Java application bundle

  Hi there! I've got an XML file that is parsed and written in my application. From within my IDE (Eclipse) I simply address it like this: Reading: private String xmlFile = "file.xml"; and then I build the document: doc = sax.build(xmlFile); Writing is done like this: writer = new FileWriter("file.xml"); Runs great so far, but after bundling my application, the file is no longer accessible. What exactly do I have to do to make it accessible from within an application bundle? I'm absolutely not familiar with the classpath or whatever I need for that, so please go easy on me! • AVD Failed to Load ~ Failed to Parse Properties ~ Mac OSX

  I'm going to say upfront, please forgive me. I'm a newbie to android development and fairly new to programming. Also on a Mac. You're going to have to talk...real...slow. I can't get an AVD to load. I've tried it from Eclipse and from the Android SDK Manager. Failed multiple times. Received the same error each time, "Failed to parse properties from Users/myname/.android/avd/nameIGaveEmulator/config.ini." I've the forum here and saw that others have had similar problems, but of the answers given, no one came back to say if they worked, and I don't see anyone with a similar problem on a Mac. If the path needs to be "changed" what exactly does that mean and how do I go about doing so?

Does any one know why you would do this? What is a possible use-case / benefit of doing this? • Java Program Design Layout Recommendations?

  I've learned enough to begin writing programs from scratch, but I'm running into the problem of not knowing how to design the layout and implementation of a program. To be more precise, I'm having difficulty finding a good way to come up with an action plan before I dive in to the programming part. I really want to know what classes, methods, and objects I would need beforehand instead of just adding them along the way. My intuition is leading me to using some kind of charting software that gives a hierarchal view of all the classes and methods. I've been using OmniGraffle Pro and while it does seem to work somewhat, I'm still having trouble planning out the program in its entirety. How should I approach this problem? What softwares out there are available to help with this problem? Any good reads out there on this issue? Thanks so much! Edit: Oh yeah, I'm using Eclipse and I code mainly in Java right now.

• Seam app with JBoss 'minimal' Config?

  I'd like to improve the performance of my Seam apps and JBoss appserver, particularly by removing things that aren't necessary in the standard configuration. Ideally, I'd like to be able to run it using the "minimal" profile. Can anyone give me any guidance as to what is needed to run a Seam app using "minimal"? Here are the kind of things my app requires: JPA, using Hibernate with a PostgreSQL backend EJB3 JSF (RichFaces/Facelets) E-mail, eventually, although not required at this particular moment I'll be developing my app using JBoss Tools on Eclipse, so I would also need anything that is required by the tools for development and deployment. I've found that the default configuration just has too many additional components and features installed by default, and that greatly affects performance when I'm trying to develop. • Key Value Observation (ala Cocoa) in GWT ?

  Hi all, There are these 2 frameworks out there in the same "cloud application" space as GWT: Sproutcore and Cappuccino. Cappuccino is Cocoa for the web, Sproutcore is Cocoa-like and one very central idea in both is Key Value Observation where the framework itself provides the glue to change all dependencies of an object when it changes, and you only have to declare those dependencies. • Keeping the application state - deploy/install apk

  I'm trying to have my application minimized when paused and then when it's resumed, it should be restored to its previous state, not recreated. This works perfectly when deploying the application on a device/emulator from Eclipse. The problem occurs when I get the apk (either from bin\ or from Project - Android tools - Export signed application package) and install it on a device with a file browser (Astro): the application is destroyed when paused and then recreated. I can call moveTaskToBack(true); in my activity, yet it will still be recreated when launching it. All the discussions around this are based on achieving the opposite: closing the application when minimizing it. Is there any way of achieving what I want?

• Accessing identical web services using the same client

  Hi. I have some web services and I am creating a web client using ws-import. When creating the client I have this line: MyServiceService service = new MyServiceService(); It works fine as it is. I have the same web services running on another server and I was wondering if I could access them using the same client. Is it possible to change the wsdl url of the client? Ctrl-Space in Eclipse gives me 2 parameters which I can enter into MyServiceService which are URL arg0 and Qname arg1. Is this what I'm looking for? In Java IDE such as Eclipse, if I do not know the classname in a package, I can just type a dot (.) after a package name, then I will get a list of all the classes in that package in the IDE. How I can configure visual studio to do the similar thing, say, if I click a namespace name in a file (for example, using System), or add a dot after the namespace, all the classes in that namespace will be displayed somewhere in the IDE?

• What coding standards do you follow?

