    In 1993, Douglas Adams–of The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy fame–lent his creative talent and voice to explaining the invention of the Ebook. The audio segment was produced almost 20 years ago by Adams to both promote his own work in digital format and the work of early ebook publisher Voyager Expanded Books. You may notice Adams refers to their product as a PowerBook, a name they kept until they heard Apple would be releasing a laptop with the same name (from then on the product was simply referred to as Expanded Books). The thoroughly modern video accompanying Adams concise and entertaining description of book history is an animation courtesy of U.K. designer Gavin Edwards, which he submitted to a contest hosted by The Literary Platform intended to match a clever animation with Adam’s monologue.     Telerik Reporting provides a simple, yet powerful, component called the ReportBook that allows multiple reports to be combined into one. Doing so makes displaying, printing, and exporting multiple reports a much simpler task for end users. Providing this type of functionality does leave one question though, "How are report parameters handled?" This entry will focus on providing the answers to that simple question.     Hi, does anyone know if there will be a Wrox Box 4? I would love to get something like that, but the latest collection of Wrox books seems to be the release for 3.5. I really need to get up to date with the latest version of .NET. I'm not sure if there will be a Wrox Box 4 though, because it looks like Wiley is now publishing Wrox books under Wiley, and not Wrox anymore. So it looks like I'm going to have to go with Professional ASP.NET 4 in C# Instead of the Wrox Box 3.5

    There are lots of books about programming out there, and it seems Code Complete is pretty much at the top of most people's list of "must-read programming books", but what about The Art of Computer Programming by Donald Knuth? I'm a busy person, between work and a young family I don't have a ton of free time, so I have to be picky about how I use it. I'm wondering - has anybody here read 'TAOCP'? If so, is it worth making time to read or would some other book or more on-the-side programming like pet projects or contributing to open source be a better use of my time in terms of professional development? DISCLAIMER - For those of you who sport "Knuth is my homeboy" t-shirts, don't get me wrong - I want to read it, but I'm just wondering if it should be right at the top of my priority list or if something else should come first.

    I am a second year student of Computer Games Technology. I recently finished my first prototype of my "kind" of own pathfinder (that doesn't use A* instead a geometrical approach/pattern recognition, the pathfinder just needs the knowledge about the terrain that is in his view to make decisions, because I wanted an AI that could actually explore, if the terrain is already known, then it will walk the shortest way easily, because the pathfinder has a memory of nodes). Anyway my question is more general: How do I start optimizing algorithms/loops/for_each/etc. using Assembly, although general tips are welcome. I am specifically looking for good books, because it is really hard to find good books on this topic. There are some small articles out there like this one, but still isn't enough knowledge to optimize an algorithm/game... I hope there is a modern good book out there, that I just couldn't find...

  • Looking for a good actionscript 3 book

    I've been looking for a book on actionscript3 development, but while there's tons of books out there, nobody seems to want to recommend any specific one. One book I've been pointed towards is the cookbook by o'reilly, but it, like most books out there, seems to be based on the assumption that I'm using flexbuilder or flash. Instead, I'm "just" using flashdevelop, or the free SDK directly. I've also been told to just go with the api reference and live with it. I could do that, I suppose, but I'd rather have a book that gives me the big picture. Kind of like with cocoa, there's the hillegrass' book, or the red book of OpenGL. So, what would be the actionscript3 book out there?
