  • application packaging

    The application packaging (software deliverables) is a vague concept to me. I worked in web application before so all I know how to prepare the deliverables ie WAR and then put them into the servlet container and rest of this being taken care of. But when considering other java or c++-based application (.exe or .class) how to prepare the package? What should be considered for preparation of the package and deployment of the application? Like I understand there should be some entries made into the windows registry or some libraries to be put in /usr/bin directory and so on. And during the development phase the execution and testing is done in more informal manner like writing some shell script or so on. But the deployment scenario is a more formal thing. As I said I have only the idea of deploying web applications I am not much knowledgeable in the other areas. Are there any kind of conventions like there are conventions for documentations like javadoc or doxygen/man pages? Application packaging is not that sort of a thing that there are much discussion on books or online materials. This is very disappointing.

  • Windows Server TCP Client application in c# Stops working after a while

    I am developping an application in C# Net framework 2.0. It is basicly a service application with a tcp client class. Class for Tcp Client Part public TelnetConnection(string Hostname, int Port) { host = Hostname; prt = Port; try { tcpSocket = new TcpClient(Hostname, Port); } catch (Exception e) { //Console.WriteLine(e.Message); } } The application is connecting to the server and revieves update's and more information. It works for about 20 minutes then stops recieving information from the server. -- Server side Client is still connected and the client side its still connected but stops receiving information from the server.   • Third party Application's Idle Session expiry

    We have a third party application running. It shows login dialog when idle for 20 minutes. We need to prevent the application to display login screen. We do not have any idea how idle state is handled internally in that application. We have done the follwoing with no luck. Created an small application in c# which focus it after every 5 minutes (using SetForegroundWindow()) and send a BM_CLICK message to one of its child window. Does not work. focus it after every 5 minutes (using SetForegroundWindow()) and move the cursor few pixels then restore cursor at its previous position. This does not work too! Is there any other way to achieve the goal?

I am wondering how big application/ platform break down there application in to multiple module and how they able to manage modules dependencies. For example in some E-commerce application they tend to break down it in various modules like pricing,promotions,shipping.import/export and many more. when we develop those application we hardly think about the underlying modules and how they have been designed to provides functionalists. Most of those module are not web-applications but are standalone module and not deployed in the web-app as jar files. can any one help me to understand how they break up things or is there any standard way to do this.any help/resources to get insight will really be helpful

  • Restoring and passing data to an already running instance of a .NET application

    The goal is to have an application that runs in the system tray and can either accept user input from its actual GUI (which isn't the actual issue) OR accept command line parameters (that would actually be done via a context menu in windows explorer). Now, while I'm aware that the command line parameters are not exactly possible once the application has started, I need a way to pass data to the already running application instance via some form of handler. I'm thinking maybe define and raise some sort of event? Thanks in advance.

    Can anyone recommend a good book on Javascript module/application development. I'm a Software Engineer, so I don't need all the intro to programming stuff. What I'm really looking for is: How do you bundle the html/css/javascript together so that you can make one include that will load the whole application. I.e.: <div id="myapplication"></div> ... ... <script src="myapplication.js"> Design patterns are always welcome. I've already read Javascript the good parts, and online guides, but it's hard to find a comprehensive guide/tutorial for specifically this. There's a lot of good "this is a javascript application" and "this is a scalable framework", but I haven't had any luck with "This is how you build a javascript application, including the html and css, and this is how you deliver it nicely". I'm building a small application to start, so I'm not interested in scalability and large-scale development practices, just a nice and comprehensive guide to get me off the ground.

Customers using the MPL should migrate to Oracle Service Bus. ·         No provided Crystal Reports/Business Objects Interface – Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.2.0.0.0 or above does not ship with a supported Crystal Reports/Business Objects Interface. This facility is now available as downloadable customization for existing or new customers. Responsibility for maintenance and new features is now individual customer's responsibility. ·         XAI Servlet deprecation – The XAI Servlet (xaiserver and classicxai) will be removed in the next release of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework.   • Pet Store Loyalty Programs: I'm Not Loyal Yet!

    After two years of constantly being asked (aka "pestered) by my now eight-year-old daughter for a dog (or any pet that is more interactive than a goldfish), I've finally compromised with a hamster purely by chance. Friends of ours had recently brought home a female hamster, and (surprise, surprise) two weeks later, they were looking for homes for 11 baby hamster pups. Since the pups were not yet ready to be weaned from their mother, my daughter and I had several weeks to get ready -- and we spent that extra time visiting a number of local pet stores and purchasing an assortment of hamster books, toys, exercise equipment, food, bedding, and cage -- not cheap! Now, I'm usually an online shopper (i.e. I love reading user reviews and comparing prices), but for kids, there is absolutely no online substitute for actually walking into a store and physically picking out something you want. We have two competing pet shops within close proximity to where we live, and I signed up for their rewards programs to get discounts on select items. I'm sure it takes a while to get my data into the system (after all, I did fill out a form the old-fashioned way), but as it has been more than two weeks for one store and over a week for the other, the window of opportunity is getting smaller as we by now pretty much have most of what we think we need. Everything I've purchased has been purely hamster or small animal related, so in an ideal world, the stores would have me easily figured out as a hamster owner. Here is what I would be expecting of a loyalty rewards program: Point me to some useful links, either information provied by the company or external websites where I can learn more. Any value-add a business can provide to make my life easier makes me a much more loyal customer. What things can I expect as a new pet owner? Any hamster communities? Any hamster-related events? Any vets that specialize in small animals in the vicinity? Send me an email with other related products I may be interested in. Upsell and cross-sell to me. We've go the basics and a couple of luxuries, but at this point, I'm pretty excited (surprisingly) about the hamster, and my daughter is footing the bill with her birthday and Christmas money. She and I would be more than happy to spend her money! Get this information to me faster. As I mentioned, my window of opportunity is getting smaller, as eithe rmy daughter's money will run out on other things or we'll start losing the thrill of buying new hamster toys and treats. I realize this is easier said than done, and undoubtedly, the stores are getting value knowing my basic customer information and purchase history. Buth, they could really benefit by delivering a loyalty program that really earned my loyalty. "Goldeen" needs a new water bottle, yogurt chips, and chew toys as he doesn't seem to like the ones we bought. So for now, I'll just go to whichever store is the most convenient.   • Got an idea for an application, but part of it is patented, any suggestions?

