• How to check DVD integrity at max read speed of DVD writer

  I need to check the integrity of burned DVDs so that I can be sure about my backed-up data. I use DL-DVDs to take the backup. Earlier I used VSO Inspector software for the same but the day I switched to DL-DVDs the VSO Inspector gives me errors upon checking. I think the errors are because the switching of layer writing involves some dummy data somewhere. Secondly, it's damned slow for checking. I believe if there is a utility that can read all files (not the disk surface) and report if some files are unreadable would do the job. But it should be quick! Nobody wants to sit for disk checking for 3-4 hours after a quick 30 min data burn! I am looking for such a utility on Windows or Linux. Even scripts (python, etc) will do. I just want to be assured that the data is safe. Can someone help me in this? Thanks.

• Which is the fastest way to move 1Petabyte from one storage to a new one?

  First of all, thanks for reading, and sorry for asking something related to my job. I understand that this is something that I should solve by myself but as you will see its something a bit difficult. A small description: Now Storage = 1PB using DDN S2A9900 storage for the OSTs, 4 OSS , 10 GigE network. (lustre 1.6) 100 compute nodes with 2x Infiniband 1 infiniband switch with 36 ports After Storage = Previous storage + another 1PB using DDN S2A 990 or LSI E5400 (still to decide) (lustre 2.0) 8 OSS , 10GigE network 100 compute nodes with 2x Infiniband Previous experience: transfered 120 TB in less than 3 days using following command: tar -C /old --record-size 2048 -b 2048 -cf - dir | tar -C /new --record-size 2048 -b 2048 -xvf - 2>&1 | tee /tmp/dir.log So , big problem here, using big mathematical equations I conclude that we are going to need 1 month to transfer the data from one side to the new one. During this time the researchers will need to step back, and I'm personally not happy with this. I'm telling you that we have infiniband connections because I think that may be there is a chance to use it to transfer the data using 18 compute nodes (18 * 2 IB = 36 ports) to transfer the data from one storage to the other. I'm trying to figure out if the IB switch will handle all the traffic but in case it just burn up will go faster than using 10GigE. Also, having lustre 1.6 and 2.0 agents on same server works quite well, with this there is no need to go by 1.8 to upgrade the metadata servers with two steps. Any ideas? Many thanks Note 1: Zoredache, we can divide it in two blocks (A)600Tb and (B)400Tb. The idea is to move (A) to new storage which is lustre2.0 formated, then format where (A) was with lustre2.0 and move (B) to this lustre2.0 block and extend with the space where (B) was. This way we will end with (A) and (B) on separate filesystems, with 1PB each.

• What is the sysadmin's dream network printer? 6-8k pg/mo. Xerox, OkiData, Lexmark and HP are all fail

  How do I find out what printer brand and/or type doesn't suck? This information is hard to find and manufacturer's websites won't reveal any issues with certain printers. After 10 years of dealing with network shared printers, I can't say that I have been impressed with any of the printer brands I've seen. Brother's little laser MFPs have been close to ideal for low volume, but that is it, period. OkiData, Lexmark, HP, Xerox solid ink printers, they all sucked in one way or another. Currently I'm looking to replace a Xerox ColorQube 8570 because it fails to print on a regular basis. Sometimes it doesn't even boot VxWorks fully - it just hangs at 2% or whatever. I've used Xerox 8860MFPs and they sucked just as bad. I won't talk about ink jets here, that's most likely not what I'm looking for. We currently spend about $4k on paper and ink per year for this printer at up to 6-8k pages per month, letter, mostly black and white, low color usage. I want the printer to feed paper correctly, not crash and burn when a PDF isn't according to its taste (my favorite Xerox problem here) and with decent drivers for Windows and OS X. Print quality is not of the utmost importance but paper does get sent to customers.

• Can I make my PC backup and then sleep on demand with WHS?

