• Configure static IPv6 on Ubuntu

  I'm trying to configure IPv6 on a dedicated Ubuntu server. My provider gave me a "/64" (whatever that is - I'm still confused) of IPv6 addresses. However, when I try to use them, I can't ping anything. • Ubuntu via Wubi refuses to show up in boot menu

  I'm in this strange situation: I have 3 partitions, one for Vista (C), one for Windows 7 (D), and one 10GB partition (E). At least that's how my original OEM Vista partition sees them. The primary OS that I boot into everyday is Windows 7. The situation is that for some reason it sees the Windows 7 partition (its own) as drive C, the 10GB one as (D) and the Vista one as (E). I've successfully used the Wubi installation before on Vista, but now it simply doesn't work. Ubuntu just does not show up in the boot menu, no matter what I try to do. I'm running out of ideas. I heard it doesn't really play well with Windows 7 either. I set it to Vista compatibility mode and that didn't work, I also tried installing it from Vista itself and that didn't work either for some reason. Any ideas what I should try? If anyone is about to suggest EasyBCD, please underline the command-line instructions I'm gonna need to follow. Thanks.

• No sound Ubuntu 10.10 (have SB Live! card)

  I am new to Linux/Ubuntu and I just installed 10.10 on my Dell Desktop PC that was running Windows XP. The PC is about 5-6 years old and the sound card it has is a SoundBlaster Live! card. The Sound Preferences recognizes the card as [SB Live! Value] EMU10k1X. It is currently set to Analog Stereo Duplex. I tried multiple other sound configurations and nothing works. No sound but some clicks come out of the speakers. I ran the system test and during the audio tests the same thing happened, just clicks and pops. I tried to play some music with Rhythmbox and when it tries to play a track it tries for several seconds and then just closes itself, or sometimes just doesn't play. I ran a check for drivers, but the only driver it found to install was for my nVidia video card. It did not show any drivers for the sound card. Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to get the sound to work?

• NumLock is so weired in Ubuntu

  The NumLock and the keypad is so weired in Ubuntu. I have two computers, A is a desktop, with USB keyboard, B is a laptop, with laptop keyboard and another USB keyboard. On the desktop A, whether the NumLock is on or off, the number keys on the keypad just don't work. Also the NumLock LED is always off. Since the guide mentioned above recommends placing the backup directory in a separate partition I want to repartition the /dev/sdc1 external hard disk but retain existing data in a separate partition. E.g. split /dev/sdc1 into two partitions: (i) one to be used exclusively for the rsync-based backup and (ii) the other for the existing miscellaneous data. How should I go about partitioning with minimal risk to my existing data and what kind of filesystem do you recommend? I would prefer a console-based guide but unfortunately all the material I found on the web is oriented towards partitioning the main (bootable) disk and not an external fuseblk filesystem used only for passive data.

• Adding file to /etc/cron.d doesn't make it run (ubuntu 10.04)

  If I scp a cron file into /etc/cron.d it doesn't run unless I edit the file and change the command. Then crond seems to pick up the cron file. How can I make cron reload its cron files in ubuntu 10.04? 'touch'ing the file doesn't work nor does 'restart cron' or 'reload cron'. My cron file is set to run every minute and logs to a file. Nothing ends up in the log file until I edit the command, and there's no entry for it in /var/log/syslog I'm stumped. Here's my cron file saved to /etc/cron.d/runscript # Runs the script every minute.   I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer Aspire One netbook. The wireless connection works great, but the wired is totally dead. When I plug the Ethernet wire, the little led next to the port doesn't blink. • Ubuntu Launcher Items Don't Have Correct Environment Vars under NX

  I've got an environment variable issue I'm having trouble resolving. I'm running Ubuntu (Karmic, 9.10) and coming in via NX (NoMachine) on a Mac. I've added several environment variables in my .bashrc file, e.g.: export JAVA_HOME=$HOME/dev/tools/Linux/jdk/jdk1.6.0_16/ Sitting at the machine, this environment variable is available on the command line, as well as for apps I launch from the Main Menu. Coming in over NX, however, the environment variable shows up correctly on the command line, but NOT when I launch things via the launcher. As an example, I created a simple shell script called testpath in my home folder: #!/bin/sh echo $PATH && sleep 5 quit I gave it execute privileges: chmod +x testpath And then I created a launcher item in my Main Menu that simply runs: ./testpath When I'm sitting at the computer, this launcher runs and shows all the stuff I put into the $PATH variable in my .bashrc file (e.g. $JAVA_HOME, etc). But when I come in over NX, it shows a totally different value for the $PATH variable, despite the fact that if I launch a terminal window (still in NX), and type export $PATH, it shows up correctly. I assume this has to do with which files are getting loaded by the windowing system over NX, and that it's some other file. But I have no idea how to fix it. • Windows XP cannot read DVD burned on Ubuntu

