• Are there any tools for monitoring individual Apache virtual hosts in real-time?

  I'm looking for a way to monitor and record Apache traffic, separated by virtual host. I am currently using Munin to capture this and other data for the entire server however I can't seem to find a way to do this by vhost. This link describes using a module called mod_watch which is apparently no longer in development: http://www.freshnet.org/wordpress/2007/03/08/monitoring-apaches-virtualhost-with-munin/ The file that is listed as being compatible with Apache 2.x is reported to have problems with missing vhosts an reporting data correctly. Does anyone know of a reliable way to determine real-time traffic per vhost? If I can find this it should be easy enough to write a new Munin plugin.

  I've set up a WordPress multi-site with a wildcard ssl for example.com to access the admin area securely. However I'm also using domain mapping to map other domains to other sites e.g. alldogs.com to alldogs.example.com. The problem is when I'm trying to access the front end of a site from and admin for a mapped domain e.g. alldogs.com by clicking "Visit Site" the Link goes to https://alldogs.com because of the forced ssl applied to the admin area. Which produces a certificate warning since the certificate is for example.com and not alldogs.com. How can write a mod_rewrite rule to determine if the url/link clicked on is not the main domain e.g. example.com then change the https:// to http:// so the site can be accessed via port 80 and not generate a certificate warning for that mapped domains

  I am specially interested on if somebody is actually doing/maintaining an installer for Windows, as there are quite several issues when installing all dependencies, etc. (for example, there might be someone already doing a Installbuilder installer for it and am just not aware of the matter) If not, at least if someone got it working and has some key tip to share. • Pages partially load on rapid refresh

  I recently set up a VPS slice with 256MB to run a LAMP stack (Ubuntu 11.04, Apache2, Mysql, PHP5). So far I'm only running a simple Wordpress site on an IP-based virtual host I set up. The performance is excellent, but I've noticed that if I send multiple HTTP requests from the same IP in a short time period, only partial pages are rendered. Then if I wait a bit and refresh the page, the entire page loads again. I noticed this behaviour when accessing the site from two browsers from my office desktop, but it also presents itself if I quickly navigate the site from a single browser (any browser). I'm guessing this is an Apache phenomenon, as the pages are rendered correctly except under the conditions above, but perhaps I'm wrong here. Could it be my hosting company with some kind of DOS protection in place? As a relative Linux/server noob, I'd really appreciate any insight into what settings in Apache could explain this behaviour, and how I might go about changing it.

• Why S3 website redirect location is not followed by CloudFront?

  I have a website hosted on Amazon S3. It is the new version of an old website hosted on WordPress. I have set up some files with the metadata Website Redirect Locationto handle old location and redirect them to the new website pages. For example: I had http://www.mysite.com/solution that I want to redirect to http://mysite.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/product.html So I created an empty file named solutioninside my bucket with the correct metadata: Website Redirect Location= /product.html The S3 redirect metadata is equivalent to a 301 Moved Permanentlythat is great for SEO. This works great when accessing the URL directly from S3 domain. I have also set up a CloudFront distribution based on the website bucket. And when I try to access through my distribution, the redirect does not work, ie: http://xxxx123.cloudfront.net/solution does not redirect but download the empty file instead. So my question is how to keep the redirection through the CloudFront distribution ? Or any idea on how to handle the redirection without deteriorate SEO ? Thanks

  I'm setting up an environment for wordpress on apache2, on a fresh install of ubuntu 12.04. In order to get friendly URLS working, I'm trying to set up mod_rewrite. I followed some instructions I found on the net, and used a2enmod. Now. after restarting apache, I'd like to check if the module is actually loaded. The command that I've found for getting a list of loaded modules is this: apache2 -t -D DUMP_MODULES However, this returns an error: apache2: bad user name ${APACHE_RUN_USER} So, how do I actually list all loaded modules, or otherwise check to see if mod_rewrite has been enabled?

• Slow performance with WAMP localhost access from other devices

  I setup a localhost WAMP server and other device can access my localhost site on my win8 laptop with computer name instead of IP (bc I have use DCIP so that the wireless router can assign me IP otherwise it will not work). However, problem is that the website (WordPress), access speed is extremely slow on other devices other than my localhost computer, usually a 3s task take at least 10 seconds. (i.e. view my localhost site with computer name in a phone within the same wireless network.) Is that normal? What could be the reason causing it? Thank You

  I am working on email server, since i tried several times to create email server on ubuntu12.04LTS with postfix + dovecote + postfixadmin + courier + clamav + spamassassin. But everytime i install these packages i face new problems, like mails send to localhost users and found in users maildir. But I can't determine how to configure/setup for send an email to external smtp like gmail, yahoo. The most worst thing i can't determine how to use sasl, because i am not using SSL so it is not worthy for my domain.   I've got a server that receives around a million unique visitors a month and I've recently began using Plesk to help monitor some of the vitals on the box itself. RAM I can make sense of, but I'm not really sure if my CPU usage is too high, low, or about average for this number of visitors. The server exists solely to serve up a somewhat hefty WordPress blog.   I have recently taken over management of a server running centos and whm. It has several websites and domains running under reseller accounts. Email has always been on a server at our actual office. I have recently changed our email from our local email server to gapps for business (our local email server was pretty archaic). However, when any email is sent from the web server (such as wordpress etc) to our domain - it still routes it to the IP of our old email server. I am not very familiar with WHM or exim so don't really know how to address this. Email to other domains works fine and the gapps is working perfectly. Any help is much appreciated.

