How make the daily backups without wasting a lot of space. PS: i used tar to compress 1 file and the size went down to 5GB. I hoped that when i compress two files the ratio would be better, but no. 2 dumps compressed are 10Gb

I'd like to ask the following questions : How do you centralize, display and archive system logs? How would you like to do it now if you had to? Most linux distro use rsyslog nowadays, which can provide reliable log transport. But some older unices, network devices and maybe windows box still use old udp rfc-style transport. How did you manage to get reliable transport? Storing logs for a few months can represent a huge amount of disk space. How do you store them? rdbms? Compressed and encrypted text files?

  First, sorry my noobs questions, but I'm mainly Windows Developer and not Web Developer :) I'm developing a single page application with a lot of css & javascript. For now the page is 1.3Mo composed by 5 section. Here are the rounded stats : Document : 10kb Style : 60kb Images : 450 kb (already compressed, include a big gallery thumbnails) Javascript : 700kb - 600kb of "framework" (jquery, jquery-ui, boostrap, modernizer, waypoint, ...) and 100kb of custom js. Fonts : 125kb And the site is not finished yet. (Will include gmap api, and some others...) My questions are : Do you have any statistics about the average weight of an SPA ? As this is the whole website, do you think it's acceptable ? Is lazy load (for images) a solution ? What will be impact for SEO ? Is the "200kb rule" of google still relevant ? Do you know great tools to detect which javascript code is not used during the the exection of a page and then the availability to optimize these 700kb of framework js stuffs ?   Microsoft’s pricing for SQL Server in the cloud, SQLAzure has been announced: $9.99   per month for 0 – 1GB $99.99 per month up to 10GB. There’s currently a 10GB maximum size cap for SQLAzure. For larger data storage needs, you’ll need to break the databases into smaller sizes. Scaling SQL Azure Applications If you think you’re going to need 100GB in the near term, it probably makes sense to break your application up into multiple separate databases from the get-go (10 x $9.99 = $99.99 anyway) and just make really sure none of the individual databases exceed 10GB. Beep Beep, Back That Database Up The bandwidth costs for SQL Azure are $.15 per GB of outbound bandwidth.  Assuming that you don’t compress the data before you pull it out of the cloud, that means daily backups of a 1GB database will add another $4.50 per month, and a 10GB database will add another $45/month.  Daily backups will cost about half of what your monthly service charges cost. It’s not completely clear from the press release, but if Microsoft follows Amazon’s pricing model, bandwidth between the Microsoft cloud services will not incur a cost.  That would mean it might make sense to spin up an Windows Azure computing application for $.12 per hour, use that application to compress your SQL Azure database, and then send the compressed data off to Azure storage for backup.  That would eliminate the data in/out costs, and minimize the Azure storage costs ($.15/GB).  Database administrators would back up their SQL Azure data to Azure Storage, keep a history of backups there, and restore them to SQL Azure faster when needed. Of course, there’s no native backup support in SQL Azure, and it’s not clear whether Windows Azure will include tools like SQL Server Integration Services. • zram trimming by writing zero pages

  I'm using ZRAM as a backing block device for /tmp filesystem in the following manner: echo 8000000000 > /sys/block/zram0/disksize mkfs.ext4 -O dir_nlink,extent,extra_isize,flex_bg,^has_journal,uninit_bg -m0 \ -b 4096 -L "zram0" /dev/zram0 mount -o barrier=0,commit=240,noatime,nodev,nosuid /dev/zram0 /tmp chmod aogu+rwx /tmp It works out reasonably well for me - however, there is an issue here - when files are removed, they are not zero'ed, so the ZRAM does not remote the compressed pages. Obviously running dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/ZERO bs=1M count={free-space-some-rest}; rm /tmp/ZERO clears it up in the ZRAM - it gets notified of zero-pages and shrinks the store. How can I get ext4 to zero used pages on delete? Also, any other suggestions on how to optimize it?

• How to stop a infinite running process(ztail) started by a ssh session after that session is closed

  I have a peculiar problem. My server supports multiple ssh session simultaneously, so that multiple admins can manage it simultaneously. We have a command which calls ztail to show the compressed log files and when the current ssh session is closed (without pressing ctrlc, to stop the tail command), the command should ideally stop working. But what I observed when I start a new ssh session is that the process ztail is still running in the background and consuming CPU, even though the previous session was closed. How can I determine when the session is closed, so that I can use that variable/flag to close/stop any commands initiated by that previously closed session?

  I need ffmpeg to open webcam (logitech c910) in MJPEG mode, because the webcam can give ~24 using MJPEG "protocol" and only ~10 fps using the YUYV.   I've heard that NTFS compression can reduce performance due to extra CPU usage, but I've read reports that it may actually increase performance because of reduced disk reads. How exactly does NTFS compression affect system performance? Notes: I'm running a laptop with a 5400 RPM hard drive, and many of the things I do on it are I/O bound. The processor is a AMD Phenom II with four cores running at 2.0 GHz. The system is defragmented regularly using UltraDefrag. The workload is mixed read-write, with reads occurring somewhat more often than writes. The files to be compressed include personal documents and selected programs, including several (less demanding) games and Visual Studio (which tends to be I/O bound more often than not).

