• jQuery global variable best practice & options?

  Currently I am working on a legacy web page that uses a ton of javascript, jquery, microsoft client javascript, and other libraries. The bottom line - I cannot rewrite the entire page from scratch as the business cannot justify it. So... it is what it is. Anyway, I need to pollute (I really tried not too) the global namespace with a variable. There are the three options I was thinking - Just store/retrieve it using a normal javascript declaration - var x = 0; Utilize jQuery to store/retrieve the value in a DOM tag - $("body").data("x", 0); Utilize a hidden form field, and set/retrieve the value with jQuery - $("whatever").data("x", 0); What does everyone think? Is there a better way? I looked at the existing pile of code and I do not believe the variable can be scoped in a function.

• GWT MVP with a table

  When working with MVP in GWT how would you work with a table? For example if you had a table of users does your view look like this? public interface MyDisplay{ HasValue<User> users(); } or would it be more like this? public interface MyDisplay{ HasValue<TableRow> rows(); } MVP makes a ton of sense until you start dealing with widgets that need to display lists of non-primitive data. I do not know how to switch the language to english, but here is a translation: Translation: Message 5075, Layer 16, Status 1, Row 1 The 'column' object 'CustomPollerAssignment.PollerID' depends on 'Database sorting. The database sorting cannot be changed if a schema bound object depends on it. Remove the dependency of the database sortieren and retry. I got a ton more of the errors like that.

• Aero Glass Buttons Like Windows Media Player?

  Hi everybody, I am making making a program and I want to have a Aero Glass set of controls just like Windows Media Player, I found this: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tims/archive/2006/04/18/578637.aspx but it just draws black. I also found a control that had the media player controls built in right ton the glass but it was no good it didn't want to render right and made different parts of my program not work. Any controls, or ways to extend the Aero glass so I can at least add my own buttons would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :) BTW C# only. :)

  Hi, I was trying to find a user friendly mime parser for java that could just get rid of all that message part parsing a user have to do. see this for more info about my requirement. Until now i have not been able to find one, so i think i need to write one for myself, that should be robust enough to handle all kind of emails. (I know this is not going to be easy.) Since there are a ton of email RFC's , can somebody guide me in the right direction from where should i start.

• What is the best way to manage one's session variables?

  In my .NET web app, I keep basic user info in a user session object. I also usually keep a director class in the session; which is basically just has info about whatever thing it being worked on on that screen (like a customer id). I am trying to keep from adding a ton of sessions. I also want to make sure at any given time ONLY the sessions that are necessary are in memory. This means I need an effective way of managing my session variables. Any suggestions?

• Uploadify refuses to upload WMV, FLV and MP4 files - SOLVED

  The uploadify plugin for JQuery seems very good and works for most file types. However, it allows me to upload all file types apart from the ones I need! Namely .WMV, .FLV and .MP4 Uploads of any other type work. I have already tried changing the fileExt parameter and also tried removing it altogether. I have testing in Google Chrome, IE7 and Firefox and none work for these file types. I have a ton of local projects already and uploading is not an issue on any other project, I even use the same example files (This is the first time I have used Uploadify) Is there a known reason for this behaviour? EDIT: Have found the issue. I had forgotten to add my usual .htaccess file to the example project.

• Entity framework error: The conversion of a datetime2 data type to a datetime data

  I know there are a ton of posts about this issue but none of them seem to solve my problem. Here's the scenario: I have a CreateDate DateTime column in my MS SQL Server database User table that is non-nullable and is automatically set using GetDate() method in "Default Value or Binding" setting. I am able to create a User just fine with the standard EF Insert but when I try to update the user, I get this error: The conversion of a datetime2 data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range value. What is the trick to not having the EF worry about the CreateDate column for updates? I have the StoreGenerationPattern = Identity but that isn't helping.   Hi all I have the following string "3/4Ton". I want to split it as -- word[1] = 3/4 and word[2] = Ton. Right now my piece of code looks like this:- Pattern p = Pattern.compile("[A-Z]{1}[a-z]+"); Matcher m = p.matcher(line); while(m.find()){ System.out.println("The word --> "+m.group()); } It carries out the needed task of splitting the string based on capital letters like:- String = MachineryInput word[1] = Machinery , word[2] = Input The only problem is it does not preserve, numbers or abbreviations or sequences of capital letters which are not meant to be separate words. Could some one help me out with my regular expression coding problem. Thanks in advance...

