• System speakers not recognized

  Since upgrading to Xubuntu 13.10, sound has not functioned properly (e.g. screeching when playing Skype notifications). Now, however, it does not function at all. pavucontrol only shows Dummy Output and does not recognize the built-in speakers on my Dell Precision M4600. Possibly related, the sound indicator applet does not come up when I click on it, only showing a small white bar underneath it. • Shutdown issue on persistent LiveUSB

  A) Downloaded Ubuntu to a Windows 7 temp directory from: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download (Ubuntu 11.10 - Latest version / 32-bit). The output was a .iso file. B) Created a bootable USB stick using Universal USB Installer: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/. Did not select "Persistent file". Result: Tried it in a Dell Latitude D630 Dell laptop: works every time, many startups and shutdowns. C) Repeated B) but with "Persistent file" set. Works once or twice, but then, just locks on the Ubuntu splash screen. E) Downloaded LiveUSB Install from http://live.learnfree.eu/download, which created a file on Windows 7 called live-usb-install-2.3.2.exe. F) Ran the above installer with "Persistent file" to a 4GB ScanDisk (formatted) thumb drive. Result: Worked pretty good for a while. Shutdown and rebooted several times. Changed items like creating a new directories - all worked. Then: Setup an Admin account with a password and no auto login. On next reboot, it required the password and logged in correctly. Tried to shutdown via the top left icon - Shutdown menu option. Key issue: Would not shutdown, but would always go back to the login prompt. Could successfully login. Finally, shutdown (which just put me back to the login window), and hard shutdown with the power switch. Result: On reboot, just locks on the Ubuntu splash screen. Questions (note, very new to Linux): Did I shutdown wrong (I mean prior to the hard power off)? Is the persistence option very unstable, or am I doing something else completely wrong?

• CUDA & MSI GT60 with Optimus enabled GTX670M?

  I have a MSI GT60 Laptop with an Optimus enabled GTX 670M GPU, and I have been trying to get CUDA going in Ubuntu 12.04 environment. I realize that Optimus is not supported in Linux, but I have read the following post suggesting that CUDA works for hybrid GPUs. How can I get nVidia CUDA or OpenCL working on a laptop with nVidia discrete card/Intel Integrated Graphics? I installed the NVIDIA driver via sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current The resulting driver version is 302.17, and supposedly GTX 670M is supported since 295.59. I also downloaded CUDA 4.2 from the NVIDIA site, and compiled it against nvidia-current libraries. Unfortunately, when I run deviceQuery in the CUDA SDK, I get the following output cudaGetDeviceCount returned 38 -> no CUDA-capable device is detected Checking /proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/0/information gives the following Model: GeForce GTX 670M IRQ: 16 GPU UUID: GPU-????????-????-????-????-???????????? Video BIOS: ??.??.??.??.?? • Drawing a sprite or text causes the OpenGl rendering to 'disappear' in SFML

  I'm using some SFML built in functions to draw sprites and text as an overlay on top of some OpenGL rending in an SFML RenderWindow. The opengl rendering appears fine until I add the code to draw the sprites or text. The sprite or text drawing causes the OpenGL stuff to disappear. • Pitching My Software-Should I Get a Patent? [closed]

  This Thursday I will be filming for a Canadian TV Show where I will be pitching my software to 5 Canadian Millionaires to invest in. The software is ridiculously basic but it is for sports teams, specifically football and basketball teams. (The show won't air till September) I made this in Adobe Flash using Actionscript. I have been selling the software to sports teams in the USA mostly including University Teams for $20. I have only sold 32 copies ($640), but I don't advertise, I just write articles on the subject. Now my question is this: I have no patent on this software since I have been doing this casually. Is it a bad idea to go onto this TV show and ask them for money for a software patent? Or should I be asking money for marketing/other things? Note: I also have no idea how much I should ask for. I know absolutely nothing about software patents but if it matters no other software exists that does this exact thing (however it could be easily duplicated).

• Can't install Skype on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit

• Internet Explorer 9 is coming Monday to a web near you

  Internet Explorer 9 is finally here...well almost.  Microsoft is releasing their new browser on March 14, 2011. IE9 has a number of improvements, including: Faster, Faster, Faster.  Did I mention it is faster?   With the new browsers coming out from Mozilla, Google, and Microsoft, there have been a flood of speed test coverage.  Chrome has long held the javascript speed crown.  But according to Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols over at ZDNET..."for the moment at least IE9 is actually the fastest browser I’ve tested to date."  He came to this revelation after figuring out that the 32-bit version of IE9 has the new Chakra JIT (the 64-bit version doesn't).  It also has a DirectX-based rendering engine so it can do cool tricks once reserved for desktop applications. Windows 7 Desktop Integration.  Read my post for more details.  Unfortantely, they didn't integrate my ideas...at least not yet :) Hot new UI.  Ok, they "borrowed" some ideas from Chrome...but that is the best form of flattery. Standards Compliance.  A real focus on HTML5 and CSS3.  Definite goodness for developers. So, go get yourself some IE9 on Monday and enjoy!

