• NGinx Domain name redirects

  Lets say I have a website named xyz.co, I also have other domain names with the same prefix like xyz.com, xyz.it, xyz.co.it Right now nginx works fine with server_name xyz.co in nginx.conf in port 80 I would want all the other domains to redirect to xyz.co also I would want www.* versions of the above to redirect to xyz.co. How can I get this? Is this nginx webserver level changes? or I need to make this changes in DNS?

• Windows Home 7 and virtualization

  so apparently, you can't use VirtualBox etc with Windows Home 7. because you would be using two licenses instead of one. So other users that tried virtualization with Windows Home Premium 7, did you just end up using another OS like Ubuntu etc? Did you find a workaround for using Windows? When I say virtualization, I mean virtual machine of sort - where dangerous websites can be visited, nasty applications can be tried etc.

• Command history in zsh

  Currently I have zsh set up in such a way that command history is shared between all sessions immediately. Say I have a terminal emulator open with two tabs, each with a zsh session, A1 and A2. If I enter ls -la in A1, and then go to A2 and press up arrow key, I will see ls -la in the command prompt. I would like to change it so sessions don't share the command history with each other although when you start new session it gets all the previous history from all sessions before it.

  Similar to Concurrent FTP access. How is concurrent file access handled for NFS? Say that one client is updating/overwriting a file on a NFS server, and a process on the server is reading that same file directly from the file system at the same time. Is there some sort of atomic handling of file read/write in NFS/Linux or do I have to work with tmp files to ensure data consistency? I'm worried that the process reading the file will get corrupt data.

• How do I increase copy/paste buffer size in Linux

  Hi all, I'm trying to copy and paste lines of code to the linux terminal. However, I've noticed that when the copied text is too long (let's say, 60 or more lines), it gets trimmed and altered in an apparently random way (e.g. some characters missing). I found the same problem in Ubuntu Karmic Koala, Fedora 10 and Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope. Any clue why this happens and if I can increase the size of safely copy/pasteable text? Thanks!

• Sending a UDP message to a computer inside a network

  Say I have the ip and mac address of a computer inside a network and I wish to send him a UDP message. By initializing the mac and ip addresses of the sent message to the given, when the network router recives the message he should pass it to the computer with the same mac address...right? Im asking becuase a program I write dosent seem to handle this limitation. it works great when its on the same network, but otherwise ...nada. Thanks

• SQL Server 2000 -- Log Shipping reliability?

  I've been asked to look into log shipping for SQL Server 2000 (yes, 2000): something in my memory tells me that I looked at this years ago and there were question marks over it's reliability. I'm trying to google stuff, but given the age of 2000 now I've put pulled up anything to confirm this -- most seem to say they're using it without problem, so just want confirm whether I'm just being delusional, or whether there were problems, but with a fully patched SP4 box these don't exist any more. Our problem is one person can start downloading something and kill the network and every hour we download logs into our cluster but it floods the network unless we rate limit it. Ideally we want to be able to say: total: 35 mbps Hadoop Cluster (15 mbps) Phones (1 mbps) Office(25 people) (19mbps but no one machine can have more than 5mbps)

  I had to save data from my harddisk to an external drive (with linux) and after reinstalling Windows Vista (and copying the files back) there is a strange overlay icon with two people. How do I get rid of this ? First I thought it could be shared, but the files are not shared. The user is the owner of all those files and they are accesible to everyone.   Is it worthwhile running fail2ban, sshdfilter or similar tools, which blacklist IP addresses which attempt and fail to login? I've seen it argued that this is security theatre on a "properly secured" server. However, I feel that it probably makes script kiddies move on to the next server in their list. Let's say that my server is "properly secured" and I am not worried that a brute force attack will actually succeed - are these tools simply keeping my logfiles clean, or am I getting any worthwhile benefit in blocking brute force attack attempts?

• Is there a compression method for compressing a group of very similar files, without archiving them?

  I want to compress a large nuber of files that have near identical headers, and also some data, however I do not wish to archive them, nor do I wish to zip them individually(because the copression ratio would be much higher if substitutions of similar blocks could be done using a single table). Does a compression method exist to do this already, or should I implement it myself. Note: Don't say "Disk space is cheap", because I may want to use this on an embedded system.