  I really hate the way that WHS backs up at a particular time in the morning. First of all I don't EVER want my computer turning on when I am not there. EVER. I have a Core-i7 laptop which literally could burn the house down quite easily if it were to turn on in a bag. I also don't ever want my PC to sleep unless I tell it to. I don't have hibernation or sleep enabled and this is the only way that WHS will sleep after a backup is complete. I know that Windows 7 has the ability to disable waking up when on battery power but it doesn't seem to work on my laptop. These are the possibilities (with wake timers left as default): 'Wake this computer for backup' ON - it turns on in my bag if i forget to turn it off - and stays on when the backup is complete. 'Wake this computer for backup' OFF - it backs up in the morning, but I need to leave the machine on all night. I say 'Backup Now' and then it backs up immediately. I can turn it off when its done if I'm still awake, but then that backup appears as 'locked' in the console and not 'automatically managed'. What I'd really like to do is : Click 'Backup and Sleep' and then go to bed. It will backup immediately and then sleep the PC. This backup must be 'automatically managed' and not appear as a 'locked backup' in my console Show me a confirmation that everything was backed up successfully (or not) when I turn it on. Is there any way to achieve this?

• What laptop would be recommended for video-editing or transcoding to blu-ray?

  I'm looking for a machine (has to be a laptop) reasonably fast enough to handle editing/transcoding/rendering to Blu-ray disc of full true HD 1080p (1920x1080) video from a Samsung R10 camcorder - MPEG4 25fps (not the Sony-Panasonic AVCHD format): To be able to browse through the footage (say, quarter screen is fine for monitoring) and do simple edits - cut out bad bits, add titles, fades, nothing too fancy To be able to burn the footage in 1920x1080p 24p (twenty-four) fps to blu-ray, probably don't mind if I have to leave it for a few hours, or even overnight, as long as its not still running in the morning or takes days. I ALREADY have an external USB 2.0 LG BE06LU10 blu-ray burner. Does quad core make much difference? Or would Dual-core suffice for the above? NVidia because of CUDA for increased speed. What software today can take advantage of this? Which graphics card do I need? So far I've found Dell/Alienware to be well-specified, having a 5yr old Dell laptop that still runs well, albeit slow by today's standards, gives me a good impression. My concerns are too much fan-noise and budget and some Dell Precision Laptops exceed 1500 pounds. Thoughts?

• DVD Share on Vista Home Premium Failing

  UPDATE: - I can't find any Local Policy Editor for Vista Home Premium, as suggested. - I did learn about registry keys: allocatecdroms, allocatefloppies, allocatedasd and tried adding these keys (individually and collectively) and setting them to both 0 or 1. There was no positive affect on read access to the DVD root folder - always Access Denied. ORIGINAL POST: Failing read access to the root folder of a DVD drive in Vista Home Premium laptop using the Guest account - Access Denied. The client is an XP Home PC that can see, but not access, the data in the share. I'm only trying to read the data DVD - not trying to write/burn anything. On the Vista laptop, I have: All Firewalls and Antivirus disabled.UAC disabled. Password checking disabled. "Advanced Shared" the DVD drive, with "Everyone" having full-access permissions to the share. Tried adding Guest and Anonymous users having full-access permissions to the share. RestrictAnonymous=0 set in the registry. Both PC's are in the same workgroup (MSHOME) The XP Home client sees the shared DVD in \Vista_Hostname\ but when I double click the drive icon on the client, I get a popup that access is denied, check with the administrator, etc. I can share other folders on the Vista PC and see and READ these from the XP Home client. If I enable password checking on the Vista side, I get a user/password popup, and I can authenticate (using my known Vista account, that happens to have Admin rights) and then I can get to see and read the DVD data. I need to open this up so that the (default) Guest user can see and access the DVD data files.

• How to embed/hardcode SRT subtitles into mp4 videos with VLC?

