• Can't get virtual desktops to show up on RDWeb for Server 2012 R2

  I built a test lab using the Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview. The initial test lab has the following configuration (I have replaced our name with "OurCompanyName" because I would like it if Google searches for our name did not cause people to come to this site, please do the same in any responses) Physical hardware running Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview full GUI, acting as Hyper-V host (joined to the test domain as testVwHost.testVw.OurCompanyName.com) with the following VM's running on it VM running 2012 R2 Core acting as domain controller for the forest testVw.OurCompanyName.com (testDC.testVw.OurCompanyName.com) VM running 2012 R2 Core with nothing running on it joined to the test domain as testIIS.testVw.OurCompanyName.com A clean install of Windows 7, all that was done to it was all windows updates where loaded and sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /mode:vm was run on it A clean install of Windows 8, all that was done to it was all windows updates where loaded and sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /mode:vm was run on it I then ran "Add Roles and Features" from testVwHost and chose the "Remote Desktop Services Installation", "Standard Deployment", "Virtual machine-based desktop deployment". I choose testIIS for the roles "RD Connection Broker" and "RD Web Access" and testVwHost as "RD Virtualization Host" The Install of the roles went fine, I then went to Remote Desktop Services in server manager and wet to setup Deployment Properties. I set the certificate for all 3 roles to our certificate signed by a CA for *.OurCompanyName.com. I then created a new Virtual Desktop Collection for Windows 7 and Windows 8 and both where created without issue. On the Windows 7 pool I added RemoteApp to launch WordPad, For windows 8 I did not add any RemoteApp programs. Everything now appears to be fine from a setup perspective however if I go to https://testIIS.testVw.OurCompanyName.com/RDWeb and log in as the use Administrator (or any orher user) I don't see the virtual desktops I created nor the RemoteApp publishing of WordPad. I tried adding a licensing server, using testDC as the server but that made no difference. What step did I miss in setting this up that is causing this not to show up on RDWeb? If any additional information is needed pleas let me know. I have tried every possible thing I can think of and I am just groping around in the dark now. • Unable to start sql service when TCP/IP is enabled under SSCM - SS Network Configuration

  I get error 10048. and this in event history: The SQL server service terminated with server-specific error. Only one usage of each socket (protcol/network address/port) is normall permitted. Any idea howto fix this ? Port set is the default 1433... If this is turned off, which is default of course, SQL service starts like a champ. I have done this config many times on other servers with no problem.

• A dusty server room

  Here's the story.. The owners of the building we lease office space from decided to do a renovation of the exterior. This involved in some pretty heavy work at the level where our server room is, including exchanging windows wich are fit inside a concrete wall. My red alert went off when I heard that they were going to do the same thing with our server room (yes, our server room has a window. We're a small shop with 3 racks. The window is secured with steel bars.) I explicity told the contractor that they need to put up a temporarily wall between our racks and the original wall - and to make sure that the temporary wall is 100 % air and water-tight. They promised to do so. The temporary wall has a small door in it, so that workers can go in/out through the day (through our server room, wich was the only option....). On several occasions I could find the small door half-way shut while working evenings/nights. I locked the door, and thought that they would hopefully get the point soon and keep the door shut. I even gave a electrician a mouthful when I saw that he didn't close the door properly. By this point - I bet that most of you get a picture of what happened. Yes, they probably left the door open while drilling in the concrete. I present you our 4 weeks old EMC VNX: I'll even put in a little bonus, here is the APC UPS one rack further away from the temporary wall. See the nice little landing strip from my finger? What should I do? The only thing that comes to mind is to either call all our suppliers (EMC, HP, Dell, Cisco) and get them to send technicians to check out all the gear in the server room, or get some kind of certified 3rd-party consulant to check all of it. Would you run production systems on this gear? How long? Edit: I should also note that our aircondition isn't exactly enterprise-grade, given the nature of our small room. It's just a single inverter, wich have failed one time before I started working here (failed inverters usually leads to water dripping out).

• Deletion of SQL Profiler Trace files (.trc)

  We've noticed a lot of .trc files in our SQL data folder (\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data) on our server. The date range for these files spans over one day and the total file size of all files together is about 21 gigs. I'd like to free up this space but I'm not sure if I can just delete the files manually through Windows Explorer or if I need to do anything in SQL, like run a command or script. Any ideas?