  The story : I have burned a DVD disc on Ubuntu using Brasero. When file burning was complete, I canceled the burning of checksum to DVD. Then I put that DVD on Windows XP (SP3) and copied all the files from DVD to the hard drive (no errors when copying). When that was done I discovered that all copied files are not readable. What is more, all the files on that DVD also shown to be not readable, even though all file names, directories were in their place. What I found out? Windows detect that the disc is in CDFS (CD-ROM File System). Disc is clean as new, have no scratches. All files while opened in Notepad++ look like "NULNULNULNULNUL" in one line. The size of files is normal. Other discs that are recognized as CDFS can be read with no problems. What I tried? Starting CDFS service in Windows registry. Result - a new device in Windows Device Manager (JUBS JGH2ZCT SCSI CdRom Device). Removing my CD/DVD device from Device Manager. Result - Windows restarted the system and reinstalled the driver. So... how to read the DVD, when I have no access to any other PC, any other OS?

• CSS cross browser compatibility on Ubuntu

  Hello, I'm currently working in web development and my default desktop is Ubuntu and I'm kind of happy with the setup and applications I got going. But I need to test web pages for cross browser compatibility while still being on Ubuntu. I have gone through hell trying to get IE7 or IE8 (with wine) to run on ubuntu and when they finally worked they were very buggy and the graphics/scrolling was insanely slow. Of course there is the option of virtual box but again, too much GBytes just to run a small application! So to all the CSS gurus out there, how can I continue with my beloved Ubuntu and still deliver a good quality (tested) page. Thank you.

• Can't mount hard drive. Ubuntu 12.04

  I am trying to recover some pictures on my 320 GB Hard Disk, so I put in a Live Ubuntu CD and am in that right now. In the devices list, it shows my USB drive, but not my 320 GB Hard Disk. I can see the disk in Disk Utility (it says it's on /dev/sda), but it's not mounted, and it says it has a few bad sectors but it is OK. In Disk Usage Analyzer, it says my maximum capacity is 13.4 GB, so it's definitely not using the 320 GB Hard Disk. I tried the following: sudo mkdir /media/newhd (worked) sudo mount /dev/sda /media/newhd (didn't work. it says I must specify the filesystem type) I then tried: fsck.ext4 -f /dev/sda (didn't work. Said: Superblock invalid, trying to backup blocks. then: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda. The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock) Does anyone have any ideas? The whole problem started when my Windows Vista said "Can't find operating system". Any ideas on how I can get on to my hard drive at /dev/sda?

• How do I enable Ubuntu Gnome system tools

  I am running Ubuntu 10 with Gnome 2.30.2. This is a VMWare workstation image provided by another company that I do not have support in this regard. I am trying to access the graphical tools for configuring the network, users, and services but the System-Administration menu does not have these options listed. The main issue I am trying to solve is to correct the problems with the gnome menu options and network settings I have the gnome-system-tools package installed, and I am unable to run command-line versions of the tools, such as nm-applet (I get no GUI if I run that command, the process is running in the background). I realize that I can perform many tasks command-line, but I would like to use the GUI for administrative functions as I am not overly proficient for all command for restarting services and setting a static IP with a specific gateway. Further, I can run gnome-nettool, but I cannot change the IP, I can only see my network card. nm-connection-editor does not show any network cards that I can configure to change the IP. Currently, I am getting a DHCP through my NAT in VMWare, I want to set it to a specific IP address though. • ubuntu suspend works, but then immediately starts