  I'm looking for a way to "burn in" or render/rembed/hardcode subtitles (from an SRT file) into an MP4 video with VLC. But no matter what options I use, it never works properly. I get a file that plays video way too fast (audio is normal), or one that plays normally, but actually does not have embedded subtitles. Also, with some options (like the one below) it does not play in QuickTime, only in VLC. So the main question is: how can I make this work in VLC? Secondary questions are: How do I decide which options I should set? Which settings are best if I want to leave the file bitrate etc. the same as much as possible, only embed subtitles? It seems I cannot leave the field empty or Video/Audio unchecked, so I guess I would first need to figure out the original audio and video bitrate. What do the "Scale" and "Channels" options mean? ... none of which are answered within the VLC documentation. • Advice on Computer Specs for overall development/general use machine

  At the moment I am restricted to a laptop with 512MB of RAM, a 120GB HDD and a 1.5GHz Intel processor for all my development and general browsing needs, and as you can probably tell using it for anything modern is a painful experience. As a result I've decided to buy myself a new desktop computer, one that will stand the test of time and one that can be upgraded easily. Rather than build the machine myself I've decided to go through Dell as I've had good experiences with them when purchasing computers for my family.   I have thousands Video flv/avi files, which are all songs only. Some of them are high in volume and some are low. Every time the song ends I have to up or down the volume at once..to escape my ears ruined by headphones... and by woofers, save my life from my neighbor sleeping after hard-earning all the day long. :-( Any idea to make all files sound equal? Does such kind of application/software exist? Any converter that may convert all audio files into same volume? I know iTunes has sound-check option but can it convert? If I want to write CDs, does any burner have the feature like this, to burn in equal sound? If yes, suggest something for me... For, I am really really worried... It would be a great help..... • Recover badly recorded DVDs

  A few years ago (2003-2005) I bought a Sony USB external DVD recorder for my Dell laptop and I used it to burn a lot of discs. Much later, when I tried to use one of these discs, I realised that I could not read it. The disc behaved as if it was scratched or dirty. I tried on a couple of different DVD drives but got the same effect. Sadly, all the discs that I burnt with that recorder suffer from the same problem. Edit. When I read one of these discs with ImgBurn, I get lots of unrecovered read errors in multiple sectors, even at 1x speed. The sectors that cause read errors seem to be quite random; it's not always the same one. I have no idea what could be wrong with the discs. I doubt that they are scratched or dirty; it would be too much of a coincidence that all the discs that I burnt with that recorder got damaged at the same time. Also, they don't show any physical defects. Is there any way to diagnose what the problem is and, hopefully, recover the contents of the discs? Many thanks.

• Switched from DVI to HDMI, possible audio artifacts?

  I'm using an ASUS VH236H monitor and an EVGA GeForce 570 GTX both of which are brand new. My monitor has an audio out port for speakers/headphones so I plugged in my headphones and made a random selection from my library when I noticed two things: There are static-like artifacts during "louder" parts of songs. There's what seems to be a volume cap in place. When I crank the volume past 100% in VLC the decibel level does not truly increase but the amount of static does. The cable is not new; I yanked it off of my PS3 when my DVI cable broke. It has been used a good amount on my HDTV and PS3 so I doubt it's a matter of burn-in. I like the way the setup works with an HDMI cable as opposed to DVI because my headphones barely reach my rig whereas I have plenty of slack when they're plugged into my monitor. Thanks in advance for any support. Note: I'm using a high quality HDMI cable from monoprice, AKG K702 headphones, and VLC media player.

• Troubleshooting an overheating CPU

  I & my father just recently put together a new PC. Specs below. From the very beginning, on boot it will often complain that the CPU is too hot. If I sit in BIOS and watch the CPU, it'll drop back down from red to blue (<72C), at which point I've tended to just boot into Windows...and haven't had any problems. In fact, I've played a couple hours straight of Skyrim at max settings, and not had any visible issues. That said, I've occasionally walked away & come back to find that it's crashed. Yesterday, it crashed (while idle) twice in 12 hours, which shifted the balance from busy-with-life to nervous-I'm-about-to-melt-something. I just installed Core Temp which is showing my 4 cores fluxuating between 70-98C. I'm guessing at this point that the CPU fan may be incorrectly installed or defective. My first thought is to either (a) add water cooling (which the case supports) and / or (b) replace the CPU fan with an after-market one. That said, I'm very open to suggestions. A note, while I certainly don't want to burn money here, I have a baby coming any day now and am still unpacking from a recent move so if I have a choice between an option that costs money and another that takes a while...I'll happily spend a bit extra. Side question: Should I be nervous to even have this on at this point? Let me know if there's something useful I could add to my report. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to your suggestions! Thanks. • CD Drive not discovered