I have used various email scripts (dynaform,phpmailer, etc), and have experienced a ton of problems. So here is the site I am working on: Contact On the Right. It is very basic: no validation, no required fields. I simply need anything that is entered to be sent back to me. • C# switch: case not falling through to other cases limitation

  This question is kind of an add-on to this question In C#, a switch case cannot fall through to other cases, this causes a compilation error. In this case I am just adding some number to the month total for the selected month and each subsequent month thereafter. (simple example, not meant to be real) switch (month) { case 0: add something to month totals case 1: add something to month totals case 2: add something to month totals default: break; } Is there a logical alternative to this in C# without having to write out a ton of if statements? if (month <= 0) add something to month if (month <= 1) add something to month if (month <= 2) add something to month .... etc

• Best language to learn complementing java

  Hi all, I'm a somewhat experienced java ee developer, and I wish to complement my background by learning a newish language. I'm recently out of school where I did a ton of scientific computing and some functional programming, so I'm pretty comfortable with those families of languages. If at all possible, I'd like to pick a language with some market value, though I know this is tough to gauge. After snooping around a bit, the consensus seems to be one of Python/Ruby/Perl; how would each of these work with java in a web application environment, and in your opinion which complements it best? Any other suggestions for languages would also be welcome.

• Did test server port change in Rails 2.3?

  I upgraded rails to 2.3.2 from 2.1.1 yesterday and a bunch of my tests started failing. When I was running under 2.1.1, the test server was running on port 3000 so I had a HOST_DOMAIN variable that included the port - HOST_DOMAIN = "localhost.tst:3000". This is so my assert_redirected_to's would succeed. Now, however, it seems that the test server is running on port 80, so the port in HOST_DOMAIN is causing tests to fail. There's no specific reason I'm keeping the port in HOST_DOMAIN. I more want to know whether something in Rails 2.3 changed the port the test server runs on and where I can read more about why. I've searched a ton and can't find anything, so I'm going to my go-to place to ask development questions :) Thanks in advance.

• Xcode 4.2 how include one project into another one?

  I keep searching, but cannot find a clear and simple explanation on how to include one XCode project, along with all of it's sub-classes into another project. I routinely see stuff like that in sample projects that I download off the web, but do not know how to do this myself. Within XCode, along with .h and .m files, and folders, there's a whole new project, starting with a blue xcode project icon, that is expandable to contain everything within the project. Please, can someone explain to me step by step what do I need to do to add one XCode project into another one? I've seen a ton of one liners like "header search paths", but that does not tell me much. UPDATE: After re-reading the documentation, I realized that the project to include must be dragged ONTO the BLUE project icon of the parent project. Regular sources can be dragged anywhere, but a project must be dragged onto a project. Thank you!

• Have you been in cases where TDD increased development time?

  Hello everyone :) I was reading http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2512504/tdd-how-to-start-really-thinking-tdd and I noticed many of the answers indicate that tests + application should take less time than just writing the application. In my experience, this is not true. My problem though is that some 90% of the code I write has a TON of operating system calls. The time spent to actually mock these up takes much longer than just writing the code in the first place. Sometimes 4 or 5 times as long to write the test as to write the actual code. I'm curious if there are other developers in this kind of a scenario.

• Removing $_SESSION['layout']['action'] globally from all users!

  Ok, I am storing a session variable like so to load up users layouts faster if it's set instead of calling the database. But since the layout can be changed via the Administrator, I'd like to be able to globally remove all sessions where $_SESSION['layout']['action'] is set for all users. $_SESSION['layout']['action'] = array(a ton of indexes and mulit-dimensional arrays); Now, I know it's being stored into my database sessions table, there's a column for session_id, last_update, and data. So, question I have is how to remove that session array key ['action'] from all users. Using $_SESSION = array(); session_destroy(); Does not work. Basically, session_start() is being loaded on every page load, so I just want to remove all ['action'] keys from ['layout']. Is this possible to do? Thanks

• How to structure controller to sort multiple criteria asp.net mvc

  Hi, What's the best way to set up a controller to sort by many (possibly null) criteria? Say for example, I was building a site that sold cars. My CarController has a function Index() which returns an IList of cars to the view, and details on each car are rendered with a partial view. What's the best way to structure this? Especially if there are a lot of criteria: Car Type (aka SUV), Car Brand, Car Model, Car Year, Car Price, Car Color, bool IsNew, or if I want to sort by closest to me etc... I'm using NHibernate as my ORM. Should I have just a ton of possible NHibernate queries and figure out which one to choose based on if/then's in the controller? Or is there a simpler way. • Best way to handle SQL Server fulltext index updates

  Hi all, I have a fulltext index which doesn't need to be immediately up-to-date, I'd like to spare myself the I/O (when I do bulk updates, I see a ton of I/O related to the index) and do the index updates during low usage times (nightly, perhaps even weekly). It seems there are two ways to go about this: Turn off change tracking (SET CHANGE_TRACKING OFF) and add a timestamp field to the indexed table, so that you can run alter fulltext index on <table> start INCREMENTAL population, or Enable change tracking, but set it to MANUAL, so that you can run alter fulltext index on <table> start UPDATE population when you need it updated. Is there a preferred method? I couldn't tell from this overview if there was a performance benefit one way or the other. Tom

• Why does TabStop stop working??