  Having a strange problem after upgrading from Ubuntu 11.04 to 12.04. Previously I could suspend just fine, the computer will switch itself off. Pressing the ON button will switch it on and it will resume. After upgrading to 12.04 however, when I suspend it does (almost) the same, turns itself off, but about 2 seconds later, the computer turns itself on again, and it goes back to life from suspend. I haven't changed any of the hardware or BIOS and it was working before just fine. Also tried every possible switch of pm-suspend ; setting acpi_sleep=nonvs in /etc/default/grub and also this suggestion but nothing seems to make a difference... UPDATE: just tested suspend using the 12.04 liveCD and it was working perfectly fine... but when I boot normally it doesn't. ANOTHER UPDATE: After re-installing I noticed that I can suspend. However, after restoring my home folder - the strange suspend problem happens again. I then created a new user account. When I login to the other account I can suspend without a problem... So This seems specific to my account only. How/What can cause this in my own user settings?

  Where does Ubuntu store profiles that allow it to remember the credentials to private wireless networks that it has previously authenticate to and used? I just replaced my Uncle's hard drive with a new one and installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it (he had Ubuntu 9.10 on his old hard drive. He is at my house right now, and I want him to be able to access his private wireless network when he gets home. Usually, when I upgrade Ubuntu, I have his /home directory on another partition, so his wireless profile to his own network persists. However, right now, I'm trying to figure out which .folder I need to copy from his /home/user folder on the old hard drive, to the new hard drive, so that he will be able to have wireless Internet when he gets home. Does anyone know with certainty, exactly which folder I need to copy to the new hard drive to achieve this?

• Can not connect remotely to MySQL Server on Ubuntu 10.10

  Ok I have searched google for two days trying to get this to work. Here are the steps I have taken so far: Clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 Install mysql 5.1 as well as admin Comment out the bind address in the config file Create a new database Create a new user that is username@% to allow remote connections Grant all access to this user to the new database EXCEPT the grant option Login on the server is ok using this new user and database on the localhost Login on the server is ok using this new user and database on the server internal network ip Login from a remote computer is ok using this new user and database using the internal network ip Login is not working when logging in with this username and database using the external ip address from the server or the remote computer. I have port forwarding enabled for this port and it is viewable from outside as confirmed by canyouseeme.org I have nmap'd using the following command on the internal ip and get the below result: nmap -PN -p 3306 192.168.1.73 Starting Nmap 5.21 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-02-19 13:41 PST Nmap scan report for computername-System-Name (192.168.1.73) Host is up (0.00064s latency).   I own a Thinkpad T420s with 8GB RAM, 160 GB SSD and a quite fast i7 processor. Summa summarum a very fast computer that works perfectly. Now, I am not very impressed by the performance of my Ubuntu 12.04 virtual machine running on VirtualBox 4.1.18. I assume that Virtual Machines are always a bit slower than the guest system, still I think it should be more performant given the hardware settings I give it: 4096 MB RAM 1 CPU without CPU limitation (I would like to give it more but then it does not seem to work - I am not experienced in this maybe somebody could give me advice on this too) Activated PAE/NX, VT-x/AMD-V and Nested Paging 96 MB Graphics Memory (no 2D or 3D acceleration) ~ 14 GB disk space, currently about 7 GB are used Maybe I misconfigured something, could you give me a hint please? Thanks! Edit: What I mean by slow is that for example switching tabs in the browser (whether FF or Chrome) only goes with a 0.5s delay or something, as well as switching application windows and/or double-clicking applications in the dock to get all open windows.. opening Aptana takes about a minute whereas opening something like Photoshop on the guest system takes 5 seconds

  I want to run windows 8 as a guest os with virtualbox on some thinkpad (haven't bought one yet) running Ubuntu 12.04. Apart from virtualizing windows 8 (mostly just for use with the office suite app) my needs are very modest, I don't need much more than emacs and a browser. What I'd like to know is what kind of specs will be necessary to run windows 8 well as a vm, using the office apps. It would be a shame to waste money on overpowered hardware. Are there any official guidelines from oracle or windows on this? Would this lenovo x220, for example, be sufficiently strong? The specs below were taken from this review.   I am using a Dell xps l702x and I am using ubuntu 10.04 because I need to use f77 (don't ask) and I wasn't able to get it working on later versions of ubuntu. I cannot use the wifi at all. I have tried to fix it and have had limited success (changed the output from rfkill list all from Hard blocked: yes, to hard blocked: no).