  I have a self built computer. it uses a P6T Deluxe motherboard, which has both SATA and IDE ports. This was built several years ago, and had an IDE CD/DVD drive. This drive started going bad (would not burn CDs correctly), so I decided to replace it. I had difficultly finding an IDE DVD drive, so I bought a SATA DVD drive. I opened the comnputer, took out the old DVD drive. I left the IDE cable in place, connected to the motherboard, but it is not connected to any drives. I hooked up the new DVD drive, both power and with a SATA data cable (SATA port 3 if I recall). (Sony Optiarc 24x , Newegg URL: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118067 ) When I power on my computer, the drive does NOT show up in Explorer. I can hit the DVD eject button, and the drive will open up, so I know it at least is getting power. I thought, maybe something in the BIOS. When I go to BIOS, boot devices, it shows (1) floppy, (2) my hard drive (3) ATAPI CD Drive. The only other possible BIOS option I could find was uder 'Storage Configuration'. Configure Storage as: My setting is RAID, since I am using two drives in a RAID configuration. Other options were IDE and ACHI. Other than trying to find an IDE DVD drive, is there anything else I can try? The drive does not show up at all in Windows Explorer. I did put in a CD thinking that might help, but nothing happened. • Cannot install windows. Compaq Presario CQ62

  I bought a used Compaq Presario CQ62 for cheap, and went to install windows on it. I formatted the partition and went to install when I got this error.... Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070017 I have used this disk before with no problems, but internet searching suggested I burn one at 2x speed because that helps for some reason... I'm burning one now, but my question is, why would I get this error, OTHER than the disc being bad? I'm pretty certain this one isn't as I have used it before... (ok so the slowly burned cd (using imgburn) didn't work either so it's DEFINITELY not the disc) Thanks in advanced for any answers Also I took one stick of ram out because internet searching also suggested that, but it didn't make a difference. Also I ran memory and hard drive checks and they passed fine. Also I reset the motherboard options to default What could it be!? Help I'm completely stumped...

• How to copy VirtualBox VDI contents to a partition and dual boot the OS from it?

  I'm a Linux user but I keep a compressed Windows XP ISO with me on a pen drive for the case I absolutely need Windows to do something. This works in VirtualBox most of the time. But now I want to play some games, so I would like to run the Windows image natively. My computer don't have CD drive so cannot just burn the ISO and make an install normally. What I trying to do is moving the installed Windows image to a physical NTFS partition on my HDD and set up GRUB to let me dual boot it. I found many tutorials that deal with making VDI to physical drive. But they assume I want to overwrite my entire drive. Moving the raw disk image with dd to the partition resulted in a corrupt partition. I also tried the VMDK trick to use that empty partition and install the Windows on it. Although the text mode phase of the installation finishes without problems, the VM won't work, either crashes and keeps rebooting or just immediately or freezes (depending on how I created the VMDK, with -rawdisk /dev/sda3 or -rawdisk /dev/sda -partition 3).

• How to decouple development server from Internet?