  I have a project that uses a series of auto-generated user control instances. The user-control itself exists, but I populate a panel with a series of these user controls, one for each item in my collection. Each user control displays a ton of information, but only ONE text field is editable. All of the other fields have TabStop set to false, and are marked as ReadOnly. The tab order of each user control is set at the time it is created so that the tab-key goes from one field to the next (or ... it's supposed to). When I have TWO fields on my user control whose TabStop is set to true, everything works great. But if I only have ONE field whose TabStop is true, the tab key stops working, and I have to physically CLICK on the next user control for it to gain focus. What's up? Has anyone else seen this behavior? Am I doing something stupid as usual?

• Multipart question: Mapping between xml and Json using xpath

  This is a JSON mapping question from a json newbie. Currently i'm reading xml using xpath in C#, and the xpath are returning either the element or attribute node values, as is the schema's want. I want to write out some of the returned values into a json formatted file. I know i can faneigle the xpath expression to return the element or attribute names, so I can built the appropriate name/value json structure before serialization, but I was I'm wondering if their was some way of doing a mapping between the xml and json. The xml schema is fairly big, so potentially the mapping will be big, meaning a ton of cumbersom coding to make it work. Is their any way to automap somehow? I was planning to use json.net, which seems flexible enough, although their may be a better approach. Any help would be appreciated. Bob.

• MS SQL: Mitigating schema changes/upgrades

  I haven't spent a ton of time researching this yet, mostly looking for best practices on upgrading/changing DB schemas. We're actively developing a new product and as such we often have additions or changes to our DB schema. We also have many copies of the DB -- one for the test environment, one for the prod environment, dev environments, you name it. We don't really want to have to blow away test data every time we want to make a change to the DB. s Are there good ways of automating this or handling this? • How do you use kate? Tips/Tricks/Workflow

  We all seen a bunch of these? Mostly for IDE's but also for vim and emacs. Kate is (only) a text editor (an awesome one) but it has a ton of options plus a number of plugins, so its hard to know all of it well. How do use the Kate text editor? Please share your workflow and help me and others learn some of the cool tricks you use. I'll start I use the built in terminal a lot opening files quickly, and using it as an enhanced haskell repl with ghci (since ghci doesn't allow you all to just put in all kinds of haskell code). Also use split views to quickly compare files (especially different versions of the same file). Also the auto-complete maybe simple(more use for saving typing time then remembering functions) but it works really well for that. Also if You highlight something and hit a start [/{/( it puts it in between brackets rather then replacing it with a bracket(why the hell do a lot of IDEs not have this feature).

• IoC from start to finish

  I'm quite sure that IoC is the way to go for my application. There are a ton of articles and even questions here on SO that discuss the different containers. I've read several blogs today with partial examples. I am personally leaning towards starting with the CommonServiceLocator and Unity as two way to solve the same problem -- I just need a bunch of assemblies to get data from a database, which I assume is what needs to be injected everywhere. I've yet to find any sites that really take a problem from beginning to end, with concrete code examples. For example, I've yet to find one that discusses an IServiceLocator and how to actually register it (or do whatever is required to make it known). What are your favorite posts / articles / SO questions that can take a noob from start to finish with the implementation?

• How do I set up the Clojure classpath in Emacs after installing with ELPA?

  I'm trying to add paths to my classpath in the Clojure REPL that I've set up in Emacs using ELPA. Apparently, this isn't the $CLASSPATH environment variable, but rather the swank-clojure-classpath variable that Swank sets up. Because I used ELPA to install Swank, Clojure, etc., there are a ton of .el files that take care of everything instead of my .emacs file. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to change the classpath now. I've tried using (setq 'swank-clojure-extra-classpaths (list ...)) both before and after the ELPA stuff in my .emacs, and I've tried adding paths directly to swank-clojure-classpath in .emacs, .emacs.d/init.el, and .emacs.d/user/user.el, but nothing works. What I'm ultimately trying to do is to add both the current directory "." and the directory in which I keep my Clojure programs. I'm assuming swank-clojure-classpath is the thing I need to set here.
