  • Assess BIOS on HP Pavilion xt966

    I'm attempting to change the boot device priority on a older HP. When it starts up it flashes a HP splash screen then just goes black with a blinking caret. I tried the suggestion of leaving it off for 5 sec then hitting F1. No dice. I'm using a USB keyboard. I might grab a PS2 and give it a go. Any other ideas?

I ran through the following steps: Download MySQL Community Server 5.5.8 Linux - Generic Compressed TAR Archive Unpack it, for example to: /home/martin/mysql Create a my.cnf file in your home directory. The file contents should be: [server] user=martin basedir=/home/martin/mysql datadir=/home/martin/sql_data socket=/home/martin/socket port=3666 Go to the /home/martin/mysql directory and execute: ./scripts/mysql_install_db --defaults-file=~/my.cnf --user=martin --basedir=/home/martin/mysql --datadir=/home/martin/sql_data --socket=/home/martin/socket Your MySQL server is ready. Start it with this command: ./bin/mysqld_safe --defaults-file=~/my.cnf & When I try to change the password of MySQL it gives the error: Cannot connect to mysql server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' How can I change this path and see whether the mysql.sock is created or not?

    I'm looking for an integrated solution that combines documentation of a software system with tracking of bugs, change requests and feature requests. Requirements: Documentation using a wiki would be nice, preferably one supporting CamelCase or other automatic linking. Issue tracking must allow a customizable workflow and optional e-mail notifications. Known alternatives: FogBugz is an awesome issue tracker, but the wiki appears to be somewhat awkward. Trac's wiki is average (though not as nice as Foswiki.org) but I don't know how good the integrated issue tracker is. What would you recommend? What systems offer the best combination of documentation and issue tracking?

    I am trying to run ssh command to another ip namespace. I can do it right now, but it runs as root. I want to run it as a normal user. I want to know if there is a way to enter a non-root shell in another network namespace. I know you can use this to enter a root shell in another namespace: sudo ip netns exec <namespace> bash Alternatively, is there a way to run single commands as a non-root user? I know you can run commands as root with this: sudo ip netns exec <namespace> <command>

  • Windows 7 won't recognize backup set can I script extracting the files in some other way?

    The Windows 7 Backup/Restore created multiple backup sets and I was able to restore the oldest version, but not the most recent, which is not seen by the application. I do see all of the zip files and there are hundreds in later versions. Is there a way to extract each of these correctly outside of the regular restoration method? Perhaps scripting an extract of each day one after another? further clarifying The backup files were all made to an external drive. The original computer died completely, power supply, drives everything. I am trying to reconstruct as much as possible and the only backup set recognized is 6 months older. This was recovered over a new install, but unzipping thousands of zip files is not really a simple unzip copy project as the original paths are not a simple thing to reconstruct.

  • How to tunnel a local port onto a remote server

    I have a domain that i bought from DynDNS. I pointed the domain at my ip adress so i can run servers. The problem I have is that I don't live near the server computer... Can I use an ssh tunnel? As I understand it, this will let me access to my servers. I want the remote computer to direct traffic from port 8080 over the ssh tunnel to the ssh client, being my laptop's port 80. Is this possible?   • Visual Studio 2012 Very Slow Typing

    I have a problem. After SP1 update, passing some time, VS 2012 becomes very-very slow when typing text. Solution size is not big, PC is quite powerful, it has 16GB of RAM, SSD drive, and i7-2600.   • local app opening instead of ssh forwarded app over x

    i have a custom install of ubuntu 9.10 - xorg intel and its deps, icewm, xde and swiftfox from the swiftfox repos. I'm trying to start a ssh forwarded session of swiftfox from another system - which has the plain vanilla firefox version in the repos- with ssh -x [ipaddress] and then starting swiftfox from command line. When i start it though, it opens up the local copy of firefox instead of the copy of swiftfox on the other box. I have NO idea what's wrong...swiftfox dosen't open on the remote box, i am definately on the remote boxes terminal, and there's no way whatsoever it should open a local copy. I'm wondering what's wrong

  • Windows Question: RunOnce/Second Boot Issues

    I am attempting to create a Windows XP SP3 image that will run my application on Second Boot. Here is the intended workflow. 1) Run Image Prep Utility (I wrote) on windows to add my runonce entries and clean a few things up. 2) Reboot to ghost, make image file. 3) Package into my ISO and distribute. 4) System will be imaged by user. 5) On first boot, I have about 5 things that run, one of which includes a driver updater (I wrote) for my own specific devices. 6) One of the entries inside of HKCU/../runonce is a reg file, which adds another key to HKLM/../runonce. This is how second boot is acquired. 7) As a result of the driver updater, user is prompted to reboot. 8) My application is then launched from HKLM/../runonce on second boot. This workflow works perfectly, except for a select few legacy systems that contain devices that cause the add hardware wizard to pop up. When the add hardware wizard pops up is when I begin to see problems. It's important to note, that if I manually inspect the registry after the add hardware wizard pops up, it appears as I would expect, with all the first boot scripts having run, and it's sitting in a state I would correctly expect it to be in for a second boot scenario. The problem comes when I click next on the add hardware wizard, it seems to re-run the single entry I've added, and re-executes the runonce scripts. (only one script now as it's already executed and cleared out the initial entries). This causes my application to open as if it were a second boot, only when next is clicked on the add hardware wizard. If I click cancel, and reboot, then it also works as expected. I don't care as much about other solutions, because I could design a system that doesn't fully rely on Microsoft's registry. I simply can't find any information as to WHY this is happening. I believe this is some type of Microsoft issue that's presenting itself as a result of an overstretched image that's expected to support too many legacy platforms, but any help that can be provided would be appreciated.   • Converting Future Composer FC14 tracker music to MIDI data