  I am working in a small set-up where there are 4 developers (might grow to 6 or 8 in cuople of years). I want to set-up an environment in which developers get an internet access but can not share any data from the company on internet. I have thought of the following plan: Set-up a centralized git server (Debian). The server will have an internet access. A developer will only have git account on that server, and won't have any other account on it. Do not give internet access to developer's individual machine (Windows XP/Windows 7). Run a virtual machine (any multi-user OS) on the centralized server (the same one on which git is hosted). Developer will have an account on this virtual machine. He/she can access internet via this virtual machine. Any data-movement between this virtual machine and underlying server, as well as any of the developer's machine, is prohibited. All developers require USB port on their local machine, so that they can burn their code into a microcontroller. This port will be made available only to associated software that dumps the code in a microcontroller (MPLAB in current case). All other softwares will be prohibited from accessing the port. As more developers get added, providing internet support for them will become difficult with this plan as it will slow down the virtual machine running on the server. Can anyone suggest an alternative ? Are there any obvious flaws in the above plan ? Some key details of the server are as below: 1) OS:Debian 2) RAM: 8GB 3) CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1220v2 4C/4T

• Unit Testing in Entity Framework 4 - using CreateSourceQuery

  There are many great tutorials on abstracting your EF4 context so that it can be tested against (without involving a DB). Here's the question. When using linq-to-objects against IObjectSet (ie, unit testing), CreateSourceQuery returns null, which will probably cause your entire query to crash and burn. ie O = db.Orders.First(); O.OrderItems.CreateSourceQuery().ToList(); Is there a way to get CreateSourceQuery to just return the underlying collection, rather than null when working with collections? Unfortunately EntityCollection is sealed, and so cannot be mocked. This isn't really the end or the world if EF4 won't let you abstract things to this level, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I was missing.

• Ideas for networking project

  Hi all, I'm a graduating senior in computer science taking a computer networks class and I'm trying to figure out my final project. I normally am not at a loss for ideas but be it senioritis or straight burn out, I've got nothing. I've done some fun stuff in the past, but I just can't seem to come up with a good idea. Given the mass of brilliance on this site, I figured it would be a good place to request some suggestions. To give you an idea of scope, it's due in about a month and I would consider myself proficient with mobile architectures like Android (although I have no iPhone experience) along with Java, C++, etc. If you can suggest an idea, I'd be happy to make it work in whatever language I know. Like I said, I'm a senior and will be graduating so I'd rather not take on something that would kill me... Also, I'd be happy to make it open source if it's an idea you'd always wanted to work on but didn't have the time to start. Thanks in advance for the help! • Does anyone else get worn out using Scrum, finishing sprint after sprint?

  I'm with a pretty small startup and we started using a form of a Scrum/Agile development cycle. In many ways I enjoy Scrum. We have relatively short sprints (2 weeks) and I like the Burndown Chart to track the teams progress. I also like the Feature Board so I always know what I should be doing next. It feels good taking down a feature's card from the board, completing it and then putting it in the burn down pile. However, we are now entering in our 18th Sprint release cycle and I'm starting to feel a little burnt out. It isn't that I don't like job or my co-workers, it is just that these sprints are... well, sprints. From start to finish I literally feel like I'm racing against the clock to maintain our development velocity. When we are done with the sprint we spend one day planning the next sprints feature set and estimates and then off we go again. For people who work in a mature Agile/Scrum development process, is this normal? Or are we missing something? Is there normally time in a Scrum enviornment that is unassigned/untracked to get done some minor things and to clear your head?

• How to thoroughly purge and reinstall postgresql on ubuntu?

  Somehow I've managed to completely bugger the install of postgresql on Ubuntu karmic. I want to start over from scratch, but when I "purge" the package with apt-get it still leaves traces behind such that the reinstall configuration doesn't run properly. After I've done: apt-get purge postgresql apt-get install postgresql It said Setting up postgresql-8.4 (8.4.3-0ubuntu9.10.1) ... Configuring already existing cluster (configuration: /etc/postgresql/8.4/main, data: /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main, owner: 108:112) Error: move_conffile: required configuration file /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main/postgresql.conf does not exist Error: could not create default cluster. Please create it manually with pg_createcluster 8.4 main --start or a similar command (see 'man pg_createcluster'). update-alternatives: using /usr/share/postgresql/8.4/man/man1/postmaster.1.gz to provide /usr/share/man/man1/postmaster.1.gz (postmaster.1.gz) in auto mode. Setting up postgresql (8.4.3-0ubuntu9.10.1) ... I have a "/etc/postgresql" with nothing in it and "/etc/postgresql-common/" has a 'pg_upgradecluser.d' directory and root.crt and user_clusters files. The /etc/passwd has a postgres user; the purge script doesn't appear to touch it. There's been a bunch of symptoms which I work through only to expose the next. Right this second, when I run that command "pg_createcluster..." it complains that '/var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main/postgresql.conf does not exist', so I'll go find one of those but I'm sure that won't be the end of it. Is there not some easy one-liner (or two) which will burn it completely and let me start over?