  I'm a newbie in desktop recording and screencasting. I didn't find a suitable free application to do all the things I want it to do, but I did enjoy using jing. I would expect such an application to have these features: choose the whole desktop, a region, a window to record zoom in an area, and camera move save the recorded movie to a compressed format have basic editing tools have the mouse highlighting feature (either a sonar blip or something similar) highlight window/field on the screen, any trick will do display pressed keys/key combinations (like iphone does) So the question is: Which free desktop recording/screencasting software would you recommend on windows? It doesn't have to have all those features, just tell me your favorable experiences. Please suggest tools that would do mouse/keys/areas highlight tricks. • Looping through a batch file only if the response is "everything is okay"

  I have a batch file that loops through the contents of a directory and compresses the files in the directory as follows; for %%a in (c:\data\*.*) do if "%%~xa" == "" "C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7za.exe" a -tzip -mx9 "%%a.zip" "%%a" Seeing that I am using 7zip to compress the file, it returns the message "everything is okay" if it has successfully compressed the file and it then moves onto the next file in any. What I would like to do is the following; Only move to the next file if the response is "everything is okay" If the response is anything but "everything is okay", the error is logged Since an error has occurred, it attempts to compress the file again Once when it has succeeded i.e. "everything is okay" it goes to the next file Steps 3 & 4 only occur a maximum of 3 times before it gives up and moves onto the next file. How can I achieve this?

  I'm using Linux Mint 13 MATE (32 bit). With Caja file manager (based on Nautilus 2.x) I can create, modify and remove folders and files on NTFS partitions whitout problems. But, for example, when I have a compressed file (.zip, .7z, ...) in a NTFS partition I can't extract it (with File-Roller, Peazip, ...). But I can extract the same file in a ext4 partition perfectly. What might the problem be? Are there (maybe) file permissions for each application?

• Java issues on OpenVZ Ubuntu 11.04 (.jar/.sh files)

  I've had a whole line of messes with java and .jar files. I've tried both OpenJDK (from software installer) and about three repositories for Sun. /Desktop# java -jar -Xmx1024m ss.jar Exception in thread "main" java.awt.HeadlessException at java.awt.GraphicsEnvironment.checkHeadless(GraphicsEnvironment.java:173) at java.awt.Window.<init>(Window.java:476) at java.awt.Frame.<init>(Frame.java:419) at java.awt.Frame.<init>(Frame.java:384) at javax.swing.JFrame.<init>(JFrame.java:174) at org.powerbot.bd.<init>(Unknown Source) at org.powerbot.Boot.main(Unknown Source) Two separate errors: ~/Desktop# ./ss.sh [SEVERE] org.server.Boot: Default heap size of 490m too small, restarting with 768m and about 30 different crashes were it just "aborts" with a huge file dump. Each time I've tried something a little different, whether it be updating Java or just changing -Xmx1024 to -Xmx1024m to get rid of the heap.   In my work as a developer I sometimes find myself sending details emails with screenshots to illustrate some point or problem. The content of these screenshots is often text. So knowing that PNG is much better at handle compression of images with text, I save my screenshots as PNG and insert them into my email. However whenever I check my sent mail, the images are clearly being sent as a JPG because they look horribly compressed. I'm using Outlook 2003 as my email program. Is there some setting I can change to make Outlook send inline images as PNGs?

• SQL SERVER – Finding Size of a Columnstore Index Using DMVs

  Columnstore Index is one of my favorite enhancement in SQL Server 2012. A columnstore index stores each column in a separate set of disk pages, rather than storing multiple rows per page as data traditionally has been stored. In case of the row store indexes multiple pages will contain multiple rows of the columns spanning across multiple pages. Whereas in case of column store indexes multiple pages will contain (multiple) single columns.  Columnstore Indexes are compressed by default and occupies much lesser space than regular row store index by default. One of the very common question I often see is need of the list of columnstore index along with their size and corresponding table name. I quickly re-wrote a script using DMVs sys.indexes and sys.dm_db_partition_stats. This script gives the size of the columnstore index on disk only. I am sure there will be advanced script to retrieve details related to components associated with the columnstore index.   What are the performance affects of compressing Program Files on Windows NTFS? On a fast, multicore machine, the overhead of decompression is minimal. Machines are generally disk bound, and if you can reduce the disk load by compression, you often speed things up. (Microsoft says that the built in compression of Windows Search indexes actually improves speed for this reason.) On the other hand, Windows' virtual memory is complicated. Perhaps if files are compressed, they can't be paged out simply. And there may be other issues. • How can OpenGL graphics be displayed remotely using VNC?

  I am attempting to run a program that uses OpenGL to render a model in a viewport through VNC unsuccessfully. The error message I receive is - Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":1.0". It was my understanding that VNC can be configured to render all graphics remotely and send a compressed screen grab from the display buffer to the local client. This would seem to negate the need for GLX extensions on the local client. Can VNC be configured this way and could you briefly describe how?