• Recasting and Drawing in SDL

  I have some code that essentially draws a column on the screen of a wall in a raycasting-type 3d engine. I am trying to optimize it, as it takes about 10 milliseconds do draw a million pixels using this, and the vast majority of game time is spent in this loop. However, I don't quite understand what's occurring, particularly the recasting (I modified the "pixel manipulation" sample code from the SDL documentation). • virtual install from ISO not getting virtual kernel

  I have a KVM host (12.04.5) that I have been installing guests on in variety of ways. I just noticed recently one of my guests was running a generic kernel when I'm fairly certain I specified minimum virtual machine during install from a 12.04.2 server iso. From what I understand it should be running a stripped down kernel "optimized" for VMs. I set up another server to test, this time using a 14.04.1, and sure enough I ended up with uname -r returning 3.13.0-32-generic. It seems that if I use an .iso to install, I end up with generic regardless. However building with the vmbuilder ... --flavour virtual --suite precise ... (I don't have trusty available yet) script gives me an ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS system running kernel 3.2.0-67-virtual. The server FAQ mentions I should be getting the virtual kernel. What are practical advantages of using linux-image-virtual kernel? gives me the impression that it doesn't really matter functionally (in my case I only have a couple VMs running). I first thought was maybe I was somehow not applying the correct options because the installer F4 menu doesn't really give great feedback if the mode has been selected or not. Looking in the log /var/log/installers/syslog I see Command line: file=/cdrom/preceed/ubuntu-server-minimalvm.seed ... I know that I can install the virtual kernel package down the road, but why am I not, or should I be getting the virtual flavor of kernel from an ISO install when doing an minimum VM install?

These are cumulative in nature meaning the latest bundle patch in a particular series would include the contents of the previous bundle patches released.  A suite bundle patch is an aggregation of multiple product  bundle patches that are part of a product suite. • Another VSeWSS Error Resolved (List Template not installed on Farm)

  Ran into a minor snag today trying to deploy a project with VSeWSS 1.3 - during the deployment it gave me the following error: Error    32    VSeWSS Service Error: Feature '2ade6552-200e-4425-8af5-f1f50c115b7e' for list template '10001' is not installed in this farm.  The operation could not be completed. At first glance, it looked my features were not installing in the correct order because the solution was installing a list that required a custom list definition before the custom list definition was being installed.  After switching the order in the WSP view (View -> Other Windows -> WSP View) -- you can use the up and down arrows on the view pane to switch feature installation order - I had the same error. I decided to try deleting the list, but upon visiting the list in the web interface I received a similar error about how the feature was not installed on the farm.  As such, I could not delete the list through the web interface.  Fortunately, the stsadm.exe tool worked just fine: stsadm.exe -o forcedeletelist -url <urltolisthere>

• Chromebook C720 - issue suspending and booting

  I recently bought an Acer C720 chromebook (Celeron, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD) with the intention of loading Linux and using it as a cheap development laptop while on my holiday. The installation sort of went ok but initially the trackpad didn't work so I ran a script that mostly fixed that. My current issues are: Booting: it still goes to the chrome "unknown os" white screen - I have to press ctrl L - then escape then 1 then wait for 30 secs while it seems to be searching for something. Then Ubunto loads up fine. Any idea how to fix this? Suspend: if I close the lid of the laptop then it doesn't seem to suspend properly. At least when I open the lid the screen appears to be on but the screen is blank with a cursor. Nothing responds on the keyboard and I have to hold the power down to restart it. The suspend from the top menu has the same issue. Moving windows: I don't have a mouse click button so how do I move windows around the screen? Launcher bar: I've set mine to auto hide (which it does) but what exactly do you have to do to get it back? I just repeatedly jab the mouse at the side of the screen and eventually it pops up. I don't mind starting all over again but obviously a quick fix is preferred ;) Mike Ubunto 14.04.1 LTS Kernel 3.13.0-32-generic PS Sorry for so many questions.

• 14.04.1 LTS 64 bit from USB does not see my windows 7 when I go to install it

  I suppose this is as much a question as a heads up/warning 14.04.1 LTS only gave me the option of writing over everything on one of my windows 7 machines. If I'd pushed the wrong button and continued I would have lost some mighty important items. On a similar windows laptop I succesfully installed 14.04.1 LTS 32 bit alongside windows 7 rather easily ( and I dig it!), there was a prompt in that case that let me select to install it alongside my windows OS.Yikes, not in this case. This laptop was formatted NTFS, the Ubuntu usb pendrive I formatted fat32. could be a clue? It looks like there is an advanced install ubuntu, but I am not that advanced. I may try to use windows diskformat (What fdisk is gone?) to make a partition, then see if the ubuntu on my usb stick "sees" my windows. If anybody has a better plan let me know. Mahalo AHA!? p.s. its a SSD harddrive, perhaps thats the crux?

