• HTTP events? Is there a standard / precedent for this?

  Our architecture is HTTP servers (custom written) which whereby custom clients send a HTTP request for some information and information is returned just as HTTP works. But we need a special custom 'extension' which is a request which is a subscription for receiving asynchronous 'events' on a resource. For example the client sends an http request subscribing for events on some entity. As the 'entity' generates events they are passed to the http server and the http server must then lookup subscriptions for that entity and send the event message to all subscribed clients. Hope that makes sense. So my questions are: Has this been done before / or is there a standard I should be looking at? If no standard, any suggestions on how to implement? How does a http server send an unsolicited 'message' to a client?

• What''s easy extensible technique to store game data?

  I'm looking for library/technique for storing my game resources - levels, object (effects,world info), items(price,effects,...), NPC(visual info, behavior), everything except graphics/audio stuff. I've seen lua used for Awesome WM configuration. protobuf looks good, but it seems to be designed for network communication. I've tried to write my own parser, but as the project grows it's more and more harder to manage it and catch all the bugs. My requiremets: stability easy extension of data without need to convert older versions to newer good(don't have to be the best) performance of loading not much coding not XML!

• HTTP(S) based file server

  I've got a server running Ubuntu 10.04. I've already gotten openssh for ssh and sftp on it. I've been looking for a web-based (http, or preferably https) file server, perhaps a web-front-end to an (S)FTP server, that allows access to a specific folder, and also allows uploads. It requires user authentication, preferably using PAM. This web-based solution is for users that are not allowed to use FTP software / browser extension and don't have flash / java browser plugins within their corporate environments. So far I have looked into: Webmin: Includes a file manager, however it uses Java, and I'm looking for a plugin-free implementation. Apache2: I was able to set up https and PAM authentication, but the barebone implementation doesn't include file upload (as far as I'm aware of). HFS: Haven't tried it out because it is for Windows/wine only, and I don't want to run it under wine.

• Static pages for large photo album

  I'm looking for advice on software for managing a largish photo album for a website. 2000+ pictures, one-time drop (probably). I normally use MarginalHack's album, which does what I want: pre-generate thumbnails and HTML for the pictures, so I can serve without needing a dynamic run-time, so there's less attack surface to worry about. However, it doesn't handle pagination or the like, so it's unwieldy for this case. This is a one-time drop for pictures from a wedding, with a shared usercode/password for distribution to the guests; I don't wish to put the pictures in a third-party hosting environment. I don't wish to use PHP, simply because that's another run-time to worry about, I might relent and use something dynamic if it's Python or Perl based (as I can maintain things written in those). I currently have: Apache serving static files, Album-generated, some sub-directories to divide up the content to be a little more manageable. Something like Album but with pagination already handled would be great, but I'm willing to have something a little more dynamic, if it lets people comment or caption and store the extra data in something like an sqlite DB. I'd want something light-weight, not a full-blown CMS with security updates every three months. I don't want to upload pictures of other peoples' children into a third-party free service where I don't know what the revenue model is. (For my site: revenue is none, costs out of pocket). Existing server hosting is *nix, Apache, some WSGI. Client-side I have MacOS. Any advice?

• What relational database system should I learn? [closed]

  At the moment i know sqlite (my favorite), mysql (its ok, i get annoyed) and i do not want to learn ms/t sql (it only allows one nullable row if the column is unique). I am thinking about learning a new database system. My requirements for it is Must allow multiple connections at once (read and write) All or data i choose must be ACID compliant Performance should be good. I have a 17gb table in one project. It should perform well on read and transactional writes. With mysql it took hours to restore it and there were no foreign keys on that specific table. It only finished in a workday because i found a suggestion to adjust a setting which i think was key-buffer. And it still took hours Unique columns that allow more then one row to be null. I shouldn't have to say it but dammit MS. Allows one to make ongoing backups. Something like 'binary logs'. Some relatively small amounts of data i can grab and apply it to my local db to have it in sync with the one on the server. Table joins. I rather not write a bunch of queries to simulate a join What I would like but is not required Foreign keys. This may be a requirement later Open sourced Fair tool support. So i can measure queries, easily backup/restore, etc .NET and C (or C++) interface. (I seen one that uses raw tcp with JSON which was okish) Good subquery support. Once i was working with an older version of mysql (i believe <5.1 but it could have been 5.1) and i had to write many queries to do one query because it couldn't do subqueries. Or maybe it couldnt do it efficiently and died bc of memory limitations with a huge dataset. What db system should i learn?

