  • Open Source: Why not release into Public Domain?

    I have recently been wondering why so little code is ever released as 'Public Domain'. MIT and BSD licenses are becoming extremely popular and practically only have the restriction of license propagation. The reasons I can think of so far are: Credit - aka Prestige, Street-cred, 'Props', etc. Authors don't want usage of the code restricted, but they also want credit for creating the code. Two problems with this reason. I have seen projects copy/paste the MIT or BSD license without adding the 'Copyright InsertNameHere' thereby making it a tag-along license that doesn't give them credit. I have talked to authors who say they don't care about people giving them credit, they just want people to use their code. Public Domain would make it easier for people to do so. License Change - IANAL, but I believe by licensing their code, even with an extremely nonrestrictive license, this means they can change the license on a later revision? This reason is not good for explaining most BSD/MIT licensed code which seems to have no intent of ever becoming more restrictive. AS IS - All licenses seem to have the SCREAMING CAPS declaration saying that the software is 'as is' and that the author offers no implied or express warranty. IANAL, but isn't this implied in public domain? Am I missing some compelling reason? The authors I have talked to about this basically said something along the lines of "BSD/MIT just seems like what you do, no one does public domain". Is this groupthink in action, or is there a compelling anti-public domain argument? Thanks EDIT: I am specifically asking about Public Domain vs BSD/MIT/OtherEquallyUnrestrictiveLicense. Not GPL. Please understand what these licenses allow, and this includes: Selling the work, changing the work and not 'giving the changes back', and incorporating the work in a differently (such as commercially) licensed work.   • QueryReadStore loads JSON into DataGrid, but JsonRestStore does not (from the same source)

    I'm building a Dojo DataGrid from JSON data provided by my REST interface. The DataGrid loads the data fine using a QueryReadStore, but doesn't seem to work with the same same data piped into a JsonRestStore. I'm using the following Dojo libs with Dojo 1.4.1: dojo.require("dojox.data.JsonRestStore"); dojo.require("dojox.grid.DataGrid"); dojo.require("dojox.data.QueryReadStore"); dojo.require("dojo.parser"); I declare my stores in the following manner: var storeJRS = new dojox.data.JsonRestStore({target:"api/collaborations.php/1", idAttribute: 'items[].id'}); var storeQRS = new dojox.data.QueryReadStore({url:"api/collaborations.php/1", requestMethod:"get"}); I create my grid layout like this: var gridLayout = [ new dojox.grid.cells.RowIndex({ name: "Row #", width: 5, styles: "text-align: left;" }), { name: "Name", field: "name", styles: "text-align:right;", width:20 }, { name: "Description", field: "description", width:30 } ]; I create my DataGrid as follows: The above works, but if I use QueryReadStore as my store, the grid is created with the headers (Name, Description), but it isn't populated with any rows: <div dojoType="dojox.grid.DataGrid" jsid="grid3" store="storeQRS" structure="gridLayout" style="height:500px; width:1000px;"></div> Using FireBug, I can see that QueryReadStore is getting my JSON data from my REST interface. It looks like the following: {"numRows":6,"items":[{"name":"My Super Cool Collab","description":"This is for all the super cool people in the super cool group","id":1},{"name":"My Other Super Cool","description":"This is for all the other super cool people","id":3},{"name":"This is another coll","description":"This is just some other collab","id":4},{"name":"some new collab","description":"this is a new collab","id":5},{"name":"yet another new coll","description":"uh huh","id":6},{"name":"asdf","description":"asdf","id":7}]} Any ideas?   • Searching in Xcode not finding results (searching my source)

    I'm pulling my hair out on this and Google results are skewed since it thinks I want to find out how to code something. My problem is that when trying to search my code with the String Matching box it finds nothing, even if I enter something that is on the screen below. Is it Spotlight that is delivering these results? I'm not excluding anything in my Spotlight index so should I just rebuild the index? Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • A tool to find and fix incomplete source code documentation

    I have several finished, older PHP projects with a lot of includes that I would like to document in javadoc/phpDocumentor style. While working through each file manually and being forced to do a code review alongside the documenting would be the best thing, I am, simply out of time constraints, interested in tools to help me automate the task as much as possible. The tool I am thinking about would ideally have the following features: Parse a PHP project tree and tell me where there are undocumented files, classes, and functions/methods (i.e. elements missing the appropriate docblock comment) Provide a method to half-way easily add the missing docblocks by creating the empty structures and, ideally, opening the file in an editor (internal or external I don't care) so I can put in the description. Optional: Automatic recognition of parameter types, return values and such. But that's not really required. The language in question is PHP, though I could imagine that a C/Java tool might be able to handle PHP files after some tweaking. Thanks for your great input!

