  The following Scala code does just what I expect it to - it prints each line of some_file.txt. import scala.io.Source val lines = Source.fromPath("some_file.txt").mkString for (line <- lines) print(line) If I use println instead of print, I expect to see some_file.txt printed out with double-spacing. Instead, the program prints a newline after every character of some_file.txt. Could someone explain this to me? I'm using Scala 2.8.0 Beta 1.

Am I being neurotic in trying to find a way to optimize this? I may be working on a function and put in a half-dozen or so of those lines, figure out why it's not working, and then cut them out again. Have you developed an efficient way of doing that? • Can I encrypt web.config with a custom protection provider who's assembly is not in the GAC?

  I have written a custom protected configuration provider for my web.config. When I try to encrypt my web.config with it I get the following error from aspnet_iisreg aspnet_regiis.exe -pef appSettings . -prov CustomProvider (This is running in my MSBuild) Could not load file or assembly 'MyCustomProviderNamespace' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. After checking with the Fusion log, I confirm it is checking both the GAC, and 'C:/WINNT/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v2.0.50727/' (the location of aspnet_iisreg). But it cannot find the provider. I do not want to move my component into the GAC, I want to leave the custom assembly in my ApplicationBase to copy around to various servers without having to pull/push from the GAC. Here is my provider configuration in the web.config. <configProtectedData> <providers> <add name="CustomProvider" type="MyCustomProviderNamespace.MyCustomProviderClass, MyCustomProviderNamespace" /> </providers> </configProtectedData> I want aspnet_iisreg to check my ApplicationBase Bin folder for this assembly. • Would OpenID or OAuth work for authorization/authentication on a distributed web service?

  We're in the early stages of designing a RESTful/resource-oriented web service API for a computational lingustics application. Because many of the resources we plan to serve are rights-encumbered, a key design decision has been to specify the platform so that each resource provider can expose their own web service that complies with the API spec. This way, the rights owner maintains control over their content (and thus the ability to throttle or deny access at will) and a direct relationship with the consumer, while still being able to participate in in the collaborative network. At the same time, to simplify the job of writing a client for this service, we want to allow a client access to the distributed service through one end-point, with the server handling content negotiation and retrieval from the appropriate providers. Right now, we're at an impasse on authentication/authorization schemes. One of our number has argued for the (technical) simplicity of a central authentication registry, but others are concerned about the organizational complexity of such a scheme. It seems to me, based on an albeit limited understanding of the technologies, that a combination of OpenID and OAuth would do the trick, with a client authenticating with the end-point via OpenID, and the server taking action on the user's behalf with the various content providers using OAuth. I've only ever seen implementations (e.g. stackoverflow, twitter, etc.) where a human was present to intervene, and I still need to do more research on these technologies. Would a scheme like this work for an automated web service, or would it make the client too difficult to implement and operate?

  I'd like to print PDF file(s) on windows' network printer via GhostScript. (I dont want to use Adobe Reader) I've read gswin32c.exe which can do the job. I experimented with many commands and coudn't find the way how to force gs to print PDF on my (windows default) network drive. I don't need point exact network printer- default can be used. But if there is no such option I'm happy to pass printer name as well. (I've tried with param -SDevice="\server_IP\printer_name" but this didnt work as well...) • How does a java web project architecture look like without EJB3 ?

  A friend and I are building a fairly complex website based on java. (PHP would have been more obvious but we chose for java because the educational aspect of this project is important to us) We have already decided to use JSF (with richfaces) for the front end and JPA for the backend and so far we have decided not to use EJB3 for the business layer. The reason we've decided not to use EJB3 is because - and please correct me if I am wrong - if we use EJB3 we can only run it on a full blown java application server like jboss and if we don't use EJB3 we can still run it on a lightweight server like tomcat. We want to keep speed and cost of our future web server in mind. So far i've worked on two JEE projects and both used the full stack with web business logic factories/persistence service entities with every layer a seperate module. Now here is my question, if you dont use EJB3 in the business logic layer. What does the layer look like? Please tell what is common practice when developing java web projects without ejb3? Do you think business logic layer can be thrown out altogether and have business logic in the backing beans? If you keep the layer, do you have all business methods static? Or do you initialize each business class as needed in the backing beans in every session as needed?

  I am trying to find a regular expression within a line of a .csv file, so I can eventually save all the matches to another file, and lose all the other junk. So a line in my file might look like: MachineName,User,IP,VariableData,Location The VariableData is what I want to match, and if there's a match, print the line. I am using a pattern for this because I only want 3 out of 10 of variations of VariableData, and out of those 3, they are numbered differently(example, "pc104, pccrt102, pccart65"). I am trying to do this using the Scanner Class and keeping it simple as possible so I can understand it. I've played around with the Matcher class a little bit, but only found a way to match the expression but not get the whole line. My other throught was maybe somehow count the line that contains the pattern, then go back and print the line that corresponds to the counts.