    I have an old .FC music file from the Amiga/C64 days. It was made using Future Composer. The first four bytes of the file read as FC14 in ASCII; I'm pretty sure that's the version number. I need to dump the channels and their notes into a standard MIDI file in order to play it through my MIDI devices. Is there a way to do this with existing programs? If not, are there any specifications available on the format of these files? I do not require the samples, and I am aware that they will be lost during the conversion process.

    I've read some articles here that suggest that we are able to retrieve Chrome's history as SQLite databases: Export history from chome browser How can I view "archived" Google Chrome history — i.e. history older than three months? I can't seem to find the folder where these are supposed to be located. In the first article, the provided path was ~/Library/Application\ Support/Google/Chrome/Default/History, but there is no such directory in my filesystem. I am using Chrome 26.0.1410.65 on Mac OS X Lion. And I am signed in with my Google account. Is there something similar to that but for Mac? Is there a way to find the folder where Chrome stores my history?

    We have Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers at work place. However we dont have Red Hat Linux desktops. So I used CentOS 5.4 to compile the Mono sources and generated the Mono framework for CentOS and tested with some sample codes and I am satisfied. I want to transfer this compiled framework to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. How Can I do that? Do I have to compile the Mono framework statically or do I have to copy the linked libraries as well? I am not familiar with linux much. Any help is highly appreciated.

  • How come the ls command prints in multiple columns on tty but only one column everywhere else?

    Even after using Unix-like OSes for a couple years, this behaviour still baffles me. When I use the ls command in a directory that has lots of files, the output is usually nicely formatted into multiple columns. Here's an example: $ ls a.txt C.txt f.txt H.txt k.txt M.txt p.txt R.txt u.txt W.txt z.txt A.txt d.txt F.txt i.txt K.txt n.txt P.txt s.txt U.txt x.txt Z.txt b.txt D.txt g.txt I.txt l.txt N.txt q.txt S.txt v.txt X.txt B.txt e.txt G.txt j.txt L.txt o.txt Q.txt t.txt V.txt y.txt c.txt E.txt h.txt J.txt m.txt O.txt r.txt T.txt w.txt Y.txt However, if I try to redirect the output to a file, or pipe it to another command, only a single column appears in the output. Using the same example directory as above, here's what I get when I pipe ls to wc: $ ls | wc 52 52 312 In other words, wc thinks there are 52 lines, even though the output to the terminal has only 5. I haven't observed this behaviour in any other command. Would you like to explain this to me?

  • How can I set up multiple dynamic users to update a single network's dynamic IP

    On my home network we are allocated a dynamic IP. I want to configure ddclient (or an equivalent) to send IP updates to DNS-O-Matic/OpenDNS only when I am on my home network. I do not want to send IP updates when I'm on my office network. Can this be done? I am prepared to use different FLOSS software or a different free DNS service. Additionally, there are multiple users who may be on the home network or away on other networks. How can we configure ddclient on each machine so that whoever is on the home network updates the IP (i.e. so we don't have to rely on a particular machine being on the network to update the IP). OpenDNS support have said we can't simply install updater software on each machine.

  • Any reason not to disable Windows kernel paging?

    So I'm planning on eventually going to 2 GB (mobo max) RAM from 1 GB, and I want to disable kernel paging once I do, because I've heard it can give a performance boost (and that I believe). Any reason not to do it or any general thoughts about it? Edit: for clarification, this is not disabling general RAM paging. This is disabling having kernel memory paged (or at least parts of it, as Charlls noted).

  • Vim is spellchecking in XML files where I don't want it to, and only there

    I'm trying to use Vim's builtin spellchecking in some XML documents. This happens merely by having the XML syntax loaded, as seen in the following minimalistic example (which reproduces what I also see in large XML documents): Note that given two buffers with exactly the same content, when Filetype is text, the spellchecking works; when it is xml, it does not. spell is set in both buffers. However, given this view of the top three lines of a large XML document, you can see that the spellchecking is certainly on: but it is only checking attributes. The nuisance is that none of the things it is actually finding are mispelled, and it isn't finding any of the numerous misspellings in the document. I would like it at a minimum to find the spelling errors in the body of the document, and being able to turn off the checking on attributes would be a nice option. I've searched for @NoSpell in the xml.vim file, but that returns no hits.

  • How to set resolution on mplayer with libcaca?

    I'm using mplayer and libcaca on Gentoo. My framebuffer (uvesafb) is running at 1920x1200 (I don't know how many characters that is) and mplayer has problems filling up the screen, so video and audio lose synchronization. I'm looking for ways to improve performance. The most obvious solution would be to decrease resolution of mplayer, so I'm looking for ways to do that. Any other performance tips would be appriciated.
