• Do all Mac OS X applications require Admin permissions to 'install'?

  I'm new to the whole Mac OS X operating system. I'm trying to learn and I've got myself a MacBook running Mac OS X 10.7.3. I've created a test user that can not administrate so that I can test out permissions and I've found that I can not do anything in the Applications folder, which includes 'installing' applications (even those drag 'n' drop ones) and creating folders, without entering an Admin name and password. However, I was under the impression that this wasn't the case and you only needed Admin permissions to write to somewhere like Preferences, so can somebody please clarify why it is asking for Admin when I try to drag 'n' drop applications into the Applications folder.

• Mounting NFS share between OSX and Centos VM

  I'm having issues mounting an NFS share I've made on my Mac host (server) from a Centos VM (client). I'm getting a permission denied error. I have this line in /etc/exports on server: /Users/adam/Sites/ 192.168.1.223(rw) and in /etc/fstab on client: 192.168.1.186:/Users/adam/Sites/ /home/adam/Sites/ nfs rw 0 0 I'm sure this is a simple configuration issue, but I've never set up NFS properly before. • Mac Mail import from Entourage failed

  I am trying to import the entire Folder-structure from Entourage 2008 to Mac Mail on a Mac OS X 10.5.8. First I wanted to export the whole E-Mail Database from Entourage to Desktop as a .rge File. The export got aborted through a message which indicated that my Entourage database is corrupt and that I should rebuild it. I then went over to Mac Mail and imported the Entourage Folder-structure through File/import mailboxes.../Entourage. The bulky import did take some time and the progress bar never reached its full length. But at the end the import was successful. When I checked the imported folder-structure in Mac Mail I noticed that quiet a few Subfolders where missing. I checked Console and saw following message. Mail[2899] Applescript Error: aliasForMailImporter got an error: AppleEvent handler failed. Question: What does that mean and what can I do to get my subfolder-structure over completely?

  Planning. I could stop there and let that be the entirety post #2 in this series.  Planning is the single most important element in building a cluster and the Laptop Demo Cluster is no exception.  One of the more awkward parts of actually creating a cluster is coordinating information between Windows Clustering and SQL Clustering.  The dialog boxes show up hours apart, but still have to have matching and consistent information. • Improper output in SSH session on OSX using FreeSSHd on Windows with cygwin bash/sh shell

  I am testing out running an SSH server on a local Windows VM. I have installed FreeSSHd and set the command shell to "c:\cygwin\bin\sh --login -i" (bash as well) with "Use new console engine" unchecked. • OSX Lion - sh: mysql command not found

  I have pretty simple issue I believe. I have successfully installed mysql etc. I do not have any problems with running "mysql" command from terminal [ bash ]. Suddenly, when my application tried to run mysql command I got error: sh: mysql: command not found.. In terminal, when I type sh and then mysql I can log in to mysql without any problems. I have added mysql to PATH in .bash_profile and I suspect this is why sh cannot see it. I have cp .bash_profile to .profile but it did not do the trick, any ideas how can I fix this issue?

• RAR Password recovery / hash extraction on Mac OS X

  I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.2 and have been handed a couple of old files that need to be extracted. Old backups or finances or bills I believe. They are RAR files, and password protected. Is there a way to extract the hash from these files so I can feed it into John The Ripper or Cain and Abel? Edit I have downloaded cRARk, but unfortunately nothing I have (SimplyRAR, RAR Expander, The Unarchiver) will extract it without a password. Can someone verify that I'm crazy and there is no password on the Mac version?

• Will increasing RAM improve Lightroom 3 large tiff loading times

  Set up: mid 2009 17" unibody MacBook Pro 4GB RAM 2.66 Core 2 Duo Snow Leopard 10.6.6 Lightroom 3 When working with 12 MegaPixel RAW files from a Nikon D700, no problem. Lightroom is fine. Recently I've been scanning film and they result in large tiff files, about 130mb each. The tiff files themselves are good, and I'm happy with my scanning workflow. Working with these files in Lightroom is perfectly fine, except for one step. When I choose one of these photos in the Develop module, Lightroom displays the "Loading" on the image for about a minute or two, which is quite long. Once the image is loaded, then everything is fine again, and applying effects is instant. So my only issue is reducing that "loading" time in the develop module (the library module is fine too). Will increasing my RAM to 8GB help? I'm worried about spending the money and it not making any difference. thanks andy

• Strange error when Bootcamp attempts to create partition for Windows

  I get a strange error when I tell Bootcamp to create a partition for Windows. I get to the Create a Partition stage. I select 20GB for Windows leaving 91GB (39GB free) for OS X. I then click Partition and it gives me the following error The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again. My disk is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), I have closed all applications (besides Bootcamp Assistant) and I have even restarted and tried again to see if that might help. Nothing. I can't get it to partition. I also tried to create the partition using Disk Utility and I got the following error Partition failed Partition failed with the error: Could not modify partition map because filesystem verification failed Any ideas? BTW - I am running OS X 10.6.2