• Sound not working after installing PCI video card and then removing it

  I am running 11.10 on a HP/Compaq Presario sr1010z, and the video/audio was working fine with whatever was in the machine already. Then I installed a new video card (PCI/nVidia), which disabled the audio/video on the old one automatically. But that card didn't work out too well so I removed it. Now the video is back to normal, but the audio is gone. I have tried the following: 1. In BIOS, set audio to on/enable rather than Auto 2. Looked for hardware in System Settings Sound, but nothing shows up there 3. But when I run the sysinfo utility, I get the description of the audio controller When I do a 'sudo aplay -l', I get 'aplay: device_list:240: no soundcards found...' • There's IP but can't reach gateway

  I have just installed ubuntu 12.04 on my new laptop, and brought it back to home, but I found the wireless network does not work. Strangely, it has the correct ip, but can't connect to the gateway. ifconfig gives ip 192.168.64.36, with broadcast 192.168.79.255 and mask 255.255.240.0, this are all correct, the gateway is at 192.168.64.1 cat /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 192.168.64.1 nameserver 127.0.0.1 which i think it's also right. but when I ping 192.168.64.1, all packages are lost. Please help me with this, I really do not know what happened to my network settings. • Fix: Cant Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008 from DVD

  If you installed Visual Studio 2008 on a 64-bit operating system, you may have trouble when you try ad add or remove functionality by inserting the disk (or remounting the ISO image).  I believe this is because of the path used to install the 32-bit Visual Studio program.  When you run the setup.exe off of the disk, you get this: Clicking on Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008 brings up this dialog: But not long after it appears, it disappears to be replaced with: Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Setup A problem has been encountered while loading the setup components.  Canceling setup. FIX: Use Add or Remove Programs Launch the Add or Remove Programs dialog in Windows, and find Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite ENU (or whichever SKU you installed).  Click Uninstall/Change.  From here you should be able to change your installed components of Visual Studio successfully: Thanks to Brendan for the tip! • How to prevent window list "confusion" when detaching eclipse views?

  I'm detaching eclipse views to float on my other screen in order to get more coding space on the first screen. When doing that, the detached windows appear in ubuntu's window list applet with the eclipse icon but with no title. Then, when pushing the main eclipse button on the window list, one of the detached views will get to front but not the main eclipse window. When using Alt+tab I can also see the extra eclipse icons but choosing the correct one for the main window works and make it the active window while also showing all detached childs. Other applications behave as expected, e.g. gimp floating panels don't show on the windows list and this is also the case with SlickEdit, Firefox child windows all show on window list but gets the focus correctly, etc. I can see the the workspace switcher show my two screens but in 'Monitor preferences' I see my two screens as one big screen. I'm working with ubuntu 10.04.4 under a VMware Workstation 7.1.3 build-324285. 'uname -a' output: Linux ubuntu 2.6.32-40-generic #87-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 6 00:56:56 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux The desktop screen shot with the problem, ununtu's version, and Monitor preferences. How can I solve it and make only the main window show in window list or at least get activated when pushing it's button on the window list?

• Subdomain still times out after set up a month ago

  I'm a newbie on this and this has probably been asked already but the subjects online were close but too vague in there answers so I've probably really messed this up. I would really appreciate specific step by step instructions. This is what I'd like to do: use the subdomain www.high-res.domain.com to be accessed by external customers with specific permissions to access the site (like ftp). We use Network Solutions to house domain.com. We recently added a new ip address to point to www.high-res.domain.com. I gave the ip address to the company that hosts our website. I pinged www.high-res.domain.com and it points to the correct ip address but still times out. It’s been a few weeks now and when you ping it, it still times out. C:ping XXX.XXX.X.XXX Pinging XXX.XXX.X.XXX with 32 bytes of data: Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Ping statistics for XXX.XXX.X.XXX: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss). Tracert times out as well. I even went to DNS tools and a few other sites for checking this and it shows the same thing. I recently went into the DNSmgmt on our server (wink2k3sp1) and created an A record under the DomainDnsZones which translated to a Cname when you look at it. Under the Domain it has two entries one to the subdomain and the other to the website host each with separate ip addresses. Is this correct? The website people are too busy on another project to research it further and my friends haven't gotten back to me. Please help. Thanks KK

• Unable to install ubuntu on a AMD 64 bit system with a AMD Radeon HD 6670 graphics card

  I’ve been running a dual boot system (Ubuntu/Windows7) for two years or so with no problems. I recently built an AMD 64 Bit System, re-installed Windows but when I went to load Ubuntu inside Windows, hit a snag. The screen view during installation became small square blocks of colour, which obviously is a graphics drive problem. I tried various live disks both 32 & 64 bit for, Ubuntu 12.04, 11.10 & 10.10, all but Ubuntu 10.10 had the same problem. Ubuntu 10.10 loaded ok, installed the presented ATI graphics driver as usual but was left with the AMD Unsupported watermark at the bottom right of the screen. The graphics card installed in the computer is an MSI ATI Radeon HD 6670 (in effect an AMD Radeon HD 6670). I am fairly new to linux and while I can install and tweak the OS, I am rather baffled as to what to do. So my question is will an up to date ATI Driver be released in the near future for installation/live disks? Or am I going to have to downgrade my graphics card to use linux? Yours Tom Wingrove