• Commercial template (theme) sellers which give license to resell the template?

  I came once across a website template seller which granted rights to resell the template to the buyer but forgot to bookmark it. All the commercial template vendors I know of (Template Monster, BoxedArt, Dreamtemplate..etc) don't allow this. Anyone knows of any sellers which allow this? Some of them allow you to resell the template if it's packaged for a different host software. For example, if I buy a website template, I am allowed to sell it as a WordPress or Joomla or Drupal theme. I am aware of public domain and free templates sites but I am not looking for those. I am talking about templates which are being sold.

• VPS stops responding every now and again

  I have a Linode vps that I use to host some of my websites on. It's Ubuntu based and it's up to date in terms of all packages. I don't have any cron jobs scheduled or any automatic processes. I host a few (up to date) wordpress blogs there that have very little traffic altogether. Every day (at a different time) my server stops responding, I can't SSH to it, web access is getting timed out and it just dies until I reboot it through the Linode manager. On the linode dashboard I can see that the CPU is not very high (2-3%) Incoming/Outgoing traffic is on 0 and the IO count has a spike just before the server stops responding (SWAP IO is at 2k and IO Rate is at 5k). When I reboot the server everything is just fine. I'm trying to figure out a way to analyze what's going on at these random times where the server freezes up. How can I determine the problem?

• php returns junk characters at end of everything

  php appears to be adding junk characters to the end of everything it returns on a friend's site. I'm not an admin on the server but I'd like to give an informed complaint to get this fixed. The site is http://daytoncodebreakers.org. You can see some junk at the end of every page on the site (what appear to be question marks with something else in the middle). I originally thought this was a wordpress issue, but check out http://daytoncodebreakers.org/whereisini.php (which is just a call to phpinfo), and http://daytoncodebreakers.org/hello.php (which is just 'Hello World'). I'm not sure if this is the most appropriate site, but I think this is a server config issue, so I'm posting it here (rather than stackoverflow or superuser). Feel free to move it if want.

• I use windows7 and am looking for a tool to help me tag/organize my bookmarks as well as my thoughts and projects.

  I've got my bookmarks in Chrome currently, and am prone to just bookmarking something if it contains any info I may need for the project I'm currently working on. I had found a way to tag them with delicious and then get an export from that into a wordpress test server (with the tags), having a post for each bookmark, but this proved to be a bit of a waste of time, as there's no way to organize it well. Ideally I'd like to find some sort of mind-mapper with a Prezi-like view, that does auto tagging, excerpting and allows me to notate things effectively. Does my dream tool even exist? I've usually got 20+ tags open all at once because there may be something open on each I need to see/know to make my current project work. It's frustrating. Though I'm on Win7, I'm interested to hear about any tools that are out there that work to take your existing bookmarks and help you organize them productively.

• Is there any way to automatically prevent running out of memory?

  I am often running out of memory on my VPS ubuntu server. I wish there was a way to simply restart apache2 when it starts running out of memory, as that seems to solve the problem. Or am I just too lazy to fix the problem? I do have limited memory on the server... Okay, more information: I'm running apache2 prefork, here are my memory settings (i've been tweaking them...): StartServers 3 MinSpareServers 1 MaxSpareServers 5 MaxClients 150 MaxRequestsPerChild 1000 The VPS has 1 GB of ram, running ubuntu 11.04 32-bit. As for scripts, I have a wordpress network with 5 blogs, an install of AskBot (a python/django stackexchange clone), and an install of MediaWiki that isn't really used. There is also a homebrewed mp3 script that accesses the getid3 library to display information on lists of podcasts, and it seems to be throwing some php errors, not sure if that's the culprit...

• Controlling access to my API using SSH public key (not SSL)

  I have the challenge of implementing an API to be consumed by relatively non-technical clients -- pasting some sample code into their WordPress or homegrown PHP site is probably as much as we can ask. Asking them to install SSL on their servers ain't happening. So I am seeking a simple yet secure way to authenticate API clients. OAuth is the obvious solution, but I don't think it passes the "simple" test. Adding a client id and hashed secret as a parameter to the requests is closer -- it's not hard to do md5($secret . $client_id) or whatever the php would be. It seems to me that if client requests could use the same approach as SSH public keys (client gives us a key from their server(s) there should be some existing magic to make all of the subsequent transactions transparently work just as regular HTTP API requests. I am still working this out (obviously :-), so if I am being an idiot, it would be nice to know why. Thanks!

• Different color prompts for different machines when using terminal/ssh?

  Hi, I have 5 machines I constantly ssh into to do work. Its getting increasingly frustrating when I am issuing wrong commands on wrong boxes. Luckily I havent done anything bad yet. I wanted to know if there is any hack which I can hardcode which will display my prompt in different colors based on the machine I am ssh into? Such as blue for desktop1, purple for laptop, red for server etc? Is this possible? Currently I am using this command export PS1="\e[0;31m[\u@\h \W]\$ \e[m " taken from here http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/bash-shell-change-the-color-of-my-shell-prompt-under-linux-or-unix/ but it obviously doesnt work across ssh. Also, if you have any other cool bash tips for helping me ease my sight will be wonderful.