    Hi there, so I've been working on developing an idea for an application that I think has the potential to be successful, however after some initial research I've discovered that at least part of my ideas are covered by a patent out there, the patent in particular is held by a really large company (I don't want to give away specifics for fear I'd draw their attention for sure). I'm debating a few options: 1) Develop patents around my ideas that don't conflict and maybe approach the company in question for a license exchange 2) Just approach them for a license outright 3) Just develop around it anyways and hope for the best :-p What have other people done in these situations? Are companies generally willing to grant patent licenses? Are they willing to grant them at reasonable prices? Thoughts?

  • Working with Tile Notifications in Windows 8 Store Apps – Part I

    One of the features that really makes Windows 8 apps stand out from others is the tile functionality on the start screen. While icons allow a user to start an application, tiles provide a more engaging way to engage the user and draw them into an application. Examples of “live” tiles on part of my current start screen are shown next: I’ll admit that if you get enough of these tiles going the start screen can actually be a bit distracting. Fortunately, a user can easily disable a live tile by right-clicking on it or pressing and holding a tile on a touch device and then selecting Turn live tile off from the AppBar: The can also make a wide tile smaller (into a square tile) or make a square tile bigger assuming the application supports both squares and rectangles. In this post I’ll walk through how to add tile notification functionality into an application. Both XAML/C# and HTML/JavaScript apps support live tiles and I’ll show the code for both options.   Understanding Tile Templates The first thing you need to know if you want to add custom tile functionality (live tiles) into your application is that there is a collection of tile templates available out-of-the-box. Each tile template has XML associated with it that you need to load, update with your custom data, and then feed into a tile update manager. By doing that you can control what shows in your app’s tile on the Windows 8 start screen. So how do you learn more about the different tile templates and their respective XML? Fortunately, Microsoft has a nice documentation page in the Windows 8 Store SDK. Visit http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/hh761491.aspx to see a complete list of square and wide/rectangular tile templates that you can use. Looking through the templates you’ll It has the following XML template associated with it:  <tile> <visual> <binding template="TileSquareBlock"> <text id="1">Text Field 1</text> <text id="2">Text Field 2</text> </binding> </visual> </tile> An example of a wide/rectangular tile template is shown next:    <tile> <visual> <binding template="TileWideImageAndText01"> <image id="1" src="image1.png" alt="alt text"/> <text id="1">Text Field 1</text> </binding> </visual> </tile>   To use these tile templates (or others you find interesting), update their content, and get them to show for your app’s tile on the Windows 8 start screen you’ll need to perform the following steps: Define the tile template to use in your app Load the tile template’s XML into memory Modify the children of the <binding> tag Feed the modified tile XML into a new TileNotification instance Feed the TileNotification instance into the Update() method of the TileUpdateManager In the remainder of the post I’ll walk through each of the steps listed above to provide wide and square tile notifications for an application. The wide tile that’s shown will show an image and text while the square tile will only show text. If you’re going to provide custom tile notifications it’s recommended that you provide wide and square tiles since users can switch between the two of them directly on the start screen. Note: When working with tile notifications it’s possible to manipulate and update a tile’s XML template without having to know XML parsing techniques. This can be accomplished using some C# notification extension classes that are available. In this post I’m going to focus on working with tile notifications using an XML parser so that the focus is on the steps required to add notifications to the Windows 8 start screen rather than on external extension classes. You can access the extension classes in the Windows 8 samples gallery if you’re interested.   Steps to Create Custom App Tile Notifications   Step 1: Define the tile template to use in your app Although you can cut-and-paste a tile template’s XML directly into your C# or HTML/JavaScript Windows store app and then parse it using an XML parser, it’s easier to use the built-in TileTemplateType enumeration from the Windows.UI.Notifications namespace.   • Can it be useful to build an application starting with the GUI?

    The trend in application design and development seems to be starting with the "guts": the domain, then data access, then infrastructure, etc. The GUI seems to usually come later in the process. I wonder if it could ever be useful to build the GUI first... My rationale is that by building at least a prototype GUI, you gain a better idea of what needs to happen behind the scenes, and so are in a better position to start work on the domain and supporting code. I can see an issue with this practice in that if the supporting code is not yet written, there won't be much for the GUI layer to actually do. Perhaps building mock objects or throwaway classes (somewhat like is done in unit testing) would provide just enough of a foundation to build the GUI on initially. Might this be a feasible idea for a real project? Maybe we could add GDD (GUI Driven Development) to the acronym stable...
