  I have a laptop with dead battery that when there is no current connected to it turns critical so fast and in the energy management in ubuntu, when the battery is critical, there are 2 options: shutdown and hibernate witch is in grey (unclickable), so I have no choice but to chose immediate shutdown, there is no standby even if it is an option in the screen behavior. After this operation, 57.3kB of additional disk space will be used. debconf: delaying package configuration, since apt-utils is not installed Selecting previously deselected package postgresql. (Reading database ... 42866 files and directories currently installed.) Unpacking postgresql (from .../postgresql_8.4.9-0ubuntu0.10.04_all.deb) ... Setting up postgresql (8.4.9-0ubuntu0.10.04) ... • How can I upgrade my server's kernel without rebooting?

  This is a loaded question because I'm already aware of, and am very interested in ksplice. The problem is that since they were bought by Oracle, they have been forced to pull numerous server distributions from the offerings. The answer isn't as simple as it once was. I noticed a question on Unix.SE that states: You can build your own ksplice patches to dynamically load into your own kernel Great! But how?! I've installed the free ksplice package in the repo on my desktop (not ksplice-uptrack which is non-free) and now want to generate and apply updates. What's the process? Are there any scripts out there to automate the process? Moreover, if all the machinery required for rebootless upgrades is sitting there in the kernel (and ksplice package), why on earth aren't we taking advantage of it by default? Note 1: I am happy for a solution beside ksplice but it has to deliver the same thing: rolling updates to the kernel that can be applied without rebooting the server. Note 2: I'll say it again; the main ksplice "service" does not support Ubuntu Server. It used to but it doesn't any more. When I talk about wanting to use ksplice, I'm talking about the open source tools in the ksplice package. Any answer that talks about ksplice-uptrack is probably not what I'm after as this is the part that integrates directly with aforementioned "service".

  How do I continue upgrade or fix upgrade as upgrading in 13.04 to 13.10 failed. I'm currently running terminal in restore mode. I get the error unmet dependencies, but tried to install apt-get -f install, but get this error: unable to fetch some archives. using apt-get update also brings errors for example: failed to fetch http: archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dists/quantal/release.gpg Could not resolve 'archive.canonical.com. Is it my internet connection? Its currently connected via a network cable and internet is on other computers. If internet on my ubuntu 13.10, how do I switch it on? or how can fix my upgrade problem that I can boot ubuntu normal, backup, then format and reload ubuntu 13.10 properly? I posted this problem that has also linked to this problem I mentioned: upgrading to ubuntu 13.10 failed/crashed. I did manager to install/upgrade some of the files and got ubuntu 13.10 to reboot, but not 100%, as it is slow and the unity desktop is not showing 100%. in trying some of the commands online, I get the error that the activity manager is not installed, when trying to install it, it conflicts with activity-log-manager-common. Please assist.

  I asked this question an year ago in StackOverflow and never got a good answer. Since Programmers seems to be a better place to ask it, I'll give it a try... What is the better way to work with release management? More specifically what would be the best way to release packages? For example, assuming that you have a relatively stable system, a good quality assurance process (QA), etc. How do you prefer to release new versions? Let's assume that we are talking about a mid to large "centralized" web system (no clients), in-house development. This system can be considered "vital" for a corporate operations. I have a tendency to prefer to do this by releasing packets at regular intervals, not greater than 1 to 3 months. During this period, I will include into the package,fixes and improvements and make the implementation in production environment only once. But I've seen some people who prefer to place small changes in production, but with a greater frequency. The claim of these people is that by doing so, it is easier to identify bugs that have gone through the process of QA: in a package with 10 changes and another with only 1, it is much easier to know what caused the problem in the package with just one change... What is the opinion came from you?

  I am trying to set up a server on my home network which will eventually host rails. I am not great in linux server and i try to follow the prompt. I did succesfully get to a black screen which then prompts me to a username then password to then do anything ( assuming). However here what i try to do I kinda fellow his tutorial http://www.ubuntugeek.com/step-by-step-ubuntu-11-04-natty-lamp-server-setup.html but however the command where not 100% like him not in same order but same idea. • SSIS Send Mail Task and ForceExecutionValue Error

  I tried to use the "ForcedExecutionValue" on several Send Mail Tasks and log the execution into a ExecValueVariable so that at the end of the package I can log into a table to say whether the data check is successful or not (by determine whether an email was sent out) I set up a Boolean variable that is accessible at the package level, then set up my Send Mail Task as the screenshot below with Boolean as my ForcedExecutionValueType.  When I run the package, I got the error described below. Just to make sure this is not another issue of SSIS having with Boolean type ( you also can't set variable value from xp_cmdshell of type Boolean), I used variables of types String, Int32, DateTime with the corresponding ForcedExecutionValueType.  The only way to get around this error, was to set my variable to type Object, but then when you try to get the value out later, the Object is null. I didn't spend enough time on this to see whether it's really a bug in SSIS or not, or is this just how Send Mail Task works.  Just want to log the error and will circle back on this later to narrow down the issue some more.  In the meantime, please share if you have run into the same problem.  The current workaround is to attach a script task at the end. Also, need to note 2 existing limitation: Data check needs to be done serially because every check needs to be inner join to a master table.  The master table has all the data in a single XML column and hence need to be retrieved with XQuery (a fundamental design flaw that needs to be changed) The next iteration will be to change this design into a FOR loop and pull out the checking query from a table somewhere with all the info needed for email task, but is being put to the back of the priority. Error Message: Error: 0xC001F009 at CountCheckBetweenODSAndCleanSchema: The type of the value being assigned to variable "User::WasErrorEmailEverSent" differs from the current variable type. Variables may not change type during execution. Variable types are strict, except for variables of type Object.   I wanted to install teamviewer on linux 64-bit system. What I did was to download teamviewer.deb file and install it as below: sudo dpkg -i install teamviewer.deb Then I wanted to correct dependency problem so I issued the following command: sudo apt-get install libc6:i386 libgcc1:i386 libasound2:i386 libfreetype6:i386 zlib1g:i386 libsm6:i386 libxdamage1:i386 libxext6:i386 libxfixes3:i386 libxrender1:i386 libxtst6:i386 I got the following error: E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. E: Unable to correct dependencies I then tried: sudo apt-get install -f Again I got the following error: E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. E: Unable to correct dependencies Even I tried to install gdebi, but I got the above error again. I emptied archives folder: sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade Again I have problem installing my deb package. Is there anything I could do now to solve this problem? • RDA and Fusion Middleware Diagnostic Framework Integration

