Some people have theorized that it's because there was no log file in the backup, and it needed to be rolled forward using: RESTORE DATABASE MyDatabase WITH RECOVERY Except that, of course, fails: Msg 4333, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The database cannot be recovered because the log was not restored. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. And exactly what you want in a catastrophic situation is a restore that won't work. • Getting Started with UDK

  I've been trying for a couple of days now to learn UDK, but I seem to be stuck at making that leap to understanding how everything works together. I understand the syntax, that's all well and good, and I pretty much get how classes and .ini files interact. As for the API, I have the entire reference as pretty decent Doxygen-style HTML output. What I'm looking for is a sort of intermediate tutorial on game creation from scratch (as opposed to modding UT3 itself), more advanced than just learning language syntax, but not yet to the level of going through the API step by step. I'm looking for some guide to the structure of the internals - how GameInfo and PlayerController interact, where Pawn comes in, etc. - a way to visualize the big picture. Does anyone have a particular favorite intermediate-level tutorials (or set of tutorials) that they used when first learning UDK?

• CakePHP: shortcomings with indirectly associated models

  I'm having some issues with dealing with indirectly associated models in cakephp. My current model setup is as follows: Deliveries hasOne License License belongsTo Delivery License hasAndBelongsToMany Product (and vice-versa) License hasAndBelongsToMany ProductOption (and vice-versa) I'm trying to save information about ALL of these models inside ONE form. The shortcomings I'm running into are the following: The form helper only seems able to see the field type one level deep. saveAll() only seems able to save records one level deep (for multiple model forms). I'm searching everywhere for the solutions to these issues, but since I'm new to CakePHP, I'm not sure what the newest methods or "correct" methods are for dealing with these issues. • What are modern and old compilers written in?

  As a compiler, other than an interpreter, only needs to translate the input and not run it the performance of itself should be not that problematic as with an interpreter. Therefore, you wouldn't write an interpreter in, let's say Ruby or PHP because it would be far too slow. However, what about compilers? If you would write a compiler in a scripting language maybe even featuring rapid development you could possibly cut the source code and initial development time by halv, at least I think so. To be sure: With scripting language I mean interpreted languages having typical features that make programming faster, easier and more enjoyable for the programmer, usually at least. Examples: PHP, Ruby, Python, maybe JavaScript though that may be an odd choice for a compiler What are compilers normally written in? As I suppose you will respond with something low-level like C, C++ or even Assembler, why? Are there compilers written in scripting languages? What are the (dis)advantages of using low or high level programming languages for compiler writing?

• Hibernate list operation question

  I'm working on a utility to update a list of entities in a database as a group. The database contains a list of entities. The result of the update is a new list. The API accepts this new list. The update may end up modifying some of the entities in the list, creating new ones and deleting some. So at the entity level, I may have to do any of an insert, delete or update operation. But it's always true that the final list in the database will be the same as the list passed down to the API. Is there in Hibernate a way to treat this operation at the list level, that is, tell Hibernate to persist this list of entities, and let it take care of which need to be created, updated or deleted? There is no entity/table representing this list, btw. Just the entities themselves in a table.

• Passing parameters between interrupt handlers on a Cortex-M3 ...

  I'm building a light kernel for a Cortex-M3. From a high priority interrupt I'd like to invoke some code to run in a lower priority interrupt and pass some parameters along. I don't want to use a queue to post work to the lower priority interrupt. I just have a buffer and size to pass to it. In the proramming manual it says that the SVC interrupt handler is synchronous which presumably means that if you invoke it from an interrupt that's a lower priority than SVC's handler it gets called immediately (the upshot of this being that you can pass parameters to it as though it were a function call (a little like the BIOS calls in MS-DOS)). I'd like to do it the other way: passing parameters from a high priority interrupt to a lower priority one (at the moment I'm doing it by leaving the parameters in a fixed location in memory). What's the best way to do this (if at all possible)? Thanks,

  Hey Guys, I was wondering if you could share best practices and common mistakes when it comes to making large numbers of time-sensitive web service calls. In my case, I have a SOAP and an XML-RPC based web service to which I'm constantly making calls. I predict that this will soon become an issue as the number of calls per second will grow. On a higher level, I was thinking of batching those calls and submitting those to the web services every 100 ms. Could you share what else works? On a lower level side of the things, I use Apache Xml-Rpc client and standard javax.xml.soap.* packages for my client implementations. • Just quick: How do you call a mutator from within a constructor in the same class?