  I was just curious what coding standards people followed. I for one use the following: Brackets ALWAYS go on the next line. For instance: int main() { //Blah... } I never use code folding. (Yes my IDE's do support it (Xcode and Eclipse). Put related functions/methods single-spaced, otherwise double space. Here is an example: int foo = 0; printf("%d",foo); those are related while these are not: printf("Hello, World!"); return(0); I don't put else statements on the same line as the closing bracket for the preceding if statement. Most of the time in Java if a program needs multiple try catch statements I will just put the whole thing in one try catch.

• How can I use the Spark library in my ActionScript project?

  I'm using Flare to develop a visualization. Being familiar to Java, Javascript and Eclipse it wasn't a big deal to familiarize myself to developing with Actionscript and Adobe FlashBuilder. I actually found that the learning curve is very flat. However, being new to Actionscript, I can't figure out how to use the Spark libraries that are part of Flex. I tried to add the libraries to the build path, with no success. I guess I'm confused about how Flash, Flex, Actionscript, Spark and Flare work together, even after reading the helpful answers on this question Does anybody know which part of the puzzle I'm missing? • Vim: multi-file editing - having different makes in different splits

  I'm a recent vim convert (from fancy IDEs like eclipse.) I love the :make command in vim and use it extensively; however I also like to edit multiple projects (with separate makefiles.) So usually to edit more than one project I will do pushd project1 vim project1.cpp [suspend signal] pushd ../project2 vim project2.cpp and now I can switch between the two projects with ctrl+z i.e. suspend signal, and fg. When this becomes an issue is when I want to open one project in the context of another so I can do copy/pasting. So if instead in the above I do pushd project1 vim project1.cpp :vsp ../project2/project2.cpp I can edit both concurrently in the same vim process, however I can't effectively build one or the other with the :make command, it will only build project 1. Does anyone have some kind of scheme that gives them the best of both worlds: being able to edit concurrently while still being able to build multiple projects with the :make command all from the same vim process?

• Making a Mac double-clickable application in NetBeans

  I have recently moved to a MacBook Pro, which has meant leaving my beloved JBuilder 2005 behind. Since there is no such thing any more (AFAIK) as a free JBuilder, I'm having to choose a new IDE. I can't live with the code-formatting of Eclipse (yes, I know, it can be customised up the wazoo, but the fact that it will NOT respect my inserted returns means I can't live with it) so I'm seriously considering NetBeans. However, I can't find any way of getting it to build a double-clickable Mac application! (I used to use XCode for this step, but it seems that XCode no longer wants to know about Java...) I cannot be the first person who's wanted to do this...can anyone help me with advice as to how to go about it? Grateful thanks in advance

• Embed a database in the .apk of a distributed application [Android]

  Hi everybody, My question is I think quite simple but I don't think the answer will be... I have quite a lot of content to have in my application to make it run properly, and I'm thinking of putting all of it in a database, and distribute it in an embeded database with the application in the market. The only trouble is that I have no idea of how to do that. I know that I can extract a file .db from Eclipse DDMS with the content of my database, and I suppose I need to put it in the asset folder of my application, but then how to make the application use it to regenerate the application database? • Problem with TabHost UI layout.

  What I'm trying to do is create a layout like this: +--------+ Search |EditText| [Button] +--------+ +---------+ |Tab 1 |---------+ | |Tab 2 | |---------+---------+-----------------+ | ListView Item 1 | | ListView Item 2 | | ListView Item 3 | | ListView Item 4 | | ListView Item 5 | | ListView Item 6 | | ListView Item 7 | | ListView Item 8 | | ListView Item 9 | | ListView Item 10 | +-------------------------------------+ So that's a TextView saying 'Search', an EditText and a button. Then below it the tabs - Tab 1 has a ListView, Tab 2 some other stuff. I can get a simple TabHost setup with two tabs working fine but can't get the above to lay out properly. Any hints ? I'd create the UI in the Eclipse designer and check the XML from that, except the designer doesn't work with TabHost. And DroidDraw doesn't seem to know about TabHost.

The steps That I did bring up the library of abc to my project while my project min sdk 2.2 and max api 15. the problem that I cant set up the style to use it. the error Error retrieving parent for item: No resource found that matches the given name '@style/ Theme.Sherlock'. my code of xml: <resources> <style name="AppTheme" parent="@style/Theme.Sherlock" /> </resources> the java that I use is 1.6. I am runing 4.0.3 avd. I know that you will give me a link for webs but didnt find any thing that can help. I am using eclipse and Sherlock 4.0.3.If you can give me the solution how to do it simple way with instructions. thanks.
