• Why is Gnome-Shell thinking my "d" key minimizes all windows?

  I am on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (in gnome-shell) and I am unable to use my "d" key. Regular gnome-2 works perfectly fine, but for some reason I cannot use my "d" key in gnome-3. I recently installed it and have been trying to figure this out, but I have no clue what's going on. I attempted to disable the keyboard shortcut that minimizes active windows, but that did not work. (My only option right now is to use CTRL-V to paste my "d"s.) On top of this, my arrow keys automatically move my windows and I cannot move through text using them. What's going on here, folks?

• "Never hide" Unity launcher via CCSM & gconf doesn't work

  All: I am running Unity 3D and I want to set my launcher to never hide. I first ran ccsm, and set "Hide Launcher" to "Never". I rebooted then logged back in and it was still auto-hiding. I then ran gconf-editor, I navigated to /apps/compiz-1/plugins/unityshell/screen0/options and then set launcher_hide_mode to 0. I again rebooted and logged back in. The launcher is still auto-hiding. Checking gconf-editor, launcher_hide_mode is set to 0, but this setting isn't active however. What can I do to get the launcher to Never hide? Thanks, Jim

I'm planning to redesign my website and looking for a WordPress replacement for my blog. My requirements are: simple (I won't do a large, complicated website) and lucid well coded (OOP), extensions, templates, active development (not 3 years old) nice but temperate text editor (+images, links), tags and categories, page break easy integration with Flickr, Picasa and social networks technology: PHP and MySQL, not cloud service (like Posterous or Tumblr) Could you recommend me some blogging software which would meet these criteria?

• The Future of Life Assurance Conference Recap

  I recently wrote about the Life Insurance Conference held in Washington, DC last month. This week I was both an attendee and guest speaker the 13th Annual Future of Life Assurance Conference held at The Guoman Tower in London, UK. It's amazing that these two conferences were held on opposition sides of the Atlantic Ocean and addressed many of the same session topics and themes. Insurance is certainly a global industry! This year's conference was attended by many of the leading carriers and CEOs in the UK and across Europe.The sessions included a strong lineup of keynote speakers and panel discussions from carriers such as Legal & General, Skandia, Aviva, Standard Life, Friends Provident, LV=, Zurich UK, Barclays and Scottish Life. Sessions topics addressed a variety of business and regulatory issues including: Ensuring a profitable future Key priorities in regulation The future of advice The impact of the RDR on distribution Bancassurance Gaining control of the customer relationship Revitalizing product offerings In addition, Oracle speakers (Glenn Lottering and myself) led specific sessions on gearing up for Solvency II and speeding product development through adaptive rules-based systems. The main themes that played throughout many of the sessions included: change is here, focusing on customers, the current economic crisis has been challenging and the industry needs to get back to the basics and simplify - simplify - simplify. Additionally, it is clear that the UK Life & Pension markets will be going through some major changes as new RDR regulation related to advisor fees and commission and automatic enrollment are rolled out in 2012 Roger A.Soppe, CLU, LUTCF, is the Senior Director of Insurance Strategy, Oracle Insurance.

This was a full day event with various sessions on J2EE 6, Java Concurrency, NoSQL, MongoDB, Oracle 12c, Oracle ADF etc. It was an overwhelming response from students, auditorium was jam packed with 600+ LPU energetic students of B.Tech and MCA stream. Navein Juneja Sr. Director LPU gave the keynote and introduced the speakers of AIOUG and Delhi & NCR Java User Group (DaNJUG). Mr. Juneja explained about the LPU and its students. He explained how Oracle and Java is most used and accepted technologies in world. Rohit Dhand Additional Dean LPU came on stage and share about how his career started with Oracle databases. He encouraged students to learn these technologies and build their career. Satyendra Kumar vice-president AIOUG thanked LPU and their stuff for organizing such a good technical event and students for their overwhelming response.  He talked about the India Oracle group and its events at various geographical locations all over India. Jitendra Chittoda Co-Leader DaNJUG explained how to make a new Java User Groups (JUG), what are its benefits and how to promote it. He explained how the Indian JUGs are contributing to the different initiatives like Adopt-a-JSR and Adopt-OpenJDK. After the inaugural address event started with two different tracks one for Oracle Database and another for Java and its related technologies. • How can I login to lightdm with password for fingerprint-enabled user after 12.10 upgrade?

  Sorry for the long question. I have a laptop with ubuntu quantal 12.10, a fingerprint scanner, and a few active user accounts. When the machine boots up to lightdm, I get a prompt toenter my password or scan my finger print. Every now and then, fingerprint scanning just doesn't seem to work. Before the 12.10 upgrade, I was always able to enter my password for this user when fingerprint failed. Now, no matter what, I have to scan my prints to login as this user. If I try to login as a different user (fingerprint is not enabled for any others), I can see the password is typed out -- asterisks show in the password input box as I type them -- and get in. Not so for the fingerprint user. Any clues on how to figure out what's gone wrong?