  For a homework assignment the instructions state (within Undergrad class): You do NOT need to include a default constructor, but you must write a full parameterized constructor (it takes 4 arguments) -- this constructor calls the parent class parameterized constructor and the mutator for year level. Because Undergrad extends Student, then Student is my parent class, right? I just can't quite figure out how I'm to use my year level mutator (which is just the simplest of methods) to assign my "year" attribute. public void setYear(int inYear) { year = inYear; } public Student(String inName, String inID, int inCredits) { name = inName; id = inID; credits = inCredits; } public Undergrad(String inName, String inID, int inCredits,int inYear) { super(inName, inID, inCredits); year = inYear; } I keep missing assignments because I spend too much time on these small specific points of the homework so just asking for a little help. I swear it's the wording that throws me off on these assignments almost as often as just learning the material itself.

• How can I use a custom ValidationAttribute to ensure two properties match?

  We're using xVal and the standard DataAnnotationsValidationRunner described here to collect validation errors from our domain objects and view models in ASP.NET MVC. I'd like to have a way to have that validation runner identify when two properties don't match through the use of custom DataAnnotations. Right now I'm forced into doing it outside of the runner, this way: if (!(model.FieldOne == model.FieldTwo)) errors.Add(new ErrorInfo("FieldTwo", "FieldOne must match FieldTwo", model.FieldTwo)); My question is: can this be done using property-level validation attributes, or am I forced into using class-level attributes (in which case, I'd have to modify the runner...and my follow up question would be how best to retrieve them in that case).   I have "white nights" trying to install Hebrew/Arabic fonts on my level 7 (API 2.1) aka Nexus emulator. I can't understand why Google guys will want to waist my skills do something helpful for the community using Hebrew/Arabic fonts. After rw mount/remount I can do it for level 3 devices, but for Nexus - nada! Why? What can be done? Real devices guys already broke this peace of hardware, but I am sitting and looking wide eyes open like a sheep. Please make me happy and give the chance to install the fonts. That's what must be done for some of us: We need system image saved on exit for tomorrow to continue the work Open emulator to work in peace cp command included with the SDK. Thanks for any help