A domain user account was created with same username and password as my previous local administrator account. Now I unable to login using my local account. • Cannot establish XMPP server-to-server connection with gmail

  My jabber-server fails to connect to gmail.com giving the error: outgoing s2s stream myserver.com.ua-bot.talk.google.com closed: undefined-condition (myserver.com.ua is a Google Apps Domain with Talk service enabled.) I am using the Prosody XMPP server. It works just fine with other jabber-servers I tested so far (e.g. jabber.ru). However, when some of my clients tries to add a gmail contact to his contact-list, the subscription request lasts forever, and the Prosody gives the following sequence of messages in its log: Oct 21 22:57:16 s2sout95897f8 info Beginning new connection attempt to gmail.com ([173.194.70.125]:5269) Oct 21 22:57:16 s2sout95897f8 info sent dialback key on outgoing s2s stream Oct 21 22:57:16 s2sout95897f8 info Session closed by remote with error: undefined-condition (myserver.com.ua is a Google Apps Domain with Talk service enabled.) As for the Google services, I did have a google account where I added the domain name under question to the Webmasters tools page. However, I deleted my account long ago, so now it is unclear, how any of the Google services can relate to my domain name. So my question is: What is the real cause of this problem (my jabber-server configuration or imaginary Google account or something else) and how can I make my Prosody server connect to gmail.com jabber service?

• What configuration management solutions exist in a non-networked environment?

  My servers exist in an environment without outside network connectivity (this is a requirement), so when I deploy updates all packages, binaries, config files, etc. must be included on the delivered media. And of course I want some sort of configuration management so I can tell what has and hasn't been installed. So I was wondering if people had experience with chef, puppet, or another configuration management type tool for dealing with this type of environment. Worst case I deploy my updates as an RPM. EDIT: My setup has both Linux servers and Windows servers.

  What are the steps to make a schema change to a SQL Server 2005 database using transactional replication? I'm trying to add a database column. I thought if I removed the article for the table, made the schema change, and then added the article for the table back that the schema change would replicate. I am now getting the following error every minute or so: SQL Server errors Replication-Replication Distribution Subsystem: agent [jobname] failed. Invalid column name 'NewColumn'.

• How do large blobs affect SQL delete performance, and how can I mitigate the impact?

  I'm currently experiencing a strange issue that my understanding of SQL Server doesn't quite mesh with. We use SQL as our file storage for our internal storage service, and our database has about half a million rows in it. Most of the files (86%) are 1mb or under, but even on fresh copies of our database where we simply populate the table with data for the purposes of a test, it appears that rows with large amounts of data stored in a BLOB frequently cause timeouts when our SQL Server is under load. My understanding of how SQL Server deletes rows is that it's a garbage collection process, i.e. the row is marked as a ghost and the row is later deleted by the ghost cleanup process after the changes are copied to the transaction log. This suggests to me that regardless of the size of the data in the blob, row deletion should be close to instantaneous. However when deleting these rows we are definitely experiencing large numbers of timeouts and astoundingly low performance. In our test data set, its files over 30mb that cause this issue. This is an edge case, we don't frequently encounter these, and even though we're looking into SQL filestream as a solution to some of our problems, we're trying to narrow down where these issues are originating from. We ARE performing our deletes inside of a transaction. We're also performing updates to metadata such as file size stats, but these exist in a separate table away from the file data itself. Hierarchy data is stored in the table that contains the file information. Really, in the end it's not so much what we're doing around the deletes that matters, we just can't find any references to low delete performance on rows that contain a large amount of data in a BLOB. We are trying to determine if this is even an avenue worth exploring, or if it has to be one of our processes around the delete that's causing the issue. Are there any situations in which this could occur? Is it common for a database server to come to the point of complete timeouts when many of these deletes are occurring simultaneously? Is there a way to combat this issue if it exists? (cross-posted from StackOverflow )

• Unable to telnet out on port 25 on windows server 2008

  Hi All, I just setup a Windows 2008 R2 server and am trying to get a basic mail server up and running so that I can send emails from my applications. I setup a virtual SMTP server in IIS6 and tried doing a local telnet to port 25, which seemed to work fine. There were no errors during this stage and I can see the mail message appear in the Queue folder. The problem is that mail never leaves the Queue folder. I then tried to telnet to a remote mail server on port 25 but couldn't connect:- telnet 209.85.227.27 25 Could not open connection to the host, on port 25: Connection failed) I checked my firewall and there is a default setting to allow all outgoing TCP traffic with no restriction. I even setup a specific rule for outgoing port 25 traffic but to no avail. I then ran a SmtpDiag.exe command .\SmtpDiag.exe [email protected] [email protected] and received the following output Searching for Exchange external DNS settings. Computer name is WIN-SERVERNAME. Failed to connect to the domain controller. Error: 8007054b Checking SOA for gmail.com. Checking external DNS servers. Checking internal DNS servers. SOA serial number match: Passed. Checking local domain records. Checking MX records using TCP: gmail.com. Checking MX records using UDP: gmail.com. Both TCP and UDP queries succeeded. Local DNS test passed. To start the application there are links on the client's desktops which runs the \fileserver\AppPath\exe. Would you agree with such a layout? What if 'the client' is a terminal-server and 'the clients' means a terminal-server-farm?