  Hello, I'm designing a web application, which will support both standard UIs (accessed via browsers) and a RESTful API (an XML/JSON-based web service). User agents will be able to differentiate between these by using different values in the Accept HTTP header. The RESTful API will use the following URI structure (example for an "article" resource): GET /article/ - gets a list of articles POST /article/ - adds a new article PUT /article/{id} - updates an existing article based on {id} DELETE /article/{id} - deletes an existing article based on {id} The UI part of the application will however need to support multiple views, for example: a standard resource view a view for submitting a new resource a view for editing an existing resource a view for deleting an existing resource (i.e. display delete confirmation) Note that the latter three views are still accessed via GET, even though they are processed via overloaded POST. Possible solution: Introduce additional parameters (keywords) into URIs which would identify individual views - i.e. on top of the above, the application would support the following URIs (but only for Content-Type: text/html): GET /article/add - displays a form for adding a new article (fetched via GET, processed via POST) GET /article/123 - displays article 123 in "view" mode (fetched via GET) GET /article/123/edit - displays article 123 in "edit" mode (fetched via GET, processed via PUT overloaded as POST) GET /article/123/delete - displays "delete" confirmation for article 123 (fetched via GET, processed via DELETE overloaded as POST) A better implementation of the above might be to put the add/edit/delete keywords into a GET parameter - since they do not change the resource we're working with, it might be better to keep the base URI same for all of them. My question is: How would you map the above URI structure to UIs served to the regular user, considering that there can be several views per each resource, please? Do you agree with the possible solution detailed above, or would you recommend a different approach based on your experience? NB: we've already implemented an application which consists of a standalone RESTful API and a standalone web application. • How do I use a custom authentication mechanism for a Java web application with Spring Security?

  Hi, I'm working on a project to convert an existing Java web application to use Spring Web MVC. As a part of this I will migrate the existing log-on/log-off mechanism to use Spring Security. The idea at this stage is to replicate the existing functionality and replace only the web layer, leaving the service classes and objects in place. The required functionality is simple. Access is controlled to URLs and to access certain pages the user must log on. Authentication is performed with a simple username and password along with an extra static piece of information that comes from the login page. There is no notion of a role: once a user has logged on they have access to all of the pages. Behind the scenes, the service layer has a class with a simple authentication method: doAuthenticate(String username, String password, String info) throws ServiceException An exception is thrown if the login fails. I'd like to leave this existing service object that does the authentication intact but to "plug it into" the Spring Security mechanism. Can somebody suggest the best approach to take for this please? Naturally, I'd like to take the path of least resistance and leave the work where possible to Spring... Thanks in advance, Adam.

• ASP.NET SQLMembership Provider not logging in

  My web app uses the sql memebership provider. Running it locally all is well, deploying to a dev server it works fine too in firefox, but in IE8 something unexpected is happening. Once a user logs in they're supposed to be redirected to home.aspx. What's happening when I attempt to login is it appears to accept the login credentials but then doesn't redirect to home.aspx. Instead it just redirects me to the login page as though I had attempted to access home.aspx directly without being logged in. The url parameter ReturnUrl is appended, Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fhome.aspx Why is this only happening with IE8? My local PC is IIS7 but the server is IIS6.   How do I pretty print time duration in perl? The only thing I could come up with so far is my $interval = 1351521657387 - 1351515910623; # milliseconds my $duration = DateTime::Duration->new( seconds => POSIX::floor($interval/1000) , nanoseconds => 1000000 * ($interval % 1000), ); my $df = DateTime::Format::Duration->new( pattern => '%Y years, %m months, %e days, ' . '%H hours, %M minutes, %S seconds, %N nanoseconds', normalize => 1, ); print $df->format_duration($duration); which results in 0 years, 00 months, 0 days, 01 hours, 35 minutes, 46 seconds, 764000000 nanoseconds This is no good for me for the following reasons: I don't want to see "0 years" (space waste) &c and I don't want to remove "%Y years" from the pattern (what if I do need years next time?) I know in advance that my precision is only milliseconds, I don't want to see the 6 zeros in the nanoseconds part. I care about prettiness/compactness/human readability much more than about precision/machine readability. I.e., I want to see something like "1.2 years" or "3.22 months" or "7.88 days" or "5.7 hours" or "75.5 minutes" (or "1.26 hours, whatever looks better to you) or "24.7 seconds" or "133.7 milliseconds" &c (similar to how R prints difftime)

• How can I provide users with the functionality of the DBUnit DatabaseOperation methods from a web in

  I am currently updating a java-based web application which allows database developers to create stored procedure regression test suites for database testing. Currently, for test setup, execution and clean-up stages, the user is provided with text boxes where they are able to enter SQL code which is executed by the isql command. I would like to extend the application to use DB Unit’s DatabaseOperation methods to provide more ways to setup the state of the database than just SQL statements. The main reason for using Db Unit rather than just SQL statements is to be able to create and store xml and xls DataSets on a server where they can be associated with their test cases and used for data setup. My question is: How can I provide users with the functionality of the DBUnit DatabaseOperation methods from a web interface? I have considered: Creating a simple programming language and a parser to read some simple syntax involving the DB Unit method names which accept a parameter being the file location to an xml or xls DataSet. I was thinking of allowing the user to register the files they need with the web app which would catalogue them and provide each file with an identifier which could passed as a parameter to the methods in this simple programming language. Creating an XML DTD which provides the user with the ability to specify operations and parameters. If I went this approach, how can I execute the methods and their parameters that I parse from the XML document? Creating a table in the database which stores the method and a FK relation to a catalogued DataSet file, however I don’t think this would be good solution due to the fact that data entry would be tedious.