• IIS Strategies for Accessing Secured Network Resources

  Problem: A user connects to a service on a machine, such as an IIS web site or a SQL Server database. The site or the database need to gain access to network resources such as file shares (the most common) or a database on a different server. Permission is denied. This is because the user the service is running under doesn't have network permissions in the first place, or if it does, it doesn't have rights to access the remote resource. I keep running into this problem over and over again and am tired of not having a really solid way of handling it. Here are some workarounds I'm aware of: Run IIS as a custom-created domain user who is granted high permissions If permissions are granted one file share at a time, then every time I want to read from a new share, I would have to ask a network admin to add it for me. Eventually, with many web sites reading from many shares, it is going to get really complicated. If permissions are just opened up wide for the user to access any file shares in our domain, then this seems like an unnecessary security surface area to present. This also applies to all the sites running on IIS, rather than just the selected site or virtual directory that needs the access, a further surface area problem. Still use the IUSR account but give it network permissions and set up the same user name on the remote resource (not a domain user, a local user) This also has its problems. For example, there's a file share I am using that I have full rights to for sharing, but I can't log in to the machine. So I have to find the right admin and ask him to do it for me. Any time something has to change, it's another request to an admin. Allow IIS users to connect as anonymous, but set the account used for anonymous access to a high-privilege one This is even worse than giving the IIS IUSR full privileges, because it means my web site can't use any kind of security in the first place. Connect using Kerberos, then delegate This sounds good in principle but has all sorts of problems. First of all, if you're using virtual web sites where the domain name you connect to the site with is not the base machine name (as we do frequently), then you have to set up a Service Principal Name on the webserver using Microsoft's SetSPN utility. It's complicated and apparently prone to errors. Also, you have to ask your network/domain admin to change security policy for both the web server and the domain account so they are "trusted for delegation." If you don't get everything perfectly right, suddenly your intended Kerberos authentication is NTLM instead, and you can only impersonate rather than delegate, and thus no reaching out over the network as the user. Also, this method can be problematic because sometimes you need the web site or database to have permissions that the connecting user doesn't have. Create a service or COM+ application that fetches the resource for the web site Services and COM+ packages are run with their own set of credentials. Running as a high-privilege user is okay since they can do their own security and deny requests that are not legitimate, putting control in the hands of the application developer instead of the network admin. Problems: I am using a COM+ package that does exactly this on Windows Server 2000 to deliver highly sensitive images to a secured web application. I tried moving the web site to Windows Server 2003 and was suddenly denied permission to instantiate the COM+ object, very likely registry permissions. I trolled around quite a bit and did not solve the problem, partly because I was reluctant to give the IUSR account full registry permissions. That seems like the same bad practice as just running IIS as a high-privilege user. Note: This is actually really simple. In a programming language of your choice, you create a class with a function that returns an instance of the object you want (an ADODB.Connection, for example), and build a dll, which you register as a COM+ object. In your web server-side code, you create an instance of the class and use the function, and since it is running under a different security context, calls to network resources work. Map drive letters to shares This could theoretically work, but in my mind it's not really a good long-term strategy. Even though mappings can be created with specific credentials, and this can be done by others than a network admin, this also is going to mean that there are either way too many shared drives (small granularity) or too much permission is granted to entire file servers (large granularity). Also, I haven't figured out how to map a drive so that the IUSR gets the drives. Mapping a drive is for the current user, I don't know the IUSR account password to log in as it and create the mappings. Move the resources local to the web server/database There are times when I've done this, especially with Access databases. Does the database have to live out on the file share? Sometimes, it was just easiest to move the database to the web server or to the SQL database server (so the linked server to it would work). But I don't think this is a great all-around solution, either. And it won't work when the resource is a service rather than a file. Move the service to the final web server/database I suppose I could run a web server on my SQL Server database, so the web site can connect to it using impersonation and make me happy. But do we really want random extra web servers on our database servers just so this is possible? No. Virtual directories in IIS I know that virtual directories can help make remote resources look as though they are local, and this supports using custom credentials for each virtual directory. I haven't been able to come up with, yet, how this would solve the problem for system calls. Users could reach file shares directly, but this won't help, say, classic ASP code access resources. I could use a URL instead of a file path to read remote data files in a web page, but this isn't going to help me make a connection to an Access database, a SQL server database, or any other resource that uses a connection library rather than being able to just read all the bytes and work with them. I wish there was some kind of "service tunnel" that I could create. Think about how a VPN makes remote resources look like they are local. With a richer aliasing mechanism, perhaps code-based, why couldn't even database connections occur under a defined security context? Why not a special Windows component that lets you specify, per user, what resources are available and what alternate credentials are used for the connection? File shares, databases, web sites, you name it. I guess I'm almost talking about a specialized local proxy server. Anyway, so there's my list. I may update it if I think of more. Does anyone have any ideas for me? My current problem today is, yet again, I need a web site to connect to an Access database on a file share. Here we go again...

• WPF: HierarchicalDataTemplate ItemsPanel

  I have a TreeView which uses a custom ItemsPanel to show the first level of items in a StackPanel, but I need to show subitems in a StackPanel too. The problem is, the second level of items are shown in a WrapPanel, and as HierarchicalDataTemplate doesn't have an itemsPanel property I'm not sure how to do this.   Hello guys, question on dock panels within gwt So i want the dockpanel to take up the whole size of the browser window dockPanel.setSize("100%", "100%"); if this correct Next Question, i am going to add a north panel , that will be 100px high and take up the whole width of the browser topPanel.setSize("100%", "100px"); dockPanel.add(topPanel, DockPanel.NORTH); is this correct, then i want to add a west panel that is 200px wide and the whole length of the browser up to just under the north panel westSideStackPanel.setSize("200px","100%") mainPanel.add(westSideStackPanel,DockPanel.WEST); i have created all this but when i look at my dockpanel there is a big gap between the west panel and the north panel the whole way accross the screen. why would this be? The north panel stays at 100px, and then there is a gap of about 100px high the whole width of the screen.

• Are there any FreeRTOS interpreted language libraries available?

