  • Building a DataTable in C# with one column at a time

    I am trying to build a Retirement Calculator as a chance to make something useful and learn C# better. Currently, I am trying to build a DataTable with a dynamic amount of rows/columns. For context, I ask the user for some inputs regarding salary, % of salary being invested, and expected ROI. I have some other stuff too, but it isn't really part of the issue I am having. Because the number of columns I need for the DataTable is unknown until the formula is run (while+for loop completes), I am having trouble doing things as DataColumns. Hopefully the code below will help. I am really trying to build the table one column at a time. I realize I could reverse it to build it one row at a time because the Years before retirement (yearsRetire) is known, but I would prefer not to and I want to learn more. Sorry for the indentation and commenting. I tried to leave some of my commented coding attempts in there.     Im using c# .net windows forms application. i have a data grid view. It is connected to a database.It displays the contents of a selected table. Now if there are 4 rows in that table, it will display 4 rows. After this i am able to enter the 5th row in the datagrid view. It should be avoided. Now i have to disable creation of a new row. How can I do it?

    I'm sure you know the problem, as soon as a BindingSource is connected to a DataGridView the DataGridView generates columns for each Property found in the Type of the BindingSource's DataSource and adds that crap to the Form.Designer.cs file. We only use run time generated columns, the clutter in the designer file is just waste of code, so how can we stop this "feature" of the DataGridView in WinForms?

DataGridViewTextBoxColumn txtBoxColumn = new DataGridViewTextBoxColumn(); txtBoxColumn.Name = columnName; txtBoxColumn.HeaderText = columnName; g_dataGridView.Columns.Add(txtBoxColumn); User will create some custom type column therefore i am adding column directly to grid. I am also able to set its default value before adding for this i am using DataGrid_CellFormatting(object sender, DataGridViewCellFormattingEventArgs e) { if (colIndexWithDefaultValue.Count > 0) { if (colIndexWithDefaultValue.Contains(e.ColumnIndex)) { g_dataGridView.Rows[e.RowIndex].Cells[e.ColumnIndex].Value = colIndexWithDefaultValue[e.ColumnIndex]; } } } where colIndexWithDefaultValue is list of columns with its default value. It is able to show newly created column with default value. But values are getting set for currently visible rows. To set value for all rows i have to do scrolling. So, how do i overcome this problem...

    Hello, I am sure this has to a comon thing I just can't find it. I am making a combobox from my data source. Basically, This is a projects form and the user needs to select the the primary contact which is contrained by the customer id (GETbyCustomerID) set in another field. I have it working... mostly except the combobox only displays the contact ID which is completely useless to the user. I need to know how to display the First and Last name (both are seperate columns in the table). Any help? I am just using the designer.

My use case is below: I have empty data grid in my application. user will drag and drop one column from available column list box into data grid. The data grid will start displaying data for that column. Now, I will drag another column into data grid and now grid should get populated data of two columns. This will repeat till user feels that he has dropped all necessary columns. What is best way to do this? Is there any performance hits with large number of rows typically 1 million? Please help.     I have googled everywhere and I am finally giving up and asking here. I am working in Visual Studio 2010 with C#. I have set up a form with a datagridview connected to a MSSQL database and I need to save changes made in the datagridview back to the physical database. I am having some success but I think that I am going about some of it completely wrong because I can not get it to save consistently. What I really want is for the updates to work just like they do when working with Access. When I edit a row in the datagridview and then leave that row, either by selecting another row or by selecting some other control on the form or even by changing to another form or quitting the application the row should be automatically pdated to the physical database. The first part of this question I think is, what is the proper event to use to trigger the save and then second what methods should be used to actually write the data to the database?

    I have a datagridview in which one column contains a custom class, which I have set using: dgvPeriods.Columns[1].ValueType = typeof(ExDateTime); It is rigged up to display correctly by handling the CellFormatting event, but I'm unsure what event to handle for cell editing. In the absence of doing anything I get a FormatException as the datagridview tries to convert String to ExDateTime as I try to move focus out of the edited cell. I tried adding type conversion to my ExDateTime custom class: public static implicit operator ExDateTime(string b) { return new ExDateTime(b); } But this this didn't work. I also tried handling the DataError event, but this seems to fire too late. The datagridview is not databound.

  • How do you bind SQL Data to a .NET DataGridView?

    I am trying to bind a table in an SQL database to a DataGridView Control. I would like to make it so that when the user enters a new line of data in the DataGridView that a record is automatically added to the database. Is there a way to do this using LINQ to SQL? I have tried using the code below but after I add a new entry I dont think the data gets added to the DB. Please Help! BOMClassesDataContext DB = new BOMClassesDataContext(); var mfrs = from m in DB.Manufacturers select m; BindingSource bs = new BindingSource(); bs.DataSource = mfrs; dataGridView1.DataSource = bs; I tried adding DB.SubmitChanges() to the CellValueChanged eventhandler and that partially works. If I click the bottom empty row it automatically fills in the ID (identity) column of the table with a "0" instead of the next unused value. If I change that value manually to the next available then it adds the new record fine but if I leave it at 0 it does nothing. How can i fix this?