  Further to my last blog entry "FMw Diagnostic Framework : Automatic Capture of Diagnostic Data Upon First Failure!" I have spent some time exploring how Remote Diagnostic Agent (RDA) integrates with Diagnostic Framework. Remote Diagnostic Agent, by default, collects the information about the last 10 incidents which have been captured in the Automatic Diagnostic Repository (ADR). This information can be located via RDA's Start Page Menu system. See screenshot below. Screenshot - Viewing Diagnostic Framework Incident Information in a RDA Package Note: In the next release of RDA - version 4.30 - the Diagnostic Repository menu label will have it's own position in the weblogic managed server sub menu hierarchy rather than be a child menu item of the logs menuDiagnostic Framework is also capable of launching RDA engine and including the output in an incident package. This is achieved via the command "IPS GENERATE PACKAGE". The RDA output is written to DOMAIN_HOME/servers/<server name>/adr/diag/ofm/<domain name>/<server name>/incpkg/pkg_[number]/seq_[number]/rda The RDA collected files are best viewed (as shown in the screenshot above) by opening the RDA Start Page - "DFW__start.htm" - from this directory in a browser. If you do not have a browser available on the host machine, zip the contents of the rda directory and transfer and extract to a machine which has a browser.  The explanation of the integration goes a little deeper.   I have a problem installing drivers for my DCP-1400 printer. I am using Ubuntu 11.10 and am new to Ubuntu and Linux in general. I downloaded the lpr and cupswrapper files from the Brother linux site into my Download directory. I next run Terminal and switch to the Downloads directory. At the prompt I type in the following: sudo dpkg -i --force-all dcp1400lpr-1.1.2-1.386.deb It asks for my password which I type in and press Enter. I get the following errors: (Reading database ... 155195 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace dcp1400lpr 1.1.2-1 (using dcp1400lpr-1.1.2-1.i386.deb) ... • Chrome window controls in xubuntu 12.04

  I'm a long time ubuntu 10.04 LTS user, very used to having window controls on top left borders. New computer with new video card requires newer kernel. Unity doesn't suit and much googling turned up recommendations for xubuntu. Installed 12.04 and first aggravation is window controls at upper right a la Windows. No problem ... Settings Manager - Windows Manager - rearrange button layout Fixes everything until ... I abandoned firefox long ago because of memory leak issues and general fat. I fetch a current version of chrome (19.0.1084.52) and install. Once adblock is added and it's the default browser, everything's great. Except ... Alone among all applications, chrome will not honour the window manager's preferred button layout. Buttons are at upper right no matter what I try. Uninstall and then reinstall: nope. Trawl through /home/user/.config/google-chrome/* looking for a likely setting: nope. Search the web: nothing useful. How do I get chrome's window decoration in sync? Thanks very much for any and all help.

• Introducing a (new) test method to a team

  A couple of months ago i was hired in a new job. (I'm fresh out of my Masters in software engineering) The company mainly consists of ERP consultants, but I was hired in their fairly small web department (6 developers), our main task is ERP/ecom integration (ERP-integrated web shops). The department is growing, and recently my manager asked me to start thinking about introducing tests to the team, i love a challenge, but frankly I'm a bit scared (I'm the least experience member of the team). Currently the method of testing is clicking around in the web shop and asking the customer if the products are there, if they look okay, and if orders are posted correctly to the ERP. We are getting a lot of support cases on previous projects, where a customer or a customer's customer have run into errors, which - i suppose - is why my manager wants more structured testing. Off the top of my head, I though of some (obvious?) improvements, like looking at the requirement specification, having an issue tracker, enabling team members to register their time on a "tests"-line on the budget, and to circulate tasks amongst members of the team. But as i see it we have three main challenges: general website testing. (javascript, C#, ASP.NET and CMS integration tests) (live) ERP integration testing (customers rarely want to pay for test environments). adopting a method in the team I like the responsibility, but I am afraid that I'm in a little bit over my head. I expect that my manager expects me to set up some kind of workshop for the team where I present some techniques and ideas and where we(the team) can find some solutions together. What I learned in school was mostly unit testing and program verification, not so much testing across multiple systems and applications. What I'm looking for here, is references/advice/pointers/anecdotes; anything that might help me to get smarter and to improve the current method of my team. Thanks!! (TL;DR: read the bold parts)

• DPKG errors after upgrade to 12.10

It was just 5, but them i got an update for unity, and now unity-common is added to the trouble makers. which prevents me from further upgrading the actual unity package as this package is a dependancy.....