• Documenting and enforcing programming standards and guidelines for shared library

  Myself and another developer with the go ahead from our IT director have started a general purpose library in .NET with the intention that it will provide many common purpose classes that we use in our day to day development. During discussions and design of the library we have come up with a set of standards that we want the library to follow to ensure it is maintained and expanded on in a consistent manner. What is the best way to ensure these decisions we made for the library get feed to the other developers who might be using and adding to this library in the future. One of our decisions was to ensure we review all checked in code so we expect initially there to be some differences in coding styles of individuals not fitting in with the project standards. Some ideas I had were: Add a Read-me.txt to the project that outline the guidelines and standards Send an email out to everyone in the team to let them know about the project etc Call a team meeting to go through this new project and our expectations and standards we were aiming to follow Try and enforce the standards via Visual Studio (not sure if this would be possible or how just an idea) At the moment there is no general company programming standards so this would be a first really insofar as we are creating a standard that different project teams would need to adhere to.

• Is Openness at the heart of the EU Digital Agenda?

  At OpenForum Europe Summit 2010, to be held in Brussels, Autoworld, 11 Parc du Cinquantenaire on Thursday 10 June 2010, a number of global speakers will discuss whether it indeed provides an open digital market as a catalyst for economic growth and if it will deliver a truly open e-government and digital citizenship (see Summit 2010). In 2008, OpenForum Europe, a not-for-profit champion of openness through open standards, hosted one of the most cited speeches by Neelie Kroes, then Commissioner of Competition. Her forward-looking speech on openness and interoperability as a way to improve the competitiveness of ICT markets set the EU on a path to eradicate lock-in forever. On the two-year anniversary of that event, Vice President Kroes, now the first-ever Commissioner of the Digital Agenda, is set to outline her plans for delivering on that vision. Much excitement surrounds open standards, given that Kroes is a staunch believer. The EU's Digital Agenda promises IT standardization reform in Europe and vows to recognize global standards development organizations (fora/consortia) by 2010. However, she avoided the term "open standards" in her new strategy. Markets are, of course, asking why she is keeping her cards tight on this crucial issue. Following her speech, Professor Yochai Benkler, award-winning author of "The Wealth of Networks", and Professor Nigel Shadbolt, appointed by the UK Government to work alongside Sir Tim Berners-Lee to help transform public access to UK Government information join dozens of speakers in the quest to analyse, entertain and challenge European IT policy, people, and documents. Speakers at OFE Summit 2010 include David Drummond, Senior VP Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer, Google; Michael Karasick, VP Technology and Strategy, IBM; Don Deutsch, Vice President, Standards Strategy and Architecture for Oracle Corp; Thomas Vinje, Partner Clifford Chance; Jerry Fishenden, Director, Centre for Policy Research, and Rishab Ghosh, head, collaborative creativity group, UNU-MERIT, Maastricht (see speakers). • Do most companies not know how to write software?

  If you're an active reader here, try to think about how many times you've heard (and even agreed) when someone here has told someone else to start looking for a new job. Personally, I've seen it a lot more than I expected: it's almost starting to sound cliche. I get that there are bound to be a number of companies that are bad at developing software or managing a software project, but it almost seems like it's getting worse and more frequent, maybe we're just hearing from them and not all of the places that have decent work atmospheres/conditions. So I ask: In your experience, and through your developer friends do you find that it is common that companies have bad development environments and if so: Why do you think it's common? What do you think could be done to fix it as a developer, as a manager, as an industry? Do you think it's improving?

• CERN Announces the Discovery of a Higgs-Boson-like Particle

  CERN scientists dropped a press release today indicating they’ve found a particle consistent with the long sought after Higgs Boson particle–the “God” particle, that could help radically refine our understanding of Standard Model of Particle Physics. For years scientists at CERN have been harnessing the power of the Large Hadron Collider to answer fundamental questions about the nature of particles and the universe around us. In the above video John Ellis, a theoretical physicist, answers the question “What is the Higgs Boson?” The video pairs nicely with the CERN press release: “We observe in our data clear signs of a new particle, at the level of 5 sigma, in the mass region around 126 GeV. The outstanding performance of the LHC and ATLAS and the huge efforts of many people have brought us to this exciting stage,” said ATLAS experiment spokesperson Fabiola Gianotti, “but a little more time is needed to prepare these results for publication.” “The results are preliminary but the 5 sigma signal at around 125 GeV we’re seeing is dramatic. This is indeed a new particle. We know it must be a boson and it’s the heaviest boson ever found,” said CMS experiment spokesperson Joe Incandela. “The implications are very significant and it is precisely for this reason that we must be extremely diligent in all of our studies and cross-checks.” “It’s hard not to get excited by these results,” said CERN Research Director Sergio Bertolucci. “ We stated last year that in 2012 we would either find a new Higgs-like particle or exclude the existence of the Standard Model Higgs.