• Unable to Install Guard

  I've seen Guard and it's usefulness in web development and would like to install it. Naturally, I expected to be able to use sudo gem install guard to do so (yes, it is a Ruby Gem). However the installation errors out. Here is what I'm getting: Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing guard: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. /usr/bin/ruby1.9.1 extconf.rb /usr/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require': cannot load such file -- mkmf (LoadError) from /usr/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require' from extconf.rb:4:in `<main>' Gem files will remain installed in /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/ffi-1.9.3 for inspection. • Missing feature in Hyper-V from Virtual PC

  One thing I really miss is the ability to create shared folder between host and guest.  Virtual PC does this well, you can create Shared Folder to be used every time, or just this one.  I have read some posts on how to do this.  Some people suggest using ISO Creator to package up the files and mount the image to DVD drive, but what I need is truly a "shared" environment, so I'm currently looking into creating Virtual switch and creating an internal network between the host and guest.  Let's see how that works out. I would have loved to give Virtual SAN Manager a try, but I don't have a local Fibre Channel to set one up.   I was trying to install a new WSS v3 Sharepoint on a 64 bit Windows 2003 server today but the installation was giving some error saying i would need to allow ASP.NET 2.0 in the web server extension in IIS.  Looking at the IIS there was a ASP.NET 2.0 32 bit allowed but not for a 64 bit. I tried registering the aspnet_regiis but no luck by doing so: For the 32 bit verison %SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i For the 64bit version %SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i I get the error "The error indicates that IIS is in 32 bit mode, while this application is a 64 b it application and thus not compatible." The difference is the \Framework64 folders So my next guess was to find a way to disable the 32 bit and then allow the 64 bit version. And luckily enough i found this link    MS to the rescue So just ran : cscript %SYSTEMDRIVE%\inetpub\adminscripts\adsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 0 and the registered the %SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i and that was it

• Compress a directory in linux

  I'm trying to compress a directory and ftp it to a windows ftp. I have tried ever tar command i can find to compress a directory. It appears to be ok then I try and view it's contents using winrar. Winrar keeps telling me the file is corrupt. I have viewed other .gz or .bz2 files using winrar but for some odd reason I can't get it to work. Does anyone else have a suggestion as to something else to try. I would prefer just to have it zip the files so they have a .zip extension but even then when i try to browse it's contents both windows and winrar claim it's corrupt.

I was wondering, is it possible to block a referrer by domain extension, instead of just by full site, etc.?   I'm trying to use (un)packHalf2x16, without success so far. I'm drawing with: glVertexAttribIPointer(0, 2, GL_UNSIGNED_INT, 0, 0); glEnableVertexAttribArray(0); glBindBuffer(GL_ARRAY_BUFFER, vbo); glDrawArrays(GL_POINTS, 0, n_points); glDisableVertexAttribArray(0); and on the shader #version 330 core #extension GL_ARB_shading_language_packing : require in uvec2 A0; // (...) vec4 t = vec4(unpackHalf2x16(A0.x), unpackHalf2x16(A0.y)); But nothing gets drawn. I'm pretty sure buffer's content is right, and if I use vec4 t = vec4(0); I can see it's working properly. How is this packing / unpacking thing supposed to work? I can't find any example.

But I want to use folders and subfolders for the bookmarks. With more than 20 entries the nautilus bookmarks and the places menue become inconvenient. any editor for this? any configuration file that does the job? any other tool than the standard places menue? any extension for nautilus to extend the bookmark organization? thx for reading, p.

• For some reason I can't get ATI FGLRX Drivers to support 3D acceleration on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have an ATI 5650m and I've had 0 issues with 3D Acceleration in the past. I had to reinstall Ubuntu entirely, and now with the 12.6 drivers I get - One or more tools required for installation cannot be found on the system I can't seem to solve this issue. I installed the FGLRX drivers through the "alternate command line" guide on the Ubuntu Wiki including the instructions for getting 3D support. They seem to install but I get an error with vainfo libva: VA-API version 0.32.0 Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0". libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0 libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/fglrx_drv_video.so libva error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/fglrx_drv_video.so init failed libva: va_openDriver() returns -1 vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit I have tried help here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2014440 It's a bit frustrating as I can do basically nothing without 3D support. I can't use super + direction or super + w or even configure the Unity bar to be 32px. If anyone could help I'd appreciate that.

• Hobbyist transitioning to earn money on paid work?

  I got into hobbyist Python programming some years ago on a whim, having never programmed before other than BASIC way back when, and little by little have cobbled together a, in my opinion, nice little desktop application that I might try to get out there in some fashion someday. It's roughly 15,000 logical lines of code, and includes use of Python, wxPython, SQLite, and a number of other libraries, works on Win and Linux (maybe Mac, untested) and I've gotten some good feedback about the application's virtues from non-programmer friends. I've also done a small application for data collection for animal behavior experiments, and an ad hoc tool to help generate a web page...and I've authored some tutorials. I consider my Python skills to be appreciably limited, my SQL skills to be very limited, but I'm not totally out to sea, either (e.g. I did FizzBuzz in a few minutes, did a "Monty Hall Dilemma" simulator in some minutes, etc.). I also put a strong premium on quality user experience; that is, the look and feel matters much to me and the software looks quite good, I feel. I know no other programming languages yet. I also know the basics of HTML/CSS (not considering them programming languages) and have created an artist's web page (that was described by a friend as "incredibly slick"...it's really not, though), and have a scientific background. I'm curious: Aside from directly selling my software, what's roughly possible--if anything--in terms of earning either side money on gigs, or actually getting hired at some level in the software industry, for someone with this general skill set?