  I work for a company that created firmware for several device using FreeRTOS. Lately our request for new features has surpassed how much work our firmware engineers are capable of, but we can't afford to hire anyone new right now either. Making even tiny changes requires firmware people to go in and modify things at a very low level. I've been looking for some sort of interpreted language project for FreeRTOS that would let us implement new features at a higher level. Ideally I would like to get things eventually so the devices become closer to generic computers with us writing drivers, rather than us having to implement every feature ourselves. Are there any FreeRTOS projects that interpret java, python or similar bytecode? I've looked on google, but since I'm not a firmware engineer myself I'm not sure if I'm looking for the right keywords. Thanks everyone

  Hi, I'm coding an application on Ipad, in a certain point of my application I present a ViewController with the presentModalViewController. My ViewController is a UISScrollView who take the larger of the modalView and inside it I display some images, I allow pagingEnabled so I can see all my images inside the scrollView. Sometimes I have to display more than 10 images inside the scrollView, so I have this error RECEIVE MEMORY WARNING LEVEL=1 after this one RECEIVE MEMORY WARNING LEVEL=2 and finnaly the debugger exited due to signal 10 (Sigbus). What can I do? is there a way to unload the image thats offscreen? or others things to do? Thanks,

• AsyncTask, RejectedExecutionException and Task Limit

  I am fetching lots of thumbnails from a remote server and displaying them in a grid view, using AsyncTask. The problem is, my grid view displays 20 thumbnails at a time, so that creates 20 AsyncTasks and starts 20 executes, one per thumbnail. I get RejectedExecution exception in my code. I recall reading somewhere that there is a limit to number of tasks that AsyncTask can have in its queue at a time, i might be hitting that. Was this bar lifted? Is there a way to increase this limit? Is it safe to just ignore this exception?(by having an empty catch(RejectedException e){} block?) I am running this code on Android 1.6 emulator and the API level in my code(minSDKVersion is 3). [EDIT: Added SDK and API level info]

• Style Switcher & Text Resizer Combined?

  Hi there, I've came across various style switchers that allow you to change the stylesheet (i.e. Light, Dark, High Contrast), and carious text-resizers that allow you to resize the test (usually with Three A's, small, medium and large). However, I can't seem to find a single switcher/resizer that works well together by allowing permutations of the two. i.e. so the user can choose a dark background with small text, or a dark background with large text, etc. I can only seem to get this working where the user can choose one or the other styles (large text or High Contrast, not a combination of the two). Any ideas on anything that may be suitable for this at all? Thanks, Stephen

• How do I reduce number of redundant requests with mod_perl properly?

  In a fairly big legacy project, I've refactored several hairy modules into Moose classes. Each of these modules requires database access to (lazy) fetch its attributes. Since those objects are used pretty heavily, I want to reduce the number of redundant requests, for example for unchanged data. Now, how do I do that properly? I've got several alternatives: Implement caching in my Moose classes via a role to store them in memcached with expiration of 5-10 minutes (probably not too difficult, but tricky with lazy attributes) update: KiokuDB could probably help here, have to read up about attributes Migrate to DBIx::Class (needs to be done anyway) and implement caching on this level (DBIC will probably take most of the pain away just by itself) Somehow make my objects persist inside the mod_perl process (no clue how to do this :() How would you do this and what do you consider a sane way? Is caching data preferred on object or the ORM level?

• Problem using Hibernate-Search

  Hi, I am using hibernate search for my application. It is well configured and running perfectly till some time back, when it stopped working suddenly. The reason according to me being the number of my model (bean) classes. I have some 90 classes, which I add to my configuration, while building my Hibernate Configuration. When, I disable hibernate search (remove the search annotations and use Configuration instead of AnnotationsConfiguration), I try to start my application, it Works fine. But,the same app when I enable search, it just hangs up. I tried debugging and found the exact place where it hangs. After adding all the class to my AnnotationsConfiguration object, when I say cfg.buildSessionfactory(), It never comes out of that statement. (I have waited for hours!!!) Also when I decrease the number of my model classes (like say to half i.e. 50) it comes out of that statement and the application works fine.. Can Someone tell why is this happening?? • Help with PHP recursive navigation list menu

  Hi all, I am trying to add a dynamic recursive navigation list menu to a site of am working on. The scenerio is that the menu has 2 levels related by a parentid(preid). My issue is that I can display the 1st level list correctly, however I cannot get the second level to display properly. I am not sure where to add the UL and /UL tags for the second level.