• Disable drop shadows around windows or the menu bar on OS X

  Nocturne has an option for disabling shadows around windows. But it's only available in night mode, and changing the mode (like when opening the application) causes an annoying screen flash animation. There's no way to disable the shadow under the menu bar either. MacThemes Forum / Removing the menubar dropshadow has a link to a .psd for making special desktop backgrounds that cancel out the shadow under the menu bar. But it only works if that area of the desktop picture has a low enough brightness. Some applications that cover the desktop (like DeskShade) also cover the menu bar's shadow. That's not a real solution though. Unsanity's ShadowKiller stopped working in either 10.5 or 10.6. (It does still work on 10.7.2, but the website says "NOT compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Leopard", and I couldn't get it to work on a 10.6 installation.) • Moving files fails due to privileges but they seem to be OK

  I am trying to copy old files from an OS X 10.5.8 to a new external HD. When trying to copy a folder I get the message: The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items. I've checked the privileges and they seem ok (read & write for me). What is curious is that the folder is created empty on the target drive and I can then copy the contents from inside the original folder to inside the new folder without changing anything else. This happens with several folders but not all and is making backup a pain. I have to figure out which folder broke the copy, copy its contents to the external disk and then select what hasn't been copied to copy (and eventually stop at some point and repeating the experience)

  I'm using the following httpd-vhosts.conf file to host several sites on my MacBook. • Lion refuses to be installed to any partitions on Mac

  I was attempting to install Lion on my MacBook 7-1, on which I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a separate partition. Currently, my partitions look like this: |-----Mac-----|-Grub-|----Ubuntu----|-Ubuntu Swap-|. However, Disk Utility (and I assume the rest of Mac OS X) sees it as |-----Mac-----|-----Unknown-----|. Note that I am using rEfit as my default bootloader. When attempting to install Lion, I am greeted by this screen: By the way, it appears that only the Grub partition is recognized, as I remember setting it to about 10 MB. Can anyone help with this?

• custom route not working on windows

  My windows laptop is directly connected to 192.168.1.0/24 (wireless lan). I access 10.21.0.0/16 though a router that is connected to both networks. The routing works fine with this configuration. I have a VPN, that connects to 10.0.0.0/8. The VPN network doesn't actually use any IPs in the 10.21.0.0/16 range. So I should be able to configure my routing table to route all the 10.21.0.0/16 IPs through the wireless lan, and all other 10.0.0.0/8 through the VPN. My understanding is that I can do this if the metric for the 10.21.0.0 is lower than that of the 10.0.0.0. The VPN (10.0.0.0) is automatically assigned metric 20. I have manually assigned the WLAN a metric of 1. I manually add an entry to the routing table with this command: route add 10.21.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 192.168.1.201 metric 1 The route is then assigned a metric of 2 (which is expected). The problem is that it doesn't work. I can't ping any machine on the 10.21.0.0 network. But I can access other stuff on the 10.0.0.0. I can also access stuff on the 192.168.1.0. To debug this i've done the following. Run tcpdump on the router (192.168.1.201). I can verify that no packets for 10.21.0.0 arrive on that interface. Disable iptables on the router. Disable the windows firewall. Run wireshark on my laptop, to try and see which interface the ping requests go to. But I can't see them go anywhere!! The ping command doesn't receive any 'destination unreachable' messages. Here is the relevant section of the routing table. • OSX 10.6 Give Apache2 read&write access to mounted windows share

  On Mac OS X Snow Leopard I'm trying to give the apache2 user _www full rights to a mounted hidden windows server share. I've used Connect to Server with smb://servername/share$ and saved the username/password in the keychain. The domain username used for the mount got full rights to the share on the windows server. It all works this far. I can browse and edit the files in the share from the Mac. However I can't find a way to give the apache2 user _www rights to write to the mounted share. I have a perl script that is supposed to create a file in the mounted folder but only get permission denied. I've tried all kinds of chmod and chown but it doesn't change the permissions of the share. Does anyone know how this can be done please?

  Hello. I have a very simple task to accomplish: to start tomcat application server on latest MacOS as a daemon. I have performed following steps: Installed Tomcat in /Library/Tomcat/Home Validated that it runs fine by executed /Library/Tomcat/Home/bin/startup.sh Added org.apache.tomcat.plist file to /Library/LaunchDaemons as found on internet (http://blog.i18n.ro/complete-guide-for-installing-hudson-ci-on-os-x-10-6/) Instructed MacOS to load a daemon description via sudo launchctl load org.apache.tomcat.plist. It succeeded (issuing this command second time outputs "already loaded"). Instructed MacOS to start a daeon via sudo launchctl start org.apache.tomcat.plist At this point MacOS shows an error "launchctl start error: No such process". I have checked the logfile for launchd - it have no record for this error. Google says nothing. And from error text i can't figure out what is the "process" and why it is "wrong" :(. Any hints what i'm doing wrong?

• What Is the Keyboard Shortcut for Moving to Last Message in Mac OS X Mail.app?

  I'm on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard). In Mail, I have the first message in my Inbox selected and I'm trying to navigate to the last message using my keyboard. In Thunderbird, I just hit the End key, which for me is "Function-right arrow" because I'm on a MacBook Pro. In Mail, with the first message selected, if I hit "Function-right arrow" (i.e. End), the scroll bar moves down, allowing me to see the messages at the bottom of the list, but the first message at the top of the list is still selected. What I want is for the last message to be selected. I've tried lots of key combinations and searched for the answer but haven't been able to find it. Please help. I posted this originally at discussions.apple.com but the only advice I received was to file a bug with Apple, which I did.