Notes: I've already found SLOCCount which seems quite nice. It requires Cygwin. Yes, I can wrote a simple script for basic information but I'm looking for something more complex. Do you know about alternatives for Windows? Thanks!

  • Loading and storing encryption keys from a config source

    I am writing an application which has an authenticity mechanism, using HMAC-sha1, plus a CBC-blowfish pass over the data for good measure. This requires 2 keys and one ivec. I have looked at Crypto++ but the documentation is very poor (for example the HMAC documentation). So I am going oldschool and use Openssl. Whats the best way to generate and load these keys using library functions and tools ? I don't require a secure-socket therefore a x.509 certificate probably does not make sense, unless, of-course, I am missing something. So, do I need to write my own config file, or is there any infrastructure in openssl for this ? If so, could you direct me to some documentation or examples for this.

  • Any good source of explanatory documentation on ColorMatrix?

    I'd like to try using ColorMatrix, but am only able to find examples that convert an image to grayscale. And even then, they tend to be presented as a chunk of 'magic numbers' code with no explanation. Does anyone know of a 'tutorial' on how to use ColorMatrix? For example I'd be interested in converting a grayscale image to a color image, where white == transparent, and black = a solid color, with gray pixels somewhere in between. Could ColorMatrix do that?

  • Publishing artifacts with sources on archiva

    At work I'm dipping my toes in managing project dependencies with maven. We use Apache Archiva (1.2.1) as a local repository and proxy. I'm adding artifact for open source project, that is not published on any public repository. I've learned that to publish the sources I should use the Classifier field on Upload artifact page. The sources are then listed alongside the jar and pom when I browse the repository. But when I update my maven dependencies I get only the jar and pom from the repository. I noticed that sources are also missing when the archiva proxies for me the downloads from other public repositories. I didn't find any configuration options in Archiva's admin pages to serve the sources... What am I missing? Update: I was missing the fact that artifact sources have to be downloaded manually. I.e. the maven client has to request them, which is controlled by command line option -DdownloadSources=true. Maven Integration for Eclipse has a preference setting to always download them as described in Resolving artifact sources. Archiva then serves the sources for local artifacts or proxies the request to remote repositories and caches the sources for future requests.

    Hi, we'd like to measure "client side web site performance". i.e. we would like to have answers to the following questions: how long did it takt to load and render a webpage (including alle graphics scripts etc.) this bundled with additional informations like user-agent, operating system etc. a graphical tool to analyze the data would be perfect I know jiffy ( http://code.google.com/p/jiffy-web/wiki/Jiffy_js ) but that isn't maintained anymore. I would prefer either a hosted solution (like google analytics) or a java based solution that we deploy for ourselves. Do you know something like that? Thanks, Marc

    Hi! I have a gcc project and would like to automatically add defines for build date and revision number (from git) to my sources. What's the best way to do this? My goal is simple to be able to do something like this on startup: printf("Test app build on %s, revision %d", BUILD_DATE, REVISION) For building I'm using make with a simple Makefile.inc, not autoconf ot anything like this.   • How do you find out release, mailing list statistics information on open source projects

    We are interested in finding out some statistics of various frameworks Mailing list activity on say richfaces. Much similar to what is available on http://code.google.com (Low, Medium, High) + average number of emails per day | per month. Number of releases made in a year including patch, minor, major releases. We did look at the maven repositories but that wasn't very useful either. We did look at ohloh, but didn't get the desired information. Any other ideas on where to get this information (any maven-2 plugins)?

  • Javascript source code analysis ( specifically duplication checking )

    Partial duplicate of this Notes: I already use JSLint extensively via a tool I wrote that scans in intervals my current project directory for recently updated/created .js files. It's drastically improved productivity for me and I doubt there is anything as good as JSLint for the price (it's free). That said, is there any analysis tool out there that can find repetitive or near-duplicate code blocks, the goal being to make it easier to find opportunities to consolidate large files or small/medium sized projects?

    If I wanted to learn about pattern recognition in general what would be a good place to start (recommend a book)? Also, does anybody have any experience/knowledge on how to go about applying these algorithms to find abstraction patterns in programs? (repeated code, chunks of code that do the same thing, but in slightly different ways, etc.) Thanks Edit: I don't mind mathematically intensive books. In fact, that would be a good thing.