• Shortcut to "printer and faxes" on another computer

  I have a print server running windows server 2008 that has about 50 printers on it. In windows XP, I was able to connect to the server using the UNC name and make a shortcut to the "printers and faxes" folder. (For the record, I know that it really isn't a folder, but that's outside the scope of this question.) I have recently switched to windows 7 and I find that the jump lists are really useful. One of the things I want to do is make it easy to connect to that server's "printers and faxes" folder. I would like to use something like a shortcut that I can open and go immediately to that location. The problem is that windows 7 doesn't have a way to create a shortcut like you could in WinXP. They have a button on the toolbar that says "view remote printers" which sends you to the correct folder. I'd like to avoid having to type out the server name. I also can't use the "view network" link in windows explorer. Our organization has over 6,000 machines and viewing the network lists all of them. This is all about saving time by using the minimum number of mouse clicks and key presses in normal operation. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have applied a Group Policy to clean temporary internet files on exit i.e to delete all temporary internet files when users close the browser. But the group policy doesn't seem to work as user profile size keeps on increasing and the major space is occupied by temporary internet files therefore increasing the disk usage. How can i enforce automatic deletion of temporary internet files?

Instead of uploading files using FTP from my local machine, there is other way to transfer code from one server to other. What I am thinking I will make zip file of whole code to be transfer and place it in webroot. • Strange mysql problem moving website from Ubuntu server to Mac server

  I'm moving a website (php/mysql) from an Ubuntu server to a OSX 10.6 server. I've set up apache to run php scripts and setup the newest version of mysql on the mac. I just copied all of the php files and dumped/imported all of the mysql databases (including the mysql users database). When I visit the page being served on the Mac the page is able to connect to the database, but not query. Specifically this function mysql_error() is returning this error message NO SUCH FILE OR DIRECTORY The reason it's strange is that I'm able to change the php connection strings for mysql on the Ubuntu server so that it points to the Mac server and the page works correctly (so it seems mysql is correctly set up on the mac and definitely contains all of the users and tables it should). Thinking it was something to do with file permissions on the mac, I've changed all of the files 755 and it hasn't helped. Any ideas? Thanks!! • Mostly offsite asset management (laptops/smartphones) - what is a good SaaS based solution?

  Most of our company assets are offsite. Everyone either works at home or onsite at a customer. Most asset management/audit/remote control software concentrate on company LAN based assets. We don't need an NMS as we use OpenNMS in the internal network. I was thinking of something like Altiris Client Management Suite but since everything is connected to the internet a SaaS based solution sounds like the ways to go. LogMeIn Central looks ok but not that comprehensive. What do you guys use?

• Missing menu items for Azure SQL tables within SQL Server Management Studio?

  I have a table (say Table1) that is replicated via SQL Data Sync Agent across a local SQL Server 2012 as well as an Azure SQL Server (part of Microsoft Azure). Everything about Table1 (schema, table values etc ) is identical to the best of my understanding. However, when I list and right click Table1 from Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2012 (SSMS), I get some very different menu options, even for seemingly basic stuff. Lets focus only on the 'Design' menu item: It is visible for Table1 on the local SQL server in SSMS It is missing for Table1 on Azure SQL via SSMS It is visible for Table1 (as Open Table Definition) on Azure SQL when reaching it via Visual Studio 2012 (Server Explorer - Data connections) This is seen in the screenshots below: Now I use scripts from some real stuff (esp when I need to check in the SQL scripts etc) but this difference concerns me to some extent. Am I witnessing just a tools artifact in SQL Server Management Studio when connecting to Azure SQL? or is it something more serious about limitations of Azure SQL itself (although, just seeing the Design surface is so basic!)?

• Connecting two servers together - How to?

  Is it possible to connect two servers running for example Windows Server 2003/2008 together. For example they are seen on the network as one server with the combination of all HDD from each server? • Default user profile getting filled with temp ie files

  I have several Windows Server 2003 Terminal servers to service our domain users. Sometimes the Default User profile (C:\Documents and Settings\Default User) gets filled with tempoary internet files, so when a new user logs in, he gets a 1GB profile (instead of 20MB) that fills up the server fast. Why is it the default user profile gets filled up with files like that, by who and how do i prevent this?