• Sometimes new windows don't come to the front when launched

  I'm using gnome shell with new ubuntu for few days now and have experienced really annoying behaviour with new windows. Sometimes when I use another window and press e.g. Alt Ctrl T to open new terminal window, I don't get this window being brought to front. Instead I get notification at the bottom that "New terminal window is ready to use". The same is with Pidgin being integrated with gnome shell (via extension). Every time I get new message, window pops up but doesn't show. I need to either Alt Tab it or click the notification. Is there any way to have new windows being always brought to front, and remove those annoying "Window is ready" notifications? • TFS Backup Plan Wizard Tool

  With the release of the “September – 2010” TFS 2010 Power Tools, came an addition to the Team Foundation Server Administration Console.  This addition is the Team Foundation Backups Tree item.  The tool is used to create backup plans and to work with it you run through a wizard, just like you would in configuring TFS or any of the extensions it has. The areas covered through the tool include: Backup to a Network Backup Path, retention configuration. Under Advanced Options, the extension to be used for the Full and Transactional backups. The capability to include external databases, meaning, include the reporting databases and SharePoint databases as part of the plan. There are further options as you can see, that includes being able to define a task scheduler account, be able to set alerts for notifications on execution of the plans, and last the option to configure the schedule for the plan execution.  All in all a very good tool and great way to safeguard the investment you’ve made.

• Is avoiding the private access specifier in PHP justified?

  I come from a Java background and I have been working with PHP for almost a year now. I have worked with WordPress, Zend and currently I'm using CakePHP. I was going through Cake's lib and I couldn't help notice that Cake goes a long way avoiding the "private" access specifier. Cake says Try to avoid private methods or variables, though, in favor of protected ones. The latter can be accessed or modified by subclasses, whereas private ones prevent extension or re-use. in this tutorial. Why does Cake overly shun the "private" access specifier while good OO design encourages its use i.e to apply the most restrictive visibility for a class member that is not intended to be part of its exported API? I'm willing to believe that "private" functions are difficult test, but is rest of the convention justified outside Cake? or perhaps it's just a Cake convention of OO design geared towards extensibility at the expense of being a stickler for stringent (or traditional?) OO design?

  What I am trying to do. I want to be able to import heading, short description and an image into my website, just using a link. I am using Joomla but can switch to any CMS, or try to build an extension myself. The problem is I dont know where to look for example code, or what to look for. To me it doesnt seem like too difficult a process. Also, the code must be out there, with a little tweaking I can probably use someone elses, but I dont even know what to search for.

  For example, is it possible for Rapportive (which works on Gmail for web), to work on Gmail for Android. I understand that the UI would be vastly different, but the question remains, is it possible at all to overlay content or change behavior of the Gmail app for android. I have done some research but cannot find the right resources that would tell me if this is possible or not on Android devices. This is a trivial question for Gmail for Web, ie. making a Chrome extension has lots of resources, and services like Rapportive manipulate Gmail apparent ease.

• Minerva in wine

  First of all, I've tried to install adobe air on ubuntu 13.10 64-bit without any success (yes, I've read the posts here, but none of them have helped (it's always some dependency that says "but it wont be installed"). Then I decided to try running it thru wine. Installed adobe air with no problems. Now the tricky part - how do I run it ? Adobe Air has only exes' to update itself, and the minerva has and .air extension. Ive tried even something like rundll32 Adobe Air.dll (with no success of course).

• Remote Access to Owncloud Server

  I'm currently trying to setup my own own-cloud server, and I've got it fully installed, configured, and accessible from within my own local network. I cannot figure out how to access it from the outside. So far I've: Successfully setup port-forwarding on my local router. I've done so via 'single port forwarding' and 'port range forwarding' Ports 80, 443, 3306 (Apache-Full and MySQL) Successfully obtained my external IP address. I've also tested this magic number from within the network at #insertIPhere/owncloud and it did work. Successfully setup the server using SQLite Successfully setup the server using MySQL Created the following exceptions in my firewall: Allow In Port 80 (Apache Full) Allow In Port 443 (Apache Full) Allow In Port 3306 (MySQL) Tried connecting from several different remote networks, as to troubleshoot something on their end As far as trying to access it, I'm doing so through Google-Chrome and Mozilla Firefox trying to reach the server through #insertIPhere/owncloud using the above public IP address. So what have I missed, and how do I access my server from outside? Thanks in advance for your help and time, and I apologize in advance for what will probably result in my noobish mistake in networking. I've looked at the official documentation. Now i want to save the multiple attachments data i.e., Contents of file, Extension, Size and name of file , How can i do it. I am getting the size of file now by the following code in javascript: var size = this.files[0].size; I am a new in php, so any easy tutorials, and help you can specify.. Also i want all the Attachments (maximum 5) to be saved in one cell (i.e., FileContents) in database, same the extensions and sizes collective of all attachments in one cell (i.e., Extensions).