• How to restrain one's self from the overwhelming urge to rewrite everything?

  Setup Have you ever had the experience of going into a piece of code to make a seemingly simple change and then realizing that you've just stepped into a wasteland that deserves some serious attention? This usually gets followed up with an official FREAK OUT moment, where the overwhelming feeling of rewriting everything in sight starts to creep up. It's important to note that this bad code does not necessarily come from others as it may indeed be something we've written or contributed to in the past. Problem It's obvious that there is some serious code rot, horrible architecture, etc. that needs to be dealt with. The real problem, as it relates to this question, is that it's not the right time to rewrite the code. There could be many reasons for this: Currently in the middle of a release cycle, therefore any changes should be minimal. It's 2:00 AM in the morning, and the brain is starting to shut down. It could have seemingly adverse affects on the schedule. The rabbit hole could go much deeper than our eyes are able to see at this time. etc... Question So how should we balance the duty of continuously improving the code, while also being a responsible developer? How do we refrain from contributing to the broken window theory, while also being aware of actions and the potential recklessness they may cause? Update Great answers! For the most part, there seems to be two schools of thought: Don't resist the urge as it's a good one to have. Don't give in to the temptation as it will burn you to the ground. It would be interesting to know if more people feel any balance exists.

• How to debug problems in Linux kernel module `init()`?

  I am using remote (k)gdb to debug a problem in a module that causes a panic when loaded e.g. when init() is called. The stack trace just shows that do_one_initcall(mod->init) causes the crash. In order to get the symbol file loaded in the gdb, I need to get the address of the module text section, and to get that I need to get the module loaded. Because the insmod in busybox (1.16.1) doesn't support -m so I'm stuck to grep modulename /proc/modules + adding the offset from nm to figure out the address. So I'm facing a sort a of a chicken and an egg problem here - to be able to debug the module loading, I need to get the module loaded - but in order to get the module loaded, I need to debug the problem... So I am currently thinking about two options - is there a way to get the address information either: by printk() in the module init code by printk() somewhere in the kernel code all this prior to calling the mod->init() - so I could place a breakpoint there, load the symbol file, hit c and see it crash and burn...

• Shrinking the transaction log of a mirrored SQL Server 2005 database

  I've been looking all over the internet and I can't find an acceptable solution to my problem, I'm wondering if there even is a solution without a compromise... I'm not a DBA, but I'm a one man team working on a huge web site with no extra funding for extra bodies, so I'm doing the best I can. Our backup plan sucks, and I'm having a really hard time improving it. Currently, there are two servers running SQL Server 2005. I have a mirrored database (no witness) that seems to be working well. I do a full backup at noon and at midnight. These get backed up to tape by our service provider nightly, and I burn the backup files to dvd weekly to keep old records on hand. Eventually I'd like to switch to log shipping, since mirroring seems kinda pointless without a witness server. The issue is that the transaction log is growing non-stop. From the research I've done, it seems that I can't truncate a log file of a mirrored database. So how do I stop the file from growing!? Based on this web page, I tried this: USE dbname GO CHECKPOINT GO BACKUP LOG dbname TO DISK='NULL' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT, NAME = N'dbnameLog Backup', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD GO DBCC SHRINKFILE('dbname_Log', 2048) GO But that didn't work. Everything else I've found says I need to disable the mirror before running the backup log command in order for it to work. My Question (TL;DR) How can I shrink my transaction log file without disabling the mirror?
